Does anyone experience this ? my wife & I listen to internet radio (like pandora), she had a X8 (rooted) my is of course Ion. Compare the two, the sound for X8 was alot better clear and sharp bass. the Ion is just dull, a lot of white noise ? Is this because we haven't been able to unlock bootloader and rejuvenate its hardware ?

Considering pandora is streaming radio it's not a very good test...
Also make sure that one of the Pandora clients isn't set to high quality audio while the other is not.

I said this cuz I tested same song - same channel. Listening on Ion make me want to throw the phone to the wall, cuz I was just so bad. I understand the inconsistency of the streaming, however shouldn't be that much of a different. I just have to wait until getting a custom ROM.
two things..one. def do this test with a song that is of good quality and on the phone already. not streaming.
two. try tweaking the DSP manager for Phone Speaker... i listen to a lot of electronic music and i'd say i'm hearing the tracks quite beautifully with my ion
I listen to pandora a lot and think it sounds great
Sent from my Sony Xperia Ion
Overall I'm not too impressed w the ion's built-in speaker in regards to music, audio, etc (my X10 sounds better). However its pretty much what I expected from the ion's slim design, long as it's loud enough to hear ring & notification(which it is) I'm pretty much good.
I def agree streaming radio is by no means an adequate source test for fidelity but on the other hand the ion fidelity in only going to be so good unless u plug it into a more capable sorce. eb

Some where I read dsp doesn't do any good instead conflicted with the rom, but that when I was with my VIVID. Maybe i should give dsp manager a try now.
really? thats weird.. i had it on my inspire running exitz AOSP 4.03 and it worked great... works on my HTC Flyer as well.. and i DEF notice a diff when i turn it on on my ION...
I really only use the default music player on the phone and you just gotta play around with the equalizer a bit. From dubstep to screamo and everything in between I've gotten it to sound pretty damn good from the speaker. Not perfect quality, but hey, it's a phone. Anyone with something they can stream it to I'd advise that over anything though, if I wanna play it out loud I stream it to my Sony Google TV.
Yeah it is what it is so to speak. I'm good w it.
Anybody needs DSP Manager I posted it along with some other 2.3.7 apps under the "Themes & Apps" section of this forum. They all should install regularly as they did for me. eb

Yes, did used the dsp manager too. I still didn't get that good quality sound. The speaker is loud, but sound is very dull not much of bass nor treble. I felt like it got a lot of white noise - Output to speakers however is better. Maybe I just don't know how to set it up.

I just got the arc a few days ago, I absolutely love this phone except for one really annoying problem I have with it. The volume of music when listenning through earphones. My iphone could go much louder.
I have since tried different earphones and downloaded a few volume boosting Apps, and nothing changes. The Apps do absolutely noyhing.
I have searched to see if there are others who find this same problem. I seem to be the only one, I suppose my ears are shot. Is there any way to get the volume to go higher or am I stuck with this? Thanks.
Mate, if you actually gave the thread a proper title rather than " [Q] ", more people would be willing to help you; especially those who know the answer.
With regards to your problem, I'm sorry but I don't have the solution to that.
Cheers!

Bro, you got some problem with your ear...not with the phone or headphones . Most of the reviews I read says that Arc has one of the best volumes for music.
Checkout the gsmarena website, they have one of the cleanest I guess and change your topic.

As I said in my original post, my Iphone could go louder and was much more enjoyable. I'm disappointed that the volume can't be increased even with the help of apps.
I've also noticed that when using PowerAMP and adjusting the EQ to a preset setting, they all lower the volume even more so. I can't even change my EQ to Dance, or Rock without losing more volume.
Thanks for the help.

I never used an iPhone, but I'm pretty sure that Arc has one of the best audio capabilities. I use bluetooth to listen to music (MW600) and I don't leave that in full volume sine my ear can't take it. My volume is always 1/2 to 3/4 only!
If you are experiencing issues, then I better advise you get your phone exchanged if possible or repaired. But I'm not sure how your comparison is done and not sure what will be result after you repair or get another piece.
I'm using CX300 II and my arc give me great sound quality, I have iPod nano gen 5 too for my comparison. Volume with CX300 I always set it to 1/4 as it loud enough for me.
lol i too think the problem is with your ears not the arc, or you have a faulty one? i think the arc has one of the best audio quality and i had the iphone 4 too....
Probably a faulty device. Try exchanging it and test out the audio quality at the store itself before bringing it back home.
my question is the limit !! can it be increased ? i usually like loud music and for me the limit is a bit low .
if the limit is too low then you seriously have hearing problems. Must be all the loud music

You're not reading the advice.. The arc volume is loud.. if your device is not loud then you have a faulty device.
I got my new ARC today, hurray (sweet silvery mist)!!
Honestly, the sound quality is very good. But it feels like that there could be one or two more steps on the volume controll to increse the loudness, atleast with the supplied in-ear headphones.
Some music plays lower and some higher i dont know maybe ur musics?

I've noticed this too. It's kind of shocking to see the amount of people jumping to conclusions here....
I got around it by using 'PowerAmp', and using the PreAmp function located under Equalizer settings.
I'd say that it's some kind of volume limiter (I think UK commonly has some kind of Volume Limitations on devices; my device is from the UK).

Probably a volume limiter, but its not an UK idea. What I remember from before (2007) when I had a SE P1i, it was France that had som EU regulation issues about volume on mobiles.
So SE decided to implement it on all new devices worldwide, not to get insurance "hearing problem" claims.
But its just a guess...
Ps. My SE P1i was a brown/engineer model (impossible to flash without hardware tools aka EPROM, so I bricked it totally once one day after modding too much).
just came from this thread then finally go to this page.

I use Power amp to play my music. Its available on the market, you can really control the volume on your music and is much better than the music player that comes with the phone.
You will need these three apps
Voodoo LOUDER, speakerboost, and volume boost. All of which can be found in the play store or app store, whatever you call it. If you already brought Voodoo LOUDER like I did great! If not well you will needs it. For volume boost, there are two versions of the app, the 7 days trail version and the full paid version. Both work great but of coarse with the trail version you have 7 days of use. Spearkerboost is completely free by the way.
Step 1. Launch voodoo LOUDER, follow what the app tells you to do and once everything is set. Do the following.
Limit > Maximum Boost > +6 dB
Next got to slider set the volume to +6 dB.
Step 2. Launch volume boost go to setting and check Auto start.
Step 3. Launch speaketboost got setting > maximum allowed boost > 100% then check everything else on the settings screen.
Step 4. Play your music.
Issues:
The paid version of volume boost will seem to be low at first, simply lower the phone volume and bring it back up.
Speaketboost goes on and off sometimes.
Disclaimer: If you damage your ears, it wasn't my fault.
Is this really necessary? Is the sound that low for some of you? I didn't notice any issues for me on. AOSP or PA. Aren't you afraid you are going to blow your speaker with these extreme settings? I would be a little concerned.
I believe I experienced a little bit of an issue in Skype but I wasn't sure if it was Skype's issue. I have used some of these apps in the past but it would also boost ring tones which I am not to fond of. I currently use SpeakerBoost on a low setting and it seems to be fine for me.
Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Its really about the headphones not speakers. And yes for some of us its that low.

Indeed, I also found that the sound coming from the headset jack was too low for my tastes. Using Power Amp, there are settings (or rather a preamp) that allows for the volume to be increased but at the cost of major sound degradation. Bass becomes distorted, overall sound is blown out.
I'd be afraid that these apps might do the same? I wanted to try Voodoo sound on my last JB attempt but unfortunately the kernel wouldn't allow it.
I'm too cheap for the paid version...
while a workaround, it isnt a very good one, the sound out the headphones is very, very crappy. so crappy that i have been dealing with the low volume. you can say "is the sound out the headphone jack that big of an issue" but i didnt pay $150 for my headphones to listen to classical crap that would be best at low volumes.
thankfully i paid for power amp, which helps the issue a bit, but not much. by far the best music player for people who know how to tweak an equalizer

I'll take your jab as a playful one...
Regardless of your taste in music, all should be able to be played at ear melting levels without degradation of quality or distortion of sound. I think about all the clubs I've DJed over the past 12 years and how some of the best systems were the ones that didn't need sheer power to sound good. Clean sound is not necessarily loud sound.
That said, it remains that there is something in the way JB is talking to the audio chip that is not allowing for power AND clean sound to come through. This is why I've stuck with ICS running Power Amp. Until this issue can be fixed, I just can't use JB.
And if I'd paid $150 for some headphones, I'd be expecting some good, clean and LOUD sound as well...

Are you using the headphone jack to listen to music? I've tried it on 3 different music players, apollo, google music and double twist. They are all quiet. I can usually have my radio on 30 and its plenty loud but now I've got to turn it up to 40 (maxed out on my radio) and it still isn't loud enough. It doesn't help I have a loud car to begin with, borderline race car.

I have to say that when listening music with Poweramp+Senheiser CX300II the quality is good...but not as good as it was with Xperia ARC with the same combination.
Once u connect the earphones on the ARC, even without setting the proper parameters on the music player, u can notice it is going to be good, i´ve been trying different setups (and even different music players) to get the same quality in my ZL and i just gave up, it can´t be done.
I´m now in .253, before that i was root and tryid the Acid Audio Mod, it got better, but not as good as i was hoping.
I think i will try the PureXAudio Mod once it´s avalaible for .253 to see how the ZL manages the sound with that, but at the end of the day these are temporary solutions, it´is indeed a problem of hardware.
Obviously, the ZL sounds good, but i was expecting a bit more for a smartphone worth this kind of money.
Since it uses a Qualcomm chip i guess the DAC is WCD9310, i was really expecting more from Sony in this area, yet again, it is good, but it can be better, should it be given that this phone is its current flagship, and it should be better than the rest of Sony phones in every area, "the best of Sony in a smartphone" they say...
I have to agree. I had an Arc a while ago too and it sounded much better. My last phone before this was an Xperia U and it sounded much better than the ZL too, not only with earphones, but using the speaker too..

I had a weird issue with my ARC, i had the USB port repaired, and they gave me the phone back i couldn´t use any headphone at all, got the "accesorie not supported" message, only the stock ones worked, it didn´t happen before.
I´m going to take the phone back because i think they had to mess around with the headphone jack some way, i used the phone for a year and a half and never happened before.
However I connected my Senheiser CX 300 II via Bluetooth on my MW600 set, and man, what a difference, that is pure amazing sound quality, ZL lacks of the same quality.
I wonder why Sony doesn´t take care of these things, the best of Sony in a Smartphone ...not true at all.

So am I the only one who thinks the internal speaker is too low? I can barely hear my phone calls..or maybe mine is defective?
Unfortunately I had to switch my Arc for ZL as well.. it was too old now.
But comparing them, it's not only the sound quality that is worse, but also the screen brightness, the design, the camera.
Honestly, the only improvement I see in ZL is the internal storage and processing power. I wish I could have my old Arc with ZL's CPU,GPU and memory

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2243207
Anyone else disappointed in the volume levels?
Quite honestly my ringtones are deafening but when I open up Play Music it really isn't all that loud and I really was expecting more.
I've always noticed that Play Music was lower-quality and more compressed sounding than comparable services like Spotify. Try loading up a high-quality MP3 on your phone and use a media player, I think you will see the difference is night and day.
I took your advice, I'm not so sure that made much of a difference.
I grabbed a file from my Dropbox of one of the artists I mix/master for which was 320kbps, played it in the HTC Music player instead of Play Music and it wasn't much different.
That is what you suggested, correct?
Yeah. Not sure why it seems underwhelming for you then. I just turned my volume to 100% and it was crazy loud, and I don't have the best hearing.
I may visit my store today and try their demo unit to see what I think because it really is quite disappointing.
It's loud, don't get me wrong. it's just not LOUD like I expected it to be.
just a quick question - what did you EXPECT? When you watch a youtube video, you also have to keep in mind that your speakers are probably ALREADY outputting at their own volume level. so you arent actually hearing how loud the boomsound is yourself. I think mine are extremely loud, but I'm basing it off of the sound I hear from other phones, not the sound I heard when watching all of the video reviews.
And my first line isnt in any way meant to sound rude. I'm just honestly asking what you were expecting so we can get a better look at whether the speakers are actually quiet, or if you just thought they'd be louder

No offense taken whatsoever. Honestly, I've had every top tier phone imaginable from Verizon. (perks of being a store manager for a indirect retailer)
I'd say that the volume levels are about on par with the others, just blown in a different direction. I mean with a name like "BoomSound" I guess I expected them to be quite a bit louder. It's really no louder than the S4 I just got rid of a couple of days ago. Quality is great, volume not so much.
yeah if its 'on-par' with the others then there's something wrong. I just startled my mom down the hall playing music on google play at max volume...not even kidding
Well when my girlfriend wakes her ass up I'll play the same song, same app, from her iPhone 5 at the same time and give it a good comparison, maybe I'll even try to do a video with my DSLR
Mine is very loud. Almost as good as a cheap Bluetooth speaker. Sounds like your mp3 files may have been recorded at low volume.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
No that's far from the problem, I think. I've tried my own tracks (I have Pro Tools and all that jazz). I've tried streaming. I've tried YouTube. I've tried just about everything I can think of. They're not that loud.
After looking at that thread, I can confirm that the volume doesn't change much if at all after 50%, which is weird. I guess it doesn't really bother me though, since I mostly use headphones. After doing some reading, seems like most people are saying the phone's volume is comparable to other phones, but louder in noisier places due to the boosted mids brought on by Beats Audio.

i can definitely tell you there is a difference between volume level - even above 50%
Something is wrong I think...
I agree. I played a song at 50% then cranked it up, it definitely got louder. Still not what I think it should be. I'm saving down a real quick clip that I did that will show it. In the video, it doesn't really prove my point much but in person there is next to no difference.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
I'll see if I can record a video as well of mine for you to compare.
I might go up to the Verizon store later to compare it with their display model. If there is a difference, I will definitely exchange it before waiting to see if 4.3 addresses any of the problems. On mine, the speaker volume doesn't really reflect noticeable change between 50-100% unless you really listen for it.
I use PowerAmp and this thing is very loud and sounds great. It isn't a home stereo system but it is very very good.
I realize that I probably should have recorded them playing separately for the video to better prove my point, but here's the little video that I did.

Does anyone know a kernel that provides good non muffled, clear sound if not too loud, on phone speakers.. Not for earphones..I have tried Purecaf(really bad for phone speakers, too distorted sound), KangarooX 4.3/4.4 nonOC... Mods like Dolby and V4A dont really help much in clearing the sound for phone speakers, earphones r different story
Kernels won't give you magically HiFi sound, I'm pretty sure u can't get over 48Khz sample rate or a lower SNR etc. Loudspeaker is as is, try to use EQ on it. I have viper4android and it's prob the best u can get. Dolby/Dts is worse imo...
U can reduce distortion by reducing gain, but that makes it quieter. After all it's a small Speaker and a budget phone.

Yeah i dont want hifi quality or such, ik kernels dont, i just wanna reduce distortion, idk how to configuration v4a that much to reduce distortion properly, tried all profiles, still distortion is there, at this point, i dont mind quiter sound if its not distorted, KangarooX has a little bit less distorted sound than purecaf, but not by that much, n i lose on battery backup too if i switch to kangaroox.. U know any balanced version of these 2 kernels that offers less sound gain n like atleast 6-7 hr sot
