Reverted back to Froyo and need tips/advice - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since I am very new to flashing, rooting, etc with Android phones. I was wondering if you guys could give me tips or advice on what my next move would be. So I just reverted my Desire Z to Froyo 2.2 from GB 2.3. Since I want to learn and try out different ROMS - should I:
1) Perma-root and install clockwork recovery mod? Which rooting method is best for Froyo 2.2(kinda confused)?
2) If not, which version of android is best for me to upgrade to be able to root?
3) Lastly, which ROMS are best?
Thanks in advance!

The most supported method (and what 99% of the people will point you towards) is the rooting method on the Xda Wiki. If you follow that you should be fine.
As far as ROMs, everyone has a preference. Complete the steps above and try out what you like. No one ROM (or even handful of ROMs) is the best.
EDIT: DO NOT USE VISIONARY

Good Luck!

1.)Root your Phone the "Clean Way" using Rage http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843014 Be sure to read everything carefully or you brick your phone bro
2.)The best version of Android for Rooting is Stock Android 2.2 NOT 2.2.1 or any version higher!
3.) Every ROM is great just pick the right one for you or you could try the one of the ROMs on my Signature

Thanks for the replies. I ended up using the xda Wiki guide and was able to root my DZ with Froyo 2.2. So far so good, now reading all about the different ROMS that are posted in the development section. Should be done by next week, lol.- theres so many posted. I also trying to learn more about the ins and outs of using the clockwork recovery mod.
Hopefully I don't mess up my backup CP....

Hi,
I tried a lot of roms, gingerbread (2.3) and ice cream sandwitch (4.0).
Best rom is ILWT from tsubus. Take it!

Links would help, I haven't heard of ILWT, and "best" is subjective to what you need/looking-for.
Edit: It appears to be a modded/tweaked CM7

Hmm so I encountered a problem. After I chose a ROM to, downloaded it and copied it into the SD card as "update.zip". After going into recovery mode, I get this error message:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
--Intall from sdcard...
Finding ipdate package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
So what do I do now? Can I still go back to Froyo 2.2? Thanks again

what recovery do you have now? I assume clockworkmod, I suggest using 4ext but that's mostly preference.
the rom you chose has a bad sig, probably not a good rom, or even the right one for your phone. go to the developers section and find one of the first threads thatis a compalation of most the roms for your phone. start with a 2.3.x rom
put on the root of your sd card, don't extract the .zip, don't even rename it. boot to recovery, wipe everything, choose install .zip, pick yours and flash (if gapps or other mods needed flash those next, then choose reboot

@Demkantor
Yes I am using clockworkmod, downloading Virtous ROM G-lite now and hopefully it installs without any problems.

E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Hmm still getting the same error message, tried another ROM in sd card. Getting the same error message:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

Does it really make a difference if I rename the ZIP(ROM) file or leave it as is? Since my Desire Z is on rooted stock Froyo, is there another way I can install a newer ROM so I can install one of the ROM managers apps? I believe the ROM manager apps available in the Google PLay market require newer versions of Android to work. Right?

yea I haven't named a rom update.zip since the early g1 days, when you had to so I can't say 100% if that's an issue but I kinda doubt it. so you have the clockwork recovery linked in the xda wiki right? confirm this. also boot into bootloader and write down all on your screen, may help figuring out your problems
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium

I am using recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-vision. What do you mean by "boot into bootloader'? If I do not rename the file to "update" then whenever you go to recovery, it prompts you that there is no update.zip file the mod can use.

Boot loader/boot/spl I uses these terms interchangeably, this is the screen when you power on holding power+ volume down, on this screen it will tell me what radio, boot you have, if you're son or off, etc
I think the problem is the way you are flashing your rom, haven't used clockwork in years but if I remember right I think you are choosing to flash an update.zip, that's not the way to use it
Choose something like install .zip from SD card, here you scroll to the zip you want and then choose that .zip
In other words explore your options in clockwork a bit more
If your still having problems write the information I asked and tell me where your stuck, but I think you should be good now

Finally was able to flash it to cyanogenmod 7. I basically had to redo everything again and it finally worked. Thanks again for all the help.

Root/Install Froyo on Desire

I've always wanted to try android without sense on my htc desire so froyo seems like a good version to start with. However, I have never even tried to root and install a custom rom on my desire. Can someone point me to a tutorial on doing this with the latest custom froyo rom? I am currently using a generic htc desire with 0.8 bootloader. Also, if I wanted to go back to the original unrooted 2.1 ROM so that I can receive OTA updates from HTC, is it easy?
The links at the top of the page should help u.
Also remember if your on orange and you debrand ur phone then update over the air. You'll need to purchase an unlock code. Via htccode.com

I recently did the same, rooting was not difficult at all ( but i am bit of a techy)
and flashing rooms is easy, i suggust you use the linux method, then use fake flash to flash any rom, to resort back to an official rom is easy peasy. Well worth doing this has brought my phone to life ( although it was amazing before)

You don't need to purchase anything mate, you just need to downgrade your radio.

Cheers guys. Is there a working Froyo ROM for the desire(without Sense) and can I flash it with the same method?
I'm personally using DefroST which is a Froyo port, I love it. Yes, just flash the zip file of the ROM you download through a recovery menu.

I'm assuming rooting wipes all your data off the phone? if you were to upgrade it later on to a more recent version - would that again wipe all the data?

You don't always have to wipe to update ROM bit most people do, myself included.

Same way you would upgrade, download the particular zip file to your SDCard, boot into your recovery menu and install the downloaded zip.

So it's better to root/flash roms via linux OS. I assume i can just boot from a thumbdrive for the linux OS right? Any links for that as i'm zero knowledge with linux.
I recall seeing one that need me to burn the .iso file into CD but my notebook does not come with a CDROM so it's going to be a hassle as compared to using a thumbdrive to boot.

i am about the embark on my rooting and installing custom ROMs journey. Read thru the tutorial countless number of time. But still I have a question regarding the fake flash recovery method.
In the tut, under the section Fake Flash (sorry I am not allowed to post a link as a new user), bullet point 2 says:
"Copy the update.zip to the root of your SD card (the name MUST remain as update.zip)"
I dun see any update.zip file in the download link below. Is the author referring to the recovery-clockwork-bravo.zip file? Do it rename it to update.zip and put it in my sdcard together with the custom ROM file before running the clockwork recovery?
I was contemplating using the USB recovery method but was afraid of bricking my Desire....
Sorry if the question is terribly noobish....that's always a first time, yah?

Yes, rename it to update.zip and leave it like that. When you reboot your phone into recovery, you're presented with the option to apply update.zip, but you can't choose any other .zips, so you need it to be named update.zip so it'll boot into recovery.
thanks for your prompt reply.
So i once the recovery cycle kicks in I will be able to choose the custom ROM file huh? there after, i do the wipe and let the thing install? sorry for being a paranoid....
When you apply there clockworkmod update.zip you will beer taken to a more advanced recovery- like screen from here you can wipe data andf flash roms a s you wish to
the rom you flash just have t o be a .zip you have the possibility to browse the sd card to find the zip you would like to flash
Hope that clarified some things
It answered what I once liked to know before I tried anything
aha! thanks! that's what I need to know too....this froyo wait is taking a little too long.... I figured I can just apply custom ROMs now and start enjoying froyo and when HTC finally (yah, finally) releases desire froyo with sense, I can still grab the ROM and apply.....probably with more enhancements by hackers here....
it's a win-win situation, of coz unless i somehow manage to brick my desire i n the process....
darn! I feel defeated. Rooting seems pretty easy but i failed. Using the tiny core linux method but after issuing sudo ./step1.sh i kept getting errors.
Tried it twice...and both times I got the errors messages below...

signature verification failed issue

I have checked all the forums and read all the responses i can get on. I am trying to go to Froyo and i have tried both Ava as well as other 2.2 zip files.
I have renamed them to update.zip and YES i checked and triple checked that its not update.zip.zip
I have done a factory reset as well as a wipe of cache and then ran the apply update.zip option from the bootloader
i just keep getting the following
E:signature verification failed
also i see this...
Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Even after wiping everything, i tried it several times, several froyo 2.2 files. What am i doing wrong?
Not rooting your phone completely among other things is my guess.
Also, just flash zip instead of renaming to update.

You don't flash zips in bootloader you do it in recovery

My phone was completely rooted before hand, and was using RVU ROM. Also what do you mean by flashing instead of renaming?
also i meant to say that i flashed in Recovery where i saw the Red Triangle and then got the options to wipe cache and factory reset as well as update from Sd card.
If you are fully rooted, you need to install a custom recovery like amon-ra or clockwork. You won't be able to flash a custom rom with the stock recovery. It will fail checking the sig.
If you are using unrevoked, you aren't fully rooted and you need to go do a full root, version dependent of course. You can find instructions for whichever stock rom version you are running in the dev forum.
i don't mean to sound like a jerk, but please read the forum guidelines about where to post.
you want 'Q and A'.
am the same why did you get to root it ??

Sounds like a corrupt file. Delete the files, clear download cache and try again. Make sure you're on WiFi with a solid signal as any data hiccups can corrupt files.

Edit: so I manually flashed the newer superuser zip for 2.2 and it updated that way. I re-downloaded virtous 1.0.1 full rom, thing is like 264mbs I think. Anyway I was on wifi new router full signal and it finished. Same error came up after booting to recovery and trying to flash the zip. Error was file directory and next line was (bad) I have wiped and all. No luck. Please help I'm dying to flash new roms!!

[Q] Problem getting into recovery.

I have recently rooted my phone and there was a couple things missing, and i wanted to just flash a new rom onto it, but no matter how i try it, i cannot load up the clockwork mod recovery. If i click 'recovery' in the hboot menu, it just pops up the 'htc evo 4g' screen for less than a second, then goes right back to the hboot screen. Any suggestions?
At the top of the HBOOT screen, does it show S-ON or S-OFF? If the latter, you need to re-root. If the former, I suggest downloading amon_RA Recovery.
Take the PC36IMG.zip file and place it on the root of your SD card (not in any folder), enter the bootloader and after a short pause, the bootloader *should* autodetect the file and prompt you to install. Installation takes less than 10 seconds. Afterwards, amon_RA will be your recovery.

thanks for the help, do you consider it a bad idea and start all over and unroot it then re do it? i only suggest it because i may have possibly missed a step rooting it, cause when i started up my phone i didnt have the market, gmail, i couldnt setup a google profile on my phone to retrieve contacts, none of that.

If you've flashed an AOSP rom then chances are you didn't flash the associated GAPPS (Google Apps) zip which would install the Google related stuff like the Android Market app, the Gmail app and others. If it is a Sense-based rom, I would re-wipe/factory reset and then reflash the rom. Rooting, in and of itself, has nothing to do with the Android Market app not being installed.

Sounds like a bad or corrupt file that you're trying to flash. Either that or it's not flashable. Can you open the file up with your computer, or do you get an error? If you can open the file, is there a folder in there called META-INF.? if not, the zip is not flashable, and you probably downloaded a system dump by accident. Good luck.

Let's start from the beginning. Which rom are you trying to flash? I take it that you already have CyanogenMod installed but not the gapps zip. If the gapps zip is bad, make sure you are downloading the one specific to the version of CM that you've flashed. Downgrading the PRI to 1.77_003 is irrelevant in this matter. If, however, you're trying to flash a different rom that states that you need PRI 1.77_003 then okay. If you are trying to flash a different rom and it is AOSP, get the rom and associated gapps zip and place it on the SD card. Go into recovery and wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card. After that, flash the rom then flash the gapps zip.

[Q] Update firmware on my rooted phone

Hello all this is my first post and im new to android so please excuse me as im a total noob!
I have a desire hd which is rooted, which was done by the guy i bought the phone off. It is running on Android 2.2.1, id like to update it to the newest firmware, but im not sure how I go about it. Ive been told I can't update from my phone because it's rooted?
Thanx in advance
IThere's loads of guides...if your rooted already...download rom manager, then open it..flash clockwordmod recovery at the top of the app choose your model.then go to android development section to look through the roms you want, download there zip file..for instance if its android revolution there's a download link for the Rom. When its download press on the item...then it'll ask how you want to open it,it'll take you to Rom manager..if you have data already on there just leave the wipe davlik and cache checked...it'll reboot and flash the Rom.
Remember there's sense and asop not worth flashing over the top of each..I'd flash sense for the meantime...eg. arhd, erebus runnydroid etc etc
Easy..
What he means by not being able to update is to official roms released by HTC...your better rooted anyway
As dn41 said you'll lose root by upgrading
Not advisable lol
It's a minefield to begin with bit worth it
If your on group or gingerbread and happy stick to roms with sense 3.0 like leedroid etc
Runnydrood etc runs sense 3.5 ported from sensation etc...( my opinion better but this differs amongst everyone)
There is miui as well but learn what's cracking first
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
You're still able to receive updates but if you apply them, you will loose root permissions.
Why not flashing a costum ROM like ARHD?
Keep an eye on that, I really recommend flashing it
DN41
Thanx for the replys. Now i have some idea im going to nip on youtube and have a look at rom manager.
Thanx again

Just to clarify a few points made.
Your system partition has been modified, by rooting. Any and all OTA (Over The Air) updates will fail and possibly leave you stuck in a state of "soft-brick".
Here is the very latest Stock ROM from HTC. It has root but nothing else.
[ROM][DEC 8] Official RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1 STOCK ROOTED - The last post has a download link.
Give that a whirl for now.
To "update" to this firmware you will need to flash it via a custom recovery. There are a few available for the DHD. ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) or 4EXT (Touch or Classic).
Always, always backup before you flash/wipe.
As you are coming from Android 2.2 to 2.3 I'd suggest you perform a full wipe.
Format /system , /data , /cache , /dalvic-cache - You can do this from within the custom recovery. Then install the ROM from the .zip. Be careful not to format your /sdcard!
Once you get to grips with what you have done, try the other ROMs available. Same procedure. Backup, wipe, flash.
I almost forgot, welcome to XDA!
Andy....thankyou
My phone has ClockworkMod installed, do I do the backup from that?
I hate being a newb lol, I've got loads to learn. I've switched from iPhone to android, I used to jailbreak my iphone which seemed a lot simpler lol
