Ghost Touches - HTC One X

These ghost touches happen quite often and render the device unusable. They last for several minutes and don't seem to have any apparent trigger. I've tried searching for people with a similar problem have been unsuccessful maybe due to lack of a way to describe what's happening.
I managed to grab a video on my girlfriends One X in the dead of night to better illustrate the problem. The phantom touches are always in the same location on the Y Axis but vary on the X Axis.
Any information or solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom.

I can't see the video (work blocks it)...what are you doing when the phantom touches happen...
It may be a silly question...have you ran the oboard diag tests??

That looks bad. Have you tried factory resetting so you can get the phones default screen calibration back? You might want to call HTC Tech Support too if that doesn't work.

Mine did the same thing when I got it wet. Not to say yours got wet, but my HOX got wet while I was at the beach from a wet towel " driving home". Did yours get near any wet areas?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I had the same problem with my last HOX, in the beginning pretty seldom but later it became nearly permanent. I was able to trigger it by pushing slightly harder in the upper right corner. A factory reset didn't bring anything, so i brought it back to the vodafone store.
I suppose this error occurs due to generally hard pressure on the touchscreen (like sitting on it, wearing tight pants and kneeing down, ...)

I'm affraid this is a touch hardware failure...

@Op,
Nothing ghosty about it and lucky you it's no hardware failure.
It has been mentioned before on the board as well.
Go into Settings/Developer options and un tick 'show touches'
Cheers.

Kinda, A bird got a pretty good shot with it's.. ahem, excrement the other day. It landed half on the one x half on my hand. I wiped it off straight away and figured the polycarbonate body would have managed to keep it safe.

By any chance this isn't happening with charger plugged inside right? Because similar has been reported quite few times with the original htc charger.

So long One V!

So I went to get my one v replaced and apparently the HTC guys had like 4 more units with defections! HTC themselves said that many pieces were defected and such problems wouldn't be solved till another 2 months or so and they suggested me to get a new device. So here I am with a sensation xe after replacing 2 one v devices! Regardless, I'd still say one v was an awesome lil guy and I'd still recommened..

I'm also curious to know the issue. My girlfriend loves her V. Hasn't had any trouble with it.

Sometimes HTC has that happen, I had 3 defective wildfire s when it first came out, so its probaly just a bug, give it a month or two and the phones will be fine

This sounds unlikely to me. If this were true I think it would be all over the internet.
BTW, I've seen nothing wrong with my unit. I'm really enjoying it.
well guys, just cuz it happens to me doesn't mean you all are unlucky
there were no issues with the performance, but bugs with the physical aspects of the phone. Like leakage of light from micro usb, from under the screen beneath the capacitive buttons and also bands of light on the display. Like I said, I replaced the phone 2 times already and the second unit turned out to be even more defected, and it's nearly impossible for me to go get a newer unit every time so yeah
I'm happy with the decision though! loving my XE!
One V is still awesome! THAT PHONE HAS MY RESPECT! \\m//
and yeah another thing was the grip. it would lose signal when held in certain positions! one minute it loses signal, the next minute i keep it on a table by it's own, full strength.
defective ?
i had htc desire and it always reboot whenever it gets overheat. I sent it to service it took 4 months already and i dont know what happens with it .
Just received by HTC One V
It is also defective.
- The screen has a yellow line on the top and the bottom
- The touch screen is not working in certain places.
This sucks. I know atleast one other person with the same problem.

This is not a defect per se but a design decision. I don't notice it when talking but I do on the edge of wifi range. Not seemingly worse than my tablet or laptop.

Or perhaps not as picky given that this is a budget device. I'm quite pleased with it for what I paid. My only complaint is no CWM Recovery yet.
BTW, where I live, the Sensation XP costs $100 more that the One V. My expectations would certainly be higher with that phone.
My device heats a lot during charging. Is that big issue???
Sent from my HTC One V
i'm not able to really quite explain what i meant by bands of light. you must have checked out the other thread about the yellow spots right? yeah quite similar to those.
i wouldn't say picky, but when htc themselves admit to their customers that they screwed up with some stuff, i'd rather go get something more solid and stable. that's just me though
Heat isn't good for it, but it's common for lith ion batteries to get hot when charging. My Galaxy Tab 8.9 gets pretty hot too. Haven't checked the One V yet.

well i had a bit of heating as well, but not a lot. probably cuz of the body that it would conduct a bit of heat, i guess it's not a big issue unless yours is pretty much sizzling xD

That to me is the only realistic problem, which my phone doesn't have at all.
The light leak is really no big deal. Neither is the signal strength issue. Side-by-side with my Wildfire S the One V always has equal or better signal and I've never dropped a call with the Wildfire here in Cambodia or Thailand. Where you dropping calls?
My earlier unit didn't have it at all but this one did. And the light leak is intensr, u can see it very very clearly, coming from sort of under the screen, even in normal view. I'd post a to show what I really mean but don't have it anymore now..

gsmarena.com posted their review a couple days ago and had quite the opposite experience:
Connectivity suffers no death grip
We tested the phone for death-grip and we didn't find any problems - Wi-Fi signal drops if you completely cover the top plastic panel on the back, but the reception still remains quite strong. Cell signal didn't budge.

I don't notice this either, and as I said before, it's signal reception is better than my Wildfire S so I'm quite happy. The WFS has never dropped a call and I doubt my One V will either.
yeah well like i said, maybe it's just my tough luck, right? hey, don't get me wrong with the issues, i absolutely love the One V!

amazon, all One X are faulty :(

Hey guys,
today i spoke to amazon germany about the one X, because i had already 3 faulty devices and all devices had the same issue, screen flicker.
The amazon worker said, they tested all devices and every device was faulty, now they are waiting for a statment from HTC. I think its very sad especially for the people who waited for their device, HTC shame on you -.-

Over here in Ireland, very few if any people have had to return faulty devices.
yeah but not in this dimension, i thought a bunch of devices were faulty but not that much, what do you think hardware or software?
The store were I swapped mine 3 times also said there is no "sense" in swapping for a 4th as they are all flawed.
when they cant fix the issue through an ota, then its gonna be expensive for HTC

They may be able to fix it through an OTA. A lot of early ICS ROMs for the Rezound had screen flickering problems, but they've since been worked out. At least there's hope!

If only the level of attention AntennaGate got becomes as widespread for HTCs woes...then we might all get a free case - oh wait that won't fix the Wifi issues, or the flickering...or the yellow spots...
And the transformer prime had the.same.issue, it took 4 ota to fix it. I think I have seen people say it is possibly tegra related

While the problem is very real, I highly doubt that Amazon ripped open lots of boxes and started testing the phones. There are seals on the tape on the side of the box and they wouldn't have been able to resell the device after opening it I think they probably re-tested the faulty ones returned and judged by the number of returns that there was a general fault. By the way, it is easy to determine if your phone is a new never used one or not. When you switch the phone on, if it takes ages to start, going black for a while, it is new. If someone had switched it on, even if they didn't do anything, and switched it back off again, it would not take long to turn on the next time, due to fast boot. Since the fast boot setting is always on after a factory reset, I believe it is impossible to get the phone back into a state of "reset + long boot".
Also, having now been on my 6th phone, every single one of them had flicker. They were not all built at the same time or bought from the same store. I found a test case that could make any of them flicker
1) Battery below 50%
2) Brightness set to 40%-50% (varies a bit from phone to phone)
3) Go to the XDA forum web page on the phone. As the page is loading up, focus on the background and will see flickering as the CPU activity increases during rendering
I think there are two types of flicker. One that happens all the time on some phones most visible on grey backgrounds. And another type of flicker that happens at certain brightness/battery/cpu levels.
Another test case is:-
1) Set brightness very low, such as 20%
2) Go to app/play store
3) Choose "My Apps"
4) This may only work with a considerable number of apps..I tried it with 60. Rotate to landscape, watch very carefully the grey background...and then when the white re-appears, watch the brightness change upwards after it settles.
5) Rotate to portrait and watch again at the grey, then the white brightness levels
A friend bought a HOX just recently and it shows as well on these 2 test cases.
I bought my HOX from an italian ebay seller (a month ago: htc23) and device has arrived with an Amazon Spain package.
Never had any issue: no screen flicker, no flex ..no gap
When you have to set it up just to see it flicker that shows it's NOT an issue in my eyes - 'battery less than 50%, turn brightness to this level, etc.'
I have my phone on auto brightness, let the battery run to nothing sometimes and I have NEVER had the screen flicker. I'm saying there might not be a problem but when you get it under very precise circumstances I think you're deliberately looking for a problem...

I didn't go looking for the problem. I stumbled across it. I am very analytical, so once I find a problem, I determine the test case that produces it. I didn't return any of my phones for this problem. They all had other issues, such as screens that were not seating properly, one that displayed the left part of the image on the right side and vice versa (really weird that one), one that had a massive blue splodge near the middle of the screen etc etc

Not that much? How many does Amazon DE have in stock? 20? If it's more than that I highly doubt they opened every single unit to determine they're "faulty." The flickering's s/w and any phone is subject to it. Not all do, but all could. Last announcement on May 2 was HTC identified the issue and was working on an update specifically to address it. You're better off waiting until that fix is released.

you are so lucky! mine is an ht23 too, but it does have flickering and suffers when pressing the LCD left side. HTC says it's normal for an LCD which is pressed, i've tried to explain them that this happens only on screen borders, that most devices have no flex issues and so on.....they don't want to replace it.
really disappointed.

Indeed, but also how often are you staring closely at the screen while a web page is loading. It hasn't really bothered me but if it was flickering the whole time on a grey background, that would certainly annoy me.
Don't think I've ever seen a panel phone, tv or monitor that doesn't flicker under certain circumstances if you really look for it. Unless of course it's happening all the time in which case something is wrong.
My One X? No problems here as far as I can tell and I'm not about to start to try and make them happen either.
Don't forget also - everyone's eyesight is different. Anyone familiar with rainbow effect on DLP projectors? Doesn't affect everyone - it's something to do with the way the brain interprets the signals.......

Strange, as my last 2 had that issue. Made a youtube about it, send the link to HTC support and they contacted me. They told me that it was not the way an One X panel should react on pressure. Got a refund after the 3rd one, now I'm struggling what to do with my premium navigation license.

[Q] HTC One X touchscreen dead spots.

I got my phone the other week and after 2 hours of using it I noticed a strange behaviour.... I had a horizontal band in the middle of the screen that would not response to touch.
Since then I contacted my carrier to send me a new one, and of course they delay me with all the madness of black friday and "Orange black week" but I should get a new phone sometimes next week.
In the meantime I noticed something, at some point the touchscreen woked, I started to question myself why does this happen? I read a few posts on the internet about this and tested some things for myself and I got the point where if I rub the phone against my wool coat the touchscreen would start working, although when it works it somehow overloads and no touch input is registered until I turn off and on the screen. Obviously when I rub it on my coat the touchscreen get electrostatically charged which somehow makes it's "wheels" turn.
This happens everytime I restart the phone and after some time of sitting idle.
This is really weird behaviour, I'm certain it's a hardware fault, can something be done, a final solution? Rather than constantly rubbing my phone on my coat? (it looks weird ).
Try recalibrate, in keyboard settings - advance or choose reset calibration.
I have dead spots at the sides, if I use a drawing app and try to draw a line from left to right of the screen, it don't actually go to the edges.
I'm kinda hoping its just a calibration problem that'll go away in a future update, if not I'll send it in.
It's kinda annoying not being able to skip flash video using the bottom slider/progress bar, first halve works, but then gets more difficult further than halfway.

Hi,

One is the expected cost of the repair of replacing the defected hardware?

Htc one x lcd display problem

Hi everyone,
I am using htc one x for over two months now, and recently i have noticed that my lcd is not working correctly.
I am using arhd 31.1 now, and before that i have been using arhd 31.0, and so on and so on...
This error happened when i installed arhd 31.0, but i tought that it was the rom problem so updated my phone to arhd 31.1. And problem still persists.
The problem is following, part of my lcd display does not recognize gestures, or touches or any other input, it is like that part of lcd or digitizer is dead, i cant do nothing in that area.
Picture explaining problem more precisely and effectivly is in attachment, those lines you see should be continous.
So what do you guys think this is? I am really pissed and you cannnot imagine how much this is annoying :/
Is this hardware problem or something else? Just so you know my phone never dropped, and it was never punched or anything.

[Solved] Screen comes on but does not respond to any touch

I'll start by saying I don't have a whole lot of specifics on the issue as this isn't currently my phone. I'm looking to buy one and the seller said that one morning the phone would sporadically not respond to touch and by the end of the day wouldn't respond at all. She said that sometimes if she repeatedly locks and unlocks the phone it will work for a short time before becoming unresponsive again. She says there has been no water damage and she hasn't done any sort of software updates recently. She did say that a couple weeks before the issue started that it fell off her night stand but didn't seem to effect it at the time.
My question is has anyone run into this issue before? If so is it a software issue that could be remedied by doing a full wipe back to stock software? Or is it a hardware issue such as a bad digitizer or maybe something as simple as the digitizer cable coming loose?
I did some googling and the only thing I found about this issue was a result of flashing the wrong ROM to the s3. Any help would be appreciated.

She says she managed a factory reset before the screen completely quit responding. But I don't know if she just cleared her data or did a full reset

This happened to me once. I fixed it by factory resetting and reflash the ROM.
Looks like it'll be an easy fix(fingers crossed). I'll update after I purchase.

Well it appears to be hardware... I tried doing a wipe/reset in recovery and after that didn't help I flashed back to stock using odin. Still nothing so it looks like I'll be replacing the screen.

I was going to say it sounds like the digitizer controller died/was bricked by a wrong rom.

Try seeing if the ribbon cable is loose? Very possible, and would save you quite a bit of money , also, nice to see you on the S3 forums :highfive:!

Forgot to mention it but I pulled the back off and checked the ribbon cable. Removed and reseated it as well as made sure it wasn't corroded. Still a no go but on the bright side I found a nicely priced "blemished" screen on eBay so in a couple weeks I should be rocking the s3! And I'm glad to be in these forums. Looks like I'm going to have more options than I can handle.

If blemished means lightly scuffed just use some glass cleaner on it in a small coat, buddy of mine did that with his iPhone looked brand new.
& yep lol, soo many choices for ROMs and kernels for this phone, gotta love it :good:
So I got bored and disassembled and cleaned the connections on the board as well as the connections on the back of the screen. After reassembling it I get response from the touch screen again although its as though there's a phantom finger making random movements on the screen.

Looks like you've got ghosts
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
So I guess it was just a bad digitizer. Just got my new one and got it swapped out and I'm good as new! Though if anyone else is looking to replace a screen and aren't too brave when it comes to taking a phone apart I would suggest getting a screen that has the frame already attached to it. Removing the screen from the frame and reattaching is a bit tricky.
