Ok so with the Reader and My shelf widget, I was wondering how I can add my own books, eg ones on my SD Card to the list of books there? Any one know how to?
Also what pdf reader is recommended for reading books?

Add the books in /sdcard/Digital Editions . I add them in epub format, don't know if the reader can open pdf files.

There are free converters for epub. The reader app is excellent, apart from the lack of cyrilic fonts build-in and you have to reconvert your books to include the font

Hi! i'm definitely no authority on the matter, but here's my experience so far:
firstly you'll have to get an ebook reader, If I remember correctly there's one already on the phone made by HTC (though I may have downloaded it from the market myself) it's just called Reader, and comes with a few books built in (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland etc.). I believe it's meant to be more of a portal to an online store where you can purchase more books. I've not tried it myself yet, but have heard you can add ebooks of a certain format (epub I believe) into a folder on your SD card (you have to name the folder Digital Editions if I remember correctly) and it'll find them and add them to your collection.
I also understand that there is an Android version of Amazon's Kindle software, but have no experience with it. It looks to be available here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=red_lnd_shrt_url?ie=UTF8&docId=1000423873
The other ebook reader I have downloaded (from the market) seems to have a good reputation is Aldiko. Again this comes with a couple of books built in, and again you can import your own epubs.
both seem quite usable.
When it comes to ebooks the seem to come in many formats - .lit, .epub, .html and .pdf to name the few that I know. These can be DRM protected, to prevent piracy / sharing. Also there is software available to create your own or convert one format to the other, I recently used Calibre on my PC which seemed to work well.
As to where you can get hold of the books, there is obviously the official channels - using the stores in Aldiko, Reader, or the Kindle app (I'm sure there are many more). Then there is the shadier, less legal way - if you wish to go down this route I would advise you to be careful and that google is your friend.
Good choice with the Jonathan Stroud books, they're great fun.
I hope that helps,
Good luck,
Grim.
For ya books, get aldiko then have a look at this website, www.drinkmalk.com, the Johnathan Stroud books you are after are on there, this is not a pirate books website

I have loads of books in pdf and txt formats, any readers that support them? Adobe Reader ofcourse for pdf, but it,s not as user friendly as the readers...
Yeah, I like Aldiko too. Although I originally wanted something as nice looking as the iPhone app. I intend to have an ebook reader section or page when I get around to it on that site and an Android User Interface section.
If anyone recommends any - I'll add them to the pages.
Official Aldiko link.

I agree. The best Adobe Reader experience I had (as far as perfect scrolling was concerned) was with Windows Mobile 6.1. (WM 6.5 wasn't as good for some reason on my ROM/phone at the time.)
Even on the Desire HD, the Adobe Reader experience seems low par.
I too would be interested in a better and especially smoother Android .pdf reader.
.Epub
Make the following folder on your HTC Desire HD: Digital Editions.
Make sure your Ebook files are .epub format.
Place the .epub files in the Digital Editions folder and after that you'll find them on your bookshelf of your Reader from HTC.
That simple
The thing I don't like about aldiko is that even if you set the margins to 0, you still have the side margins in portrait mode, whereas with fbreader and moon+ reader you can have books full screen

Best reading experience I ever had was iSilo. I used that on my palmpilot IIIc up through my winmo Touch HD.
Nowadays, everything seems to come in .epub format. Best readers I've found are fbReader or moon+reader. I prefer fbReader due to it not using resources/battery if you tell it not to use the accelerometers (which moon+ stills seems to use and drain battery doing so), even though moon+ is a nicer reader (and has a library which doesn't crash).
There's also an iSilo for android, but I just don't use it anymore.
There's also a great chm reader (just search for chm in the market).
As for pdf's ... exPDF wins by a MILE. Adobe just sucks for pdf's, on any platform (which is stupid, as it's their format to start with! They just can't make a half decent reader, let alone a reader worth using).
As for where to get your books: Project Gutenberg, BEan Books and any other place which publishes pdf's, epubs or pdbs.
Fbreader and Feedbooks a winning combination in my book (pun intended)
Good news for anyone wanting to read books in PDF format! Aldiko just released an update that added support for PDF, works extremely well! The whole app also got a lot better! I've been waiting for this!
I tried a few search but i cant find any answers..
Will the mango update include the following?
-bluetooth file transfer
-front facing camera support
-usb mass storage mode
-Divx Support
-office docs file tranfer via zune
-better office suite
Will the mango update include the following?
-bluetooth file transfer - NO.
-front facing camera support - Don't know.
-usb mass storage mode - NO.
-Divx Support - Maybe.
-office docs file tranfer via zune - Don't think so , maybe using skydrive.
-better office suite - what is wrong with it ?
-bluetooth file transfer - NO.. what do you expect, MS to let you send music which the other person should bought ? NO, thats piracy, but they could support image transfers.
-front facing camera support - Maybe...
-usb mass storage mode - NO. coping .xap just like that... hm, never ?
-Divx Support - no, they have their music and movie store and they expect you to buy there.. and there's no DivX there as I know. Anyway, zune automaticly convert your videos to supported format when sync.
-office docs file tranfer via zune - this would be good.
-better office suite - yeah, what's wrong with this one ? Maybe some small updates..
We don't know everything that's going to be available in Mango.

well Joe Belfiore did show off quite a bit at MWC like better office integration with skydrive instead of having a sharepoint server

In order to support file transfer, you need a file explorer first.

Zune software and Zune HD player support Divx already. There is no reason other than phones themself don't support it (requires extra license feee).

You don't need a file explorer, you'd go into the hub eg pictures, long press on a picture and select share, via bluetooth.
Why would you need a file explorer? I swear some of you don't think before you post and just spin any feature question into a "we need a file explorer".. Anyway, I haven't heard any definitive answer about BT transfers for like images and contact cards... So I don't know why I keep seeing a "no" everywhere - unless I missed something from MIX
that is what i am thinking,ms could provide one button,by bypressing it,it could be shared via many other ways

Joe also said, in the keynote, that he wasn't gonna get into the end-user changes coming down the pipe. So, we definitely know more is in the works but not what.
Office Mobile isn't that good compared to ThinkFree or especially Documents-To-Go. The document compatibility is great, but the actual app functionality leaves much to be desired... That's why people are wondering if they'll have a better office suite.
They're prolly working on a better version for iOS, though. That seems to be the way Microsoft does things these days.

You are aware of the fact that there are different teams for each project, aren't you? The team working on improvements for WP7 is not the same team that's busy with working on iOS applications.
I'm more than aware of that. That's precicely why iOS has WLM with Messenger Social and we still have a crappy People Hub with no 1st party IM client.
That is part of the issue with Microsoft's mobile strategy. A Mobile OS is only as good as its apps and services integration. If they can't get their own Office/Windows Live/etc. team to support their own OS better than a competitor's product, those are issues which need to be remedied.
That was my point. Good job on being oblivious to it!

getting 1billion iphone users to BUY and get accustomed to M$ Office makes much better business sense than making a native application for all three of the wp7 users.
maybe we will see hard numbers of sales released if/when enterprise customers start using wp7 ?

What is wrong with that? Word on WP7 is the crappiest implementation of Word I've seen.
It's pathetically crippled and limited app which is practically unusable in any professional situation besides reading. This crap doesn't even allow you to change font type lol.

People just want to use their own files how they want.
Bluetooth transfer of files doesn't mean stealing anything. Do you really have so little brain to not beeing able to imagine people sending docs, videos etc? So what are you doing on xda than?
DivX is mostly MPEG4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile. And it's actually supported by WP7. The problem is that in real life DivX exists in .avi files, and this particular container format isn't supported. Now the weird thing is that .avi is Microsoft's own format, unlike .mp4 which is supported but comes from Apple.

But on phones..... Not really anymore
Hey,
I want to convert some PDFs to EPUB files so I can easily read them on my GNexus, I googled around and found Calibre, the problem is I can't find a good output that fits GNexus. The closest is the attached picture and the resolution is still wrong.
What do you guys use to convert PDFs to EPUB that makes them readable on GNexus?
Is there a way to set a custom resolution for the output EPUB file in Calibre?
Strange, I use Calibre to convert pdf and lrf to epub for reading on my nexus without any issues. I never setup any output options either, just used the default settings.
I'm using "moon reader" from the play store to read the converted books. It took some adjustment of the font settings and such to get it just the way I like it but I can say that now it's just as good as using Google play books to read books I purchased from the play store.

Calibre usually works very well. You might ask on the calibre forums http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=166
I want to be able to buy books in PDF format so that I can use ezPDF Reader to highlight them and take notes. What is the best way to do this if possible?
Thanks in advance.
Ok, looks like the best thing to do is use the Nook Reader app. It allows you to highlight and make notes.
Just a thought but can't you just change the ext to .pdf and see if that works.
