[APP] Google now for CM9 [UPDATED 17 JUNE] - HTC Wildfire S

Disclaimer: Voice search is not working. Use swiftkey or another keyboard app that you like to type with your voice.
Also, this app is not really stable. You can not exit the app with the back button, you need to press home and kill it manually.
STEPS:
Open Root Explorer & navigate to /system
Now Open build.prop in Text Editor.
Edit ro.build.version.sdk = 16 & save.
Now go to /system/app & Rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk1
Now reboot & install the app from the download link. [LINK: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j85otexnkoktfiv/Velvet.apk ]
Now edit build.prop & change ro.build.version.sdk = 15 & reboot.
Modify Permissions (As shown in this picture! -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045&page=74 )
After this: Check if Google now starts, if you get a network error, that is ok!
If you get the network error:
Download this apk: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?u09rrb81ju6bkp7
Use root explorer to push the app to /system/app
Reboot
NEW SCREENSHOTS. (Taken on my new phone, Galaxy Nexus. I stopped using my Wildfire S and wanted some new screenshots, so here!)

This has been posted numerous times, but I made this tutorial specifically for our device.
WHAT YOU NEED:
HTC Wildfire S (Rooted - Running CM9 Alpha 5 or higher)
ES File explorer (or any other root explorer)
This APK: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?u09rrb81ju6bkp7
STEP 1:
Open ES File explorer and go to the settings (menu button -> settings).
Scroll down, press Up to Root so that its on.
Scroll as far as you can down, accept all three options there (Root explorer, Mount File system, backup system app).
STEP 2:
Go up to root (press the folder up button until you can't go further up).
Go to the folder /system.
Scroll down and press on the file build.prop.
On the 7th line, it says: ro.build.version.sdk=15.
Change the 15 to 16 and then press menu button -> save.
REBOOT YOUR DEVICE.
STEP 3:
If you haven't put the APK on your sd card, do it now.
Go to the folder on your SD card where you put the APK file (velvet-theo0o.apk).
Install the APK.
DO NOT OPEN THE APPLICATION.
Go to /system and open build.prop again, and edit the ro.build.version.sdk=16 back to 15.
REBOOT THE WILDFIRE S.
MOST IMPORTANT THING:
enjoy google now.
The normal APK works just fine, but you won't be able to use the google now cards, you can only search. (the search is great though)

Uh, dude, when I try to install the apk, it says "Application not installed". I even changed the build.prop settings. :'| I really want it bad... Please Help.

Put the ro.build.version thing back to 15 again.
Worked for me. If i'm right there should be an app called 'Google' on your phone now.

SUDDENDLY DIFFERENT XDA THEME.
I might edit the OP if more people have this problem...

When I rebooted, upon getting the launcher, I saw an error "Unfortunately, Google Search Has Stopped Working" so now changed the values and rebooting again. Hope For The Best :')

Oh yeah, sudden change in the layout of Xda. Lol.

And Wooooooooooooo.... Not working. -.- I hate when this happens - "Unfortunately Google Search Has Stopped" -.- Some fix? I really need it urgent and bad. :\

Hmm I'm working on a updated OP guide.

Updated the OP, a bit clearer and more like the Source post where i got it from.

F$%K this **** man. I was so happy to see Google Now for my device :\

Its a bit of a pain to install.. just follow the new guide and if that doesn't work follow this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045

I already have seen that link and tried that too, but no luck.
---------- Post added at 04:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:26 PM ----------
And the new OP isn't working for me as well. LOL

I'll post some more about how this works tomorrow.. it shows a nice weather card for me now and my next appointment for tomorrow. To search with the app however i cant use the Google app, i need to go to home and hold search button and then choose google..?

still getting a network error after following modified OP. search works fine and is updated to new look, but I don't see the google now cards and whatnot.
running the most current simonsimmons cm9 nightly
ill try a reinstall from scratch tomorrow but im nearly positive i followed everything to a T
EDIT:
after checking this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045&page=74
and modifying the permissions for velvet-theos0o-5.apk as shown exactly in the screenshot on first post, it now works as described
so for any of you who followed the original directions and were getting network errors, this might help.

I did not change any build.prop content . Just rename the file after place it in system/app and change permission. Reboot . That's it. Works fine for me.

Well great, before I get my Galaxy Nexus (Monday or Tuesday) I will update the thread and all my other tutorials for CM7.

Also, this app tutorial works for any phone running android 4.0.4+.

Thanks
I finally got Google Now running on my HTC Desire S with CM9.
Very nice torturial
I think you should write that you need to change the permissions on the second downloaded .apk.
I should

Welp, updating the thread now.

[APP][ROOT] GTalk 1.3 with Video - Working on the SGS2!!

See the original thread posted by britoso for details but thought you guys might like a fresh post here with details specific to our SGS2:
[APP][ROOT] Google Talk 1.3 with Video calling, Now wifi optional!
Initially installed talk1.3.nowifi.update-signed.zip via root explorer as per I2asta's post but the other party could not see my video in their chat. So, installed the suggested "GoogleServicesFramework.apk" to /system/app location (root explorer), rebooted and video is now working both ways!!
Update - A little guide as suggested by nasgilani!
Notes
- Root Explorer is a paid app, tried & tested! There are free alternatives out there but use at your own peril...
- I'll be using the updated gapps and the files therein for this guide. If you want to use an alternative version e.g. nowifi, download that one and use in the instructions instead.
- After performing this mod you will probably have to setup your Google Account again... and possibly reboot a second time to resolve any quirks.
Steps
1. Download the Full Google Apps from 20110503 which includes the updated GTalk
2. Extract the following files from the zip and place them somewhere easily accessible on your phone's SDcard:
/system/app/Talk.apk
/system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
/system/lib/libtalk_jni.so
3. Open up Root Explorer and goto your extracted files
4. Long Click on Talk.apk and rename to Talk2.apk
5. Long Click on Talk2.apk and copy it, then navigate to /system/app
6. Press Mount R/W at the top right so it looks like:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Fig. 1 - Mount R/W to write files to this system folder
7. Click on the Paste button to paste it here
8. Long Click on Talk.apk and rename it to Talk.apk1
Fig. 2 - You should now have both talk2.apk and talk.apk1 as shown above
9. Long Click on Talk2.apk and select permissions
Fig. 3 - Permissions should be as above
10. Alter the permissions to the same as Fig. 3 above and OK it
11. Now navigate back to your extracted files and rename GoogleServicesFramework.apk to something like GoogleServicesFramework2.apk and then Copy it.
12. Navigate to system/app and then Paste it here
13. Rename the original GoogleServicesFramework.apk to GoogleServicesFramework.apk1
14. Now you can Rename the new GoogleServicesFramework2.apk to GoogleServicesFramework.apk
Fig. 4 - Now you should have 2 GoogleServicesFramework files
15. Long Click on the new GoogleServicesFramework.apk and alter the permissions to the same as shown in Fig. 3 above and then OK it
16. Navigate back to your extracted files again and Copy libtalk_jni.so
17. Then navigate to /system/lib and press Mount R/W
18. Paste libtalk_jni.so here
19. Again, set the Permissions of libtalk_jni.so as shown in Fig. 3
20. Reboot your phone...
21. Open up Talk, click on your own avatar and make sure Allow video and voice chats is enabled
22. Test out chat to make sure audio/video is working both ways...
23. Done!
A big thanks to britoso for posting this and I2asta for the root explorer intstructions!!
Thanks for posting it mate,
I would suggest if you can make a small guide on how and what you did to enable Gtalk video enabled on SGS2
Edit: Thanks mate you made this thread alive after the Guide..

Do I have to replace the original Talk.apk on system/app?
have you tested video chat with a pc client? How was the quality on 3g?

yep, I renamed it in the above instructions to Talk.apk1 and left it there just in case you wanted to revert back to the original Talk.
Just a note, lost my Google sync after installing the GoogleServicesFramework.apk, and had to re-add my account in Settings to get my contacts back etc...
No issue obviously just wanted to prevent any "OMGWTFBBQ!! where have all my contacts gone?!?!?!?!" posts... lol

yep, I've only tested with PC clients and if you installed the nowifi version then it works with 3G. The quick tests I've done over 3G shows it works rather well with only a slight lag, acceptable imo.

Sorry mate, i missed that part as i had already installed it and the only change i made was installing GoogleServicesFramework.apk as i found earlier today my mate could hear but not see me...
So that was my bad buddy, i'm sure anyone coming to this thread and reading properly will see what i missed, i just scanned it quick as i had already done most of the work...
One thing i've experienced, when switching to the Rear Camera, it cashes and I only get audio until I select Force Close... i tried this several times but on the 4th it fully crashed my phone, which took maybe 2mins to decide to reboot itself... no damage done tho...
Dickie
Thanks ma10 !! it works ! haha.. I just need to re-login my google account but no contact lost before login.
Edit: Try to change to rear cam and it work fine.

@Dickie, I'm using talk1.3.nowifi.update-signed.zip and I guess that jonrwg is using the one inside gapps.zip if that is any help...
What is the different between talk1.3.nowifi.update-signed.zip and gapps.zip? Is it the same? Just curious.
Do we have this working with the front camera yet?
Does 'Talk2.apk' not need to be renamed to 'Talk.apk' between steps 9 and 10?

No that definetely shouldn't happen. You'll have to reflash your rom. I'm thinking of taking this down, it works for most, but some people are having problems..

Takes long? more than 5five minutes?
Its not normal.... Do 4 wipes and recovery you Rom.
Do it manually.
Firs´t make sure u have all driver´s installed on your pc.
Gnex must be Rooted. Unlock is not needed.
Install Java Runtime Environment
Make sure you have LMT 0.96 or Button Savior installed otherwise you will be unable to navigate.
This is how you would edit your framework-res.apk yourself to hide Nav Bar:
Google: Donwload Apktool.
(Make sure apktool and framework-res.apk from your own ROM are in the same folder)
Extract apktool and open command line
1) Type: apktool if framework-res.apk in Command Prompt
2) Type: apktool d framework-res.apk in Command Prompt
3) Locate and edit bools.xml in folder location: framework-res/res/values/bools.xml
(Open with Notepad ++ and edit to "false" : "config_showNavigationBar">false)
4) Type: apktool b framework-res new.apk in Command Prompt
5) Open both original "framework-res.apk" and "new.apk" with WinRar/7Zip
6) Delete "resources.arsc" from "framework-res.apk" and replace it with the
"resources.arsc" from "new.apk"
7) Paste "framework-res.apk" into system/app using Root Explorer and reboot device. Should be ok! I if not, go to Root Explorer system/app find framework-res.apk go to permissions and change to rw-r-r-- Reboot and enjoy!
Cheers!

[MOD] JellyBean Carrier Name Change

HOW TOO: Change Carrier Name Using Root Explorer (or similar app)
For those who wanted to know here is a nice and easy way to change carrier name for the time being until custom ROMS come out with the option built in.
-Must Have Root
-Must have a file explorer such as Root Explorer to have access to System Files
PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR PHONE, MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY MODS SUCH AS THIS!
also note: i am not taking credit for this mod as it is the same mod that was used on ICS to change carrier name for ROMs such as CM9.
credit goes to belair56 for letting me know how to get this done on this original post. I have just simplified instructions a bit.
STEPS For people who already have "Verizon Wireless" showing up:
1) Download Carrier.zip file i have attached and extract "spn-conf.xml" onto your desktop or some folder you will remember where it has been placed.
2) Open "spn-conf.xml" with something such as NotePad or WordPad and edit the words that you see below in red to whatever you want to display instead of Verizon Wireless.
3) Save "spn-conf.xml" and copy it to the root of your SD Card.
4) Open Root Explorer or an app similar, copy "spn-conf.xml" from your SD card to "System/etc" directory.
5) Reboot, and Enjoy!
STEPS For people with "T-CDMA 64" showing up:
1) Download T-CDMA 64.zip file i have attached and extract "eri.xml" onto your desktop or some folder you will remember where it has been placed.
2) Open "eri.xml" with something such as NotePad or WordPad and edit the words that you see below in red to whatever you want to display instead of Verizon Wireless.
3) Save "eri.xml" and copy it to the root of your SD Card.
4) Open Root Explorer or an app similar, copy "eri.xml" from your SD card to "/data" directory.
5) Reboot, and Enjoy!
Code:

No, I left Verizon Wireless in the spn.xml file. I didn't change the writing. But when I add it to system/etc and then reboot, my phone still says T-CDMA64.
Put a eri.xml file in /data, reboot, enjoy seeing "Verizon Wireless"

1) Where do I find this eri.xml file....
2) There is no /data in the one and only JB ROM for VZW.
Do I pull/find this eri.xml file in another ROM perhaps? Do I then create a /data folder in the root of the ROM?

Idk where to find it, but you are mistaken, there is a /data directory. I think you are trying to look for it in /system if so you wont find it there.
You kids are doing it wrong!
Take the "spn-conf" file in the OP and rename it to "eri" (no quotations of course). Paste the file under /data and reboot. It works, promise.

Yep, sure did. I was T-CDMA 64 for a few hours today before I changed it . I'm not sure why it was different for me than it was for you, but I was always under the impression that this info was pulled from /data instead of /system/etc, but I guess every model is different!?

OP has been updated for people who have the T-CDMA 64 issue... thanks for the info on the fix!!
I've tried this recent discovery twice with no luck bedtime now.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
renamed the original spn-conf.xml to eri.xml and put it in /data and still no luck... Any ideas?

[APP][CM] Install Location - choose where to install apps

#Henkate said:
For me, the weather widget works, also in notification drawer.
Regarding install location, take a look here, as a alternative: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/43517/installing-to-sdcard-by-default
Run in terminal:
(0 auto, 1 internal and 2 external sd card)
PHP:
pm set-install-location 0/1/2
EDIT:
@samiblm : if you want, i can make a small app with Tasker which ask you where you want to install everytime you are in Package Installer ( the menu after you click to install an .apk). The app would work like this: when it see that you are in Package Installer ( you want to install an app), a small popup appears and ask you where you want to install, you choose and then you can install.

Alright. I've made a small app using Tasker for CM which will show a popup with option to choose where to install the app you want. The app run in background and the popup appears when you are in Package Installer (when you want to install an app). I hope you'll find it useful as the setting regarding it is gone in latest cm release.
I called it Install Location.
To run that pm set-install-location commands we need root, so the app need root too because that.
Please read the below informations.
HOW IT WORKS?
Upon first run, it run su command to get root access. If you decline the access, the app won't work, so it will ask for su again after you open it again. If you allow the access, then it will turn a profile on which shows a popup to choose install location when it detect that you are in Package Installer. The Package Installer it's the trigger. You choose your choice, then the popup dissapear and then simply install the app you want.
NOTES
1) If you want to cancel the popup, just press back button (phone button).
2) If you want to stop this app from showing the popup, then simply force close it in settings.
3) If you greenify / hibernate the app, then it stop working.
4) There shouldn't be any battery drain.
5) BUG: when you uninstall an app, the popup will appear too since uninstalling apps is done by Package Installer too. I don't think there's any way to fix this, at least I don't have any idea.
6) The app should work on other phones/ROMs as long the command pm set-install-location is supported.

PROJECT SOURCES
Download source: http://www.mediafire.com/?x45maikt876f7kk
It is Tasker code. You must install Tasker and then copy the file Install_Location.prj.xml to Tasker folder > projects, then open Tasker, press on home icon, choose import and choose the .prj file you copied. Then you got the source and can edit it as you like. To build app with Tasker, you need to install it's plugin named App Factory (Google play store). You can find basic informations like how to import project on Google or i think even on Tasker website.

Anybody can confirm whether is working for you or not? lol
Sorry that i didnt have time to reply earlier than this, but here is the thing; when i type the command in the termonal i get this error :
And since the app uses this same command, it will obviously fail to complete the task

Write "su" (without quotes) and press "enter", then write the pm command.. My app does run su command before pm command too when you choose your option in the popup, to make sure that the command will work.
It works for me, but I don't understand why doesn't work for you.
So, write su command before that and let me know if there's any error.

I don't understand what's wrong. I've tested it myself and it is working fine for me When you want to install an app, the pop-up should appear (like in the screenshot from first post), before touching "install".
I'll try to make a new one and I'll remove the su check at first run.

Not sure if it is su related.
I changed root access from always ask to allowed but it did not make a difference.
I can test for you, if you want.

I did what you suggested and no error is given this time, but it's still not working and the apps are still getting installed in the internal sdcard ..

Turn off round icons in pixel launcher and Chrome Beta/Dev Sign-in issues

Loving the phone so far, but I've got one annoyance and one problem
1. Can I disable the round icons in the launcher? I love the look but only 50% of my apps are round, the rest are their normal shapes and this grates on me. Wouldn't mind turning it off until 3rd parties update all their apps
2. I cannot sign into chrome beta or dev (and initially struggled with normal Chrome). Hit the sign in button, prompted for my fingerprint. It then goes to the add account page, rather than picking up the account on the phone.
I put my email in and it just says account already on device, and that's it, I can't do anything else, any help would be appreciated!
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Manually updated to NDE63P and the sign-in issues are sorted, just the icons to go!

To remove the round icons, you need to decompile framework-res.apk and edit the bools.xml, changing "config_useRoundIcon" to false.
Is there any way to do this without unlocked bootloader/root?
Alternative Solution
I know this isn't really what you asked for, but i also didn't like to have some round and some old Icons and i kinda came up with my own solution .
I just used Materialize (cant post link because this is my first post)
and i changed every icon that i didn't like.
It's pretty easy to use (if you have any questions ask me and i'll see if i know)
Sadly i can't post any screenshots because for spamreasons i have to write 10 posts before i can use external links...
i might post some later
anyway i hope that was usefull for you

once you decompile the apk, navigate to framework-res/res/values/bools.xml. then change the line below from true to false. its at the bottom of the xml file. after you compile the app make sure to sign it. you can sign the modified apk by copying the original Meta-INF folder and androidmanifest.xml from the stock apk to the new apk. to install you can either use twrp file manager or root file browser. push new apk to system/framework. phone will soft reboot. after reboot clear launcher data and you'll have the old icons. some icons did not revert though. that may just be the apps themselves and not the launcher. a good chunk of the google apps do revert to the old style though. i have a flashable zip for pixel that will flash to framework. if you cant get this to work ill send you the framework in a flashable zip.

Where did you install the jar file.

Is that the hard drive you have windows on? It has to be in you're system. That's why the command isn't recognized. Also do you have the latest Java installed.
