I recently did my ota to jellybean and restored my root access with voodoo. When I enabled lbe privacy app it caused my phone to continually reboot. I had to yank the battery out to stop it. I ended having to restore it to factory settings in recovery mode. Was not happy about this to say the least. Lost root basically had to start over. Beware of this app.

For me, LBE Privacy Guard is a must HAVE app. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with jellybean. I hope developers update it asap.

I was looking at the app and it has serious conflicts with Google now. Google now has various hooks in a variety of apps which causes this.

Hopefully the Dev team will sort it out. It was very useful on ICS, but I ran into the same issue as you when I tried using it in JB.

Boot to safe mode and uninstall it. I ran in to this too before reading up on it, not expecting the app to make the phone unusable.

I just simply denied it root access, and it stopped rebooting.
I had the same problem as you, the phone soft-rebooted when LBE was given root access.
But i quickly (had like 1 minute before LBE kicked in) went into superuser-app and told it to prompt LBE, and when LBE wanted root access, i denied it, and the phone worked as usual again
to get LBE to work install it, grant root, reboot into recovery and fix permissions no need to wipe
LBE still needs to be updated for JB compatibility ... active protection is not working but traffic monitoring is
I am going to install it in a SDK see if I can play with it.

I guess for now if I feeling paranoid and wearing my tin hat I will switch my Sim card to my Nokia. I have lookout on my phone so I know which apps are tracking lbe was there to control them.

I guess my fingers were not that quick. I had all my important stuff backed of course. Just tedious logging back into all my services. Reloading and installing all the apps I use.:banghead:

Yeah, but without the active protection service. And i use LBE for that. I don't care for traffic monitoring .

I tried the LBE-version which is included in MIUI 4.1 and it works great
Maybe has not that much features like the market-LBE but it's enough for me.
You can't install it, you have to copy it to /system/app and set the permissions to 755.

i loved LBE PG on my Galaxy Nexus with ICS. the most useful/important app for my peace of mind...
since Jelly Bean i have the same problem with reboot loops and an inevitable restore.
what do you guys think of Permissions Free? it isnt as easy to use as LBE PG, but it seems it delivers the same feature of per-app setting of permissions. when you start it though, you have to be patient as the app does a check procedure first. and after diasallowing a permission for an app the phone needs a reboot... there is also a couple of features only on the paid version...
pdroid is obviously not available for JB either...
how is this type of app not the main issue??? setting these things is so crucial to privacy!

Just wondering what the general opinion is on the various security apps that are available? I currently have Lookout installed and running and I've been looking at LBE Privacy Guard and DroidWall on the Market, anyone using these (or other security apps)?
Not sure what the impact on battery life would be having too many of these security apps running
I like the look of the app privilege security feature in CynagenMod (which LBE seems to to do a similar job) would love it if that was available in ARHD.

I have lookout and HTCSense.com running - lookout checks for dodgy apps and does a fantastic job at locating device (just got me to 47m), HTCsense.com does the remote lock and if all else fails, wipe.

Probably not but I think it's better to safe, just in case. The LBE privacy guard is to limit what apps can do once installed, I think it's a good idea to be able to restrict their permissions, I'm going to install this at some point this week and have a play.

Never managed to get HTCSense to work, only ever said my current location was in the middle of the ocean, so I gave up on it!

Its an app manager that lets you control what apps have access to. You can block apps from accessing the internet, viewing your personal info and take away any permissions you dont want it to have.
A big benefit to this also is battery life will go up as a result of blocking apps which always connect to the internet to upload your data or steam ads to you. A lot of freeware apps also have way too many permissions and this lets you effectively block them.
Its the first thing I install everytime I use a new rom

I really appreciate you posting this and letting us know about this app! I don't think I would've come across it otherwise.
So I installed it and I'm just dumbfounded at all the stuff that some apps want access to....Why the f*** does Angry Birds: Space need to access my phone's GPS data?? There's an odd one!
Oh, by the way....a co-worker of mine with an iPhone smugly showed me that the functionality of LBE Privacy Guard app is actually built right into the iOS.
Not trying to turn this into an Android Vs Apple thread, but man, that kinda got under my skin.

If I recall, there's a developer option you can enable in CM7 that allows you to do just this. Just press the permission you want to block when installing the app or afterward. CM9 doesn't (to my knowledge) have this option yet, but I'm sure it will. Good day, iPhone users =).

Its scary how many apps want full control of your phone. Ive seen them wanting to read my contacts list and even control my messaging app. A lot of it has to do with data mining of their customers. All the info they collect from you is pretty valuable and the gps thing is pretty scary too. Theyre able to record your coordinates and report the info back to them. Not to mention its going to kill your battery too with them doing this.
Security apps I use
Droidwall - simple iptables for android
PDroid - like it better than Lbe, takes less resources but needs patch and waiting for ics support
Addons detector - shows which apps have "adware, spyware, etc."

PDroid gives message saying I needed to build somethingortheother first in order for it to work on my OG EPIC 4G .... LBE working great right outta the box though
Wow its come a long way I remember this when I first got rooted the guy mentioned using this... but its icon was red and the ui was bland they really uped it a notch =] completely forgot about this app thanks.. love it.

I've been looking for the answer to this question ever since 4.1 came out. I hope the LBE people put out an update sometime soon. It's an excellent app.

It's working good on ICS and JB.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
LBE Security (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422479) works on my Galaxy Nexus JB with Paranoid Android 2.13 and has LBE Privacy Guard for Permission Management included.

I tried sideloading this app from an apk on my optimus v. It installed and opened fine but then it started shutting off my screen and it became unresponsive. Had to reflash JR5 to fix it. Just a heads up, do not install it.

Development died on that app a while back .. wonder if the privacy was actually private ??
That would be a bummer if it's dead - actually worked very good on my photon 2.3.4/5 versions - especially in customizing app specific permissions / overall surprised to see what's really going on albeit the listed, and at often times - vague permissions listed on the play store.
As said, it's [LBE] does not work for jellybean / wish there was a simply comparable app that will run just like this on stock/root only builds - pdroid is all I hear of as an alternative, but it requires a few steps/patch - not even sure if it works better and optimized for N7.
Having a permissions manager goes a long way - even if you look at things closely from legitimate market sources - it is only getting worse. I'm being far from naive here Although LBE's origins were questionable and skepticism grew, enough people had checked it out to their best ability; in concern to why the app itself needed data connection, and what (if anything serious) was being sent. Haven't seen anything comparable to its finite permissions control upon installing anything. The N7 still needs something for sure...,

This thought started when I decided I'd like to install Cerberus anti theft which has more features than Android Device Manager. Much to my surprise ADM is already on my phone w/ device administrator privileges... and I was never prompted to accept the installation nor approve granting the administrator privilege.
Thinking it best to have only one anti theft app I investigated uninstalling ADM, which it appears is not possible. This brought me to the question what would I be giving up if I flashed a ROM and didn't install a gapps package? I think I could find apk's for apps I use without going through Play.
Somebody smarter than I probably knows or has tried this and could save me a bunch of trial and error effort to find out. Opinions or links would be appreciated.
I suppose installing a gapps package but not logging into my google account would give me the same control over my phone and whatever false sense of anonymity that I think I am getting.

PROBABLY NOT!! I flashed a Kit Kat rom I like, with no gapps the home button and browser didn't work and the quick settings pull down was empty- and possibly more issues. It seems Kit Kat compatible gapps packages have ADM so you're stuck with it. With no Google account on the phone ADM won't work, and of course there's no access to Play.
BTW Cerberus works great, easy to use and install and co-exists with ADM.

I know you could install jellybean Roms with no Gapps, and they would work fine. But that was on 4.1.2
