NOT ANOTHER WIMAX THREAD.... riiight - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long time reader, first time poster...
Prologue,
I appreciate all the great info on the site and have visited the same threads so many times, my google chrome shortcut windows are all xda pages
My first evo was purchased the second day available to public and i initially took the plunge into the world of dev and rooting because I wanted free wifi tethering.... let me say... its a slippery slope
Anyway, I cooked my wimax keys and oemMAC a loooong time ago on my evo.
Tried everything, fastboot mac fix, stock rom with su_radio, HTC SPRINT RUU, blah blah blah.
I did fix the turn on/searching/failed/turn off/turn on loop and corrected my MAC but RSA keys were toast
Followed ALL threads to no avail... I do not have access to another EVO so I finally bit the bullet and took it to the sprint store and got a free replacement (took 4 days).
SO, here I am with a new (refurb) evo that is 100% stock and working. I did a logcat to check out what was going on with a working 4g and when I turned off the radio, I keep getting this:
( 102): <DC> Try to establish a connection to DC server.
E/Wimax ( 102): <DC CONNECT> IO error: msg='/127.0.0.1:7771 - Connection refu
sed'
It just repeats, and repeats and repeats... Even though the 4gradio is off. The message didnt show up in the logcat until I turned the 4g radio on and then off.
Yes, I know... it has been discussed before but the "problem" was being reported by members with non-stock phones...
OFF TOPIC, but still seeking guidance:
Also, I want to get back on the root-train and want to make sure I dont have the 4g rsa key problems. Where do I start to make sure I can backup my wimax part?

This has been discussed and the verdict is: This is normal behavior, maybe not wanted, but normal on these phones; and does not negatively impact battery life. Carry on.

Amon_RA 1.8.0 Nandroid backs up your WIMAX partition

^that being said... maybe you could make this a sticky:
IF YOUR RSA KEYS ARE GONE... GET A NEW PHONE, fixing MAC does nothing...
(assuming you dont have access to another Evo)
....would have saved myself about 2 weeks of screwing around

I have read about the Amon_RA method and it doesn't say anything specifically about the wimax backup partition. Do you have to do anything special for the wimax backup or is it a "bonus" feature?

It does it automatically, but just beware if you ever have to get a replacement phone and want to restore your backup. You will have to delete the Wimax.img and edit the md5 file or it will overwrite your brand new partition with one from your old phone.

long time reader doesn't already know this??

is there anyway to see if you still have your rsa keys if you have NEVER connected to wimax? i do not live in a 4g area but if i visit one, or if it finally comes to me, i would like it to work. also, if i ever find out my wimax actually doesnt work, could i just take it in and get it replaced assuming it unroot properly?

Go into shell and type
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
This is what mine said with broken keys:
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA
ReRSA
RSA requests
RSA replies

Check your keys, if they are there and your MAC matches, you should be good to go.

Run the command like the op posted. You should see something like -----BEGIN RSA KEY----- or something similar if you still have your keys.
I also found another thread around here which has a command that you can use to backup your wimax partition. You can do that and save it in a safe place (or nandroid using anon ra recovery). That partition contains your keys as well. I backed it up, opened it in a hex editor and saw those keys in there.
Sorry I can't post the link, the xda app doesn't let me save draft so I couldn't search for that other thread while typing this. The title of that head says "fix your broken 4g here" or something of that sort.

4G broken? Is this a viable solution?

Ok, so I have been reading around regarding the 4G issues and noticing that mine is most likely hosed.
When doing a "grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0" I get the following output:
$ su
# grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA
ReRSA
RSA requests
RSA replies
-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----#
And that is all. Now I am pretty sure I am missing my RSA keys. My question is that I have a broken EVO I bought from a friend that is in bad shape, but still stock. Am I able to copy over that phones certs since its not activated to replace mine? Or am I pretty much still SOL? Thanks in advanced.

Looks like you have your keys. If you didn't, you wouldn't have the private part there at the bottom. It won't actually show you they keys, and you need a hex editor to move them, but that is something you don't need to worry about. Lucky you.
Check your /data/misc/wimax folder for a file that starts with a bunch of numbers.
Those numbers should be your mac address. If it starts with 0016, you have a problem, let me know.
Otherwise, delete that file with root explorer or adb if you are fancy.
Try your 4g again.
If that file was with the 0016, you need to find a way to change your mac address for the 4g radio (not that tough, but I don't know the command.) Find the thread for fixing a messed up mac address.
good luck

I have no actual way of testing it since I am not in a 4G area. I will be passing a 4G area and will try there. The reason I asked was because I had done the 4G radio update and saw how many problems people were having and wanted to check my symptoms. I was just alarmed when I thought there was another key missing from that output and saw no hash. Im guessing I have everything as needed then? In any case, I did update RA recovery and did a nandroid. I will flash back to a sprint image tomorrow and give it a try.

I actually have the 0016 xml thing, is that the only way to fix it?
edit: I reflashed my entire phone using this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915 Still not working, and i still have 0016 xml file =/

I can see my RSA key

First off my 4G turns on, connects, obtains an IP, and will send and receive data just fine. I have not lost my RSA key, but I have a different oddity in that I can SEE the key when I run the instructions on checking it.
All threads have said I should see this after the grep:
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA-REQUEST
RSA-REPLY
RSA-REJECT
RSA-ACK
RSA-1024
RSA
ReRSA
RSA requests
RSA replies
-----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
-----END RSA PRIVATE KEY-----
And that nothing should be between the two lines. Yet, I have a fairly long string of random characters and symbols between the BEGIN and END lines. Anyone else seen this?
No, but there's nothing really wrong with that. It might be that your version of busybox is just parsing not only lines with RSA in it, but also files that have RSA in the title.
If you want to see that this is normal (and some idiots who don't know how to mark their pastes as private, and have now given away their RSA keys for anything from their SSH access to WiMax to website certificates) check this out:

Gotta love it.. see it everyday.. no need to hack when you have those willing to give it away. Of course... they didn't lose it themselves via the stupidity train... its always those darn hackers.

The hackers forced them to post it online... or is that ninjas?
Anyway, thank you for the replies on this.

Transferring 4G Wimax key from one Evo to another

I recently discovered that my RSA Keys are gone (used the app from the Market for confirmation). A little while ago, I lost my Evo, I got a replacement, and the lost unit was found and returned to me later. It supposedly is blocked from going back on the network, so I'm not going to try and put it back on my account, but I checked last night and 4G connected w/out a problem. So I'm wondering if I could Amon-Ra Nandroid the phone w/the keys, and restore that to the new phone w/out the keys? Does it seem at all plausible, or is there a simpler way to transfer the keys from one unit to the other? I've been reading a lot of the 4G threads, and it seems like it is a possibility, I'm just unsure as to how exactly I should proceed w/out horking things up more.
Is it a possibility to make backups of the keys as per step 6a of this thread, edit the MAC and transfer them over? TIA for any guidance.
take the wimax.img from the phone with the good keys (bad esn) and put it on the sdcard of the phone with the bad keys (good esn) and then in the good phone open a terminal emulator and type su then type flash_image wimax /sdcard/wimax.img
feel free to make a backup of the bad wimax partition first just to be safe
A lot of what I read indicates that the keys are specific to the MAC address. Is this correct?

Ok, I can't say one way or the other if you can trade out your RSA keys between phones, but I wanted to tell you that sprint can unblock or unrestrict your old phone if you request them to. I lost my phone a few months ago and had to make a claim, I went through the whole process from the police report to getting my new replacement. The phone was blocked from the network a few weeks after I got the new phone - I found the old one, I called sprint and the police to let them know I had found the phone. Sprint asked me if I wanted the lock taken off it and now its the phone my sister has...works just fine, so if they tell you they cant remove the lock - tell the Rep you want to speak to a manager... now, there MAY be a limit on the days for the phone to be found before the lock becomes permanent i.e if the lock isnt lifted in 30 days or 60 days it becomes perm... but i found my phone in 3 weeks...
My understanding is you can't use another phones keys. I don't have any experience first hand, but there was a thread about this a couple days ago and everyone said the keys are phone specific and there is no way to switch.
+1
I lost my keys and researched for days. Wimax keys are non-transferable :/

Well, I did manage to use the aforementioned method from post #2 and got the key transferred. The WiMAX RSA Key Checker now says that the RSA key is present, so that's good. I've been researching this issue for the past couples days, there's a lot of info to process.
Edit: In the interim, I checked out this thread. I ran "fastboot oem wimaxrmac" and it didn't error out, it shows the IP address from the donor phone. It appears that the issue for everyone is that yes, the key is specific to the MAC, so the fact that the recipient phone is showing both MAC and key from the donor makes me think this might work after all.
Well, I can confirm that this method works. I am able to connect and sustain connection on 4G.
The RSA keys, mac address, username and password are all stored in the wimax image. So transferring it from one phone to another should work.
Good job, I think a lot of people will be interested in hearing about that
So a little off topic. I would like to use my laptops wimax proset 6250 to connect as its antenna seems to pickup better than the evo. Anyway to extract the keys and password so I can try to set them in as replacements for the ones in my laptop?

is your proset rooted?
Sweet, I'm gonna sell a copy of my wimax image to someone who needs some RSA keys lol, I don't use 4G anyway haha

Lost my WiMAX RSA key

TL;DR - There IS a WiMAX RSA key somewhere on our device and it CAN be lost. It would be great if we could track it down and figure out how to back it up.
Here's the story. I had to send my E4GT in to Samsung for a new logic board, and about a week after I got it back, WiMAX stopped working. I discovered that my WiMAX MAC address had reset to 00:00:00:00:00:00, and all the other settings (MRU, REALM, etc) had been cleared, as well. I was able to reprogram the MAC address to the one on the sticker, and the other settings to match my NS4G. I still couldn't connect, so I did a ##786# reset, and re-activated; still no go. I was getting desperate, so I called Sprint. The support agent didn't know jack about WiMAX, but she updated my profile, still no-go. I called Samsung, too, but they claimed there was not way the repair process could have affected my WiMAX. I have used the WimaxLineTest application to verify that Authentication fails, so I have to believe that there is an authentication RSA key somewhere in flash, which was lost when my WiMAX settings got reset.
I'm not looking for a solution to my problem, as my local Sprint store is getting me a replacement. I do think that it would benefit the community, though, if we could figure out where the RSA key is stored so we can find a way to back it up. Thoughts?

Cautionary tale: Crash when changing ringtone

I was going to ask a question, but then I found the solution. Since I couldn't find any helpful info before I solved it myself, I thought I'd post just in case someone else stumbles upon a similar issue.
I migrated my system data to my S3 from my Evo 3D, enabling the System Migration setting in Titanium Backup (after not doing so caused boot failure, leading to me needing to factory reset). For the most part, all was well, but I couldn't change notifications in any app. Going to a notifications screen caused whatever app I'm using to force close.
Using logcat, I found out that the crash was caused by an unhandled exception that read:
Couldn't open drm.db for writing (will try read-only)
android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: Can't downgrade database from version 4 to 1
and later on:
Writing exception to parcel
android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: Can't upgrade read-only database from version 4 to 1: /data/data/com.android.providers.drm/databases/drm.db
These errors led me to believe that TB had replaced my DRM database with an incompatible version from my Evo 3D. I considered moving the database to see if the system would simply regenerate it, but I decided first to try using TB to selectively restore these files from a Nandroid backup taken after my last factory reset. I restored the data files for .DRM and DRM Protected Content. I'm happy to report that all is now well, well at least until I run into the next issue.
Morals of the story:
(1) Be very careful restoring system settings to a different phone, even using the "safe" migration mode. You're probably better off backing up your SMS with a dedicated utility and recreating the rest of your system data
(2) Take a "clean" back up any time you do any flashing work. This will save you hours of yoru day if things get royally f'ed.

On some real sh*t I couldn't help it. I mean in what universe would this have worked. Obviously migrating system data from another phone, an evo no less is gna cause problems. And look at the morals of the story, I mean common sense if u ask me. How many people out there are really gna attempt this. Swear I tried to hold back. Couldn't resist
Whether it is a computer, phone or video game console I HATE migrating or transferring data.
Maybe I'm OCD but whenever I get new technology I'd rather sit there and redo everything then run the chance of one little imperfection from the old piece of technology ruining something. Well I guess I answered my OCD question.
