I recently rooted my phone following the instructions posted on this forum. Everything went great and I have been running my phone rooted for a number of weeks now (EK02).
Well, I redownloaded the e4gtauto-sfx.exe package, ran the OTA Compliance check for EK02-EL29 and everything was fine. I proceeded to go with options C and then L (Install BootImg EL29+CWM-Rogue) and that went without a hitch, rebooted and everything appears to be running fine. I checked my phone settings and noticed the following:
Baseband Version: S: D710.10 S.EK02
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL29-CL852097
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.EK02

Can someone explain why the baseband version and build number still say EK02? I was under the impression that information above would all say EL29. Should I run the OTA update?

Can't explain to you why it still says that but I'm running EL29 ROMs and they still say baseband EK02 so don't run it again. It's updated and as long as its running fine, leave it alone.
Edit: After looking at QBking77's video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfZaALRWANQ&feature=player_embedded#!, at the 49 sec mark it shows build number EL29 and Baseband EK02. Hmmm, not sure what that means. So I guess at least the baseband should have changed.

I'm not running any custom ROMs at the moment. I just wanted the phone rooted. The interface looks the same as it did when I got the phone. When I update via the auto process I described above, is it only updating the kernel? Does the broadband version and build number refer to the user interface?
Total Noob here, but a friend rooted my phone (to give me WIFI tether, did not flash a ROM) yesterday and this morning Sprint pushed the EL29 update which I installed. Did I screw up by installing the OTA update on a root-only phone?

I could be wrong, and if I am, I'm sure to be corrected. Your Baseband, kernel, and ROM (what the build number refers to) are all seperate parts. The Baseband I believe refers to your modem. It looks like the only thing you updated was the kernel, as the recovery (CWM-Rogue) is actually part of the kernel, not your ROM. Make sure the ROM you're running is EL29 based. To flash the updated EL29 modem, check out the Epic 4G Touch development forum, there is a thread stickied with all of the available modems that are flashable from CWM.

You just lost root. Installing any update pushed by the carrier will remove your root access.

Appreciate the help. That cleared a lot of things up for me.
Once I update those components to the appropriate EL29 components, do you know if the Sprint OTA update notification will go away or do I need to just go ahead and follow the stickied thread about disabling update notifications?

How do I go about getting root back, without the help of my friend? Thanks for your help. Pretty sure he used the auto root method with et4g files, etc from what I watched him do.

So after reading the Autoroot thread you linked, am I interpreting it correctly that since I updated with the OTA EL29, I can't have stock root (as I had previously) but root + CWM Rom? If so, what does this change on my end as far as the Touchwiz interface, etc? Does tethering/Hotspot come automatically with CWM? Thanks for your patience as I am guessing these are pretty rudimentary questions.

CWM or ClockworkMod Recovery is simply a custom recovery that is used for various purposes. With CWM you can do a nandroid backup,flash ROMs, Kernels, Themes, etc. A custom recovery is something you definitely want. The touchwiz interface will not be affected at all by achieving root or installing a custom recovery. Wifi-Tether is not something that is automatically installed with root, however once rooted, you should be able to install Wifi-Tether without any issues.

You can have exactly what you had before. If you want just root, you can have that. If you want root+CWM you can have that. If you want just CWM, you can have that.
What they plugged in EL29 is the exploit used by the Auto Root package (Option A) to achieve root. Instead of having you run Option A, I just did it for you and pre-rooted a EL29 ROM and packaged it as an ODIN One-Click.
Basically you just double-click on the ODIN One-Click, reboot your phone into d/l mode, connect your phone to your PC, and press start.
Use the ODIN EL29 link in my signature.
If you want CWM, just use Auto Root Option C to install EL29+CWM-Rogue (you don't need to do this unless you want to)

The OTA Compliance Check is there to tell you *if* the OTA update will be successful on your phone. It checks all the files the OTA patches to make sure they haven't been deleted or modified.
You would still need to run the EL29 OTA update to actually get a full EL29. However, I would suggest you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click in my signature, as that will keep your root.
Option C in Auto Root only installs CWM (which is packed into the EL29 kernel), thus only your kernel changed version #s. Ideally you would run the aforementioned pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click to have a rooted stock EL29, then decide you want CWM, and run Auto Root Option C to install EL29+CWM-Rogue.
Alternatively, you might be on a previous version of the ROM but want to try the EL29 kernel and would install EL29 or EL29+CWM-Rogue to see how it performs with your previous ROM.

I haven't read the sticky about disabling the update notifications but I'm running all EL29 (custom ROM, modem and, EL29 based kernel) and do not get the update notifications.
There is an application called Sprint Installer that handles OTA updates and notifications which may be stripped out of the ROM I'm using. You can uninstall or freeze the Sprint Installer with Titanium Backup.
so does EL29 work better than the Ek02?
Depends. For some people yes, for some people no.
I'm actually having trouble....
I got the message saying that a new update can be installed. I click it but when it tries to install it it gives me the android guy with the triangle and "!" mark in it. It won't update :/. I use the UnNamed Rom v2.0.1. I then tried to wipe the phone back to factory reset. I wiped to factory reset, wiped cache, and wiped delvik cache. Maybe then I could download the new EL29 OTA. I tried to restart the phone and I just get the Samasung Galaxy S2 logo and it hangs.
When I install the UnNamed Rom zip, it works again.
Please help.... I am kinda new to this. :/
I just want to get ride of the notification. I'm a freak about not having anything up there .
So is there something we need to download to get this update? Kinda new to root so don't really know what to do here.

O lord! My Galaxy 2 is rooted, and I woke up this morning to that OTA update. It's stuck on the little green android and exclamation screen. Any ideas where to go from here? Thanks for any suggestions....I don't want to brick my phone.

Just hit the home button and you should see recovery, home or power, I forget which I hit but once I did the exclamation went away and I just rebooted normally.
I searched and didn't get exact answer to easy my mind.
If I want to upgrade to EL29 I am rooted on stock EK02, I need to unroot and then re-root correct?
I have read some are seeing better wifi strength with EL29.
So my questions are:
(1) Is it worth it to go to EL29?
(2) Is it a simple process to unroot, do the update, then root again with the EL29 root one click? Is is the same steps as EK02
You don't need to unroot, if that is all you did. If, using your root powers, you installed CWM, uninstalled bloat, otherwise made changes to your ROM, then those would need to be undone *if* you wanted to apply an OTA patch-style update to get EL29.
EL29 plugged the exploit that was being used by Auto Root to root your phone, so EL29 cannot be directly rooted right now. However there are alternatives:
1) you could use the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click in my signature. After it is installed, use Option C in Auto Root to install CWM if you want it

I was about to respond.. but man sfhub, you are always on top of these type of posts! I've learned a lot from reading your posts. You're always very clear on instructions and don't assume everyone knows everything.
Am I clear that if I am stock rooted and accept the OTA, in order to root again I wud need a modified ROM... I wud not be able to root for just wifi tether??

There's no sense in accepting OTA updates anymore if you are rooted. We get it here on xda faster than sprint pushes them out. It will just break root anyway (assuming you haven't modified any system files, delete bloatware, ect). If you modified some stuff, the update would fail. I wouldn't bother with it. The easiest way would be to ODIN the pre-rooted EL29 stock in sfhub's signature. It'll update the modem, rom and stuff to EL29. Use the 'no-data' version if you want to keep all your data intact. That's what I did, coming from a stock EK02, only rooted.

If you use the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click in my signature "modified ROM" is really just the addition of 3 files to the ROM to root it. Everything else is stock. It is exactly the same as if you ran Option A on your own ROM. It is just done for you. In fact, you could actually use Option B in Auto Root to unroot your phone and it would be 100% stock.
Same goes for the rooted EL29 OTA in my signature.
sfhub....Thanks for the tips. You showed me how to root a couple weeks ago and it has been great. I'm still cautious and didn't do many tweaks. I did freeze a few apps including voice command so I didn't have to use that every time I wanted to bluetooth dial.
So if I haven't made any major changes to the stock rooted EK02 I can just use the option #2 you said, right? And just pull it from your sig?

Yes, freezing is fine. Only uninstalling or modifying would cause the OTA to fail.
In the instructions for the EL29 OTA there will be an optional step to run the EK02->EL29 OTA Compliance Check. Just run that and it will tell you if anything is missing or changed. Takes around a minute. SHA1FAIL for kernel/zImage is expected. Any other MISSING or SHA1FAIL would need to be addressed.

FYI: This is stock Not rooted.
I got the prompt this morning on my Sprint Galaxy S2 Epic Touch 4g for a system update to ICS It had a full charge I clicked to reboot it started counting down and all it did was reboot, it didn't update I checked the about section and the build and everything is the same and if I go to the system update area now it just says your phone is up to date. Any ideas on what happened?

Something probably went wrong and it didn't boot into recovery or if it did, it is possible the update had some issues.
There is probably a log file in the /cache directory somewhere.
If you really want FF18, IMO the simplest way is just download the pre-rooted FF18 ODIN OneClick here;

Thanks for the prompt reply, I appreciate it. I just booted into recovery and wiped the partition cache and rebooted to see if that would help at all. If not then I may just have to manually update as suggested.
I've been using one of Calkulin's ROMs - If I want to try out the stock ICS update, should I flash back to a stock GB ROM first or would I still get a notification to update?
If you are on a custom ROM, you might get the notification, but it won't pass the verification stage when it tries to install.
I would just use the pre-rooted FF18 ODIN OneClick (Full Version) available here:

I found the firmware update at the link below and downloaded it and renamed it to update.zip and rebooted to recovery and ran the update from sd and it updated fine

Today I received the new update message, last time it tried to install it itself after 3 times postponed. But for for reason it failed. Is it because the phone is rooted ?
What if AT&T release the Jelly bean update in the future and I want to install it. How do I fix the update error message? Do I need to un-root the phone first ?

+1. I also have stock LEM firmware and I am rooted(everything is stock though). When I try to update to LG1 via OTA, it downloads the update and reboots in CWM and fails to update. When I plugin via Kies to update, it times out.
Is there any way to update to LG1 when you are rooted?

Correct me if I'm wrong but it should work if you have the stock recovery - which in your case you don't but not necessarily in the OP's case. Unless the OP wasn't perfectly clear.
Maybe you need to go back to stock first?

I am not worry about the minor update from AT&T, we all expect to get Jell Bean soon. Just want to make sure we can download the update and install it properly without any errors. So should we go stock? What will be the steps? Download the stock firmware and use Odin flash it back?
I wouldn't worry about the official update. Usually in a day or two of official release, there will be an official firmware in package in the development section.
Did you mean we can just download the custom jelly bean firmware and install it as custom rom instead of the official one from AT&T? I think that make sense.

When its released, yes. That's one reason there are threads just for stock firmware.
Thanks for helping out an Android noob. I recently rooted and installed CWM recovery. This is my first OTA update since doing so and I haven't been able to find any clear instructions on what to do.
I assume there are a few options - I'd love to hear what they are and what advantages/disadvantages each has. I'm assuming I can unroot and go totally stock but I'm not really sure how to flash a stock recovery. I've also read that using OTA Rootkeeper is a great way to temp unroot then reroot after the OTA. I'm a little confused since I see a similar option in the SuperUser app - does that work as well?
I also am wondering if there will be a CWM flashable package in the near future that we can use and if it's worth waiting for something like that?

I am running rooted stock (without CWM) and I simply used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and then did the update. Since you have CWM, I think you've got a few additional steps.

Thanks but I've been following that thread - there aren't any instructions just comments on personal situations. I'm sure there are many like me who need a bit of a guide for this specific situation. It definitely sounds easier without CWM - I'm surprised I can't find any clear instructions on how to revert to stock recovery.
You can get the OTA as long as your are running a stock ROM! or worst case scenario you just have to update through Kies!!
Use odin to install stock rooted image and recovery. Then get voodoo ota rootkeeper from the play store. Run it to preserve root. Check for software update. Install update. Restore root with rootkeeper. Reinstall custom recovery. Done.

From what I understand you need to unroot to get the OTA - though Kies might be a workaround.
I'm specifically talking about rooted WITH CWM. You cannot get the OTA without stock recovery (based on what I've read).
