Lost my WiMAX RSA key - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

TL;DR - There IS a WiMAX RSA key somewhere on our device and it CAN be lost. It would be great if we could track it down and figure out how to back it up.
Here's the story. I had to send my E4GT in to Samsung for a new logic board, and about a week after I got it back, WiMAX stopped working. I discovered that my WiMAX MAC address had reset to 00:00:00:00:00:00, and all the other settings (MRU, REALM, etc) had been cleared, as well. I was able to reprogram the MAC address to the one on the sticker, and the other settings to match my NS4G. I still couldn't connect, so I did a ##786# reset, and re-activated; still no go. I was getting desperate, so I called Sprint. The support agent didn't know jack about WiMAX, but she updated my profile, still no-go. I called Samsung, too, but they claimed there was not way the repair process could have affected my WiMAX. I have used the WimaxLineTest application to verify that Authentication fails, so I have to believe that there is an authentication RSA key somewhere in flash, which was lost when my WiMAX settings got reset.
I'm not looking for a solution to my problem, as my local Sprint store is getting me a replacement. I do think that it would benefit the community, though, if we could figure out where the RSA key is stored so we can find a way to back it up. Thoughts?

Network connection works once than lost (after each restart)

The title pretty much says it all. I tried searching and didnt find a matching issue....I have a Tilt2 (ATT) stock rom.
Yesterday I had issues with hotmail via Windows Live. I would log in and the folders/mail would sync fine. The very next action I took using data would fail (sending an email, another sync/send/receive, using IE-Opera, facebook). The action/request would timeout with a "no network connection".
Most of the time I can access the web/mail by recycling the power. But as before, it quickly loses the connection again.
I spent over an hour with support and tech yesterday. No answers or ideas, just a suggestion I have the device switched out with the ''warranty" dept (which would make it my 5th Tilt2!!!!).
I'm actually waiting to see what android phones come out. I love the keyboard, but dont want to install a custom rom for fear of voiding the warranty and have way too many issues. In the meantime, any ideas on my network issue would be most appreciated.
bump.....
No ideas at all???
Try a FULL HARD RESET.
To perform a hard reset
Access the Settings Tab>All Settings>System>Clear Storage
Follow the onscreen instructions.
OR I believe it's pressing the SEND/END key + Holding down the POWER button and hitting the reset hole should do it. Then VOLUME UP button when asked 'are yo sure' --or something like that.
Let the PHONE install whatever it needs. Once stable, try setting up 1 email account and see what happens.

NOT ANOTHER WIMAX THREAD.... riiight

Long time reader, first time poster...
Prologue,
I appreciate all the great info on the site and have visited the same threads so many times, my google chrome shortcut windows are all xda pages
My first evo was purchased the second day available to public and i initially took the plunge into the world of dev and rooting because I wanted free wifi tethering.... let me say... its a slippery slope
Anyway, I cooked my wimax keys and oemMAC a loooong time ago on my evo.
Tried everything, fastboot mac fix, stock rom with su_radio, HTC SPRINT RUU, blah blah blah.
I did fix the turn on/searching/failed/turn off/turn on loop and corrected my MAC but RSA keys were toast
Followed ALL threads to no avail... I do not have access to another EVO so I finally bit the bullet and took it to the sprint store and got a free replacement (took 4 days).
SO, here I am with a new (refurb) evo that is 100% stock and working. I did a logcat to check out what was going on with a working 4g and when I turned off the radio, I keep getting this:
( 102): <DC> Try to establish a connection to DC server.
E/Wimax ( 102): <DC CONNECT> IO error: msg='/127.0.0.1:7771 - Connection refu
sed'
It just repeats, and repeats and repeats... Even though the 4gradio is off. The message didnt show up in the logcat until I turned the 4g radio on and then off.
Yes, I know... it has been discussed before but the "problem" was being reported by members with non-stock phones...
OFF TOPIC, but still seeking guidance:
Also, I want to get back on the root-train and want to make sure I dont have the 4g rsa key problems. Where do I start to make sure I can backup my wimax part?
This has been discussed and the verdict is: This is normal behavior, maybe not wanted, but normal on these phones; and does not negatively impact battery life. Carry on.

Amon_RA 1.8.0 Nandroid backs up your WIMAX partition
^that being said... maybe you could make this a sticky:
IF YOUR RSA KEYS ARE GONE... GET A NEW PHONE, fixing MAC does nothing...
(assuming you dont have access to another Evo)
....would have saved myself about 2 weeks of screwing around

I have read about the Amon_RA method and it doesn't say anything specifically about the wimax backup partition. Do you have to do anything special for the wimax backup or is it a "bonus" feature?

It does it automatically, but just beware if you ever have to get a replacement phone and want to restore your backup. You will have to delete the Wimax.img and edit the md5 file or it will overwrite your brand new partition with one from your old phone.
long time reader doesn't already know this??

is there anyway to see if you still have your rsa keys if you have NEVER connected to wimax? i do not live in a 4g area but if i visit one, or if it finally comes to me, i would like it to work. also, if i ever find out my wimax actually doesnt work, could i just take it in and get it replaced assuming it unroot properly?
Go into shell and type
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
This is what mine said with broken keys:
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024

ReRSA
RSA requests
RSA replies
Check your keys, if they are there and your MAC matches, you should be good to go.

Run the command like the op posted. You should see something like -----BEGIN RSA KEY----- or something similar if you still have your keys.
I also found another thread around here which has a command that you can use to backup your wimax partition. You can do that and save it in a safe place (or nandroid using anon ra recovery). That partition contains your keys as well. I backed it up, opened it in a hex editor and saw those keys in there.
Sorry I can't post the link, the xda app doesn't let me save draft so I couldn't search for that other thread while typing this. The title of that head says "fix your broken 4g here" or something of that sort.

Transferring 4G Wimax key from one Evo to another

I recently discovered that my RSA Keys are gone (used the app from the Market for confirmation). A little while ago, I lost my Evo, I got a replacement, and the lost unit was found and returned to me later. It supposedly is blocked from going back on the network, so I'm not going to try and put it back on my account, but I checked last night and 4G connected w/out a problem. So I'm wondering if I could Amon-Ra Nandroid the phone w/the keys, and restore that to the new phone w/out the keys? Does it seem at all plausible, or is there a simpler way to transfer the keys from one unit to the other? I've been reading a lot of the 4G threads, and it seems like it is a possibility, I'm just unsure as to how exactly I should proceed w/out horking things up more.
Is it a possibility to make backups of the keys as per step 6a of this thread, edit the MAC and transfer them over? TIA for any guidance.
take the wimax.img from the phone with the good keys (bad esn) and put it on the sdcard of the phone with the bad keys (good esn) and then in the good phone open a terminal emulator and type su then type flash_image wimax /sdcard/wimax.img
feel free to make a backup of the bad wimax partition first just to be safe
A lot of what I read indicates that the keys are specific to the MAC address. Is this correct?

Ok, I can't say one way or the other if you can trade out your RSA keys between phones, but I wanted to tell you that sprint can unblock or unrestrict your old phone if you request them to. I lost my phone a few months ago and had to make a claim, I went through the whole process from the police report to getting my new replacement. The phone was blocked from the network a few weeks after I got the new phone - I found the old one, I called sprint and the police to let them know I had found the phone. Sprint asked me if I wanted the lock taken off it and now its the phone my sister has...works just fine, so if they tell you they cant remove the lock - tell the Rep you want to speak to a manager... now, there MAY be a limit on the days for the phone to be found before the lock becomes permanent i.e if the lock isnt lifted in 30 days or 60 days it becomes perm... but i found my phone in 3 weeks...
My understanding is you can't use another phones keys. I don't have any experience first hand, but there was a thread about this a couple days ago and everyone said the keys are phone specific and there is no way to switch.
+1
I lost my keys and researched for days. Wimax keys are non-transferable :/

Well, I did manage to use the aforementioned method from post #2 and got the key transferred. The WiMAX RSA Key Checker now says that the RSA key is present, so that's good. I've been researching this issue for the past couples days, there's a lot of info to process.
Edit: In the interim, I checked out this thread. I ran "fastboot oem wimaxrmac" and it didn't error out, it shows the IP address from the donor phone. It appears that the issue for everyone is that yes, the key is specific to the MAC, so the fact that the recipient phone is showing both MAC and key from the donor makes me think this might work after all.
Well, I can confirm that this method works. I am able to connect and sustain connection on 4G.
The RSA keys, mac address, username and password are all stored in the wimax image. So transferring it from one phone to another should work.
Good job, I think a lot of people will be interested in hearing about that
So a little off topic. I would like to use my laptops wimax proset 6250 to connect as its antenna seems to pickup better than the evo. Anyway to extract the keys and password so I can try to set them in as replacements for the ones in my laptop?
EVO Sent
is your proset rooted?
Sweet, I'm gonna sell a copy of my wimax image to someone who needs some RSA keys lol, I don't use 4G anyway haha

[Q] Lost data, then lost voice after loading factory image!

HELP! My 1x data quite working (Pageplus), verified that my radio settings seemed ok, but still no data. I then do a Factory reset with Odin (SPH-L710_SPR_L710VPBLJ7_L710SPRLJ7_Original) and now it looks like I lost a link to my account... When I go to call out, it says there isn't enough funds on the account, even though I have a monthly plan an nowhere near any limits).
Please help and give me some sort of direction, I've been fighting the data for the last couple days and now with voice not working, it's pretty much useless... :crying:
Connect to Wi-Fi and force hands free activation from the dialer by putting in "##72786#"
After entering the code, the phone rebooted and ran an activation. The activation keeps failing with error code 4 (Client Authentication Error)
Personally, I think something with the radio config may have gotten corrupt or something. Seems to odd with how 1x was working fine, then all data quit. I have no idea how to wipe/reset that data or if there is anything critical I need before doing so (don't want to brick the device or make my life getting this phone to work a LOT worse...)

I'd say go back to stock unrooted and call Sprint. Maybe something got messed up on their end as forecasted by the "client authentication" error

[Q] Page Plus Data?

While back I successfully flashed this phone to Page Plus, along with a verizon PRL and it works like a charm talk and text but I get no data or MMS. What should I do to get data? Is it as simple as getting a verizon APN or do I need to do some wacky stuff?

That depends on how comfortable you are with QPST or DFS and whether you have a budget you are willing to spend to get the phone up and running. There is another thread running in this forum attempting to get 3g on Pageplus flashing an NV file, but there seems to be a number of issues that are still being worked out. Besides that, I know of two options for getting data:
1. Simplest method (and now the only one I ever use because, heck, it's freakin easy) - get Wireless Workshop. You can fully flash phones over to $10/phone and it does all the work for you. It gets mms up and running, does some kind of dmu calculation to allow you to run data at 3g speeds, and it's almost entirely automatic. Downside: you pay $10/flash and you have to buy credit in $50 chunks.
2. QPST 2.7/ DFS method (I was able to get mms and 1g data running) - I can't help you to find QPST, but a google search will get you there quickly enough or you can go with DFS, which you can download for free from their website.
It's been a while since I've flashed my LGOG (I think it was in February or March), so here is hopefully everything you need. Also, if you already know all this, my apologies. Some people seem to be having issues with getting the values to stick and if that's you, then I don't know what to tell you apart from going for Wireless Workshop. But your post sounded like you might not be in that camp, so here goes:
*You have to be on stock based rom (I usually use Lifeless or NextOG, just because those are already on my phone, but any should work just fine)
*Make sure phone is in DIAG mode - Dial ##DIAG#, then enable or yes or DIAG or whatever the option is
*Open QPST/DFS, plug in phone, and open the port in the program that shows your phone.
*In DFS you want to send the SPC, click on the PROGRAMMING tab, then edit the DATA and MOBILE IP tabs
- Enter [email protected] (#########@vzw3g.com) for the UID and NAI (technically I think the NAI should be [email protected] or something like that, but I've never found it to affect my ability to get 1g of data)
- Enter vzw for the password and shared secret values
* I don't remember which profile (0, 1, or 2) you need have as default. I think I just filled in all three and set 0 to default and it worked, but you may have to dink about for a bit if it doesn't work.
* The settings are similar in QPST, but with more tabs within tabs to fill in all the information.
That ought to get you data, and then you just need to change the mms settings.
*Dial ##DATA#, find the option for mms, click on it and choose to edit, enter SPC, change the value to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms, set the port and proxy to nothing (this part was tricky for my phone to get it to change - I ended up switching it to 80, restarting the phone, and then changing it to nothing)
- the phone will restart and you'll be all set. If you have trouble sending or receiving mms, you can also search for wwmsgs.apk or pageplusmms.apk (though I prefer wwmsgs.apk because it looks like the AOSP messaging app)
Hopefully that helps, and hopefully I haven't forgotten anything essential. If I have, I'll try to help you get it sorted out.
+1 for wireless workshop. I flashed 2 OG's and it couldn't have been easier. I get true 3g speeds (2+Mbs), and everything else works.

I gave it a go with DFS, it tells me error code 89 cannot establish a data connection. then it keeps bootlooping back to the boot animation until i disable data
Edit: when i reconnect to dfs some settings have returned to their sprint settings. argh. I wish WW would just let me pay the 10 bucks for one flash.

I've been trying to rack my brain for what I did to make the settings stick, but I can't seem to remember. At one point I got that message as well, but I think between using QPST and DFS the settings eventually stayed. You could try changing some of the values by dialing ##DATA# and editing them there. I did that a few times on my wife's phone and it seemed to work ok (though the mms settings were quirky).
I have two friends coming over to Page Plus, so I'll be reactivating my Wireless Workshop account for them. I was planning to do the $50 and do $10 per flash, but it seems like there are a number of people here who would like to make the switch to Page Plus and get data. If I can figure out a way to allow others to chip in, we could all go for the unlimited license and get everyone flashed over with full 3g. The unlimited is good for 1 month and costs $75. I already have $20 of that coming my way from my two friends, so we would just need 5 or 6 more people who are interested and a way to make it happen (perhaps using teamviewer to flash them wirelessly?). I would feel hesitant about giving out my username and password, since my address and payment info are all on the account. Plus I think they limit it to one computer. But if I get it on mine, I could connect via Teamviewer to anyone interested. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.
What do you/anyone else think?
I have some time coming up this weekend, so that would be ideal.

Just thought of a way we could do the money. Google Wallet just setup an easy way to send money to someone's Wallet account through gmail. That could be an option. We would have to keep the amount I received under $55, since I'll be getting $20 from my friends and Teamviewer is only free if it's for private use, not for commercial use. I would want to keep this at fellow LGOG users helping each other out.
