hi, I have been reading a lot about S-OFF how to, but I've read too much & I'm kinda confused right now, can someone help me through if I can get S-OFF, & post me link for the thread I have to read & do exactly.
is it even possible yet?
if not, then what all those threads are talking about?
& if it helps, this's the one X I have

No there is still no way to get S-Off on the HOX. The only way to install a custom rom is via HTCdev but then you'll lose the warranty.

If you read about S-Off on the correct forums (i.e related to One X) then you would know that its not possible yet.

Ignore that thread, don't flash the files. It's for people who know what they're doing. Like it says, bricking is possible.

Ok. I am a noob and a little confused.
So, if I root, I get access to entire operating system files. This enables me to make a full back-up of my phone. Am I right in assuming that I can root without unlocking the bootloader?
If I unlock the bootloader, I am able to load another version of android made by Cynagenmod and others. Can I unlock the bootloader without root or when I unlock it from HTC Dev, it roots my phone automatically? Also, if I do not load any other ROM, will I still be able to get HTC updates?
Where in all this is S-off? I understand that while unlocking the bootloader, HTC Dev still has some locked parts of the OS which is inaccessible due to S-on, but when we root the phone, doesn't it provide access to the locked partitions/files?
Apologies for the basic questions, would appreciate all help.

You can't root yet without unlocking bootloader. You can load other versions of Android (there is no official Cyanogenmod yet, but there are quite a few CM9 and AOKP builds in the dev sections). Unlocking via HTCdev does not auto-root. You can relock after unlocking to get official updates.
Rooting doesn't give us access to being able to write to these partitions. That's what we want from S-OFF.

Thank you so much. Much appreciated.
So to confirm, I have to unlock the bootloader from HTC Dev first, then try the method at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167 to root. I may not want to load the other custom builds right now, I'm still waiting for the Jb/4.0.4 update and also my warranty to run out. In the meantime, figuring out what is what and how it works, although I doubt I will be able to wait out another 9 months.

Firstly, HTCdev unlock will void the warranty, you can search other threads for this. Secondly, that thread is for the HTC One XL (Qualcomm Snapdragon LTE), which is a completely different model to the international HOX (Tegra 3), so you don't want to use that. Here's the correct thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577671
HTCdev unlock also wipes your phone, so you might as well load up a new rom which is already rooted.
Also, if you do decide to HTCdev unlock, make sure you load a new recovery up.I recommend CWM recovery, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594819
Immediately after you do that, take a backup from CWM recovery.

Yup, read about the void warranty bit. And I also noticed that the thread is headed for the One XL, however, it still does show up in the home page of the International One X.
And I get the point about the new ROM. Given I have no hw problems with my phone and i've had it since early april, i reckon I might unlock it this wknd and load up another rom. Thanks again.

hi, I did a trade with some here on the XDA for a galaxy nexus. The phone comes with BAMF ROM but I am thinking of returning to the completely stock rom. Since I do not know much information on this phone, I thought I will ask before doing anything stupid.
I am not sure exactly if this is a international or playstore phone (I think it is international) but I do know it is a GSM phone.
Also, it appears to me that the phone is already unlocked (and I think rooted but cannot be sure).
So my question is how exactly should I go through to get the completely stock as I kind of want to try stock JB first. Do I need to relock it and download the image from google (which image as I see there are two version of phone.
I may try different rom in the future so can I just download teh image and flash the rom without relock it? Or I should still lock the phone, flash, unnlock, unroot?
A little bit of background. I am using the phone on T Mobile's network here in the US, so I want to be able to continue using hte phone on the same T MO.
Thanks a lot for all of the helps guys.
Link to the step-by-step, amazing, descriptive guide here
thanks a lot. I follow that thread and I think I have returned the phone to the stock rom.
Quick question, I think my bootloader is still unlocked as when I checked the bootloader, it looks it still says unlocked. Now after I have flashed the stock rom, should I still root it and also install the recovery if I ever plan to play around with the different roms? As of now, when I into recovery, I see the little andrid icon but no selection.
thansk a lot guys.

If/when you want to root and mess with ROMs, you'll be using a custom recovery like CWM. You don't need to flash it until you choose to do those things.
thanks. Would I need to root again? The phone is already unlocked (as I did not lock it again). So, I would just have to root and then flash the custom recovery then?
BTW, I notice there's a very nice tool on the sticky that does everything. I am curious if I use that tool and let say choose to unlock it again or root again and such, would that be any issue? Ie, if it's already unlocked and you run unlock again, would that relock, etc?

got it, thanks a lot guys. Will have to read up more on the root and flashing rom. Android is still relativly new to me.

Can I root without unlocking the broader?
What is the side effect of unlocking the boot loader?
Is there existing method to root without installing customer recovery?
Thanks

There is currently no known way to root without unlocking the bootloader and using a custom recovery.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you more control over the tablet. Specifically to install custom recovery, ROMs, etc. Most of the benefits from an unlocked bootloader are things you do from a custom recovery, not through the bootloader itself. The only real negative 'side effects' are that you lose some of the safety benefits, since you can do dangerous things if you don't know what you are doing, and that it may void your warranty.
So, if want to root, I must unlock bootloader?
Well I still get ota with bootloader unlocked?

1. Yes
2. Technically you can, but not recommend; just wait for the rooted stock and flash that.

Regarding your #2, there is no reason not to unlock the bootloader to get OTA updates. The only thing that breaks OTA is custom recovery.

Completely correct. I just said not to do it, cause he seems less experienced, and from my experience, they get freaked out afterwards trying to put it back on. So trying to save him a headache, lol.
I recommend staying stock unless you absolutely need a specific root required app.
Right now there isn't a reason for root access except titanium backup.
I do recommend, however, to go ahead and unlock. It will wipe your device including personal data, so might as well get that out of the way now before you risk losing something important.
You can easily flash a custom recovery and root anytime after that, but I would wait until knowledgeable devs figure out the device a little more first.

I'm not sure why you would suggest people not to root now. You mentioned a very good reason to do so - Titanium Backup. Not only is it useful for backups in general, but it's also a lifesaver for copying apps and their data from one device, like someone's old N7, to their new N7.
While I would certainly agree that people should wait before flashing custom ROMs, kernels, hacks, etc., nothing is going to change with rooting your N7 today versus a week or month from now. All the pros and cons will still be the same.

Neither you nor I have any idea what he needs or doesn't. He hasn't said anything other than asking some basic questions about the process. There are numerous guides on here that walk people through rooting step by step. There are also a handful of people who have soft bricked their device and asked for and received help. And yes, I have assisted people with similar issues in the past. Everyone on this board has at one point in their lives screwed something up - that's how we learn.
In any case, my point was that there is no clear reason for him not to do it if he wants to. The device is pretty forgiving unless he kills the bootloader.
The question is pretty much straight
Why does HTC S-On the devices when they allow us to unlock bootloader?
HTC says that the main idea of unlocking bootloader is that you can unleash our own phone.
Why can't they just S-OFF the devices when unlocking the bootloader ?
Can anyone fill me in
Thanks

S-off opens up access to pretty much everything and so allows more control. With that are the risks of totally bricking your device. Staying S-on still gives you some protection from mucking things up and the freedom to flash roms/recoveries/kernels.
I agree though, as people are responsible for their actions and so must know the consequences of modding their devices, they should just give another level of access to remove s-off. The warranty is void once you unlock the bootloader anyway.
More info around s-off/NAND/partitions etc:

You can still unleash some of your phone by just unlocking, which is probably why they gave the option. You can still flash a custom recovery, you can still root, you can still flash custom ROMs.
S-OFF you can flash different firmwares, you can resize partitions, you can convert to other models. Why would the majority want these? And by the looks of some of these threads, why would even some of the majority of "flashers" need it? Root + Custom Recovery + Custom ROM should be enough to satisfy most.
S-ON then just protects the phone from more serious changes that might lead to more serious damage if *you* don't know what *you're* doing.

When you are S-on/BL locked, your carrier (or HTC/Google) is your system administrator. The carriers take this a bit further, and even manage some of your apps. In a lot of ways, you are a guest on the system, even though you "own" it. However, assuming you just want to use it to make phone calls and post to facebook, for most people this is fine. (my wife's phone isn't even rooted)
When you are BL unlocked, you take over some parts of that sysadmin job, and can now replace parts of the operating system and manage your own apps. You can also disable external control of your device by rooting and turning off certain services. However, the truly critical stuff, the stuff that could keep your phone from booting, are outside of your control. You are now no longer a guest, but you aren't exactly an owner either.
When you S-off, you are taking on the job of being the system administrator entirely. You are 100% responsible for what happens to your phone. Your '44, your Magnum rounds, your foot. Be careful.

You wont' hear any arguments from me about that, I've made a post about that ages ago in which I stated that manufacturers should give you the option to have your phone rooted, unlocked and in HTC's case S-OFF, if it's a warranty issue then why not just a bit more for warranty purposes, but we still need the choice. Will they ever do something like that? I doubt they'll do anything like that any time soon but it would be nice and I've said so a long time ago already.
Especially as far as development on the devices are concerned. I don't see why they would share the Kernel source to allow developers to develop for the phone while at the same time expecting the developer to just hack away at the device in order to get the necessary permissions to develop for the device!

Thank the GPL for that last one. Android is essentially a very custom distro of Linux, and the Linux community has already shown that they will go after violators. It's how the Linksys WRT54G became the WIFI router to own. IOW, they release it because they have to, but they don't have to make it easy, or usable.
We have seen with the Samsung and LG devices that it is possible to lock down a device fully such that it won't boot anything that isn't cryptographically signed. They will do as little as necessary to comply with the license, without giving us the ability to actually use that knowledge. After all, what good is kernel source if you don't have a signing key the CPU will accept?
That is the primary reason I chose the M8. It was one of the few flagship phones that is still able to be fully owned.
Hi guys. I purchased this phone used. IDK if it will have Android 6 or 7 installed on it. I know that it's supposed to be carrier unlocked. My goal is to get this rooted and get TWRP so I can install ViperRom.
Do these steps still apply:
1) Unlock your phone with htcdev.com or s-off it with sunshine http://theroot.ninja (using built in temproot)
2) flash latest twrp from http://twrp.me
3) Using adb, in twrp run - adb shell "echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.supersu"
4) flash latest supersu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps...v2-05-t2868133
My understanding is that the Verizon variant would require SunShine app (regardless of whether I'm on Android 6 or 7) and I can't use HTCdev to unlock the bootloader. Can someone please advise what my best course of action is to get TWRP and a custom rom on this thing?

Verizon disables oem unlocking, so you'd need to S-off your device to do any sort of tinkering. From there you won't need to unlock the bootloader, s-off allows you to do everything you need. With that said, if the phone is on Nougat, the only way to s-off is to mail your device to the Sunshine dev. The app won't work for you in that case. If on Marshmallow, you can use the app.
Step 2 is correct, and I don't think you need to step 3 anymore. Just flash whichever rom you need, and they are already rooted so no need to install supersu separately.
Leedroid and ViperROM are probably the most popular Sense-based roms, each with lots of customization options.

No that's what I meant by "verizon disables oem unlocking". HTC Dev unlock = oem unlock = unlocking the bootloader
With the Verizon 10, the only way to flash twrp or anything else is to have s-off. On non-verizon devices, you'd be able to do what you asked.

Please help, I am coming from t mobile to verizon.. and need to buy a phone in the next day or two. I am at a lose to which to buy. If I purchase the HTC 10, what is S - off and what would it entail. I am stuck getting a verizon, in your opinion, which phone should I purchase thats root-able.

Are you interested in tinkering with your phone, installing different software on it? If the answer is no, just go to Verizon and buy the 10 or whichever phone you want.
Edit: Just saw that you want to root.
The situation with the Verizon 10 is described in this thread. If you want to root the thing, you absolutely need S-off ("security off"). If the phone you receive is on Nougat, you have to mail it in for S-Off for 25$. If on marshmallow, you can do it via an app that also costs 25$.

So this may be the one I'll enjoy the most, 25 dollars for s-off wont hurt me that much. I have to get my phone from Verizon and tinkering with it often is kind of my thing. I appreciate your input, So far this sounds like what I'm looking for. thanks again.

No problem, for S-Off the app is called Sunshine, you can go on their website and get support there. The same guys will do it by mail in.
Verizon HTC 10 Root Updates?
Hello,
Newb here...new to Androids and new to looking into rooting/tinkering with ROMs. Is there any update on the current state of rooting the Verizon variant of this great phone? I'm on Nougat 7.0 (2.41.605.20) and I am using the phone on the AT&T Network  I am; however, not happy with the issues with 4G lte that the newest 2.41.xxx is causing. I am wanting to flash Viper 10; as I understand it really optimizes this phone well.
I really do not want to S-Off (I am an Information Security Professional and this speaks against the principles I work by  . Do we know of any way to do this other than sending it to Sunshine? There has to have been some strides in the past 3 1/2 months, right?
Thanks

There's no way to root or flash roms besides getting S-OFF.

Your best bet would be to get SOFF, convert it to the us unlocked version, then put it back to SON, then you'll have newer software/firmware, and have the security re-enabled

Ok...so either way; I'm looking at having to S-Off with Sunshine, then I can do the conversion from Verizon --> US Unlocked as you stated. Do you know if this alone (converting to US Unlocked) will correct the 4G lte issues that the 2.41.xxx has caused with this model? Or...would you recommend that I go ahead and flash Viper 10 ROM?
Thank you and cnat for the responses

It can only help, Verizon is behind the game with software/firmware. I would recommend the swap if you plan on using a GSM carrier long term. Plus you can then flash viper on top of it.

So I came across a couple of articles that said using "Xposed Installer" could be used to flash a new ROM instead of Rooting my device. Do you, or anyone else have any experience with Xposed Installer on the HTC 10?

In order to use Xposed you have to be rooted. Also, at least official Xposed doesn't work on Nougat yet although someone made a modified unofficial version so that it would on some devices.
Can I downgrade from nougat and then use sunshine root? Is it really $25? A brief breakdown of what's up with this phone would be awesome. I've just bought a used one and been away from xda for some time
this thread has worked for people: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...t-unlock-s-verizon-m9-mm-3-37-605-13-t3457717
Yes, it.s $25, but you don't pay if the pre-tests they run show it wont work.
Okay, so I'm having the same problem as OP.
I'm running the latest (4.49.605.11).
My final goal is to s-off my Verizon M9 so I can install LineageOS. The problem is that I sunshine doesn't seem to be able to get root. No problem, right? I'll simply unlock the device first.
Oh, but I can't because the option doesn't exist in the Android GUI to allow unlocking the device to retrieve the identifier token for htcdev.
So then I try to root, and there doesn't seem to be any root tools.
So I look at rolling back to a prior build, but they all give me FAIL12 errors. For the record, I tried going to 3.37.605.7, 3.37.605.13, and 3.37.605.19.
So here's the question. I'm on an unrooted, s-on M9 running 4.49.605.11 on Verizon with no apparent options after 4 hours of trying various things. Can someone tell me what my options are (if any)?
Thanks!

Verizon has never allowed their devices to be unlocked via HTCDEV....
"FAIL12 errors"
are you using the htc_fastboot version of the fastboot command?
heres one place to get it

from thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65358020&postcount=2
edit: I think you may be blocked from downgrading.... Lots of posts state that you can't downgrade firmware without being S-Off already.

I actually tried both the htc_fastboot (verified that I used the same program you linked via checksums) and tried copying the zip file to the phone.
Unfortunately, I did see some that said you couldn't downgrade, so I am kind of leaning in that direction. I couldn't find something that said that you couldn't downgrade from Nougat on an M9, but there were lots of other phones and other situations where you couldn't downgrade. I was hoping to be proven wrong though.
Are "send phone to internet stranger" and "install known malware" really the only options for someone like me or Joshy, running an unrooted, s-on Verizon M9 on 4.49.605.11?

I mean that's great, and I actually expected I could trust them -- but I can't know.
Even your probably-optimistic timetable leaves me without my phone for essentially a week. That doesn't sound like much until you consider my lack of a backup, or how many things I use it for (several of which are important, actually), etc.
People who charge for root/jailbreaks without disclosing their method is unacceptable and antithetical to why this forum exists
