My T-989 has never been able to stay shut down if the charger is plugged in. I shut it off and don't plug in the charger it stays off. I shut it down and plug in, or plug in and shut down, either way, and it immediately it turns itself on. I knew the that this would be a problem somehow when I noticed it but, no one (no one as in thread replies to similar problem) seemed to think it was a problem. Well, I was using my phone as a hot spot for my laptop as I do pretty often and this time I ran the battery down to about 7% before I realized just how low it was. I had to finish what I was doing on the laptop before disconnecting the phone. As I finished and started to go into settings to turn off the hotspot option the phone shut itself off. I then plugged in the charger and the phone did it's little trick and turned itself on instantly. Being that it has no charge left in the battery, it shut itself down. And because it doesn't stay turned off when plugged in, it turns itself back on. So the cycle begins. It won't charge up because it keeps cycling. And it keeps cycling because it doesn't allow itself to sleep while plugged in. I need to somehow charge the battery outside of the phone I guess. But what about a fix for the never sleep bug? Do other Roms allow sleep while charging? How can I charge the battery other than the obvious of using another SII or wiring the battery contacts directly to a charger with the mini usb cut off? Will a charged battery solve the problem ? Or is it a soft brick and I need to Odin and flash a new Rom? How come nobody could foresee this "dog chasing its tail" scenario when the phones don't sleep when plugged in? I need to resolve this asap. And as I always do say, Thanks in advance for your help everyone on XDA.
Maybe hotpot app issue or bug. Do you think you could reflash without the app. Personally I've never have heard of anything like this but thats why this site is for. To help one another get the most out of our device.
I'm no dev not computer genius, and pls understand that what I'm giving is "my" opinion. I could be wrong or even maybe a chance to be right.
With that said, why not try to get the phone on cmw and do a darkside
Cache wipe and maybe that could help ur permissions. And maybe even fix ur prob, another idea was to wipe ur battery stats. Also on advance mode in cmw. It could be endless factors that have caused this issue. I know its not a lot of help but hopefully I'm pointing at he right road for u to fix your device

Thanks datrapstar. I first have to get the battery charged somehow. And even then the only thing I can do is USB jig into download. It stays in download when I remove the jig, but as soon as I connect a cable to it from the laptop or charger it starts the on off loop. So,????
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
And your doing the 3button combo? It should automatic start booting into download mode. I don't know exactly how to do the jig. You may wanna pm "all gamer" being that he's the one I seen posting about it, and ask him if he can give u a lil guidance.

Also, are u capable of going into a retail tmo?, maybe they can let u charge up there on one of their display devices. Its at no cost to them. And sometimes u find one of the cool sales reps that is willing to go above and beyond. Its the best I good bro, sorry

efforts that aren't in vain.
I'll start by letting you (datrapstar) know I appreciate your input. It is certainly welcomed . The jig I'm talking about is a plug - in (mini USB) device that jumps, or crosses two of the circuits of the female USB plug on your phone. It instantly puts your phone into download mode. Rather than the two or three button method, which in some instances won't work, the jig always ,99% of the time, works even if you have a unresponsive, almost bricked device. All that power for $10 plus shipping from MobileTechVideo, the guys who can modify your phone with the famous Unbrickable Modification. Okay, back to the issues at hand, my hand, to be exact.
I do have access to a TMo store, being that I live in " Lower Beverly Hills " we even have a valet parking lot across the way. I'm just fu##ing with ya Bro. But yeah, I may do just that to charge the battery. And I have a girl that works at one of the TMo retails that I use who has already gone above and beyond the call of duty for me that I may have to pay a visit to. I didn't have time to do anything today about my SGII, and fortunately I have my Captivate that I use as my business phone to keep me connected to everyone during this time of phone aggravation. I will keep posting with my progress toward a resolution, and I will gladly accept anymore input sent my way that might steer me towards a final solution. Oh, and sorry for the long, and wordy posts. (Not really) I like to write, and don't practice "textphonics" abbreviations or acronyms. Later Bro.
No doubt then ,hope it all works out for the best for u. I'll keep checking in on the tread and see how ur making out. And I'll also try doing a lil more research in any resolutions of the matter. Good luck:thumbup:

Cool. Talk again later.
Got it working
I got it working Thursday. The phone finally decided that it was gonna stay shut down and the battery recharged. I knew I could get it running after that. I probably did a few things that didn't need to be done but, I'm still new to this. I wiped everything (almost), Dalvick, Data, Battery, Cache, Factory Wipe and Reset. I probably forgot some. I Odin the .tar/md5 file and then rebooted. I just want to know how to fix the phone from not shutting off and staying off if the charger is plugged in, and which custom ROM I should try now ? I'm back to rooted, stock, Gingerbread 2.3.6 UVKL1, Baseband version UVLE1. Any ideas?
I'm on infamous 2.8 right now and I can't complain about it at all. 27+hrs battle life and thats with light use. As for the other issues the only thing I can think off it was just a bad download.

My phone has started acting weird lately and im not sure why, it could just be a bad battery but im not sure until i put another one in it tomorrow. Ive been using myns 2.2 for a few weeks, and cm6 for a long time.
Myns has been setup the same way for weeks, no changes at all. Yesterday i woke up and my phone was dead, but before i went to sleep it had a little over 70% battery.
Its not my charger ives tried different usb cables, car charger, etc. The battery icon will change to charging but the % never goes up....
Any other ideas except a bad battery?
Could always do a nandroid backup, then do a wipe reinstall, just to see if its OS or app related. Then if no change was found in regards to battery drainage, you could go do a nandroid restore, if you found it was just a bad battery all along.

i did a backup and full wipe earlier when my phone still had about 30% battery. Still wont charge.
Turn your phone off, and plug it into a USB charger, see if it charges. If not, try plugging into a USB port on a laptop/desktop, while the phone's still off.
Just a shot in the dark here.

So your usb will power the phone enough to turn on? Can you do all adb type things like the USB is connecting right? It could always be the battery or bad contacts/solder on the phone part

Assuming you flashed new Rom correctly, you can start to look at battery and hardware.
Id start wig battery, maybe sprint store has one laying around they could pop in ling enough to observe its behavior. Maybe buy heap battery from ebay.
I m not the authority on anything but I would flash back to stock and ask Sprint store to help you out. If you walk in with custom Rom they may flag you. I find it hard to believe you have a bad battery already, but I have seen stranger things.
How long does it take to charge? And precisely how long it last? An hour? 30mins?
Oh my bad, I see its not charging at all. Could be bad cable. Bad thing is, if they find that he usb port is damaged they may not warranty that. But who knows.

I'm having the problem your describing. Do you know how to fix it? I've seen a couple of threads One said to flash the radio, but no one provides any links as to how to do it. I could really use some help.
Thanks,

As the title implies I think I did in my Epic 4g. I flashed the CM7 mtd build a few days ago and just found out about the 911 issue so i tried ODIN'ing back to stock and it was taking forever (it got stuck of factoryrfs.rfs if I remember correctly) so I unplugged the USB cable as I have done before when Odin freezes on me. When I unplugged the battery and then put the battery back in it will not boot or go into download mode. Any advice or did I actually brick it this time? Thanks
I have heard stories of leaving the battery out for a few days might help. Also holding the power button while inserting the battery. I haven't tried those options, but I have seen people mention them on the forums.
I did something similar the other day.
Remove the battery for a couple of minutes. Plug in with no battery and go to dl mode. You will be fine.
Ensure to use the pit file and select repartition when coming from mtd to stock

Advice above is good. Definitely try it with no battery or sd card using the computer as the power source try to put it into download mode. Others have had success popping the battery in and out trying to get into download mode. Hold all the buttons at once while battery is out to clear any capacitive charge.
I thought my phone was bricked thought it would not boot up at all,i after the third day I took it to sprint to get a replacement, I guess the 3rd day was the charm because as soon as the sprint guy put the battery in it booted up to clockwork and they said my phone was rooted and they would not service, good thing I didnt need them after clockwork any way
Thanks for all the quick responses. I left the battery out of the phone all night and tried popping out the battery and plugging the phone directly into my laptop via USB (HP touchpad cable) and still no go. I tried pressing all the buttons as someone suggested to reduce capacitive charge and still nothing, any other tips or am I going to have to visit the big yellow's at Sprint?
Hidden reset button
Ok, I havent tried this... and I also hear that the older epics dont have it. When you take off the back cover, There is a small hole by the camera. I cant find he the xda form maybe someone will be kinda enough and throw the link up.
But some claim that the hole by the camera is a reset button. poke it with a paper clip (gently?) for about 10-30 secs.
I hope this helps, or you get it working some way or another. I'd look into getting a new usb cable if I were you!

Just got my phone yesterday. Running Calk's 2.7 and ICS theme, set dpi to 160, looks and runs awesome. However, it always thinks it's either charging or plugged into USB. the red LED never wants to turn off. how can I remedy this problem?
Possibly try turning it off, booting to recovery, clearing cache/dalvik-cache, and then clear battery stats
Was it like this prior to rooting and custom rom?
Apk, that didn't do it.
yes, it did the same thing beforehand. Except takng out the battery solved the problem once.
Get it exchanged ASAP. This is a defect with the USB port. Has NOTHING to do with software. I was outside of my 14 day return and Sprint made me send it to Samsung to get fixed. $7 jig and two weeks later it was fixed.
With my tech background I would say check the charging port. Could be a metal shaving or *gasp* corrosion!

Shouldn't matter. The phone has a one year warranty from Samsung. I bought my wife an Epic on craigslist last year and had it repaired under warranty.

Yup. I had the same problem. I think it is related to the USB port (from reading a few SGS2 threads). I took it to the Sprint Store and they said the USB port looks good. They reset it and it still acted that way. However, 2 hours later the problem is gone. They ordered me a replacement so I'm still going to take it because who knows why the problem starts. I did have Calk's rom and also have the battering monitoring widget by 3C and I had cleared the battery stats multiple times prior to the symptoms starting. Just proving as many clues as possible...
What do you mean by reset?
Funny I see you have this problem (not really funny) because I noticed the same thing last night and just figured it was Rom related.
It sucks... can you give more details about the reset process? Soft reset?

I had the same problem.
The red light was on all the time, only went out when I got a text. If I pulled the battery the phone would show like it was charging as soon as I put it back in. It would show the battery animation on the screen not plugged in.
After a battery pull the phone would also not boot using the power button, had to boot to recovery and boot from there.
Took it to sprint, they gave me a new battery. Solved the problem only until phone was plugged in to charge. Then started all over again.
Turned out to be a problem with the USB port and they ordered me a replacement.
got it fixed! looks like the pcb on the port was sitting too close to the lower edge of the phone. pushed it up gently and now it seems to be working. thanks for the direction, nivron.
my other concern is that battery life sucks ass. drains really quick (at the rate of ~6%/hr!). again, running calk 2.7 + ics theme. also, taking out the battery seems to reduce the life 20%. what's the deal...
Hmm, now the USB cable needs to be at a certain angle for the phone to charge. Is there any way a Sprint store could furnish a replacement for me?
Hi I just got a e4gt used from a coworker for 80 bucks. But I'm having issues with it. Even off the cord, it says mtp connection. Every time I turn off the phone it sometimes starts right back up again on its own, and sometimes shows that it is charging, again while it is off the cord. Anyone have this problem? Since I got it used can I still take it to a sprint store and have them fix it? Thanks.
Its really annoying. I want to root it before I switch my service over since I want wifi tethering.

I have had this problem before. Once with my launch day e4gt and twice my current e4gt. The first one, I took to a corporate store and they replaced. The two times with this phone, I took a wooden tooth pick and cleaned the USB port (with the battery out). So far for me, that had remedied the problem.

If you have TEP, it would be free replacement at a sprint store. If you don't, it would be $35. We don't care about devices be used, per say.
However, this is all assuming there isn't corrosion in the charging port, which will generally cause the issues you are having. Take a peek in there with a small light and see if you can see any white cloudiness or rust.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
What is TEP? Does the warranty carry over of im not the one who originally bought the device? The guy bought it in september i think.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
It sounds like liquid damage to me.
Look really closely inside your charging port for anything green/white, especially toward the very base of the pins. Also, look at the charger itself for any green/corrosion on the pins. If you find any, dip a toothbrush in some denatured alcohol and scrub your charging port.
Works like a charm.
Ok so after cleaning out the charger it seems to charge better, but it has a different problem too. It doesnt stay off. Every time i try to power down it automatically turns itself back on. I want to root this phone before i switch my service over. Is it safe to root this phone if it doesnt turn off and stay off? And would a coroded charger port be the cause of it turning itself back on?

Make sure the device is usable first. A corroded charging port could definitely help in bricking the device, by not completing a full flash during installation of software.

hi all,

im having similar issues to the OP, with the phone constantly telling me that charging has been paused , voltage too high , even when the phone is not charging.
my phone has just been returned to me from a warranty repair for a faulty button and camera , it took almost 2 months to have it repaired by samsung.
i really cant face not having my phone for another 2 months if it needs to go for repair again.
how much would it cost to have the usb replaced on the phone if i was to bring it to a standard phone shop ??
thanks in advance guys.
p.s. i wouldnt risk trying to D.I.Y. it as im really not good at that kinda stuff.

That's very odd. I've seen liquid damage cause the phone to stay powered on constantly, but normally doesn't have anything to do with the charging port.
Pull your battery and leave it out for a few hours to fully reset the internal battery and see if that does the trick.
Did you use Denatured or Isopropyl alcohol to clean out the port? If not, you may have damaged something.. It doesn't take a whole lot of alcohol to clean out the port, just a dip into the alcohol with a toothbrush and a lot of scrubbing.
Regarding this being a widespread issue, I don't know if the port is more susceptible to liquid, but I have seen this issue four times over the last month and a half.. (Mainly with the Galaxy Nexus) Cleaning the charging port has resolved it 100% of the time for me and I have not heard back from anyone saying the issue returned.
OK so for some reason the charging works and the phone is able to shut off. Now I have a new problem. My e4gt will charge when plugged into the pc, but the pc doesn't recognize it. I want to root my device, but the computer will not recognize it no matter what! I tried uninstalling the drivers, reformatting my phone / sd card, restarting the computer, reinstalling the drivers, and i just can't get the computer to see the phone. What can I do? This is driving me insane.

maybe try using odin and reinstall a stock el29 rom see if that helps in any way?
I bought my Mom a used Inc2 on eBay. Rooted/S-OFF running SlimRom 4.2.2 on Page Plus.
My Mom messages me on Facebook to tell me she thinks the phone is broken. I have to agree. I don't know what she did, but she seems to think she had somehow got the phone into fastboot/bootloader/recovery and was trying to pull the battery to get it back to normal. She thinks she selected something before the battery pull, but doesn't know what.
Phone won't turn on (no splash screen, no boot animation, no nothing).
No LED when phone is plugged in.
Tried several charging cables.
Tried switching with a battery known to work and be charged.
Nothing.
Anyone else ever have a similar issue? Is there any way to repair this (taking apart phone and replacing parts)? Or should I just buy her a new phone?
Pull the battery completely..wait a sec with your finger on the power to completely discharge it ...pop battery back in volumedown +power to get into recovery check to see if she formated anything fix w.e profit perhaps ?

Battery is my guess
My guess was the battery too. Your mom may not have put it back in correctly (My mom sometimes can't see the little gold connectors without her glasses.) Make sure the connectors match up.
If that wasn't the problem, try using a (cell phone) universal battery charger.
(Amazon.com has them for cheap, and they save your life if your usb port ever dies until you can replace the charging port.)
Once you know the battery is charged, and put in correctly, you can tell if it's the phone or not.
If she wiped the system cache, you won't boot. But, you can always try placing a new ROM on the SD card (easiest way is using a desktop computer with an SD card reader,) and re-install the phone's operating system (rom).
Even if the phone is somehow bricked: you can still get her data and pictures off the SD card with any SD card reader connected to a computer.

Thanks for the responses. But alas, it is not a simple matter of battery wrong way. My gf has the same phone and hers works. I tried switching batteries and the one from my Mom's phone works and has about 40% juice in it.
But her phone won't respond at all. When you plug in the USB charger, the LED should come on to signify that the phone is receiving power from the wall/computer/etc... There's nothing.
The phone doesn't turn on at all. I can't get into recovery because it won't power on at all.
She said the phone booted a couple times before I got it, but got stuck on the boot animation and never made it into the actual ROM. Now it won't come on at all. I guess the phone is bricked completely (by no fault of the software - I think this is some sort of hardward issue but I just don't know what)
I guess I'll activate her old phone. Thanks for trying to help.
(I really thought holding the power button without battery in might work because I had used that trick once before, but alas, nothing)

I have same problem
I have same problem and when i got maintenance center they told me must change the IC flash for phone :crying:
Check the USB port
These phones came out so long ago I imagine original warranty is long gone. I that's the case, might as well open it up and check or fix the power button like chilly suggests.
There are little ribbon cables everywhere inside, for things like the USB port, screen digitizer...and if the phone was dropped, it could have squished the power button, and easily, jarred a ribbon loose. Checking them all out and inspecting the power button might be all you need to do for a fix. At the end of it all, even if nothing is solved, you can sell the phone for parts on ebay and make at least $45.
I thought about doing that once, but I'm glad I inspected mine before I hit the "sell button." I watched some tear-down videos on youtube and decided to give it a go. Now I'm much more comfortable with tinkering with phones. It can be a nice learning experience.
It started when I once tried to plug in my phone in the dark, and I actually managed to cram the USB charger into the phone upside-down!
What this did was make the phone un-chargable, even though the usb cable would still fit in there just fine.
Same symptoms you are having: cord goes in, no light comes on. Yet, the cord charges other phones just fine.
On ebay you can buy new USB ports for about $6-9. I purchased one, found a how-to video on youtube, and repaired mine myself with just a cheap torc x screwdriver set that I purchased for $8.
Fix worked 100%. Don't give up just yet.
