Anyone try using a GSII or similar car dock? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm contemplating replacing my Epic 4g Touch with a GSM Galaxy Nexus, but I would like to know if I'll be able to reuse my car dock (Samsung d710), since right now it is a nice quick way to get the phone to charge and get audio out without having to plug in two cables every time. If the phone won't physically fit, will the GNex still go into car mode and put the audio through the USB port the same way?

I just went from an Epic 4G Touch to a Sprint Galaxy Nexus. I bought the Samsung Infuse car and desk docks when AT&T was closing them out last year.
The desk dock recognizes the phone and switches to the clock display when I plug in the phone, but the car dock doesn't automatically switch to car mode.
I have installed the Google Car Home APKs but I haven't figured out how to get car mode to start on its own yet. If anyone else has this combo working, I would appreciate instructions.

I bought the Infuse Car Dock in hopes it would work with my Verizon Nexus since it was only $15, but so far no luck. It fits when modified, but nothing happens through the USB port. Full details here:

Dang, I hadn't even noticed that it wasn't getting power. (I miss the charging light on my E4GT.) Thanks for the info and let us know if you get it working, or at least charging.

Slightly off topic but if you want a charging light, the app Light Flow can be setup to light up the nexus's LED when charging and completed.

Thanks! Guess it's time to finally break down and buy Light Flow.

Hmmm, I guess I'm losing optimism about this working. I ordered the Nexus, and will at least test with the E4GT dock first. Might just have to wait for the official Samsung Gnex POGO pin dock, but then I'll need to come up with a clever mounting scheme (currently I only use half the E4GT dock and it's screwed into a dash trim piece; semi-permanently, heh) and possibly move the circuit boards behind the dash. Ahhh!

Official Samsung Galaxy Tab Keyboard Dock (pics)

I know we all want a good working accesory for our Galaxy Tab. Well, the Samsung keyboard dock works really well with the tablet.... especially because it has Android Keys, its own charging port, and a speaker line out.
I recommend it if you are looking for a tab keyboard.
Some pics are attached for the community....
Also a very quick video about the Android Keys....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFuhRIdkWdU
Hope this helps some of you that are looking into this keyboard.
Where can I buy it.
Looks very nice.
Do you have an link to the shop so I can order one?
I will appreciate that.
planning to get this!
how does it connect? Through the port, or is it bluetooth?
@Rodus - I bought it at Best Buy yesterday.
All you do is dock it landscape mode. Dock it and its ready to go.
One thing is.... if you use a custom keyboard on your tab like swype... when you dock the tab, itll revert you back to stock keyboard. That is the only downside I have found.
Great Video, thanks.
A few questions:
-The way the tab recharges is only if the port on the right is used, meaning connected to the A/C with the charger that came with the Tab?
-If so, if we would like to plug in a USB adapter, it's either the adapter or the charger, correct?
-If we don't plug in the charger on the right, does the keyboard work? Is the Charger charging the keyboard as well? or does it get powered in other ways?
-What ports are in the back?
-Do you think this keyboard is somewhat portable? Or is it pretty much for home use?
-Does it come with a pouch or anything else?
Thanks!

- Yes.... plug your AC to the keyboard while the tab is docked and it charges the tab.
- Dock your tab and plug your USB 30 pin adapter and you are good to go. Its either the AC for charge or the USB for transfer.
- The 30 pin is only for charging the tab. I'm thinking the keyboard is powered by the tab.... The keyboard doesn't have any batteries or anything like that... which makes it portable and really easy to work with. No plugs needed, just dock anywhere and the keyboard works.
I'm currently doing a few test to see what drains more battery, docked with the keyboard or undocked.
- The back of the keyboard only has a speaker line out, that's it. An HDMI would have been perfect but they put the HDMI connector on the media dock.
- No pouch... Its very light, portable, and has a very solid build with a rubber bottom so it doesn't slide around while you type. The tablet weights 567grams and the keyboard weights 609grams... I put them on the scale just now.
Hope that helps.

Nice!
my thoughts:
-if you buy the Hdmi adapter dongle it shoud work in the 30 pin adapter of the keyboard, you can connect to the tv.
-The media dock does NOT have an HDMI connector - you still need the Hdmi Adapter. What the media dock does is... it basically holds the Tab.
-great that the keyboard is so portable. Add a bluetooth mouse and there you have your power station.
Let us know about the battery test!

Picked mine up from Best Buy this morning.
Oh, no wonder I am having problems with the keyboard. I froze the stock keyboard, so the dock keyboard has been giving me some problems.
I will defrost it and see if it's back to normal.
Yep. Worked.
So far I'm absolutely loving the keyboard dock.
Anybody else having issues with the dock randomly disconnecting and reconnecting, it also seems to do it when waking up the device from sleep mode.
I am also feeling slightly uncomfortable with the dock due to the slight amount of movement from front to back when moving the device with the dock attached, really wish the 10.1 locked in.
On another note I don't usually notice it disconnect and reconnect when the device is plugged in to AC but it seems like when off the charger the dock is very finicky. If anyone can unplug the charger from your dock and see if you put your tab to sleep than wake up the tab, see if it dings like you have just plugged in the keyboard. I am wondering if it shuts the dock off to save power than turns it back on when you wake it up. Still doesn't solve the random but very short disconnects.
I am seriously contemplating calling Samsung to see their opinion on weather or not the bit of movement with the device on the dock will cause any premature failure of the docking/charging plug. Seems like a lot of stress on the jack when moving the device on the dock. Starting to think about the Extended Warranty due to fear of the possibility of breaking the Dock Connector inside the tab.
I will be getting the Samsung keyboard, or the one by Logi tech

I'm still undecided as to which one l plan on getting

You can find it here on the best buy website. It says that it is black, but the picture shows white. I'm curious too what color they have because it may help me determine if I want white or metallic gray.
Only one I've seen so far is white, including at Best Buy... Don't know that a black one exists
So I'm digging the keyboard dock. It does tend to be a bit possessed at times. It won't register when I cradle the Galaxy on rare occasion (it makes the docking sound but the key presses don't register). Sometimes I'll be typing and it will jump to the address bar for the web browser and the on screen / display keyboard will come up. Then a bunch of "o" keypresses or something along those lines will start inputing. When it works, it's awesome. I'm using it to to type this right now. When it's possesed it is a headache.

609 grams just for the keyboard is quite a lot. I'd rather get a lighter bluetooth keyboard and prop up the tablet with an adjustable case or the cheap Arkon stand...
i picked this bad boy up today and almost freaked because it didnt want to work for like a hour. It refused to respond, I tried it connected and not connected to the AC adaptor. Literally went to return it but was too late the store closed, went home and put it on to charge and it magically decided "oh damn he is serious, I guess I should work" and decided to do what its meant to.......
going to do some more testing before I decide to keep it....wont stand for a item that chooses when it wants to work

Car Charger Spec Query

i am looking for a decent [working, cheap and quick charging] car charger.
I know I'll need at least a 1amp [right?] however i have seen a few that charger at 1amp and 2.1amp
is it going to ruin my battery if i use 2.1amp?
anyone found and goodies out there?
thanks
I second this request, i've got a few generic car chargers from older gear that i've tried with the galaxy nexus. So far they all come up as charging via usb, and so the phone loses power when the navigation/bluetooth/etc/etc is all on. I understand the power requirements, and looked into the data-cable soldering malarkey solution, but my soldering skills in the "fire hazard" class at best so i'd much rather an off the shelf solution.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could point out a car charger that they know/strongly suspect works fine.
Cheers
so the same car charger i've been using for my nexus one for navigation won't work with the GNex?

No, but it won't charge the battery faster either.
More amps is fine. Your phone will only pull what it needs, even if more amps are available.

Also be aware that even though some car chargers state they can supply >1A current, some phones (like my Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus) will not recognize it as a high speed charger.
Smartphones and other devices check to see if the data pins (D+ and D-) are shorted or have a specific resistance before activating high-speed mode since normal USB data specifications say that devices should only pull <500mA from the port.
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IW79ZC/?tag=68656c7064757-20, which is supposed to supply 1A, but I when I plug my phone in with a normal USB micro cable, it says it's charging through "USB" vs "AC", where "AC" is the high-speed charging.
I've made a hacked cable adapter, though, which has the data pins shorted. When I use this with the car adapter, it charges at full speed. You should check to be sure that your phone is fully utilizing the charger by going into the Settings > Battery menu.
Hi all,
I thought I'd share how I've gotten on. There's a 2.1a charger that maplins sell that I thought might do it, but alas no - still comes up as "Charging(USB)". I know taFFer solved the problem with a little solder, and a lot of forum threads also suggest the same fix, but the last time I picked up a soldering iron actually ended with a trip to A&E (long, embarrassing, story) so I was still keen to find an off the shelf solution.
Anyway, after reading a lot more forums, I found a few different people recommending the same motorola charger. Amazon UK sell it, so I stuck in an order. Details below:
MOTOROLA P513 MICRO USB IN CAR CHARGER, £5.45*
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000S5Q9CA
*above item(s) sold by and shipped from Keep Talking
It arrived today and sure enough simply plugging it into the car results in it appearing as Charging(AC). I've not gone on a long enough drive to know about charging speed when gps/bluetooth/etc is all going, but if anyone else is after a cheap car charger that just works without hacking your own cable I think this is the one.
Cheers
***EDIT***
After criss-crossing the country over the xmas period i can tell you this charger is working fine for me. Even when using all the gps, bluetooth, screen on, etc that i can muster (while still driving straight!) the phone gains power and would often come out the car more charged than when it went in. The charger has one annoyance - they've built in a blue led to the charger which is lit up the whole time the thing is plugged in and thats kind of distracting, i don't really know what they were thinking with that, but otherwise i've no complaints.

My Sprint Galaxy note 2 Wireless Charging mod *No holes!!*

Hey guys. I just wanted to show you how I successfully added wireless charging to my Note 2.:good:
Parts used:
-Palm Touchstone back cover: Here
-Palm Touchstone Charging Dock: Here
-3M Copper tape
-Solder
-Liquid electrical tape
No need to cut holes in the plastic. Works like a charm!
Even though I probably wont use it due to the fact I will always have a case on my phone, and it wont work through the case. I can still show it off to my friends with GN2's for fun..lol.
Notes:
Pad closest to the top of the phone is Positive, closest to the bottom is negative.
Magnets hold the phone in place on the charger, but placement of the inductive unit on the back cover is key so the bottom of the phone sits flush on the table.
Heres some pics.
Its pretty self explanatory.
If you have any questions or need more help/info let me know.
Some more pics...
And some more..
Pretty cool. How long does it take you to charge the battery from dead to full charge with induction charging.

Well, I just finished it last night. I usually only charge it at night, and I usually am still not completely dead by the end of the night anyways. To be honest I did it just for fun, I dont really think I will actually use it too often only because I wont go without a case on the phone, and it wont work with a case. But just for kicks ill try to kill the battery and test the time to a full charge and post the results..
This is pretty neat. I was thinking about using my og EVO 4g wireless charging stuff and cannibalizing it to do the same but never got up the motivation to do it. Sweet that it works. +1 for you sir for ingenuity.

Nicely done.
Have been contemplating doing mine as well.
Getting it to work through some kind of case is key.
My evo didn't seem as fiddly to hold on too. The note is a little harder to hold on too and just a matter of when the I drop it
A case like the uag that I'm using now but with an exposed back would work just right.
I used a qi receiver and it charges through my seidio surface case no problem.

My sprint note 2 has had problems charging from USB.USB was lose and the screen wouldn't work sometimes while charging .so I took the phone apart to find a way to hook up a charging port.I dnt have a wireless charger but knew where the prongs were supposed to be.I instead soldered the positive and negative to the prongs.I then soldered the other end of the wired to a auxiliary input female end.And used the male end on the usb/wall charger end.Works just fine to charge.my phone doesn't stop on its own and I am able to use it without the touch screen hanging up.hit a 100% for the first time in months.
Hi. What qi receiver did you purchase? And was it for your sprint SPH-L900 note 2? I have this one but cannot find a qi receiver.

Wireless charging confirmed working on our T-mobile S4

Hey guys, don't know if people have done this already, but I just got a T-mobile S4 for testing this weekend and I wanted to find out if the wireless charging port was enabled since I've done the touchstone wireless charging mod on my S3 and note 2.
It was especially a PIA on the note 2 since T-mobile, in all of its corporate and engineering wisdom, decided to disable the feature for the Note 2, even though it was enabled for the S3. So for those of you who don't like to dissemble your new phone and solder on a tiny PCB, you'll be happy to know that I confirmed that wireless charging ports on the S4 is indeed enabled.
I took a pack of 4x AAA battery assembly, which provides ~4.7v of DC power, and connected to the charging port in the back. The small pair on the left is the charging port, the pair on the right is supposedly NFC, even though the NFC antenna is located on the battery for S4.
As you can see from the pics, the "the phone is now charging wirelessly" notification pops up when the circuit is live, which is pretty annoying IMO and can't be disabled (that's why we have custom roms right?)
I haven't gotten a chance to install the actual touchstone wireless charging receivers on the back yet, as this is a test unit that I have to return, but I don't imagine this to be too different than on the S3. There will be a slight bulge, but it'll be worth it.

Just follow the instructions from this thread (it's for an S3). The design for S3 is pretty similar, so it should work. Remember the positive pin is on the left, negative (ground) is on the right.
Also note that the touchstone mechanism is not Qi compatible, so it wont work with the newer charging mats for Nokia or HTC.
And always remember to perform these mods at your own risk.

Did you install any receiver on the S4?
I didn't mean to confuse anyone, I only confirmed that it is POSSIBLE to perform the mod. I used a 4.7v DC power supply to test if the wireless charging pins on the back are live, which wasn't the case for T-mobile note 2 so I had to check to make sure.
If you already have a Qi charger, you can get one of these receivers and connect it to your phone, then you'll be able to charger with your mat
http://www.ebay.com/itm/qi-Wireless...l_Phone_PDA_Chargers&var=&hash=item51abef6de9
But I would argue that the touchstone method is superior to qi if you plan on using it in a car, as the magnets keep the phone in place is it's really convenient to connect/disconnect when you're driving.

Samsung will be officially supporting wireless charging for the S4 through accessories. The ad for the pad and back wireless charging cover is already listed on the promo S4 accessories page. http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxys4/
Though there seems to be no price or date yet.
Of course there will be 3rd party wireless charging solutions as well.

also;
can anyone confirm or deny wether or not the palm touchstone + receiver will trickle charge the GS4 after it is fully charged ? (or does it completely cease charging until the phone is physically picked up and replaced ?)

I have the photos set up and just need to put notes on them explaining what I did.
Will post them when I get home tonight (12am CT)
Ummmm, from everything I read the pins you have it hooked up to are NOT the ones for inductive charging, the gold ones on the right are......
I could be mistaken however. I remember the s3 used those pins, but I've read in a couple places that the ones made specifically for inductive charging are the ones on the right above the battery.

What ARE all the other pins back there for? I figured one set (had no idea which one) was for inductive charging, but couldn't figure a reason for the others..

the smaller set is wireless charging, the larger set is presumably for additional NFC antenna (although I measured no resistance in the circuit with my voltmeter), as the back cover seemed to have a carved out area for a NFC like the Note 2 did.
Although the S4 battery says "NFC" on it, which seems like samsung made a last minute decision to put NFC on the battery instead of the back cover... oh samsung ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nope, the NFC is in fact in the battery, the same way Samsung has been doing it for years now. They made no change.
Oh false information from people that don't know what they're talking about ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Does anyone have a line one a good Qi Car charger?

Is there a fast (qi fast) charger for the car with decent retention? I really...really need one haha
Not cheap anymore, but the Samsung one is the best I have found. I have 4 of them in my fleet. Only thing is I recommend a 90 degree down bend micro USB cable for neater appearance.

On a couple of cars, I bought the appropriate ProClip mount for the car, and then cut the arm off of the base of the charger, and JB Welded it to the Proclip mount.

Reviews says it doesn't do fast charging. Can you confirm it does on the S8?

Sorry, I cannot confirm as my S8 is still yet to arrive. I very happy with them on the S6 and S7.

When you say you're very happy with them on your S6 / S7, does that mean they fast charge them? Please confirm if it does when you're S8 arrives.

I believe both the S6 and S7 have in settings a check box to enable or disable fast charging. But does Android actually have a way of telling anyone when it is actually fast charging verses not fast charging? I never seen any messages like that. I have the other Samsung Qi charging pads - the one that is flat and the newer one that is a stand and never seen any messages indicating they fast charge. And even when I plug it in to the stock USB charger there is no indication it is fast charging. So how does one actually tell?
I bought this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JRTHAE8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It does fast charge, you get a notification when it charging.

Interesting, I bought that a while back and it didn't fast charge my Note 5 so I returned it. Plus the back doesn't support my setup so I didn't wait to test on the S8+.
Just used it last week. Gave the notification it was fast charging, and the time till full. Seemed to work great for me. Only problem I have is the vent clip doesn't work on the vents in my jeep.
That would be specific to the vehicle though

My S8 Plus arrived today. The charger I recommended above does NOT provide any messages that it is fast charging but I was not using a factory Samsung charger. I switched it to a factory Samsung charger, but still the same. The cord I have to use not factory either because the factory one is too short and I have heard sometime those can cause the fast charging not to work. Seems pretty slow charging so whatever I have setup here is not fast charging capable it seems. So YMMV.
Easiest thing s do what I did. Find a Radio Shack going out of business, get a disc style charger and a Samsung fast car charger, gut the disc, cut it down and install it somewhere under a cubby hole or console. I did it in my Mercedes, first in the cubby hole under the stereo in a single DIN arrangement, then moved it to the arm rest in the console running a cable off the cigarette lighter. Car chargers aren't easy to find for Qi, so i got inventive and made my own.
I haven't been able to find a single car charger worth a damn, including the 80 dollar samsung. I'm thinking of the charging pad mounted in my console as well. Ugh wish someone would make a decent car charger that's wireless

Like stated before, this one is fairly cheap for what it is. You get two style of mounts. If you have a jeep like me, you will probably have to use the window mount. When I used my rental last week which was a Nissan sentra the vent mount worked great.
It definitely does fast wireless charging as long as you use a compatible charge input. My radio didn't have enough output and did regular speed wireless charging. Used the cigarette charger output that came with it and tada fast wireless charging. As the pics show on my Verizon s8 plus

Any Qualcomm 2.0 adaptive fast charge works
Idk about it doing quick charge I'll check into it, but I've had this for 2 years in my car.
iOttie HLCRIO132 Easy One Touch Wireless Qi Standard Car Mount Charger for Qi Enabled Devices - Standard Packaging - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UXS7958/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_-cvczb92EXNGD
I use the iOttie Qi mount and it works well.
I got this one yesterday. How can I prove or disprove that it is truly a fast charging wireless device? Should I let my phone get down to a really low percentage (and what would that be)? I'm happy with the setup. Long micro USB cord, both dash and vent mount (I'm using the vent mount, works fine in my Sienna). Even though I've only have it a day, it did top up my phone from 92% to 100% in a 5 minute drive.
Update May 8: when I put the phone in the charger it briefly indicates on the the screen that it is Fast Charging.
I'm really satisfied with this setup.

I ordered this one today. I was looking for one that went in the vent and noticed it comes with a bracket for this. I went with the $40 3 coil version (probably over kill) but I was either paying $5 for one day prime shipping on the $30 one or pay $40 with free one day shipping for the "better" version. Figured $5 extra for the next level one wasn't going to kill me. I previously used the Scoche magnetic vent dock but it interferes with my wireless charging at home. Once I decided I needed a new dock for the car, I figured I'd go with a wireless charger to get the job done. Love that it also comes with the clips to organize the wire clutter a bit too.
