I was wondering, if I have CM 9 installed can I download the nightlies (If I wanted to try them) and install them on my Samsung EG4 touch?
i want to leave this planet.
if you have installed cm9 correctly you should just be able to flash the nightly over your stock cm9, that is if you have a NOT stock recovery. I know from experience that it will work on the safe CWM that agat and chris41g have put together.
http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/cm9-install-guide.html
go to the bottom where it says upgrades. and read that. just to be safe.
hope this helps

Hi i just wanted to know the easiest way to install a new rom on my defy. I have cm7 currently installed. Let me get this straight everytime you want to install a new rom you have to use rsd lite you cant just install zip from sd card through recovery? seems like a long process not really worth going through just to test a few roms? is this right or is there an easier way? thanks
If the base OS required is the same (meaning the new ROM works on the same kernel) then you can simply switch ROM's via Custom Recovery (CWM), but you have to wipe data and cache to avoid bootloops or other unexpected errors. If anything goes wrong and you mess up the bootmenu or the CWM module then you must flash the SBF again. I've successfully switched between CM7 and MIUI without flashing again the Froyo CEE.
Thanks that clears up a little bit, but how do i know if a rom uses the same kernel?

You welcome! Generally the ROM dev's mentions which base ROM should be used, if not you always can ask or read others comments, if any.
Ok cool thanks im with it now. Do u know which rom cm7 rc 1 is based on?

If I'm not wrong the latest nightly builds are based on Froyo CEE or SEA. If you install RC1v2 or one nightly with BOOTXXX on it then it will upgrade also your kernel so you don't have to worry. See more details on CM7 topic.
I'm sorry, Im confused. I have been searching and I have read 3 seemingly contradictory facts:
- NEVER flash CM9 with any other recovery other than clockwork mod
- NEVER use odin to flash clockwork mod on an ICS rom
- You can flash a newer version of CM9 over the old one
So i'm using CM9 RC0 and I would like to update to alpha2 without wiping. CWM disappeared when i flashed and I keep reading that its dangerous to use the stock rouge recovery. So I went to go use odin to get CWM back on but there is a warning to never try to load it using an ICS rom?
Where am I going wrong here? I really dont want to wipe and flash to a GB rom just so that I can use odin to get CWM and flash back to cm9.
Thanks, I just wanted to make sure i didn't ruin my phone!

What you want to do is flash the EL26 kernel with CWM through Odin. Once it's flashed and the phone starts to reboot, pull the battery. Put the battery back in, boot into recovery via Vol up+ power and then flash Alpha 2 over RC0, flash GApps and reboot. You should be good to go then.

If you haven't already, I believe the OP has updated the steps fairly well here:
How Not to Brick Your E4GT
Flashing roms on Epic4gtouch is so complicated. I remember when I had my HTC hero. All you gotta do is download the rom, put it in your sdcard, open rom manager then flash xD

This is a recent thing that started when the ICS leaks started coming. Before ICS, rooting and flashing this phone was as easy as any. It still is actually, but you have to be more careful, especially with any of the AOSP ROMs. It should be back to normal once the official ICS update is released and we get our hands on the source code.

Worked perfectly! Hopefully you have helped many noobs down the road when they search for this. What threw me off was QBKings video when he kept warning to never flash EL26 on ICS. (Mad respect though, QBKing!). Thanks for clearing that up for me!
On a side note, yeah, things seem complicated. I know there is a good reason why CM9 doesn't include a good recovery but I hope as things develop we will eventually get back to the "Rom Manager" days. Man, our devs spoil us!
Koush's Recovery builder is now building CWM Recovery v6.0.0.0, the recovery is already included in the latest nightly of CM9. My question is how to get this to people that aren't using cm9, or make a permanent one that can be downloaded and flashed or odined separate from any roms. There is a build made for epicmtd at http://jenkins.cyanogenmod.com/job/recovery/1585/ you can download the recovery.img file from there, but I was hoping to make a flashable zip or something from it. The builder is pretty sweet, can also build a touch version. I understand I already have it on my phone because I used the latest cm9 nightly, but does that actually replace the older CWM, or just add another one that resides inside the kernel... if I'm not mistaken in the past I ended up with 2 versions of CWM on my phone, one that was odined in and permanent, and another that was actually a part of cm9. I also was going to build the touch version to check out but I didn't and will hold off until I hear back from people on this thread.
the CM team had a temp boot CWM Touch available some months back. They said there was an issue with flashing it permanent, and hadn't heard or seen any update for it since then (think this was march or april)
I'd love to see a fully working CWM Touch for our Epics.
Ok so i flash cm9 already to my epic 4g touch. well i had for to also flash the gapps for the ROM. So i try to go back into clockwork mod but it goes into the stock recovery why does this happen? And can someone help me with getting it permently installed on the phone?
Which version of CM9 did you flash? CM9 Alpha6 and all nightlies after come with chris41gs safe CWM recovery.

Im running alpha4
Also if i want to change the rom i have to reinstall cwm
Alpha 4 came with stock recovery. If you want to update to alpha6 or the latest nightly, odin the el26 cwm kernel and flash rom+gapps from there. Those come with CWM recovery that is safe to flash/restore/backup in.
Back around may i flashed my gf's gs2 to ics akop and it was an ordeal with odin and recovery and whatnot. At the time my friend had one too and helped walk me through it, but hes moved onto the gs3. Im used to htcs where i just need to flash a recovery and rom and im good to go, and i see some talk of safe recovery so it looks like things have gotten better. Shes having all kinds of problems with this akop build and id like to get her on something new, hopefully something cm10 based, but have no idea what all that entails. It looks like her kernel is fe07, if someone could let me know what i need to do to get her on a better rom id greatly appreciate it
Us in mobile Odin or desktop Odin to flash a kernel. I would highly recommend el26+cwm5 its a kernel with recovery built in because that's how our phone does the recovery. After you have el26 kernel installed it won't boot. Its OK. This just means you have an ics rom trying to use a gb kernel. Just push and hold both the power button and volume up until you get in recovery. This is the safest kernel to flash from. Then once in recovery go ahead and flash your cm10.
Things you will need.
1. el26kernel with cwm5.
2. Rom you want to flash.
3. Either mobile Odin by chain fire or desktop Odin with drivers already installed.
4. Calkulins format all.zip is highly recommended to use so you don't have traces of hour last rom messing things up.

Thanks for the detail. So with having a gb kernel whats going to allow it to boot once i install cm10? Once cm is installed, do i have to go through that whole process again to flash another rom if i want?

Cm10 should have a safe recovery, but you can if you want to be doubly sure. When you install cm it will have the jb kernel with it so all you have to do is rom gapps and boot. Highly recommend mobile Odin for going to el26 recovery because it makes it soo much faster and easier.
When you flash a rom from that el26 kernel, it will be overwritten. The kernel is packed into the rom. So by flashing cm10 you will now have a new kernel.
