Are you rooted? If you took the OTA from EL29 you are no longer and that is a problem.

It was a manual update to FF18 from EL 29 I think that it is still rooted because I have super user but you may be right. I might have lost root even though it says I have superuser installed.

Clear the settings etc out of superuser and see if mobile odin asks for su privelages if it does then you should have root. dl a root checker or use another app you know needs root. Haven't been without root in a long time but superuser should even say something if you try to run it.

If you try to update binaries from SuperUser, ot would tell you permission failed. SuperUser is just an app, root access would have been lost when installing OTA.
Just run a rooted one click and youll be back to rooted in no time. they already found no diff between ota and ff18 leak.

Root without a computer?

I know it's possible to root *some* phones without a computer. Does anyone know if it's possible with the Hercules?
No! You need a computer

Thanks
I think you can not root without a computer (because of all the ODIN stuff), but I guess ROMs can be installed using ROM manager. But using clockworkmod recovery seems easier.
You can't root without PC. Odin is the only way, my adhd girl can do this!

Rooting without a computer is the DUMBEST idea in the entire world. IF you screw up your phone, like most n00bs these days do, you will have NO WAY to recover your device without sending it in... not to mention no way to read XDA to discover what went wrong.

No need to install CWM from PC.
For this method you have to download 2 files (CWM.zip & SU-Busybox-Installer.zip) to you phone and you are ready to go.
Check method 1 on this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794

Yeah thats right, even you can get a horse without PC. There is app called mobile odin which makes this possible. You can flash firmware with cwm using that, mobile odin requires rooted phone, which we did using prev posts.
I have su access with cwm installed on my phone without imcrease in flash counter and yellow exclaimation at boot.
I am planning to install good rom on this. Once I do it successfully I will try to put small tut on it.

Isn't half the point of the ROM Manager app to install a custom recovery? If you have root access, you can flash CWM through it. It's literally the first action listed when you open it.

Rooting after OTA Update?

I'm a real noob at this but read up as much as I can.
I rooted my T-mo GS3 using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735561
with CWM.
Now I want to have the update. I'm assuming I can unroot my phone and then do the OTA update, but what methods are available to root the phone after the OTA update? My wife also has one of these phones, and has already done the OTA, but hasn't rooted her phone yet, so I really need this info for both phones. Could I use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687 to root both our phones? Do I need to unroot and reset the flash counter on my rooted phone before doing that? Does that update included the latest radio update for these phones?
Thanks!
I'm in the same situation as you. And, this is the first time I root my phone.
I read a lot on the forum but it's kind of confuse me.

I'm not sure. It might work or not maybe even thru Kies. Just depends cuz some were able to update last ota with no problems. I know that if you have custom recovery the OTA will fail unless you have stock recovery with root and use voodoo root keeper to try and keep root. The easiest way will be Odin back to stock and apply jb ota once released then root it back once someone confirms a method or wait till a dev releases a full rom.

You mentioned a radio 'fix'. But its not a fix that I am aware of. Just an update. As long as you update via odin or kies with the official ota or firmware you will get the FULL update. This means other partitions will receive patches as well. If you update only by flashing a rooted rom using cwm or twrp you will NOT get the updates to the other partitions, including the radio. (You can flash the radio separately of course but would still not get the updates to other partitions).
You can preserve root using the ota rootkeeper, or after updating, reroot using another method.
My recommendation is to update via kies or odin with official firmware and then reroot. (Using ota rootkeeper is up to you).
Hope this helps clear some things up a little for you guys.

[Q] JB Update Fails.

So I was happy to read the Tmo GS3 finally getting JB and even happier when my phone pulled it.
However I cannot get it to install.
I'm full stock ROM. I did root via "debugfs-based Root for Galaxy S III"
The first time it failed I remembered I had programs frozen.
Unfroze them, still failed.
So I uninstalled my SuperUser app and told it to remove root.
Both Root Checker and Titanium Backup show no root access.
Update still fails.
Am I missing a step here? Or am I looking at resetting the phone to update it?

You are rooted so im assuming you want to stay that way correct?
Go to the firmware thread in my sig and towards the top of the op you will see a section called root66.
Download the latest root66 firmware. Extract the file using 7zip, it should be a .tar.md5 file.
You will use Odin to flash this. If you arennt familiar with Odin, go to the 2nd post to download the latest vrrsion, 3.07. Below that you will find instructions for many different methods, find the flash in Odin one and follow the steps.
The root66 firmware is identical to the stock released by T-Mobile, except it comes pre-rooted, so you wont have to worry bout it after!
Good luck whichever way you go!

Op of that thread will tell you to do exactly what I just did a post or so ago. Just sayin that you should update your firmware before flashing custom roms.
Not required, but recommended for running the jb roms. Otherwise you dont get the full update.
Firmware via odin will update 10 partitions, custom roms only 2-3 on average.

How can I update my phone using Odin?

Hey there, I have a rooted S3 (rooted with Snapdragon toolkit) and I have not updated my phone since I've gotten it. Is there a way for me to update my phone using Odin without having to unroot my phone first? If so, where can I download the updates for the Wind Mobile version of the S3? Also, If I update my phone using Odin, will it wipe all data from the phone?
Thanks for any help.
Go here, download the root66 jellybean rom for you carrier and flash it with desktop Odin. You will keep root, apps, settings, everything. These have superSU, yours probably has superuser so you will end up with both. Just open superSU, it will ask you to update the binary and it will take over. Then you can just disable or install superuser if you wish.

Hello,
I too had root, CWM recovery and stock ROM on my note 2 and was able to successfully take the OTA update to 4.1.2 and retain root access. I obviously have a stock recovery now after the upgrade but root is still present! I did have SuperSU (paid for version) that has the Survive OTA update mode and it worked like a charm! One thing to note is that it was not obvious at first that root was retained.
Immediately after the update, my root access failed when trying to use Titanium backup. Also, other apps requiring root access were failing as well. So, I went into SuperSU and ticked the "enable Super User" mode off and then on again and rebooted the phone.
After the reboot I noticed that Titanium Backup had root access and then verified the rest of my apps were working as well.
Three cheers to the creators of these wonderful programs.....I'm very glad I paid for the updates and got the added functionality!!
Good luck to all and hopefully it works as well for you as it did for me!!
