Unable to wireless tether GSM Nexus, Help? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I can't seem to get wireless tethering to work. My GSM Nexus is rooted. The WiFi Tether app runs as it should but the APN never shows up in wireless network lists. I used the same app flawlessly on a rooted Desire. I'm on Vodafone who actively promote using phones for tethering so there is no issue there.
Running stock Android 4.1.1. Root is checked and confirmed with Root Checker. SU appears to be up to date.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks

try selecting your phone model in the wifi tether app settings.
For me, it would always say "connected" but no other information and would not show up on wifi networks. I selected Galaxy Nexus in the settings of the app ( even though Im on a HTC VIVID, just for one more day until I get my nexus) and the second time after connecting, It also displayed upload and download realtime information.
Somethings you just have to nudge these things a bit

Have you tried turning on the WiFi tethering via the native settings menu, rather than an app?

Thanks for the suggestion but I've already done that. I tried Auto, Generic, both Nexus options and the Galaxy S2 options plus a couple of other randoms from the list just for good measure. None seem to work at all. I've also tested the APN on a laptop, my TF300T pad and my old Desire and it doesn't show on any of them so it must be the Nexus at fault.

Yeah, I did. It connected but I couldn't surf at all even with good 3G/H reception. I tried both wifi and BT using my ASUS pad.

I just got my nexus, a few hours ago.
I set up my phone, I am on AT&T (without a wifi plan, grandfathered into "unlimited" )
I turned on wifi hotspot, system wifi hotspot not a playstore app.
and...well..it works for me without any problems.
I did add the at&t pta apn. I know its not an LTE phone, but the PTA apn has pretty good service compared to the others.

if you are on AT&T try adding the pta apn and see if that helps?
if on a different network, search and see if you can find other apn settings.

Enabling 3G Internet after unlock

I managed to get my Bell SGS unlocked last night, and after a while of playing around with the settings, I realized there was no 3G switch. When I go to:
Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Mobile Networks
the only things I see are: Data Roaming -- Acces Point Names -- Network Operators
I'm trying to connect to Telus' data network so I called and they made me input the following APN:
Name: telusSP
APN: sp.telus.com
proxy: 74.49.0.18
port: 80
username: not set
password: not set
server: not set
MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc
MMS proxy: 74.49.0.18
MMS port: 80
MCC:
MNC:
Authentication type: not set
APN type: internet + MMS
but theres no button to enable 3g internet anywhere.. is something not set up correctly?
I had to make software reset after unlocking (but my phone wasnt working anymore after unlocking..)
suggestion, we should add all these info in the Wiki pages

Hah funny stuff that's it not automatic like most providers. Telus must be awesome eh
When you add the APN it should automatically connect. I unlocked my SGS Saturday morning and it connected to 3G/HSPA as soon as the APN was added and selected.
yeah, my fido one works fine on 3G/HSPDA
In the APN list you need to press on the grey circle next to the one you setup and it'll turn green.

Its highlighted in green, yet no enable/disable 3g switch anywhere.. and no connectivity..
if I were to do a factory reset, maybe it would fix it automatically? would it unroot and relock my phone though?
EDIT: Okay, I deleted it, and re-added the APN, and it all works fine now. Thanks for the help

[Q] Enabling LTE on new Bell Samsung GS3

Hi there,
I just got a new GS3 in Edmonton and Wifi works great but it wont connect to the LTE network or any network for that matter. Once I turn wifi off I have no connection to any network. In settings under mobile network I have "auto mode" for GSM/HSPA/LTE networks enabled. I have a SIM card that says LTE on it.
Does anybody know how I can turn this one?
Cheers.
Are your apn settings there?

I am in my APN settings. I assume it is the Access Point Names tab. When I click that tab it says "Browser, pda.bell.ca". When I click on that it opens ip a bunch of settings which I cant edit. It does say APN enabled though.

What carrier are you with? Bell? I am assuming it's a Bell phone LOCKED to Bell.
You definitely need ALL the specific settings for the APN. (the APN name is not important itself) I am on Rogers so I do not have your needed settings. Look around the forum or re ask the question for the APN details. Someone who uses Bell can help.
I found the settings:
Bell Mobility:
APN Name: Bell LTE
APN: pda.bell.ca
Proxy: web.wireless.bell.ca
Port: 80
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: h.t.t.p.://mms.bell.ca/mms/wapenc
MMSC proxy: web.wireless.bell.ca
MMS port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 610
APN type : <Not set>
So i tried "restore to defaults" and it loaded up with all of this information, except the Proxy: web.wireless.bell.ca or the Port: 80
When i tried New APN with these settings it did not work and when I rebooted the device it erased the new APN I added.
When change your apn setting ,do not forget to save them using your menue button, on bottom left of your phone.

If you have problems getting LTE with cm10.1 on SGS3 d2att

I've been trying to get LTE on my SGS3 on cm10.1 on for a long time without any luck. Hspa+ was the best I could get. Even when selecting LTE in network provider setting.
This morning I tried again without any success. For some reason I left it on LTE but abandoned my try. I was playing with the phone and went to phone info with *#*#4636#*#*. This is where I noticed that preferred network type was set to unknown and not flavor of lte. I've then forced lte there and magic I now have lte!
I think there may be a bug in cm when you select the preferred network type in network settings. For the phone it translate to unknown. When you force it in phone info (*#*#4636#*#*) it correct the problem.
Hope it will help others.

I was never able to get LTE on CM 10.1. 4G is all I'd get (4G is actually LTE). Usually I remove all APNs and enter only one with following settings:
Name: Rogers LTE
APN: ltemobile.apn
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
User Name: not set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
Authentication Type Not Set
APN Type: internet + mms <---DO NOT ENTER THIS INFO - READ BELOW
APN Protocol: IPv4
Instead of internet + mms, enter "*" <--without the quotes.
When using an APN loading program, ther internet + MMS are options that come up in a menu. It seems that if you manually type them in like this, the modem doesn't like it. The asterisk does the trick.
Naturally I'm on Rogers so for AT&T and other carriers settings might be different.
Hope this helps.
SIDENOTE:
I'm on TW based ROM now and interestingly enough I never had issue with LTE so I never had to enter APN settings manually.

Stock, Rooted phone loses cell service when wifi is on

The past couple days, my phone keeps losing cell service within a minute or two of connecting to wifi. Sometimes it will connect back up for a few minutes if I search for an available network, but it will always disconnect again. I have tried restarting as well as running this app.
I have one APN
Code:
Name: T-mobile US LTE
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not Set
User name: Not Set
Password: Not Set

MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc

MNC: 260
Authentication type: None
APN type: default,mms,supl
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Enable/disable APN: APN enabled(Checked)

Any help would be appreciated!

I turned it on after it stopped working. Will try disabling it again.
Nope, less than a minute after turning on wifi, it returns to (Searching). Interestingly enough, I'm able to browse at least the play store when it is searching(And wifi is off). It took a couple minutes for it to reconnect to services. I'm just not able to send or receive texts(Haven't checked calls yet)

Wouldn't really make sense why it is consistent with wifi being on, but working when its off.
This actually happened to me for the first time this entire morning. I didn't realize for hours till I wasn't receiving and couldn't send any texts. I use stock with root.
Now at least I know and will keep an eye out for it if it decides to happen again. However using wifi since than I have not had it happen again nor does it seem to disconnect anytime after either from the cell network.
This has been happening to me since I've had the phone when it was released. I always get dropped wifi when viewing twitch tv or something. I'm about to call T-Mobile to see what I can do because it's just to much of a inconvenience.

No network on US version with ATT

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem or can help with a solution. I just got my Oppo 7 (love this thing) but it seems the network doesn't work properly. The network seems to be picked up just fine, full bars, under network settings it automatically acquires the APN settings and everything, but I can't do anything over the air without WiFi. As soon as the WiFi is gone, I can't browse the internet, send or receive text messages, etc. What do?
Will this help? Won't be LTE, but H+ (my phone doesn't have LTE)

I have mine set up on T Mobile and I'm having the same problem. It's pretty annoying. I've tried a factory reset to no avail. My phone downloaded an update this morning which I hoped would fix the problem, but it looks like it hasn't.

That's odd. There's one thing wrong with this device on stock - its APN database for AT&T is 3-4 years out of date. It was still using the wap.cingular APN when I turned mine on.
You need to manually put in the AT&T LTE APN (pta). ALSO if you've never owned an LTE device before you'll need to talk to AT&T to have your account updated. (Using the pta APN with a Nexus 5 resulted in no data for me too until I had my plan/account updated. You can do this without an actual contract change - for example I'm still grandfathered in to "unlimited data"). In general I would recommend doing this in-person at an AT&T-owned store, not at the phone and not at a franchisee (like most small mall kiosks).
Thanks for the reply everyone, I entered in the new ATT HSPA+ APN and it works like a charm now.

Just putting in the pta APN with no other info was enough for me.
(MMS is probably borked for me until I fill in the right settings for it but I use MMS maybe once every 3 years at most.)

I have this as my settings now and still only get H+. (except for the mmsc, you have 3 m's)
Weird thing is that I get 0 connection when I change from phone to pta.
Not sure if locale is the culprit. I'm in Oklahoma City.

I went to the ATT store, but they weren't any help. They confirmed that the SIM they gave me was lte compatible, but I assumed that's the same thing as having an LTE data package. I'll give them a call tonight and let you all know. (btw, just re-applied your settings and still no luck)
edit: called.. and they claim that all accounts have lte compatibility now and of course she had never heard of the OF7a
The settings entropy posted were the exact settings my N5 had which I copied over and worked fine. One thing to be aware of is that mine says 4G on LTE and then either H or H+ for those, not sure if this applies only to my service area or what and another might show differently. At any rate if you're getting 4G showing you might wanna run speedtest and see if you are getting LTE.

AT&T's SIMs have been LTE compatible for years, even before AT&T had an LTE network. I need to check to be sure, but I'm fairly certain my SIM is still the original "cut down SIM" that I've had since 2011 at least.
It's your account that needs to be LTE-enabled.
Don't call. Phone support is awful. Go to a corporate-owned AT&T physical store. That's where the competent staff are.
(In my case, I originally did the LTE upgrade on a Nexus 5 - if you put a SIM into a Nexus 5 that doesn't have LTE on the account, you'll get a text message saying to call AT&T.)
