With the new OTA ICS that was released today, any way to disable the camera sound?
Note, I am not rooted.
Any help will be appreciated!
Root
Delte the files and than unroot

Short answer is NO.
Some of the camera sounds can be deleted if you're rooted. You could then unroot.
BUT you'll still have that anoying autofocus/save sound. That is built into the APK in ICS.
If you want a truly silent cameral you'll have to root, remove the camera.apk and camera.odex. Then extract a truly silent camera (there are many ROMs here with completely silent cameras) from one of the ROMs and push (copy) it to the system/app folder on your phone. Set the permissions RW-R-R. Then reboot make sure the camera works (you must reboot! and wait for the camera to load the first time while it builds a cache).
If all works then 'unroot' and you'll have a stock phone with a truly silent camera.

Hello, All !
I've just bought the Defy,
I work at secured site and have to disable my phone camera.
Is there any option to do this using some software with no dealing with the hardware, means not to take the camera off the phone.
Sorry, but i don't know any program that does it.
Just a contextual question: what would be the difference if you have some app to disable the camera? if you want to take any picture, wouldn't you be able to re-activate the camera?
and btw, if you don't start the camera app, i guess it is not recording anything.
Just remove the camera app from your phone with rootexplorer, make a backup of the app first (BlurCamera.apk and BlurCamera.odex if you have a non deodexed rom) so you can put them back in the future.

According to the organization policy the camera should be disabled while I'm in, but the point is being able to re-activate the camera
during the weekends or vacations.

Sorry for the beginners questions :
1. How could I get rootexplorer ? should I reinstall rom for this ?
2. What is the path for the apps (BlurCamera.apk and BlurCamera.odex)?
Thank you

First you have 2 root your phone with superoneclick (instructions somewere on this forum).
Then you download rootexplorer (search with google) to get R/W permissions on the system folder.
The Camera app is in system/app.....
can't you just cover the camera with tape or something like that perhaps place your in a case that does not have a camera place cut put or cover that up? I mean honestly unless someone gets ahold of your phone how are they gonna know if the camera is active?

After countless downloads I found a camera apk that really has a silent shutter. It's called "Super Spy Camera+" and it is made exclusively for the Galaxy S line. Not a whole lot of features, so you'll want to keep a default camera apk installed, but it's just what the doctor ordered if you want to creep on someone and stay STOCK!
Link please
Samsung Galaxy S Dos indeed

Is this program completely silent? Rooted phones can easily eliminate the shutter sound, but not the auto focus beep. Thanks.

ABSOLUTELY Silent.
No auto focus, it's a bare bones camera apk, that's why you'll want another camera apk installed for your "legit" pics. Ha Ha.
And as far as ROOT goes, every phone I had and rooted was to run a GS2 type ROM. There is nothing out there that has me excited enought to even want to root my phone right now, too many issues at the present.
Here's a modified epic touch camera apk with the sound removed. Not my work; just posting the find.

That's cool but you have to be rooted. I'm not trying to roll the dice like that until we have more developement for this phone.
Spy Camera+ will install as a second camera apk, NO ROOT, without repalcing STOCK.
Good find, too many ads though, and the + version is 2 expensive for dat simple camera... vignette works better...

Vignette won't silent shutter sounds. My Super Spy Camera+ doesn't have ads. Do you even have it to be able to make such a statement, either of them?

The method that required root worked perfectly, 100% usage of the stock camera/camcorder app but without the auto focus or shutter sounds.
Rooting is really easy, and there is a way to do it and have the stock kernel (I wouldn't have rooted otherwise).
It's stupid you can't turn off the sound through the settings though... you could on my last HTC phone.
Any chance this can happen? My old Droid Incredible could do this stock or rooted. It really comes in handy when you're trying to take pics discretely in public.
You can turn your media sounds to quiet. That's the only workaround setting at the moment. But yeah +1 to this mod/app/whatever.
if there is no app and you're rooted just move /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg to another folder when you want it silent.
i used to just delete it in my themes for the desire.
Or with tasker set it to mute volume when in the camera app, easiest automated workaround

I just turn the phone main volume down. On the side of the phone. Works for me.

Just rename it to camera_click.ogg.bak

If your phone is rooted, you can replace the audio file.
The original file can be foun in: system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg
adb root
adb remount
adb shell
mv system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg.bak
I just delete the camera_click.ogg file, been doing it that way for quite awhile. Quick and easy. Only issue is that I have to repeat this when I install new ROM.
I may be missing something obvious here, but is there a way to disable the "tap to focus" sound as well? I had no trouble disabling the "click" ogg, but none of the other files in the directory seem to be the one that the camera makes when focusing.
Protected
I have Galaxy Nexus. Not rooted. Therefore volume down does not kill the 'click' of the shutter and the file ...ogg cannot be deleted. In simple words, seems no solution to silent camera's click.
This is done to comply with US laws relating to privacy, and imposed by Samsung (or Google) worldwide... Whether we like it or not (I don't like it, btw) - is not a matter to debate in this technical forum
root or not, it works, try again

yeah, i thought it was fairly obvious...
rename/move camera_focus.ogg which is in the same location as camera_click.ogg
Deleting them works fine. I have deleted almost all of the sounds in the media folder.
The GNex's camera isn't that great for upskirt pics anyway.

There is a 'phone mods' section in my ToolKit to rename the camera/camcorder sounds. Stock Rom users are covered as the ToolKit can boot an insecure boot image to your phone to give it temporary root access and allow the files to be renamed.

That only works in 4.0.3 Roms. In earlier builds renaming or deleting the file doesnt mute the focus sound although the other sounds can still be muted.
Mark.
This app can mute the shutter and doesn't require root.

Probably because it set the sounds internally within the app itself and doesnt use the external system sounds. That way they can be enabled/disabled from within the app without needing root to rename the existing files
Shame the free version has ads in the worst possible location lol..

Works for me though on Android Revolution HD ROM on 4.0.2
Focus sound is nowhere to be seen! Not in the same directory as the shutter sound.
I am need someone who can really explain to me how to remove the stock camera shutter noise. I have the es file explorer and astro, there is nothing in my media folder. I am rooted but don't want to use a mod just to get rid of it. I have fast burst camera but just want to silence the stock camera. Please help!

good morning and welcome to xda, I see that you are a new member and will try and help you out. First off here is a link to what you requested. Secondly, may I suggest you try using all the search features available to you prior to posting. This will probably help you out a lot faster in the future. I used "silence camera epic touch" in a google search and the second choice was the link I attached. Also the search feature in xda although sometimes can be a PITA to use does come in handy at times.
I hope you accomplish your goal but if not I believe UnNameds rom which is quite a good rom I may add has the mod you are looking for... check the OP
Edit: Hopefully if you take my advice it may save you some unnecessary flaming in the future... Rule of thumb - You are not the first or the tenth person to inquire about what ever it is you want to post about.... Keep that in mind
I usually just open Root Explorer and go to system\media\audio\ui and remove camera sounds.

That only removes the shutter sounds. The focus sounds are inside the apk. Many custom Roms have a modded apk with sounds disabled. You could extract the camera from one and replace your stock camera app.

Doesn't help with the auto focus sounds. On;y with the shutter. The auto focus sounds are in the .apk so you have to use a modified version of the stock one in order to make it completely silent. See the link that was posted above you.
Most custom roms have the sounds removed anyway (well the AF anyway) so it normally not a concern. Here's a link to another silent camera. It also has edits in it for much better quality pictures (both front and back) and video. Either one will work if you're just trying to silence the sounds though.
I tried to disable the camera shutter sound but its not working.
Steps:
- Rooted the device with Odin
- Edited the other.xml <CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
The option is now available in the camera menu but always jumps back to "on"
Any ideas? Thanks :good:

Switch to a custom ROM that makes this simple. That's one sollution.
You can also find that sound file (the CLICK noise is just a sound file like any other sound file) and replace it with a blank sound. I wouldn't delete it outright because it may cause a force close if the camera tries to access the sound file and it's not there.

I renamed the .ogg files to .bak but the autofocus still makes a beep.
Do the gestures still work on a custom rom? Can you recommend me a good rom?

Gestures should work on all TouchWiz roms. They will NOT work on any AOSP ROM.
We do not recomend any ROMs on XDA. It's a big no no here. (Because any such discussion inevitably degrades into a fight over what rom is best, and there is no correct answer to that)
But if you like your rom and just want a little more control stick with TouchWiz (it has a slightly better camera than AOSP roms as the software to control the camera is better, but closed source so it can't be ported to AOSP roms). You'll find that custom TouchWiz variants are very similar to what you have now, but with A LOT more control over the UI.
Just delete the files. Obviously you're rooted so that's easy. Look at ALL the sound files in system/media/ui.
The whole build.prop edit thing is mostly a gimik for a lot of things - as you should already be able to tell from this experience. It's a pointless argument, some people will argue on their death bed that build.prop edits aren't a placebo effect for most things.
Anyway, don't do the .bak rename either. What's the point? You plan on using the click sound again? Wasted space honestly. Delete them, enjoy.
