Lesson - if your gnex won't charge - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So my old gnex got exposed to minor water (vzw version). Neither of the tabs got exposed but the charging port was a little rusty. It no longer charged.
So I spend 700, put insurance on, and I have a new one. Two months later it won't charge. I bend up the little tab in the USB port and now its better. (Should have been manufactured a little tighter I guess). So now I go to the old rusty one, bend it up, now charges fine. I'm the proud owner of two nexii. Guess once I get elf_begin.c to stop throwing an error on the jb source I'll have a flashing device. Lesson? If it won't charge bend the tab. Mine will probably break with my luck soon. Anyone else have experience with the usb port acting funny?

When the Gnex was new, it cost like 800 bucks here.

Thanks for the tip! A meaningful thread title might be a good idea as well!

I just came over from the dx2. Got myself a great gnex for 250.00 on eBay. I would do it all over again. I although I can afford to spend the 700.00 for a new phone..it makes no sense to do so with so many great deals out there. You just have to look and be patient. I equate this to my previous cars...I have only purchased one new vehicle, right after college. That was a mistake that I won't make again. There's nothing wrong with getting a vehicle with 30k miles on it. Good luck with your gnex.

Yeah the prong actually bent down on my new gnex too. I have chargers at home car and work, so the port gets lots of wear. If it doesn't work try bending it. Fixed both

Also the first time my new gnex did it, I replaced the cable for a more snug one. Then it did it again and I had to bend the prong

Can someone be a little more specific with the bending procedure? Sorry for the dumb question I just don't want to damage the phone

If you look in the USB port, there's a little flat thing. If that thing gets pushed too far towards the bottom, it doesn't make proper contact with the charger.
I just stuck a knife in there and bent it up a bit. Not a lot . If you push it up too far the connector won't go in. If you're really paranoid, take the battery out of the phone so you don't short anything. And just slowly push it up. It only took a little bit for me to fix it

I got the Nexus i9250 (white/Unlocked) for $664.59 a couple weeks after release but i also been having problems with the prong.. some times it charges sometimes it doesn't but the annoying thing is this, i would have the lightning bolt inside the battery showing it was charging and it would say charging/battery level on the lock screen even when it wasnt plugged in ! now after bending it it goes and comes but when its not charging and i turn the screen off it turns it self on as if i connected the charger.. i was thinking i can do the following..
1, take it to Sprint/verizon and ask if they can replace the usb port i and pay out of pocket, but if they charge over $75 i might as well call the insurence company and have a replacement for that price..
2, buy a landscape charging dock but then i cant sync the phone to computer..
i cleaned inside incase it had dirt or anything was bent but nothing.. ANY IDEA WHAT I SHOULD DO ?? tia

I'll leave this here...because it's relevant.

I figure if it prevents a few people having to pay $100+ for insurance/full replacement on a HARDWARE issue because the carrier won't accept an unlocked/custom device for a warranty exchange...cool beans.

Thanks buddy worked for me! Gnex started acting weird when it came to charging after it fell in the snow, now it works!

Thank you very much this was a great help I've bought 3 different USB chargers trying to charge my phone and this fixed my problem in seconds and all 3 USB cables work for it.

I am having the same problem with my Gnex.
Got no problem at all. Fits very good, charging correctly and I can even hold my Gnex in the air just by holding it at the cable (without fear, that it will drop ).
I'm having the same problem. I took it to the Sprint store and took it for 2 hours. When I came back they said the battery is fine and they cleaned out the charging port. He also said they won't replace it because it's rooted. I played dumb was like "Root? What does that mean" When the guy asked if someone did something to my phone I said my boyfriend did something but I didn't know what. I asked it it can be unrooted and he said maybe. Whatever. I'm unrooting it tonight and taking it back to get a new replacement since I'm still having issues with the port. When I get a new one I'm going to sit in Starbucks next door to root it. My boyfriend couldn't root himself out of a paper bag.

BTW, I have no problems at all with my GNEX, but I think the microUSB port is too easy to break. After two years my old phone can not be charged anymore, because the microUSB port does not keep as the connector inside. I have to find a good position every time!
Make this

Mine is okay for now, but I do worry about it because it feels kinda fragile. That's why I'm getting the official dock. It's expensive, but the fact that it uses pogo pins means I can save using the USB port for more important things.

USB Port Pushed In, What Can I Do?

I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus I bought used (so no warranty), and somehow the USB port got pushed in. This makes it hard to charge since the cables don't really make contact anymore. I can still charge it but I have to plug the cable in like 6 times until it finally makes contact to charge. So my question is, what can I do? Since its used I don't think it has any kind of warranty so I guess that's out of the question. If I opened up the phone to expose the motherboard, could I re-position the USB port to its correct position? What would you do if you were in my situation?

Here's a link showing how to repair it. It's for VZW gnex but should be similar.
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairi...zon-LTE-Micro-USB-Charge-Port-Main-Mic/9641/1
I would just get a spare battery and external charger and swap the batteries every morning. Im not too much of a soldering kind of guy so if you are, then best of luck opening it up and seeing what the problem is. You can also take it to a local repair shop or mail it into an online repair store and dont think the cost will be more than 40-50 dollars. But good luck and hope it doesnt get anymore damaged.

if you look inside its no completely hollow theirs a little rectangle in the middle grab a pair of tweezers and pinch onto the rectangle and pull it back out

Assurion hooked me up!!!! I'm happy and rambling, so it's a long read! Lol

So I file a claim, pay the $200, and they sent me a replacement. It had a mark on the top right chrome trim ring, but I was just gonna deal with it as it was really tiny, even though I'm super picky about my devices. After I put my UAG case on it though, I noticed that the case didn't fit just right, and there was a gap in between the glass and the chrome trim. Also, the charger they sent was black instead of white. Most importantly though it was just 1 piece, with no usb to micro usb cable, and also rated at only 0.7A output. So I called them up, told them about my issues, and a replacement of both was being sent.
I received the replacements and the phone looked perfect. The charger was 2 piece this time, but still only rated at 0.7A output, and black again. So I'm on the phone with Sprint getting it activated, but I'm not getting an LTE signal, and I always get an awesome LTE signal at my house(36mbps download and 15mbps upload)!! The Sprint rep keeps trying to resend the data signal, and reset that signal, or whatever it is they do. After about 20 minutes of her trying everything she could, she noted my account that the device was faulty. I also told her about the charger only being 0.7A an she told me not to use it, an if I did then Assurion would be sending me another replacement before long. She said that they've had multiple S3's overheat and catch fire because the phone is trying to pull 2A from a charger that's not capable of 2A, and it's causing problems. Not saying that this is true, it's just what the Sprint rep told me.
So I called Assurion AGAIN an told them about the ongoing problems I've had and what Sprint had just told me. The rep transferred me to a manager, he apologized, and said that they would send me a new Note 2 since I've kept having ongoing problems with their refurbished units! He also said that I could keep any accessories that I wanted because all they need back is the phone itself! The next morning FedEx pulled up with my package, I open it up and sure enough I have a new Note 2 in an unopened box!!! I was really surprised that they actually did send me a new device in the box, just like I had just bought it off that shelf!!!
So I now have a new Note 2 with a numbers matching box, 3 batteries, 3 battery doors, and 3 S-Pens!! Having a numbers matching box and a device that will only be 3 or 4 months when the Note 3 comes to Sprint, should definitely bring top dollar when I go to sell it!! Not to mention having extra batteries, battery doors, S-Pens, chargers, official Samsung TPU case and flip cover, other name brand cases, etc.
Anyway, just thought I'd share my good luck that I had with Assurion! Makes me feel better about paying for insurance for so many years and never filing a claim before! Assurion surprised me and definitely hooked me up this time!!! Now I'm glad I had issues with the first 2 replacements because it definitely paid off in the end!! I'm one happy guy!!!! Big props to Assurion!!!

I reported my device lost, and my charger was also in the little bag my phone was in. Assurion had to send me a charger along with the phone, otherwise I wouldn't be able to charge the phone. Well, I guess I could have used another micro usb charger that I have because I have a LOT. Don't think any of my others are rated at 2A output though. I have plenty of HTC chargers and I know they're only 1A. I'll have to check the charger that came with my 2013 N7 FHD. I would think that it's more than just 1A, but it might not be. Oh, speaking of tablets, it just hit me that my Asus Infinity wall charger is 2.1A, I believe. I'll check both of them and edit this post once I find out. Doesn't matter now since I have a new 2A Samsung wall charger, but just in case anyone was wondering what the output of those chargers are. Now I'm curious myself to see what they both are!

This happened to mine as well. I have taken it apart and tightened the micro usb socket twice now. Works for a while but the overall design is the problem. This has always been a problem with micro usb and is why proprietary sockets are far superior to micro usb despite all the blather I hear about how convenient micro usb is. You can convert proprietary ports when needed and they dont fail like this.
My other two Android devices are like two years and both use micro USB, and they still work fine. It might be the design of the Nexus 7 itself.

I had this problem with my old Samsung Captivate. It would get so bad the cable would actually fall out. Have you tried a new cable? I thought my phone was damaged but I ordered a new OEM cable because I damaged the original and it also happened to fix the charging and loose connection issues. After a while, it happened again so I just ordered a few more cables on eBay. The reason I chose OEM cables was because the Captivate had a sliding door for the USB cable that often wouldn't accommodate a standard connector. After that experience, I try to stick with OEM cables when possible, just to be safe.

Mine is different. The micro USB would perfectly fit into the port. I would feel and hear a confident strong click and the movement is minimal. However, it would not sometimes charge and have to play with the cable while at the port.
Funny... I though I was alone 'cause no one would write about it..
I got 3 cables, all with slight different behaviors but generally loose, one of them actually falls off.
Patience is highly and thoroughly tested when I want to transfer data to my nexus.
Mine is loose. I have to slip a piece of paper in with the cable to pack it. Otherwise it won't charge.

Micro USB port replacement.

OK I've found out that my gnex doesn't charge anymore, sometimes it just says charging but it doesn't charge at all. It's been dead since this morning and I decided that I'll have to replace the USB port since I don't want to deal with that kind of thing by moving and forcing the cable to make contact.
Anyone have successfully replaced the USB port with or without the flex cable? And where did you buy the item. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Wow... That's hardcore surgery. You would be better off buying a Palm Touchstone kit off eBay (currently $8) and getting that working. It's pretty simple for someone who thinks he can replace a USB port, and it's the best charging method conceived so far. I have 8 of them...
Just google Galaxy Nexus Touchstone Mod for detailed tutorial with pics.

My port is fine. The first thing I did when I got my GNex was this mod. I loved my old Palm Pre, so I bought a couple spares and a ton of Touchstones for next to nothing when they went out of business. Eventually, though, I just couldn't live with an abandoned OS any longer... At least I can still use all my Touchstone chargers.
Nice man yeah this was the solution to my problem and also something I should have known to not get my port damaged in the first place. Thank you very much man. Appreciate it
