At&t ota push - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys,
At&t sent me an ota update. I downloaded it; it's like a 11mb file. However, I can't execute it because I have a custom rom. Does anyone knows what is it about?

if your on a custom rom and rooted, you can't take ota, and if you did somehow it will break your root. My advice if you like to customize, Don't do it ever!

mad96 is right that there's not much from the OTA you would want if you're using a custom ROM. However, you may want to try out the updated modem and/or kernel.
Head over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768826 for more details and CWM zip files for the kernel and modem.

[Q] Offical Jelly Bean Update w/Custom Kernel - Help

We should all be getting the official Jelly Bean update in the next few weeks from what I've heard. My main question is my GS3 right now is rooted, stock rom, with a custom kernel.
When the official JB comes out can I just update right away or do I have to put the original kernel back on the phone before doing so? Or will the update install a completely new kernel with the JB?
Thanks guys.
Any updates will install Rom kernel radio and recovery

I actually never updated via kies but i believe stock rooted should be fine to update.. correct me if in wrong guys.

Yes you can update with root, but unless you use Mobile Odin, voodoo ota rootkeeper, or cwm you will lose root.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Okay thanks for the tips on keeping root. But as I said right now I'm running the Trinity kernel. With the new JB update via OTA or Kies will the kernel also be replaced? Don't want the Trinity kernel on there as it probably won't be compatible with the new JB.
Yes they will be replaced. Everything is written over.. except data, which i recommend to wipe anyways lol

Actually it will probably fail. The ota requires you to be FULL stock. This includes kernel.

Hmm i just thought about that.. how is he running a custom kernel? Must be running a custom recovery and that will fail for sure. Not sure about custom kernel though.

Well, there are a few ways you can get a custom kernel without a custom recovery. Its rare to do so though.
But yeah if the kernrl isnt also matching stock itll surely fail

With my Nexus S when we received the JB ota update I was on a stock rom, rooted with a custom kernel and different radio and the update failed. If I resume..
Rooted with stock rom, custom kernel, different radio = Failed ota
Rooted with stock rom, stock kernel stock radio = Working ota
But I'm no expert, could be different with GS3

Cool, never did any official updates after all this time with android. Good to know lol... but probably never going to officially update anyways. Rather wait for someone to build a rom off it lol

Pretty sure I lost my original backup I created with Root, Stock Rom, Stock Kernel. Does anyone have a link to the STOCK UVALH2 kernel?
You can just use mrRobinson's Stock Rooted and then use the OTA Rootkeeper to temp unroot, take the OTA and then restore root.
When my Transformer went through several ICS OTAs, I learned a bit about how updates work. They first do a system check, meaning they look for Stock ROM, Stock Kernel, Stock Recovery (all of which can be found on here), but they also look for specific /system/apps (bloat). If there is something missing then the OTA will fail.
If you flash back to full stock, make sure you don't delete anything from /system or disable it in Settings. I ususally freeze it in TiB and then when taking the OTA, I just defrost them.
If you want to manually unRoot just use terminal and run the below.
Code:
su
rm -r /system/app/Superuser.apk
rm -r /system/xbin/busybox
rm -r /system/bin/su
reboot
You may need to take su out of xbin if it is in there too. Check before running these codes to see which or both it lies (/bin and*or /xbin)

[Q] CWM): !!!

Hello everyone i wa wondering how can i remove cwm recovery from my phone? i want my phone to be clean! and i wanna have an ota update to JB first so after i can root!
Via ODIN but why? By the time you get the OTA there will be a custom ROM to flash... unless you are one of the lucky few to get it on the day of release.
Make sure to restore your stock recovery as well.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
how via odin? and also actually on redmondpie there is a app/mod that gets you the updates literally minutes after the ota update appears so yeah please explain how to remove via odin???
Search next time please

I do have one question though if I root my phone will I still get ota updates?
No you will not receive ota updates rooted. Unrooting is pretty easy though and someone usually turns the update into a flashable zip.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Flash with stock firmware for your phone model, or kernel only, if you have stock rom with cwm

is the flashable zip the exact! same thing as the ota update? does it come with touchwiz and all same features as ota update?

Run.. your phone may explode at any moment.
Worse case you will have to re root the phone. Not a biggy tho.. Rooting this thing is exceptionally easy.

That's your JB OTA. You can accept and it will install (if you have a stock recovery), or fail (if a custom recovery). If on stock recovery, you will loose root, but can just root again. If on custom recovery, nothing will happen, but you'll continue to receive the notification until you either have a build.prop that matches the latest base, or flash a ROM based on the latest base. Which is my recommendation. Browse the options available in the Android Development thread, choose one of the LJ7 ROMs, flash, and be happy!
ROM - Odexed Blue JB "Holy Grail" LJ7
Baseband - LJ7

System update

My Sprint SGS3 is flash with a donor to Boost Mobile and also is rooted wirh Superuser and for some reason I cant seem to be able to do a System update. Can anybody help I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to this stuff... but my understanding is that if you don't have stock rom and stock recovery, you're pretty much stuck with what you got. Tons of custom rom out there though that have all the nifty software upgrades, just take a look around XDA.

You trying to flash a factory rom update? If so it's not going to work with custom recovery. Have to have stock recovery. Also, being that it's flashed to Boost, it may not work with stock recovery either.
message brought to you by my GalaxyS3
You mean a OTA update?

What i would suggest you do is go to the Sprint Galaxy S3 FAQ by @flastnoles11 at the top of this thread you cant miss it and look for custom recoveries FAQ and you can flash stock recovery over CWM recovery in CWM recovery if that makes sense then call the person that flashed your phone and make sure you can do system updates cause it could kick your flash trying to update it since your not on sprint.

You may want to check out THIS thread.
Read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2209418
But you can take the update and it will not remove your flash. However, it is failing right now because it is signed with special keys and the custom recovery cannot verify them.
Just read the thread I linked and follow the directions for updating.

Stock MC2 Recovery

for those that needs it to flash ota update, and is currently on MC2 firmware.
enjoy !!!

Well, if you're feeling up to it, you could test it for the rest of us. No one seems to have reported back about anything yet. I'm sure that it will break root though.

i didnt go back and reread it but i think thats what garwynn tried and he lost root.
This is kinda required to get the OTA, isn't it?
If I understand correctly, the OTA will fail if rooted? Or is that it will fail if CWM/TW recovery is in place?

It will fail if you have cwm or twrp in place.....you need the stock recovery for it.....I think it will work even if you have root, but your root will be lost once you update

Thanks.. I thought it was one of those, just couldn't remember which. I may just hold off until I see what others are doing. I am going to look for a nice TouchWiz ROM that allows me to theme it.
Once the awesome Devs here at XDA get their hands on the code, it won't be long before we have a rootable Stock 4.3..
I've been wondering.
Do I need a stock recovery and a stock ROM to update or can I be running a custom ROM such as digiblur and update using stock recovery?

I'd just throw that under the "do not attempt" category. Odds are that while trying to apply the update, stock recovery would detect some assets that don't belong in your current build and abort the update. Also, if this update was successful and something messed up, you would now have no custom recovery. You would have to Odin back to whatever software version possible.
