Hello,
I have been trying out some GB roms lately and during the testing i saw that the compass was not showing north anymore.
If i turn the phone a little, the compass is swaying somewhere between NE and NW, but it never points north.
So i went back to FroYo roms, but now i have it there also.
I have been reading several messages fro different GB roms that people are having the same problem.
I also used the recommended radio's for the GB roms.
Since my AuraxTSense (FroYo) rom now also has this problem, it looks like a radio problem.
Can someone confirm this problem and tell me the solution or tell me the radio that is working?
Eric
Edit: See my post on page 2. There is a snq kernel fix for this problem.
Well, i have been testing some further.
Radios (old or new) make no difference.
Froyo rom (Aurax 8.4) and recalibrating the compass the old way, did make it work again.
Installing a new rom (GingerBread that is) and everything was wrong again. The radio version did not make any difference.
So i'm going back to Aurax and hope that i can recalibrate it again to let it work.
For other's with this problem:
Try the old way of calibrating the compass.
Make at least 2 figures 8, but do it slowly. It should take at least 2 seconds for every 8 you make.
Then turn the phone around 360 degrees along the length axe of the phone, also at least 2 times and 2 seconds per turn
Then turn 360 degrees along the sides axe (width), also at least 2 times and 2 seconds per turn.
If this did not work, repeat the last 2 ways of turning (length and width axe) but do it faster and about 6 to 8 times per direction.
This worked for me (and i hope it will work again in a few minutes).
Eric
Looks like North is up and South is down. The compass is now a "bubble" app.

I read a few days back that some Chinese Rom's had fixed it (HiAPK or something like that), but i just read that they also still have this problem.
So i will have to wait untill this is really fixed, because i need the compass for finding directions etc.
it seems to be a general gingerbread problem, other devices are affected too:

It is a general Ginger problem..we can nothing do about it but...waiting for fix
I opened a bug report on android's bug tracker, I encourage everyone who has this issue to confirm it so it will be fixed.

I added my comments also.

supposedly this fixes the problem on GbB as well but I havent tried it yet and don't feel much like flashing a GB rom and having to go back again to froyo if ot doesnt work:

In the RCmix S thread there was somebody who had tried it.
In GB most of the files are not found.
The fix is for Froyo and not GB.
The guy (i think) reported that it did not work at all.
We will have to wait for some other solution.

Compass fixed with new kernel
Since yesterday there is a fix for the Compass problem in the GB rom's
It is a new kernel from snq and works for (at least) most GB rom's and probably all GB rom's.
I have not had time to try it, but in most rom threads there are people who have tried it and it works!!!!!
The fix can be found here:

Working on Nexus S
Hello,
is this fix working on Nexus S, too?
So, is this fix going to be incorporated into the official Acer releases (prob not)?
I guess we have to root and flash after market roms to fix their fubars...
Having seen so many people with gps probs on the last few roms i've had and most can not be bothered to read a few pages back when i've posted something,i've decided to create a thread(apologise if there's something like it elsewhere) with a fix for some and improvements for others.I've tried this with 8 people and all have been successful and happy. It aint 100% and christmas aint come early, but if you don't have ago, you'll never know.Sometimes it's the rom or the area you live or more than likely the way you flashed the rom that causes the gps probs. My findings is that your phone finds more sattelites and the accuracy in feet is more accurate and ever since i've done this on my last 6 roms,i've had 3 or 4 bars signal as to the usual none i've been getting.I don't wanna here it's in the wrong forum or anything like that as it aint a theme or app,it aint general,it aint a question,it's quite common on alot of rom so i've put it in the rom thread on purpose
I'd love for some people to have ago for me and test it for me and report there results(if any),all positive or negative posts welcome
use root explorer or something like it of your choice and go to system/etc/gps.conf,long press and choose open in text editor and add this to the bottom........
GPS1_CLEANUP_ENABLED=0
GPS1_XTRA_AUTO_DOWNLOAD_ENABLED=1
GPS1_XTRA_DOWNLOAD_INTERVAL=24
GPS1_SESSION_TIMEOUT=2
you only have to add GPS1_CLEANUP_ENABLED=0,but people have added all 4
then save then delete gps.conf.bak and reboot AND ENJOY
EDIT: forgot to mention that you should edit the top line with the area you live.......
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
I've changed mine to NTP_SERVER=uk.pool.ntp.org as i live in uk lol
Thank you for your work. Test
And brush2 repair methods in the post as...

i've tried it but i had a few bugs, maybe others didn't but i did, also my fix(attempt) is an easy straight forward thing to try, loadsa people don't like flashing things such as kernels etc or to be honest, they can't be bothered cos they'll do something wrong and get nand kernel open failed more than likely,i see your link is worth looking at,but i did look at it 2 months ago lol and it aint compatible with every rom(be aware of that)so there is need for this, maybe not for yourself, that's fair enough, but my fix aint just for yourself is it,but as i origionally posted,TRY IT,THEN KNOCK IT,THAT'S ALL I ASK

This is for Tytung's GPS libraries that you quote. Even Tytung has mentioned these values on this thread
Tytung said:
Some ROMs suffer from the "GPS off-and-on" bug.
Those ROMs can shutdown the gpsOne engine properly when turning off GPS setting using gps_cleanup(), but they cannot restart the gpsOne engine again because gps_init() is never called when turning GPS setting on after turning it off.
It's a Gingerbread bug which is fixed by applying this commit from the source code.
If you cannot modify the source code, the workaround is to set/add GPS1_CLEANUP_ENABLED=0 into gps.conf to avoid doing full cleanup.

im aware of this, all i have done is put this fix in simple terms as alot of ppl aren't the best with flashin and fixes or don't do it right and the developer doesn't get the credit they deserve cos ppl can't or don't read and follow instructions properly........SO SHOOT ME FOR TRYIN TO SIMPLIFY AND MAKE THINGS EASIER FOR OTHERS

Hey, I said that in response to the earlier post, not on the thread as general.
Actually I like this thread spreading awareness. Keep up the good work, but please refer everybody to tytungs thread also as most of the chefs are using these libraries.
I did not come up with this fix. I just read it in a thread and posted an individual thread for it. Thanks to whoever originally found this!
Download:
Fasterfix: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5Eb3VibGUuRmFzdGVyRml4Il0.
GpsFix: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hbmRyb2lkbGFiLmdwc2ZpeCJd
Now run fasterfix and choose your location. Now open GpsFix and let it get a fix. This works best outside. Now it should be fixed.

Sadly it doesn't help..
Tried this process.. the fasterfix allows me to change the server to Asia server.
GPSFIX tries to lock the fix, but can only find 4 satellites within the 15 minutes timeout, and it seems its not enough for a fix.
Might be the CM9 based rom I'm using
This worked on an older rom for me and I haven't lost quick gps lock through numerous roms. Ibdid have to go outside and do gps fix twice, but after it locked its been quick lock through 20+ rom flashes since. Some people have said it worked form them and some it didn't work for. You might be one of the unlucky ones.

Thanks for the posts. Running Calkulin's ICS. I tried the methods above and also the ones cited on the forum where you push a file to /System/lib/hd. I changed the permissions as required. Still, no lock. Worked fine on GB.
Anyway, thanks for the posts and knowing that right now for some folks, it just doesn't work.

I got it working. I found a post later that pointed to two apps that, when applied in order, made it work. They are, in order,
FasterFix
GpsFix
I ran each app, in order. The second one took a fee minutes.
Hope this helps.
Mike
I downloaded the FasterFix last night, changed the server location to North America. Then I ran the GPS Status app (available on the market) and got very quick locks on 10 satellites. I just installed the Blu Kuban Rom yesterday and wanted to make sure I was getting GPS to work. Good luck.
A+ for the info
Worked on my infuse running ics. Thanks.
I have flashed Blackout ICS Incredible v3.0 this morning, every thing goes well expect FMradio.
When I try to use FM,it just tells me that I need to insert the headset even I have done that.
I wonder whether that is an universal phenomenon,or it is just my problem?

forgive me if anyone has ever mention this before
be greatly appreciated if someone can give me some pointers of this issue.
Haven't tried the radio since I don't use it that much (froze it with titanium) to reduce the amount of start up apps.
Found portable hotspot to be a problem-> start it up and it would be an unprotected connection even though it is set for a password. Shutting it off afterwards will not allow WIFI to start up unless I reboot.
Yes, I had the same problem with Wifi hotspot. Connected only once and afterwards even after reboot it refused to work... I also had problems with some widgets, ie my favorite Folder Organizer which is crucial to me doesn't display 5 icons in a row, only 4 so icons don't fit. Really strange, since FO worked fine with every other ROM I have tried (even ICS one)

I read somewhere that a ROM's RIL interfaces with the phone's radio (Baseband). Our problem might be with that.
