Hi,
I am considering buying a Galaxy Nexus from Google. I understand that it has limited memory 16 GB and no SD card slot. I am considering taking this phone with me on the road. (By this I mean traveling by car – as against air travel where you get a chance to use the Wi-Fi in airports.)
What is the cheapest alternative to take/transfer additional data to the GN which would be in the range of 8GB to 16GB? For e.g. one way would be to take my Windows Laptop along that would be able to transfer files to the GN via the USB or WiFi. (I believe there are a few apps to do this.) Is there any cheaper alternative than a full laptop to transfer data to the GN when I am on the road? I am ready to buy/arrange for any other accessories like Tablets that can transfer data.
I’d be grateful for any suggestions.
Thank you,
O. O.

Although I like Pirateghost's suggestion better, you could also buy a USB OTG cable and use a USB flash drive.
Any modifications to use USB OTG?

Thank you efrant So you mean something like a Micro-USB OTG Cable Would I need any major modifications with the stock firmware to get this to work? (Plain rooting is OK for me.)
Thanks again efrant

All you need is root and Chainfire's StickMount app.
Make sure you get a cable that is compatible with the GNex. Think I bought mine off eBay for $6.

Hi,
I bought a cheap USB OTG cable (£2), which was supposed to work on the Galaxy Nexus, but doesn't seem to.
I will probably buy another one anyway (any recommendations which one I should buy, and where), but I just wondered if there was anyway I could modify the one I have to work with a USB drive?
Cheers
Stewart
ebay seller iTrimming sells a working OTG host cable for GNex.

Sorry, should have said before. I have tried StickMount - no go! The stick doesn't even light up when connected.
And I would prefer a UK seller! Thanks though!!
Ordered one from iTrimming!
Hopefully should work ok!
Hey, I have searched a bit for an answer here but can anyone actually tell me if I can get a larger SD card or more gigabytes for storage on my Samsung galaxy nexus??
Cheers

No. Only way to get more space is using a kernel which supports USB hosted storage.
It is too risky trying to change the memory chip (i imagine soldering is needed) already installed in your phone.

For any OS but Windows, that would be good, but Windows does support the MTP mode of the Galaxy Nexus.
OK. Bummer
I'll just have to deal with it then. Something to definatly look out for on my next phone phone

What I'm planning on doing is this:
I've ordered one of these: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/USB-Host-Ada...s=63&clkid=7945018501273467967#ht_1590wt_1067
Hoping it works on the G Nex, I think it should.
And then I'm getting one of these: http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10425
Gonna basically have a little microUSB flash drive. I'm just gonna plug the moskeyto into my computer every now and then to sync, but I think it's the best solution for being able to carry larger files I want to use on my phone.
I'm not sure its gonna work yet. Gonna test my existing drive with the host adapter before buying the new drive, but for $2, its worth giving it a shot.

Another option if you've got a microsd card laying around from a previous phone (like I do) is to get that same OTG cable and a mini microsd reader like http://www.amazon.com/ELAGO-Mobile-Reader-World-Smallest-EL-RD-012/dp/B002K7EJDK
Now suddenly that 16GB microsd isn't as useless as it was although you'd still have to put up with the terribad transfer speed.
Speaking of which, do they publish the Moskeyto's read/write xfer speed? I mean you know, it doesn't actually matter on the device (as long as its fast enough to stream a 720p video without any issues) but it does matter when you're just trying to get some data on it from your PC .
On a related note re: storage space, I got Google Play Music working 2 nights ago and I must say that I'm impressed at how seamless it works. It's also nice having my entire active-music library, has also meant that I can trim my "offline" sync playlist even more to save more space. This space saving method, of course, does mean you gotta have a decent data plan if you wanna stream and drive.
Cheers everyone. At least I have a couple options now.

I bought a Galaxy s3 USB OTG cable (Female USB A to Micro USB Male) and it does not recognize anything that I plug into it. Does anyone know if the USB Host functionality has been removed from the Sprint version of this phone? I want to know before I just assume that it's a defective cable.
I used USB OTG for everything on both Stock and Cyanogenmod. I think you have a defective cable. One of the main features is actually OTG support.
I think your best bet is getting this cable since it's $0.67 with free shipping and it pretty much works for everyone.
Just played a game with Xbox controller and OTG and it was really cool. Hopefully you'll be able to share my experience.

Are you using a Sprint Galaxy S3? I ask because it seemed that the OTG feature was disabled in the Galaxy S2, so I wasn't sure if Sprint would also disable it in the Galaxy S3. From my searching on-line, it seems that those using the T-Mobile and AT&T Galaxy S3 variants are able to connect with USB OTG. For 68 cents, I might as well try ordering another one.

Yeah, Sprint. It worked on stock and on custom ROMs. I use the exact same cable and it works 100%.
Did they have a reason to disable it on the SGS2? I'm wondering why on earth they'd do that.

Not sure why they disabled it because it seems pretty illogical to do that. I ordered the cable, and hopefully in a month I'll be able to see if it ends up working. I'm hoping that it's a problem with the cable and not a problem with my phone.
I was able to get FAT32 thumb drives and my Canon camera to work. USB keyboards and mice did not. NTFS drives did not work either, even though I used a mounting app that makes it work on my tablet.
It won't arrive for a little bit (1saleaday is slow to ship), so I figure I'll ask some questions in the meantime.
Does it support MHL 2.0? I've seen conflicting info, in that some places don't even mention MHL support. And if it's not 2.0, does it require that specific 11-pin Samsung adapter? Selling my HTC One and not sure if I should just include my current 5-pin adapter with it.
Does it work with the Smart Dock like the regular S4 and whatnot? Assuming it works with MHL 2.0, I don't see why it wouldn't work with the Smart Dock.
What kind of sound hardware does it have? I don't suppose its Wolfson...
Does it support exFAT for microSD? I've seen confirmation that it supports 64GB cards at least.
And any idea if it'll have a wireless charging back like for the S4? Don't know if it even supports wireless charging.
I've tried mhl 1.0 and 2.0. Both don't work. Also tried USB OTG also doesn't work.
I have a 64gb micro sd but I can't remember how it's formatted. But definitely works.

Well crap, I was banking on at least regular MHL - are you sure its not the cable you're using (as in, it requires the Samsung specific 11-pin cable)? If not, then I guess GSMarena is wrong (wouldn't be the first time).
I've tried both a cheap one from ebay and the samsung geniune one which works with my normal Galaxy S4 without using the power cable......both cable works on my normal GS4 but it doesn't work on my MIni GS4....i've also tried with or without the power cable attached and still doesn't work.

only the samsung hdmi adapter works with the GS4 mini due to a specific protocol since it is not HML enabled. I know... it sucks, but it has other ways to connect to a TV

samsung smart TVs have this almost-like "wifi-direct" connection and you can mirror through wifi the phone's display. like sony has with their phones&TVs. you need to be connected to the same wifi... that's it

Since the new model tablet does not have the 30-pin charging port, does anyone know if they are developing a mini USB charging adapter that can accommodate a full size USB pen drive, stick, etc...
With the understanding this tablet is new and not very many people have it yet, I thought I would put that question out there, thoughts?

Now all you need is for the tablet to have OTG support. For some reason this is always a big question mark.
I have a USB OTG cable and have used it often with my Galaxy Nexus, but depending on the ROM I had to install an app (that needs root - by chainfire I believe) for it to work. So I wouldn't be too surprised if USB OTG didn't work out of the box.

Maybe this works better on non-AOSP devices. As far as I know, Samsung also has their own Bluetooth drivers too, for example. Maybe this is a similar situation, I don't really know. I've never owned a non-Nexus device, I'm sure someone else with more experience with Samsung devices can clarify this for us.
I tested USB storage and it's working .. but maybe selective
Tried 5 sticks .. 4 worked except a Sony thumb drive gave USB is blank and it's led only blinked for a second.
Also noticed that processor got hot quickly.. as it opened the file explorer or maybe it's the media server and indexing
I've used the otg cable with a mouse successfully

External HDD
Hi.
Has anyone tried external hard drives, do you recognize?
Thank you!
i've tried 4 different portable hd's from 320 to 1.5TB. it recongizes the device and spins them up, but they're all ntfs. i can't even get paragon to mount them. i also tried my hacked powered usb otg (made it for rooting the chromecast) and still the same results. if we can get a kernel with ntfs support it should work fine.

I have a motorola otg cable that does NOT work on my note. However I have this OTG cable (minus the 11 pin adapter--I bought it in 2012) which DOES work.

Hello there,
I have another question regarding these OTG cable/hub solutions.. are there any ways to connect an USB device and simultaneously charge your tablet?
like for example an usb game-controller and be able to play games while charging (or watching movies from a (compatible) hard disc while charging)
Thanks for any answers!
