As he said, yes. There are many reasons why, but to get a detailed explanation I suggest reading this article http://gigaom.com/mobile/why-lte-sucks-your-battery-that-is/
So should I even bother being on Lte

It depends how patient you are. Would you rather drive from New York to California, or fly? The speed difference for me is well worth the cost of the battery drain.
I think I can live with it H+ in bell canada is decently fast download speeds averaging 20mbps and 5mbps upload.
But do you know how substantial the drain is?

No not really, but it is easy for you to test it. Try one day with H+ only, and then another with LTE only - compare the two.

It's the same on Verizon.
I would love to be able to switch to 3G when I'm in areas with no/poor LTE signal, but until some crafty developers figure out how to toggle it, I think we're both out of luck.
I believe Sprint versions can still toggle their LTE and 3G though.

You actually CAN switch to HSPA only. I'm testing it on mine. Do this:
1) Create 2 new APNs under settings => more settings => Mobile Networks => Access Point Names
2) Hit the menu button and select "New APN".
Create the Following APNs
Name: AT&T US
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: <not set>
Password: <not set>
Server: <not set>
MMSC: <not set>
MMS Proxy: <not set>
MMS Port: <not set>
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <not set>
APN type: default,supl,agps,fota,dun
Name: AT&T US MMS
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: <not set>
Password: <not set>
Server: <not set>
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <not set>
APN type: mms
Now switch to the AT&T US APN. You are now on HSPA. It might not be the faster backbone. Whenever I create an official HSPA+ APN, it still defaults to LTE, but this one keeps it on "4G".
To go back to LTE, all you have to do is select the "PTA" Access point again later.

One thing I did notice is it wasn't going back to LTE or alteast there wasn't a LTE icon for the other one.. Not that it is a big deal . . I have plenty good LTE coverage were I am but I don't need the speed I rather have extra battery.

I was pretty damn sure there was a star code or something to access that setting. All you're looking for is to access the EPST. On the HTC devices it was ##778. Maybe it's *#*#4636#*#* or something similar?
However, I don't have a VZW one, so I am unable to run through the star codes.

Hey, I have the L18i Arc S and am unable to get 3g thorough T Mobile or At&t in New York. Now my question is, would I be able to get 3G through any of the service providers by flashing a different ROM ? I know T Mobile frequency doesn't allow that so I guess the only choice left is At&t. Is there anything I can do to get 3G through At&t on my L18i Arc S ?
No, you should have bought a LT18a.
LT18i has no 3G connection is the states as it's missing the US specific frequencies for 3G and 4G/HSPA+

hey guys, i'm new to XDA. I didn't want to make a new post because it seems that my question has been asked. unfortunately my issue is a bit more technical, I recently bought a lt18a and for the past week I have not been able to get 3G to work. I found a work-around that Straight Talk works under AT&T network so I didn't have to pay their insane prices, but the 3G is not coming up no matter where I went. (I looked up an AT&T tower, drove there just to test out the phone and still nothing) I bought the SIM from straight talk's site and followed their direction on the APN settings I got EDGE to work but no 3G.
I have called straight talk but their infamous awful tech support was no use to me. I also check on other forums and still nothing.

If you set it to GSM only, then 3G is turned off/not in use. You need to set it to use WCDMA preferred.

So I recently received my nexus, and set it up with cm10 nightlies, but i seem to never have a data connection. I've looked online for apns and have tried every one but I always get connection for a few minutes, but then disconnects. This happens periodically throughout the day. And I know its not where I live because I was getting a great connection on my skyrocket. So I guess my question is what apn's are you guys using for att? Or maybe do you think I have a broken phone that needs to be sent back. I really wanna keep this phone, but the constant data disconnects are frustrating me! I hope this makes some sense, lol. Anyways, thanks!

Once you installed CM10, were the APNs intact or was the list empty?
I've just looked at my GN, also on AT&T, and found the following:
NAME: ATT
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: [email protected]
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com

MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN enable/disable: (checked off, but is grayed out and says 'APN enabled')
Bearer: unspecified
I think these APN settings are pretty standard. They were put into place by CM10 and I haven't touched them. Coincidentally, I was just about to flash back to stock; if you'd like, I'll double-check these settings once I've done so.
Good luck.
Did you test the phone before flashing nightly roms? maybe try pushing it back to stock and see if that is the issue
So yes I was on stock and I was having the same issues. That's why I flashed cm10 to see if it would help. I have the exact same apns as you do. And when it connects I'll have 5 bars. And literally within a minute, I see it drop all the way down to no bars and then it disconnects from the network. Thanks for the replies. I'm starting to think that I should exchange it for another one to see if its just the phone.

I realized I had a similar problem on CM9 and found two things:
1) APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
I added hipri to APN type (not 100% sure it was needed)
2) In mobile network settings I had not selected LTE in the Network Mode option list. (THIS was my problem) It's one of those, duh of course I have that set moments..when I really didn't. So double check that setting.

I believe THIS was my problem. On ATT roms it would say 4G (I'm not in an LTE area) - apparently on CM roms this translates to H+. Looks like I never really had a problem at all.
Thanks! Consider this solved.
You shouldnt refere to to LTE/HSPA+ as 4G. Just name it by what it is. Much eqsier to identify what the problem area is.

Change the following in your APN settings this resolved many 4g signal issues. I take no credit for this whatsoever. This was from another poster and I had these settings saved I just can't seem to find his post otherwise I would have linked it directly. Have you actually ran speed test to confirm network speed?
Im actually having the same problem... Im using the infuse 4g with a cyanogen 4.2.1. Iunlocked my phone and am using a t-mobile sim (therefore, towers) and even though my phone is staying in one place the signal is going from E (econ, 2g) to 3g and H ( basically 3.5g) (back and forth) and never really stops...also the signal will be at full bars, then drop to no service and do it all over again.
Im obviously having service problems when i shouldnt and im not sure if im getting 4g at all even though i called and they said my plan was full-time 4g depending on coverage... OR..." H " is mobil's name for 4g (actually HSPDA + HSUPA which is technically considered 3.5).. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
Galaxy S3 AT&T 16GB rooted but never use the root nor made modifications im running Jelly Bean 4.1.1.
Below is listed two APNs that I use to get strictly 3G/4G network because I want to save my battery on my AT&T Galaxy S3 running Jelly Bean 4.1.1. I don't want my phone looking for nor connecting to the LTE network. But I run into the problem of constently losing signal randomly while running on either of the 3G/4G APNs I have manually set. After I lose signal my phone reconnects within two minutes back on to the 3G/4G network which is what I want it to do. But I dont want to have the problem of constently losing signal. I never lose signal when I have my APN set to the orignal APN that came already set on my phone which is called "ATT Phone".
When I do lose signal its not like im in a poor signal area. I have an iPhone 4S aswell and I never lose signal while I do on the Galaxy S3. The iPhone is on AT&T as well.
I live in Plano TX which is an LTE area
Are there other APNs I can try for AT&T? Do I have something set wrong listed on the two APNs listed below?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

Hi
So long story short, my Tmo GS3 got stolen at my work :/
So my mom gave me her ATT GS3 cus she was up for an upgrade,
i been reading its possible to get 4G on an ATT GS3 but so far no luck,
i know i have the right APN cus i copied the one from my Nex4 to my GS3, i set the network to manual and choose Tmo, but still all i get is Edge.
Does it have to do something with the way i unlocked the phone?
I been reading it has to be factory unlock and i unlocked mine by dialing *#197328640# and doing the required steps.
Can anyone help me with this?

Do a little bit of search work; it depends on the coverage for T-Mobile in your area. It's still a Work in Progress to get the 1700 Mhz band to work on a ATT GS3 since there's a bounty for it in the General section.
Setting the APN to what you have on the Nex4 won't do anything because it's all software and hardware controlled. The software part is currently locked down because no one knows what to change to get the hardware to send and recieve information from the 1700Mhz Band.
Your best bet is to check the coverage map and hope you get 3G service or wait until T-Mobile Rolls out their 4G so the old EDGE will switch onto HSPA for ATT devices that use a T-Mobile Network.
Hope this helps

I had the same situation: only edge, after flashing this files i have 4g http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771021&page=25.
Start reading from post #246. If you flash the files you must root your phone like it is a t999, also goes for recovery, im not sure about kernel and DO NOT flash another modem/radio.
