[Q] Generic Network Failure...MMS

Ok i have searched and searched and searched some more and can not find an answer. Hopefully i am placing this in the correct place.
I am currently running Synergy. I am having issues with receiving and sending pictures via messaging app (stock and I've also tried Handcent). I guess I can't even say its an issue, it just does not flat out work. I can not send or receive pictures.
When I receive a picture message, it comes through with a click able download button. Click it, and nothing happens for a few minutes. Them shortly after, I receive a notification stating, "Message not downloaded, Generic network failure"
Pretty much same goes for when trying to send one. It attaches fine and compresses for MMS but then I get pretty much the same notification a few minutes later, "Unable to send message after multiple attempts, Generic network failure."
I have attempted numerous ways of fixing this to no avail. I tried turning off WiFi, that didn't work. Re-flashed Rom, no go. I was thinking perhaps I need to update radios, pri,prl ect? I am trying to avoid a hard reset as i don't want to lose root. Any ideas on a fix?

I recently had this problem too. I found the fix here on the forum. If you have titanium back up you need to start it up. Click backup/restore then scroll down to [SMS/MMS PREFS] Messages 1.00. Click on that and then click wipe data. You will lose all your messages so back them up if you need them. Reboot your phone afterwards. This is what I did and it fixed this problem.

Thanks for the reply. That sure sounds like it would do the trick. I tried and it didn't work when I scroll down to mms preference in TB mine is 3.xxx (something) not 1.0 like you had said. Not sure what that's all about. I went ahead and cleared data anyway and rebooted. When I opened TB after restarting it still said I had 1 backup. So I'm thinking for some reason it didn't wipe it. Getting so frustrated.

TB seems to bring issues when restoring text messages from older versions of texting apps. The new stock version has a backup feature within...give it a shot and good luck!

I tried the same thing and it didn't work at first. When following the post I didn't see any SMS/MMS/APN dialer that the post mentioned. I didn't see it because TB said the apps were ordered by name, but the sms/mms pref and apn dialer don't follow that rule.
Carefully look through and find both of them, then wipe the data and follow the rest of the #4 in the post.

Can't send SMS after changing Phone Testing settings

Hello all,
I have an issue that I could really use some input on.
I am currently unable to send a txt message and can't figure out why, but this is what I did.
I went into Phone Testing settings (the #*#* command) and only really looked around. I checked the other band options but put it back to GSM/CDMA auto. I also looked at the Select Bands option and am not sure what it was set to before, but I just chose Auto.
After I did that I am now unable to send txt messages and can't think of anything else I may have done to mess it up. Handscent nor the stock txt app will send, it just fails immediately.
I otherwise have a strong signal and full data connectivity. I tried a baseband restore as well as reinstalling the kernel and that has not restored my sms.
I didn't change any settings in APN and even restored it to default.
I'm using Team KANG milestone 2 and Franco Kernel 14 on WIND in Canada. Everything was working just fine before all of this.

UPDATE: I also did a CWM restore of a backup I did only an hour or so before this happened and when things were working fine and now I'm getting panic prompts for 'google.process.gapps'. Ideas??
UPDATE 2: Judging from other posts in his thread it COULD be related to the Franco Kernel, he just upped a fix for something. Going to try flashing the old one and then to the newest to see if that helps.
UPDATE 3: It did not, still can't send txt.

I remember reading a post like this before, don't remember if it was fixed or not

Type *#*#4636#*#* in your dialer. Press phone info. Scroll down to smsc and then press refresh then update. See if that works. Otherwise you can manually enter that number. Search for the smsc # for your carrier.

Actually I have solved the mystery!
What I apparently did was delete my SMSC number in the Phone Testing menu by hitting 'Update' next to the box... so I'd advise anyone else not to do it either lol.
I found the code needed for WIND in Canada too in case anyone finds themselves in this situation.
You need to re-enter the SMSC Carrier number. For WIND Mobile Canada, SMSC is 16135009000
Android requires you to enter this info in Hex.
Hex = 07916131059000F0
In the dialpad enter *#*#4636#*#*
Select phone information
Scroll down to SMSC field, enter 07916131059000F0 and done. Then reboot

You can find the code to other networks with a search here at XDA, just remember that you apparently need to convert to HEX first.

I read here that it is apparently a bug and so may not actually be your fault!

Not really a bug. The carrier doesn't expect people to know how to go into the service menu and change it themselves. People really shouldn't be randomly hitting buttons that they don't understand what it will do.. Google could have designed the UI better also. It's kind of a huge mess of a design.

Did you even read what I posted? I'll quote: "It apparently wipes the SMSC number as soon as you enter the hidden phone settings...". Now, that's not randomly hitting buttons is it? Just viewing a settings menu shouldn't wipe a setting (and, it hasn't before for me on gingerbread, froyo or eclair) so I'd call that a bug.

That is not true. It only removes the SMSC if you touch the update button. I have been in that menu a lot and have never had it randomly delete my SMSC settings.

But, I could say that is not true. I didn't touch anything other than the network mode (changing from WCDMA Preferred or GSM auto (PRL)) yet mine got wiped. Just 'cause it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it isn't a bug!

How sure are you that you didn't hit update? It's not intuitive that you are not supposed to do it so you might have done it without thinking. Also, I noticed a lot of tutorials online that tell people to hit update when they shouldn't be doing that.
This is the first I've ever read of this as the most likely cause was that button. Just re-read the first post and there might be a bug in the kernel? Or maybe it's just an Orange thing, but didn't think there was much difference between the different versions of yakju**.

I'm pretty damn sure I didn't touch that button. I wasn't going anywhere near that setting until I went in the second time after noting I couldn't send texts. I think one thing that should be sorted is the requirement to enter the SMSC in HEX format, that wasn't required on my desire.

SMSC code for AT&T US
The SMSC code for carrier AT&T US is: 07913121139418F0
Once you put the SMSC code in, click update, then refresh and your all set. NO REBOOT / RESTART needed.

Mms on JB roms

I have been unable to receive mms messages on every JB rom with every modem and kernel out there while I AM NOT ON WIFI. Is there a fix for this I may have missed? They notify me but stay as "Downloading" permenantly?

I have the same issue and I still have yet to find a fix for it. But alas thats what you get for running a nightly.

I started with CM10 Nightly 0906 Nightly and I was in same boat. By clearing app data in settings I started receiving some of the pics. Still not able to get video. Will have some one try again tomm. Also I can't send video tells me "Message Size Limit Reached" "You can't add this video to your message"
So made some progress but not 100% yet! I have read all kinds of things. Also found this stuff but have not tried any of it yet and not sure any of it will help!

The first link DID fix my issue in CM9 but doesn't work for CM10 (sprint)

I was havin mms issues on cm10 nightlies, until i read someone's suggestion to go into messaging settings, and toggle auto retrieve for mms. I unchecked it, and have been able to receive all my mms.. Hope this works for you guys..

Ya, I tried that to and it works for my Pics but still cant send or receive video. So who knows. I guess since a lot of people are not complaining it seems to be hit or miss!
Kind of like the photos in gallery. I here some complaints about old pics not showing up. But mine has been working perfect.
I am thinking about wiping everything and starting on the latest build just to see. But who knows!

On cm10 clean install with the first nightly onward, I've never been able to send or receive MMS until the following finally worked for me on sprint. YMMV:
Got mms working finally by deleting mms.db and telephony.db in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony in databases folder (delete the 4 files in that directory). . I also happened to clear messaging app and phone app data by force stop and then clear data thru settings / apps / (scroll to rightmost category to find all apps / scroll down to find phone and messaging apps). Reboot Also did the voice dialer app --> open apns voice command and edit sprint mms proxy to 68.28.31.7 and mms port 80. Save (settings->save) and reboot. Not sure if all these steps needed or just first one.
UPDATE: It works but gets stuck again and requires a repeat of the above. Not sure this is really a fix.

G2 erased ALL my texts... please help

so i use handcent program as opposed to the default one and while using it all of a sudden all my texts from the beginning of time are gone! the program didn't quit or anything, i just went back to the main menu and everything was gone.
is there a way to restore this at all?

i read somewhere a while back that handcent actually stores all your incoming and outgoing sms regardless of whether you delete them, in a database file. i tried searching for it but couldn't find anything on that.

That's a shame, I had the same thing happen to me a while ago. I was so distraught that start using SMS Backup to store all my text msgs. It's sorta cool is when I switch phones or anything, it would automatically download into my newest phone and you can search through your msgs on gmail.
I would try restarting the phone if you haven't already (stupid suggestion I know) and see maybe it was just a glitch. Hopefully someone on here will be able to help!

SMS's not sending - Have to reboot to send.

I'm having an issue with my SMS where after a while they will sit in my inbox trying to send but not actually send or fail. I physically have to reboot the phone for them then to send. S-off, rooted running ARHD 10.2. I'm not sure if it's more network related or handset related as I can receive and everything else works solidly.
Anyone else experienced this?

I am running a similar set up like you, im on ATT, I can't say I've had that problem enough to say its a problem..
Obviously your service is good in that particular area?

Yeh I have upgraded my firmware before flashing 10.2. It's an intermittent problem which is the most annoying thing. In the ARHD post there seem to be at least 2 others with this same issue as well which is strange...

I had an issue with sms notifications after I installed a custom rom. Then learned that my problem comes from the hearbeat interval settings. I think my carrier uses a custom value (5min is default) and since I changed the rom, their settings have not been pushed to my phone.
Testing several things I came across this app. It will not hurt to try it:
Install an app called "pnf push notification fixer". Is free from store.
Set the heartbeat mobile interval to 3 minutes.
Reboot.
Make sure the value did not change itself
Monitor and see if the problem stays the same.
This maintains the connection alive for me.
Have you checked when you experience the issue if the sms carrier center number removes or changes?

I had a bit of both. The cellphone was not maitaining the network alive fast enough.

I have the same issue.
I've tried what jmoneste wrote, but the problem still persist. SMS keep failing. Everytime I want a message to be sent I have to activate airplane mode and then desactivate en resend the SMS. It's so annoying.
This problems comes from stock rom and now I'm using the Viper One ROM but it still fails.
Has anyone found the solution?

I too have the sms not sending until put in flight mode and then off it again occasionally. Cant believe that its so common, but theres no fix. My phones completely stock too!
