Sounds like a corrupt file. Delete the files, clear download cache and try again. Make sure you're on WiFi with a solid signal as any data hiccups can corrupt files.

I did this. No luck. Also I can't update my superuser app so I have the old one with the ninja.
Edit: so I manually flashed the newer superuser zip for 2.2 and it updated that way. I re-downloaded virtous 1.0.1 full rom, thing is like 264mbs I think. Anyway I was on wifi new router full signal and it finished. Same error came up after booting to recovery and trying to flash the zip. Error was file directory and next line was (bad) I have wiped and all. No luck. Please help I'm dying to flash new roms!!

Are you going through rom manager, or simply dl to sd and reboot manually to recover?
HTC Vision 1.8 OC, CM7 RC1==HAPPY!!
I've tried both and they both end up with the same results.
Edit: I've also tried downloading it on my computer and transferring to my phone. Btw this is the guide I used to root my phone. I followed it to the letter. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160

I have checked all the forums and read all the responses i can get on. I am trying to go to Froyo and i have tried both Ava as well as other 2.2 zip files.
I have renamed them to update.zip and YES i checked and triple checked that its not update.zip.zip
I have done a factory reset as well as a wipe of cache and then ran the apply update.zip option from the bootloader
i just keep getting the following
E:signature verification failed
also i see this...
Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Even after wiping everything, i tried it several times, several froyo 2.2 files. What am i doing wrong?
Not rooting your phone completely among other things is my guess.
Also, just flash zip instead of renaming to update.

You don't flash zips in bootloader you do it in recovery
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
My phone was completely rooted before hand, and was using RVU ROM. Also what do you mean by flashing instead of renaming?
also i meant to say that i flashed in Recovery where i saw the Red Triangle and then got the options to wipe cache and factory reset as well as update from Sd card.
If you are fully rooted, you need to install a custom recovery like amon-ra or clockwork. You won't be able to flash a custom rom with the stock recovery. It will fail checking the sig.
If you are using unrevoked, you aren't fully rooted and you need to go do a full root, version dependent of course. You can find instructions for whichever stock rom version you are running in the dev forum.
i don't mean to sound like a jerk, but please read the forum guidelines about where to post.
you want 'Q and A'.
am the same why did you get to root it ??
I just rooted my evo 2.2V following the incredible instructions outlined on XDA. now i have ROM manager installed. I did a backup using the ROM manager app and also downloaded the CM6 ROM using the same app. butwhen i tryed to flash the rom it did not go through. The phone rebooted but gave an error even befour the process could start. I tried it again using the ROM manager with the same results. What could be the issue? the original ROM was downloaded by ROM Manager and is still in the memory and every time i try flashing it, it just comes up with an error and i have to restore the backup. Could this be due to a corrupted dowload or something else. Thanks in advance for the help guys.
I recently used ROM Manager to d/l and flash CM6, no issues. But now when I use it to backup the ROM, it freezes up on a f/c screen after the backup is completed and is rebooting. Replicated the issue twice to be sure. Have to pull the battery. So much for not having to do a real nand, lol.
Still searching for the right thread for my issue.
Update: Cleared d/l cache, flashed RA 1.8 then reflashed Clockwork, all better.

I'm not qualified to tell anyone how to do anything, but you can find directions on how to d/l and place the rom on the root of your sd card, then flash it with recovery. Search out flashing roms and I'm sure you'll get it done.
Clearing and reflashing clockwork on rom manager before you try might not do any harm as well. Never know. Read up, don't trust my word, lol.

Have you tried other roms besides cm6? You will need the .76 hboot with that one. If you are having issues flashing any rom, then you will meed to try unlocking your nand again with toasts Eng bootloader.

I've tried and I've tried, and I've tried and I can't get the newest clockworkmod to flash so I can try to taste some gingerbread. I've looked a lot, and I've tried to use the "easy way" that's stickied at the top of this thread and I've tried to push through terminial as well but it tells me the image isn't found. So, please do not tell me to search and what not because more than half the time I do in fact search, considering I am an active member of this forum I know all about it. Idk if I'm naming the file right, or if I'm suppose to extract files from the zip or what not, but nothing seems to work. So help a brotha out, and tell me what YOU did to get it to flash with step by step, detailed if possible steps. I appreciate you taking the time to read, and possibly help. I know its annoying, but I would love you for ir

post the steps you took, perhaps someone can glean an operational error from that. my guess is you need to navigate to the proper directory or rename the file
I flashed it using terminal from phone and recovery on sd.
I have heard ppl getting issues with that image not found thing, some other files have to be copied to allow the flash_image command to work but cant remember where.
What might work,..... use rom manager to update your recovery if you havent used rom manager before. Then check where rom manager places the downloaded recovery. Then rename ur recovery v3 to the exact same name as the 2.5 and place in the relevent folder, then try to get rom manager to flash it, like tricking it.
This method was reported to work a while back.
Worth a bash?
If fail, drop me a pm, ill have a look for that flash_image binary stuff when i get home tonight pal.

The main plan I was trying to do was replace and trick rom manager into thinking it was the original but it is really 3.0. So I replace thr image and rename and flash clockwork and when I go into recovery and its a no go. Then when I try to flash it via terminal it says the image isn't found when I know it is on the root of my card. Do I need to unzip the file and take the imgage out and place it on the root of my sd card, or put the zip on my sdcard and try to flash it?(doing it via terminal). How do I need to rename the file? I've also read somewhere that I need to have the correct rom binary, is that correct? I'm running a virtuous sense rom right now. What does that mean?

I was having similar problems with flash_image, and I managed to get 3.0.0.5 on there by:
1. Flashing back to stock and starting fresh (did this with a pc10img via bootloader)
2. Rooting via the gfree -f as on the wiki
3. Downloading CW Rom Manager from the market
4. flashing the 2.x recovery that comes with that
5. Use Rom manager to download and install Cyanogen 6.1.1 clearing data and cache
6. Use flash_image instructions linked above by raitchison to install CWR 3.0.0.5.
Probably the long way around, but helped me get a grasp of what all was going on with my phone, and gave me a clean slate to start with. Haven't upgraded to CM7 yet, but now I know I can when I'm ready.
I know it doesn't help you now, but...........
Just read a tweet from koush that he is going to be releasing the CWM Recovery 3.0.0.x officially very soon, he is just waiting on cyanogen to finish running some test with it, so for people having issues with flashing CWM recovery 3.0.0.x you should see some official support from koush real soon.
It actually does help because I can wait a little more for the convicence of flashing. Thank you sir.

That requires that you have the Engineering HBOOT
I got it to work just flashing the reovery through terminal. Turns out since I was using a sense before hand, and not stock of a cm 6.1.1 I didn't have the correct binary for the rom. So I flashed cm6.x.x and then flashed the newest cw3. Its all good.

uhh.. all i had to do was change the name of the recovery.img (3.0.0) the exact same name as the one in ROM manager. reflash with rom manager and its done. Works everytime
there is also a "how to" on it. But if you know how to copy and paste when your SD card is mounted to computer its pretty simple

+1, I don't even mount to my computer though. I do it all through Astro. Easy breezy.
that does work, but the only reason it wasnt working because i didnt have the correct rom binary because i was using virtuous sense.
CWM 3.0.0.5 is now supported by ROM Mnanger, so for all the people having problems flashing the new recovery, rom manager will do it for you.

First make sure your phone is S-OFF AND ROOTED. If it is then the .zip file might be corrupt or something, so just download it again.
Well I think it's something like that anyway.
it is s-off and im already running cm7 but i want to reflash and i dont think there's a problem with the zip file
I think you are using wrong recovery
Let me guess it is yellow from XDA?
You must use blue CWM from Alquez
Got the same problem yesterday.
What I did was updated cwm from general section and it worked
im using blue one....can u send the link nihal??
here's it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229
so 1st put it in ur sd card then go in recovery and then it'll ask u to apdate automatically on the 1st screen where it shows hboot version and all so after updating remove this and then add the rom files and then just install the rom after clearing those cache's and all.
im using this oly but still cant flash even after clean wipe
can u give more info and some pics

More info like GSM or CDMA, where you got the rom you are trying to use, etc...
Are you CDMA or GSM.
What CM7 are you trying to use?
Did you try the latest nightly build for GSM here:
From clockwork mod to clean install wipe factory data then mounts format system then flash zip from sd then choose the nightly=Clean install.
Try reformatting your microSd card.
SD Formatter 3.1 for SD/SDHC/SDXC

Since I am very new to flashing, rooting, etc with Android phones. I was wondering if you guys could give me tips or advice on what my next move would be. So I just reverted my Desire Z to Froyo 2.2 from GB 2.3. Since I want to learn and try out different ROMS - should I:
1) Perma-root and install clockwork recovery mod? Which rooting method is best for Froyo 2.2(kinda confused)?
2) If not, which version of android is best for me to upgrade to be able to root?
3) Lastly, which ROMS are best?
Thanks in advance!
The most supported method (and what 99% of the people will point you towards) is the rooting method on the Xda Wiki. If you follow that you should be fine.
As far as ROMs, everyone has a preference. Complete the steps above and try out what you like. No one ROM (or even handful of ROMs) is the best.
EDIT: DO NOT USE VISIONARY
Good Luck!

1.)Root your Phone the "Clean Way" using Rage http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843014 Be sure to read everything carefully or you brick your phone bro
2.)The best version of Android for Rooting is Stock Android 2.2 NOT 2.2.1 or any version higher!
3.) Every ROM is great just pick the right one for you or you could try the one of the ROMs on my Signature

Thanks for the replies. I ended up using the xda Wiki guide and was able to root my DZ with Froyo 2.2. So far so good, now reading all about the different ROMS that are posted in the development section. Should be done by next week, lol.- theres so many posted. I also trying to learn more about the ins and outs of using the clockwork recovery mod.
Hopefully I don't mess up my backup CP....

Links would help, I haven't heard of ILWT, and "best" is subjective to what you need/looking-for.
Edit: It appears to be a modded/tweaked CM7

Hmm so I encountered a problem. After I chose a ROM to, downloaded it and copied it into the SD card as "update.zip". After going into recovery mode, I get this error message:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
--Intall from sdcard...
Finding ipdate package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
So what do I do now? Can I still go back to Froyo 2.2? Thanks again
what recovery do you have now? I assume clockworkmod, I suggest using 4ext but that's mostly preference.
the rom you chose has a bad sig, probably not a good rom, or even the right one for your phone. go to the developers section and find one of the first threads thatis a compalation of most the roms for your phone. start with a 2.3.x rom
put on the root of your sd card, don't extract the .zip, don't even rename it. boot to recovery, wipe everything, choose install .zip, pick yours and flash (if gapps or other mods needed flash those next, then choose reboot

Yes I am using clockworkmod, downloading Virtous ROM G-lite now and hopefully it installs without any problems.

Does it really make a difference if I rename the ZIP(ROM) file or leave it as is? Since my Desire Z is on rooted stock Froyo, is there another way I can install a newer ROM so I can install one of the ROM managers apps? I believe the ROM manager apps available in the Google PLay market require newer versions of Android to work. Right?
yea I haven't named a rom update.zip since the early g1 days, when you had to so I can't say 100% if that's an issue but I kinda doubt it. so you have the clockwork recovery linked in the xda wiki right? confirm this. also boot into bootloader and write down all on your screen, may help figuring out your problems
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I am using recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-vision. What do you mean by "boot into bootloader'? If I do not rename the file to "update" then whenever you go to recovery, it prompts you that there is no update.zip file the mod can use.
Boot loader/boot/spl I uses these terms interchangeably, this is the screen when you power on holding power+ volume down, on this screen it will tell me what radio, boot you have, if you're son or off, etc
I think the problem is the way you are flashing your rom, haven't used clockwork in years but if I remember right I think you are choosing to flash an update.zip, that's not the way to use it
Choose something like install .zip from SD card, here you scroll to the zip you want and then choose that .zip
In other words explore your options in clockwork a bit more
If your still having problems write the information I asked and tell me where your stuck, but I think you should be good now
