I've Scoured and Searched need help - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok here goes the best to say i just got an epic 4g and i really really wanna keep this phone. First things first I installed the update to the phone for FC 09 i feel kinda dumb now for doing that. The phone now just constantly reboots when the screen comes on after it being off. As well usb is not recognized ive tried everything new cables other cables other computers other drivers official drivers. I would like to some how get off the fc 09 update but theirs no way for odin or even hemidell to recognize my device. Can anyone please help me out

Well, it's worth trying make sure to cover all your bases again to get Odin to work. It shouldn't be that difficult to get it to work. I have no problem, even with stock cables. Worst case scenario, you're bone stock, so you may be able to get Sprint to take care of the issue for you.

without the usb connecting is their any way for odin to connect I've used every possible driver for the phone and others from devices similar is their other drivers then just the usb driver i use to have a lg optimas s and i needed like 3 drivers to ever get that thing connected

Try uninstalling all device drivers you don't need for other devices and the epic. Reboot, do a reinstall, and reboot again. Try connecting again, and give it some time. If drivers aren't installing still after a few minutes, unplug and plug in again. Give it a min or two to finish installing the drivers. Open Odin and try one more time. If it lists a com port in yellow, you've done it. Otherwise I'm unsure why it's not connecting. Also, try the different cables if drivers aren't installing. And use different USB Ports on your computer if issues persist.

Did you get it figured out?

What OS are you attempting to use. Vista and 7 were picky for me the try to use the phone initially as a mass storage device. Is it trying to connect and failing to associate the drivers or just nothing at all? Sometimes a battery pull and mashing buttons for 20 seconds then plugging in with odin open, with no battery helps.

My main computer is windows xp pro service pack 3 ive installed the particalur drivers it charges through usb but that is all. still havnt figured it out my other computer is windows 7 ultimate and it doesnt recognize it there either ive also tried loading it through a hub with no go but ill try some of the things you guys said again and make shure to follow them to the key

You should only need the Samsung drivers to get it to connect. I always use a USB port on the back of the tower instead of a front port. Sometimes they can be flaky. Good luck.

probably going to take it back to sprint next week i bought off of someone else becuase i wanted a new phone. I'll pay the 35 to get it replaced thanks for all those who have helped me out its greatly appreciated

Yepper. But that is a good point too, I cannot get my epic or epic touch to connect without plugging into a USB port integrated into the motherboard. Even then I sometimes have to plug and unplug a couple quick times. Mine are still picky too.

I had to go to samsung website and download the drivers for the epic from there. Also try different usb ports. A good thick blackberry cable has never failed me.

My Epic wont get recognized by any comp

Would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to fix this. It was always a problem my or any computer i used would never find my phone when i connected it via USB. I always got something saying usb port malfunction and when i go to my computer phone never shows but phone does charge through the usb so it is connected. Any help here would be appreciated.
P.S ive tried about 5 different usb cords and atleast 5 different computers even ones on campus
Take it to the store...
Get a new cable...a heavy dudty one like a Blackberry or Palm. It takes nothing to charge through the cable but a lot to pass data.

.. i had same problem: tried many cords, comp, reinstalled drivers, etc.
Finally i odined the phone as if it was bricked and all was well.
To make long story longer.... initially my comp would ID my phone great, (I rooted, mass storage the card, etc). but i took the phone to Sprint for other problems. I dont know what they did but my comp did not recognize my phone when i got it back, no matter what i did.
Odined the phone and poof! everything was back to normal.

[Q] No power no nothing

I need some serious help. I just got this phone and was getting ready to root it and here is what happened. I opened up odin, unchecked f. reset time, put victory_8G_100528.pit in pit according to http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SPH-D700-ODIN, then added stockdeoEC05.tar.md5 in PDA. Hit start and the screen said something about partition, the phone shut off and nothing since. I can't even get a charge. The phone has no life at all.
Please help
Try leaving your battery out for 30 min and see if you can get into download mode with usb plugged only. Also, check this thread. Its a guide for bringing a semi bricked epic back to life.

Thanks I will try but phone won't do anything so far... 30 mins it is...
What did I do wrong?
No luck...

Phone is in downloading mode and I'm downloading the tar from the link you gave me. Any idea what happened so I don't do it again? This was my first time using Odin so I'm not familiar with it. Did I set it up right? I have to learn from my mistakes and I promised my mom m Moment, which I had to reactivate just now. Geez Laweez...
Glad to hear it. I would buy a better usb cable for the future if you are still using the stock one.

The factory usb cable is great for charging but nothing else. You need a good cable for data transfer. I always use my old Blackberry usb cables they are awesome, BB depend on a lot of data sync with the computer their cables are great.

Here we go...
Okay now I can't get the pc to recognize the device. I tried the drivers from the pack ont those links you gave me prior, and even tried some others. Swapped 3 different usb cords too BTW the only thing it will do is go to download mode by taking battery & card out, plugging in usb while holding 1 & power.

Did you reboot your computer after installing the drivers?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yes I did. Still have the same issue. Last time it worked was when I used Odin and the phone never rebooted. That's what started this thread.
I'm trying to see what happens when I try this on my desktop... Will update soon...
Drivers not working
Even when I tried my desktop (XP, laptop Win 7) I got the same results... Device not recognized...
Even when I click on there was a problem with the device message and go to update driver, it tells me there is no driver installed or needed for this device. I'm hopeful this can be fixed but I can't get the device to be seen and it's stuck in downloading mode. I have searched all the forums and haven't seen this issue yet. Does anyone know how to fix this when it only turns on without the battery in while plugging in the USB and holding 1 & power? I had issues with the device being seen before this happened but man I'm lost as what to try. I even tried the one on the samsung site... of course uninstalling the previous ones and resetting the computer before my attempts.
Are you using the usb ports in the back of the computer that are directly connected to the motherboard?

[Q] Did I finally brick it?

I was installing a new Kernel late last night, kernel didn't have a posted checksum and yet I flashed anyway. CWM said it had flashed correctly. I erased my cache and dalvik and rebooted. Now I can't make it past the SAMSUNG screen. Cool! I'm no noob (just a lurker), I've run into problems before. It won't go into CWM, acts like it really wants too, but goes back to the SAMSUNG screen when it should be displaying CWM. I go to ODIN back to stock, put the phone into 'download mode' and the computer can't find the phone. I tried 3 different cords, all of my USB ports, battery pull and put back into 'download mode', reinstalled the Samsung drivers - nothing. I've used Heimdall several times in the past on my Ubuntu laptop. I try using Heimdall, all the USB ports, cords, Heimdall can't see the phone in download mode. I've run out of ideas, where do I go from here? Should I start looking for a replacement phone?
Hm
Try another computer? I've been having tough times with my Epic too, but i think its because I've worn down the pins on the Epic's side..
I totally see myself buying a brand new epic, and transferring my old epic's life into the new one, just to make sure I wont ever be able to not recover my phone.
Could be gunk in the usb port. This allows the charge but not necessarily the data connection. See if you can clean it.
Just use a different computer. You'd be surprised how some comps just won't work but another will using the same exact files, USB cable, etc.
I've tried two computers thus far. I think I'm going to try cleaning the port... somehow...
Slide in the USB slow on both the PC and the phone.

Phone is ruined?

So, I think I am screwed.
I am going to preface this by saying that I am very familiar with Android phones and am certainly not a noob. However, i am stumped here.
A few hours ago I tried updating my girlfriends phone to the latest version of MIUI 4. Well, it turns out that I was the poor guinea pig who found out for everyone that the uploaded file did indeed have an MD5 mismatch.
Anyhow, this borked my recovery (supposedly because a new kernel/cwm version was baked in to this flash).
Ok, I thought, I'll just put the phone in "Download Mode" and Odin back to stock and start over.
WRONG
The phone is NOT RECOGNIZED ON ANY COMPUTER. Not two different laptops running Windows 7 64-bit. Not a desktop running Windows 7 32-bit and not a Linux Box.
This isn't the typical "unrecognized device" error. I literally mean that it is NOT SEEN by any of these machines. There is no Windows "ding" or "noise" when it is plugged in. Nothing shows up in device manager as an unrecognized device. Nothing happens when I plug it in to my Linux machine.
I have tried FOUR different cable. The original Epic cable. My Epic Touch cable (which used to work great). A cable from a Nook Simple Touch and a cable from an HTC phone.
I am 99% certain that this is a hardware error and her phone is now ruined. She does not have TEP (she cancelled it for some reason -_-).
Has anyone ever heard of this? It can't be a driver issue because it would at least be seen by one of my devices correct? Or there would at least be a Windows "sound" when it is plugged in? The phone charges when connected, but nothing more whatsoever. I had issues in the past because of driver issues or bad cables. But, the fact of the matter is that the other day (when the phone was working fine) we plugged it into a computer and it would not recognize the phone at all (as I explained earlier). Even when storage was mounted, not a single thing was detected even though it used to work.
Sorry for the long winded and redundant post... It's quite late and i've been trying to fix this without freaking the woman out for the past 3+ hours. Driving me insane!
Anyone have any ideas? Or, any options I can take for if it truly is a lost cause?
Thanks everyone
uninstall all other phone drivers. Reboot. Install the drivers here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Windows is very very picky with drivers. If that doesn't work none of the cables you have used is a blackberry. I would say go out and buy a good blackberry cable or at least a good thick cable. Try another USB port as well. You can even try a fresh install of windows. If all fails then the USB is borked. Or it is dirty... see if you can't clean it out if you can see any lint or other gunk.

This might seem really crazy but i had the exact same problem about a year ago. It wasn't the cable, computer or the drives.
check the little connector piece in the phone where cable meets the phone. Its a small copper piece that can be notorious for bending up or down. I could charge my phone like you but couldn't figure out why the hell it wasnt syncing so try that and i could guess that's the issue. since its your gf's then Im sure she has some tweezers that an bend it back up but be very careful.

Also, the connector is physically bent. I'm going to try and bend it again today. The sides visibly form an ever so slight "u" shape.
I took the phone apart as well last night to get a better look. That piece does not appear to be interchangeable whatsoever. The entire input is like, awkwardly soldered to the system board...

Do you think a JTAG would work? I truly think that this is a problem with the actual USB connector (we had problems with it before it got "stuck", EX: It wouldn't mount USB storage on any machines... Not detected at all when plugged in, aside from being charged). It isn't actually bricked... If my recovery would not have been wiped out by flashing the ROM with a bad MD5 OR, if I could get it to work on a PC/Linux machine I could easily Odin/Heimdall. I'm not exactly sure what a JTAG is, but I am 99% sure that I could fix this if it weren't for some crazy ass hardware issue. I'll try calling around.
Thanks man.
Its a direct communication with the board, is what I've grasped from hearing and reading about it. With this and a program it should rewrite things and allow you to flash things. Although now that I think about it your not hard bricked if you can get into Odin. And jtag usually puts it into download mode. Although I'm sure you can flash the stock firmware via jtag. Like I said Google things

Computer doesn't recognize phone

When I plug my phone pc gives me error that it doesn't recognize the USB device. I tried to adb to phone, still no luck. I was on cm11, reinstall rom. I uninstall driver from device manager, and adb drivers. Still can't connect. I was reading on the Internet maybe the device is bad. I had my nexus for 2 years and I never had this problem. Adb and my computer would always recognize my device. The thing that sucks my Verizon contract expired so I cancel my service. I was going to program my phone for page plus, but I can't because my computer won't recognize my phone. I had to activate my Samsung fascinate with page plus, but it sucks cuz I really wanted my nexus, can anyone help?

Could be a few things, but I would try a different USB port on your PC, then I would try a different USB cord, and then try a different PC. If none of those get you a different result then could be the USB/charging port on your device, even though it may charge, it may still have trouble transferring data. I have seen on here where others have changed the port on their device and say it is fairly easy, I have not had to do so yet so I can't say from experience. If you are sure that you have the latest Samsung drivers installed on your PC then I doubt it is software related (not positive). Not sure if I am any help, just throwing out some suggestions. Maybe someone else can add some more definitive answers for you.

If you can work with device over ADB but system doesn't recognize phone, you must have bad drivers or OS. Try linux. I
Well I got my phone to work. I was reading how someone use a toothpick to lift up the tongue inside the USB port. So I use a tiny flathead messed with it for like a hour, kept plugging it to my pc until it connected. Once it did I push all the files I needed with adb to get it ready to get it ready to be program for page plus. Now I got my nexus on page plus, just activated it today, service is pretty good , they only that sucks is their is no 4G, but it feels good to only pay $50 for unlimited voice, text and 2.5 gb of data.
