The ROM I'm using on my Incredible 2 will only provide a wifi hotspot via an ad hoc network, but my rooted Kindle Fire (ICS) will not connect. I've researched but can't find a solution. Any ideas?? Thanks for your help.

I've used wifi tether beta, but I'm trying to connect to an ad-hoc network from my computer. I cannot use infrastructure mode. CM10 Roms do not seem to like ad-hoc networks (at least when created by a desktop).
Thanks for the suggestion though.

AD HOC WiFI in Jellybean with rom 1.8.2
I have successfully installed Kindle fire jelly Bean 1.8.2 .
I refer to f1259 in JANDYCANE development forum.

After I click "wifi direct", KF shows "searching device..." in 5 seconds, and my KF reboots automatically. I tried several times with same result. I reinstalled rom and reinstalled Gapps, no change.
The whole new Jandycane Rom 1.8.2 is wonderful.
I have a Nokia E71 with JOIKUSPOT 3.2 ad hoc mounted.
Using a Google play sourced app "BARNACLE" I cannot 3G connect , but know the Ad-Hoc features in Jellybean on branded phones works, I am keen to see this feature work in the new ROM in tablet form.
I should add I have a very stable WiFi connect in infrastructure mode to my office router or neighborhood Hot spots.
Any one doing work in this ad hoc area area?
Thanks in anticipation. The work of this community is truly awesome!

Same thing happens me with Kindle. I'm using the CM10/SGT7 ROM. It sees my phone but I cannot connect. After a few seconds, my Kindle reboots. I've tried 3 times but same thing every time.

Hi,
I have been trying to connect my Fire to my tethered connection (I have a Motorola Backflip with CM7).
I tried setting up infrastructure mode tethering but it seems that is unsupported by my phone (http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/35365-wifi-tethering-problem/)
Now I'm trying the other way around, enabling connections to an ad-hoc network from the Fire. I tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353322
But it didn't do anything.
Any ideas of an alternate method? or if this will be even possible (is the hardware capable and it's only a matter of time before someone finds a work-around?).
Thanks!
There's no developer published wpa_supplicant replacement for Kindle Fire's system/bin/wpa_supplicant till now.
So I find ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk is so well to switch Kindle Fire to support Kindle Fire

A lot of ways to setuo WiFi hotspot with laptop, but Bzeek is the most useful one and it supports both Win XP and Vista.
Bzeek(supports XP & Win7)
http://www.bzeek.com/static/index.html
download:
http://www.bzeek.com/static/bzeekPlugin/bzeekPlugin-setup.exe
I met a problem with Bzeek as well as lots of guys met that after restart the Windows, Bzeek is alway Off instead of On, even you can't turn it On.
So I check google and found that
Personal Hotspot Status
Your Personal Hotspot is Off
Some of the Bzeek settings are not yet in effect. Please restart your computer for the Bzeek settings to take effect. If the problem persists, please contact Bzeek for support.

Maybe the Bzeek service is not running for some reason on your machine.
If it is not solved after boot you can run services.msc and make sure the bzeek service is running.

It's a BUG for Bzeek due to their lack of maintance?
So manually if you like, you should go to
Start > Run > services.msc
Open Windows System Services
Get Bzeek Service and make it START
For easy use I build .bat file to TURN ON or TURN OFF Bzeek Free WiFi service effeciently. You can download them here

Install ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk
Before running it you'd better ROOT your Kindle Fire for higher user ability.
Run ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher
You should see Switch to Infrastructure mode / Switch to Ad-hoc mode button.
Click Switch to Infrastructure mode and it turns to Switch to Ad-hoc mode then you can click Settings button to set SSID and WEP password if possible.
I put into Bzeek Free WiFi as SSID as I'm using Bzeek and WEP is not selected for Bzeek. If you use other name and with WEP, just do your way.
Now the button display Switch to Ad-hoc mode, just click it and turn it to
Ad-hoc Mode, click Enable WiFi button and it will connect to Bzeek Free WiFi rapidly
Then it will ask you put in your Bzeek username and password, finally you can share the internet with WiFi Ad-Hoc from your laptop happily!
I post this method to a Chinese forum and you can check screenshot images and download links there better.

Succeeded to connect to any Ad-hoc
The method can be shorten as below
1. Go find ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk , just google it, there will be several links.
2. Install the apk on a rooted KF.
3. Open it, tap settings before switch to Ad-hoc Mode
4. Input the SSID of the Ad-hoc WIFI you want to connect to. Also fill WEP (if needed) area.
5. Switch to Ad-hoc Mode. Wait a minute and you'll find your KF is connected to the Ad-hoc specified above.
There will be a "x" on KF's WIFI mark, but it doesn't matter, the ad-hoc link is working.
I tested connecting to my PSP, iPhone, Laptop(win7, ad-hoc wizard provided by OS), so I think it support all kind of Ad-hoc. Did a ping test to iPhone and Laptop for confirming. Ping works, so I think it should work fine.
P.S.
Seems it has nothing to do with Bzeek. Just use any ad-hoc.
Nice. Thanks for sharing this!
Does it have to be rooted? Has anyone tried unrooted?
Thanks PenDave.. Been working on this for 2 days, I had zt-180 on my phone (did'nt work).. Tried your methode and SUCCESSSSSS,,,
Nice tip, works great!
Finally able to connect to my KF to my OG Droid running Wifi Tether. All this time I thought it was a kernel problem.
Only problem I'm having is reconnecting to my KF to regular WiFi. I turned on "Infrastructure Mode", tried rebooting. Seems radio is stuck in "Ad-Hoc mode" now. Any ideas?
EDIT: After spending hours with "adb shell" to route out the problem, a "router reboot" fixed my connectivity problem. Nothing like that fresh noob feeling!
Can't get a connection between my HTC Inspire HD and my KF. Apparently ZT180 only supported WEP, so I tried turning security off entirely and still no connection. The KF wireless dialog says 'attempting' over and over but no dice. Any thoughts? Do I have to do something to my phone too?
You may have to reinstall the binary config in wifi tether on your phone, available in the menu option on the app main screen.
Has anyone found a way to connect the Kindle Fire to ad-hoc mode WITHOUT having to root?
Check out this post. My KF is rooted, my Inspire HD is not.

Unfortunately we have to use ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk on the kindle (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375528
see that link for info, post #2 is the simple answer.
But then we can't use Amazon Video in root mode...still looking for a way to switch to ad-hoc without being rooted...anyone?
let it rooted - use ota rootkeeper from the market - temporary unroot - force close amazon video from applications - start amazon video again
@B63:
This morning I have been noticing that Wi-Fi connection has full strength connected to an access point, but has X next to it. Able to surf the internet, open IMDb and watch trailers, get updated for my location showing theaters near my location. Google maps show my location and Android Weather able to update location and weather. Lot more apps that require internet connection are responding quickly. The adhoc switcher is not running. The X sign will not go away in spite of rebooting KF and Access Point few times. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks
had this with adhoc switcher to my work laptop - but every connection worked fine, so i did'nt care
thaught that it's because of some closed ports on our proxy
maybe the hotspot you used has also some closed ports
Hi
Hi, Ive installed the adhoc switcher.
But when i open the app, it says "ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher is not responding. Would you like to close it?" Choose "Wait" or "OK".
Is it not compatible with this Kindle FIre?

Btw im using this ROM \

From my experience ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher won't work with ICS ROMs. I have tried on multiple versions (Energy, Reloaded, MIUI).
I found this a few minutes ago because I'm having the same problems (I have a Nokia E71 with Joikuspot as well). Will try this out tonight when I get some free time.

I see. Im new to android, this is my 1st experience using android platform. I have posted in my ROM thread asking about this but there isnt any reply. I thought that this ROM can run adhoc connection as stated from the 1st page of the ROM thread. Hope can get this adhoc connection worked as ive got no other source of getting online other than from my phone
I can confirm that the Galaxy Note wap-supplication doesn't work with the KF.
I am, like others here having problems using ZT-180.
Kindle Fire 7" HD rooted.
ZT-180 will open (though I do receive the error in attached screenshot), and I can enter the SSID of the my network.
I enter the SSID of the network that is being broadcast by my Android mobile phone, and I switch the Ad-hoc mode.
Once I do so, the internet connection is disable on the Kindle and it does not connect to my broadcasted ad-hoc network.
Has anyone had luck specifically using ZT-180 to connect to an ad-hoc being broadcast from their Android mobile phone? Is there a step or a setting that I may be missing? All that I have done on the Kindle is a) download ZT-180 , b) enter SSID of network , c) switch to ad-hoc .
Thanks.
Dear all,
I have tried installing three of the most famous mods here, being Hell, Energy and Reloaded, and I have the same exact problem with all, my wireless router does not appear in the scan list.
Weird as it is, when I flashed the GR8 modded 6.3 stock rom, it started detecting my wireless router again. It is important to note that my neighbor's router appears just fine on all mods, but my DLink DIR-655 doesn't appear at all.
My laptop, ipad 2 and ps3 are all connected to it, just not the KF when any non-stock rom is installed.
Any work around to this? Please advise.
if you are getting other wifi's to show up, then it's probably some sort of issue with your router. Try changing the channel. Perhaps also you have turned off broadcasting for new devices at some point ?

Before you get to far try flashing a different rom anything that's gr8 and modded isn't stock lol fashioned after stock but nonetheless not stock you can also try adding the network through advanced options or rebooting your router so it becomes recognizable again
ditto
Has your issue been resolved because I have the same exact problem. When i first got my kindle it recognized my network but after being rooted and trying several roms it does not see my network. My laptop / xbox / roku / phone all see my network but the kindle does not. I see all my neighbors networks. Please let me know if you came across a fix for this. Thanks.
Jon
I also have problems connecting to some wifi networks on ICS builds. However, I was able to connect to those with CM7 builds.
My work around thus far was downloading an app called Connectify and installing it on my laptop. It creates a wireless hotspot with my existing wireless network. Surprisingly the kf connects to the hotspot.

Ever find a fix for this? I'm having the same problem.
I have an old Windows Mobile 6.5 phone (Touch Pro 2). I have an app that allows it to run as a wifi hotspot (install file is called mobilewifirouter.cab).
Other devices connect to the hotspot fine, but the kindle just doesn't see it... even when they're right next to each other. Otherwise the kindle wifi works ok.
Is there any way I can get this going? It's tedious having to constantly consider wifi availability when I'm travelling with it. Maybe the KF doesn't see anything using a very old 802.11 standard?
ad-hoc vs infrastructure
I think the issue is the phone itself. Or rather, the chip/radio only being able to broadcast on ad-hoc which the KF (and other new 'droid devices) doesn't support. I used the same wifi manager you did, same results...
I have a ATT Tilt 2, btw
I guess I have the same problem:
I'm trying to have my lg p500 (android 2.2.1) working as a wifi hotspot and access it from my galaxy tab (3.2) but I can't never "see" my network from it.
Other devices (laptop, nokia E71) can connect, but not the galaxy tab.
Galaxy tab can connect to other wifi networks, but not the one I create in my phone with "Wifi Thether" app.
Any workaround to fix this?
Thanks,
João
I think WM6.5 wifi router software uses Adhoc mode for wifi rather than infrastructure mode. Android cannot connect to adhoc wifi network unless you have a modified WPA supplicant file (which can make your android device unstable).
Kindle Fire and many smartphones/tables cannot connect to the internet via ad-hoc.
Use Connectify software to create a access point from your laptop.
It's a problem that is corrected easily, all you need is ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher. It works, VERY well.

If you are on Stock ROM and rooted, this is perfect
But, if you are on a CM9 ROM(unsure about others), there is no ad-hoc support yet...

He didn't really say if he was using stock or not. I just posted what I know works. If it is wrong for him/her, then I am wrong!
I tried the app on CM9 ROM's, it doesn't play friendly...
For anyone else who searched this thread and they're trying to connect to an android phone... just wanted to recommend FoxFi. I tried several other apps and they all failed (probably due to some quirk of the Kindle Fire's, everyone's recommending these apps). But FoxFi got the job done. But only if you run it without a password. If you're fed up trying to make the kindle connect to your phone, try it.

the problem here is that KF running CM9 or CM10 cant connect to an adhoc wifi yet, not the problem of the phone.
I've searched several threads, and tried asking the KF forum, but had no luck figuring out what's wrong.
Both devices definitely 100% rooted with superuser working fine, permissions granted for all apps.
I installed wifi_tether_v3_1-beta14.apk on the phone. Here are the settings:
Device Profile: Evo 4G
Setup-Method: Initially I tried Softap (master).
That's the same as infrastructure mode, correct?
Default SSID (AndroidTether)
MSS Clamping checked
Routing Fix checked
If I try to run it with these settings, I get a popup informing me the wifi hotspot started, but with errors. No devices (PC, kindle, etc.) can see it.
If I switch Setup-Method to Ad-hoc, it runs fine, no errors, PC can see it and connect to it. But KF can't connect to Ad-hoc... so lame.
So, I got ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk for the kindle fire, to switch it to ad-hoc mode. Went to settings, told it to connect to AndroidTether. Switched to Ad-Hoc mode. It says "attempting to connect" ... after a minute it gives up and keeps retrying. The hotspot shows in the list of wifi networks, but it's hanging at "Obtaining IP address".
So, what's the issue? Infrastructure mode not working? Need to flash a custom rom? I read something about maybe needing a non-stock kernel? Upgrade or downgrade my radio?
I finally found a method that works, barely.
Wifi Tether (app listed above) failed.
Adhoc Switcher failed.
Wifi Hotspot Widget failed.
Elixir2's hotspot widget failed (connected but no surf).
The one that worked is free and doesn't even need root apparently: Foxfi.
I say it "barely" worked because even this has issues.
When I tried to create a password, it wouldn't connect.
But if I leave the password blank (no password) it does work.
http://foxfi.com/bin/
I just told it to start running, and left the SSID at the default (FoxFi98 I believe).

Most f those other apps are using adhoc s which the kindle fire so t notice. What worked for me was to use the built in features of a custom ROM cm9 worked well for me using WiFi tethering and Bluetooth. In fact when I was using CM9 the data speeds were pretty much the same on the tablet and phone. It was real easy too just pulled down the notification tray and presses the toggle for WiFi AP every time after the initial setup.

Installed FoxFi from their website on my HTC EVO 3d. When I ran it, it told me that it was unable to run on HTC phones due to a Hotspot lock and advised me to use bluetooth instead. There is no bluetooth option on my Kindle Fire. I have tried several WIFI tethering apps all with no luck.:crying:
Basically what I'm trying to do is have my Kindle Fire (1st gen) connected to my wifi and then tether that to my desktop using usb. (My desktop is having problems with wifi adapters reconnecting to the network after I shutdown my PC. I've tried 3 different wifi dongles and all have the same issue across clean installs of Win 7 & 8. The only solution I have now is to use my laptop and route the wifi through the ethernet to my desktop which is a big waste of power, so if anyone has any ideas what that problem could be I'd be open to hearing it.) I've done it before when I used to have a Samsung Mesmerize using android's built in tethering app on, I believe it was, AOKP. However after trying more roms than I can remember I haven't found one for my Kindle that has the tethering enabled. I've tried several different apps from the Play store but none of them create a good stable connection like the stock app that I used previously. So is there any way to re-enable the android tethering on any rom for the Kindle? I just tried SmoothROM 1.7 so that is what I currently have installed, but I'd be willing to go to just about any rom that would have tethering in it.

clockworkmod tether app will do exactly what you want. im a linux guy so i ve not tried it on windows but it works just fine. runs a little slow through the kindle fire though, more powerful devices will probably be a little faster.
