USB wont disconnect. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi I just got a e4gt used from a coworker for 80 bucks. But I'm having issues with it. Even off the cord, it says mtp connection. Every time I turn off the phone it sometimes starts right back up again on its own, and sometimes shows that it is charging, again while it is off the cord. Anyone have this problem? Since I got it used can I still take it to a sprint store and have them fix it? Thanks.
Its really annoying. I want to root it before I switch my service over since I want wifi tethering.

I have had this problem before. Once with my launch day e4gt and twice my current e4gt. The first one, I took to a corporate store and they replaced. The two times with this phone, I took a wooden tooth pick and cleaned the USB port (with the battery out). So far for me, that had remedied the problem.

Use another USB cable

I tried a different cable, same thing. Even when I connect a cable to the phone but not the computer, it thinks its connected. Starting to think I have a bad USB port or something. Since its used, do I have a manufacturers watlrranty or something?

If you have TEP, it would be free replacement at a sprint store. If you don't, it would be $35. We don't care about devices be used, per say.
However, this is all assuming there isn't corrosion in the charging port, which will generally cause the issues you are having. Take a peek in there with a small light and see if you can see any white cloudiness or rust.

What is TEP? Does the warranty carry over of im not the one who originally bought the device? The guy bought it in september i think.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

It sounds like liquid damage to me.
Look really closely inside your charging port for anything green/white, especially toward the very base of the pins. Also, look at the charger itself for any green/corrosion on the pins. If you find any, dip a toothbrush in some denatured alcohol and scrub your charging port.
Works like a charm.

Ok so after cleaning out the charger it seems to charge better, but it has a different problem too. It doesnt stay off. Every time i try to power down it automatically turns itself back on. I want to root this phone before i switch my service over. Is it safe to root this phone if it doesnt turn off and stay off? And would a coroded charger port be the cause of it turning itself back on?

Make sure the device is usable first. A corroded charging port could definitely help in bricking the device, by not completing a full flash during installation of software.

hi all,
n00b here so go easy !
im having similar issues to the OP, with the phone constantly telling me that charging has been paused , voltage too high , even when the phone is not charging.
my phone has just been returned to me from a warranty repair for a faulty button and camera , it took almost 2 months to have it repaired by samsung.
i really cant face not having my phone for another 2 months if it needs to go for repair again.
how much would it cost to have the usb replaced on the phone if i was to bring it to a standard phone shop ??
thanks in advance guys.
p.s. i wouldnt risk trying to D.I.Y. it as im really not good at that kinda stuff.

Are you activated on another carrier? Or do you not have TEP?

That's very odd. I've seen liquid damage cause the phone to stay powered on constantly, but normally doesn't have anything to do with the charging port.
Pull your battery and leave it out for a few hours to fully reset the internal battery and see if that does the trick.
Did you use Denatured or Isopropyl alcohol to clean out the port? If not, you may have damaged something.. It doesn't take a whole lot of alcohol to clean out the port, just a dip into the alcohol with a toothbrush and a lot of scrubbing.
Regarding this being a widespread issue, I don't know if the port is more susceptible to liquid, but I have seen this issue four times over the last month and a half.. (Mainly with the Galaxy Nexus) Cleaning the charging port has resolved it 100% of the time for me and I have not heard back from anyone saying the issue returned.

OK so for some reason the charging works and the phone is able to shut off. Now I have a new problem. My e4gt will charge when plugged into the pc, but the pc doesn't recognize it. I want to root my device, but the computer will not recognize it no matter what! I tried uninstalling the drivers, reformatting my phone / sd card, restarting the computer, reinstalling the drivers, and i just can't get the computer to see the phone. What can I do? This is driving me insane.

[Q] GNex will not charge / USB Host not recognised

Hey all
Wonder if anyone can shed any light on what I think is a unique problem - in that I can't find anyone with the exact same issue.
Last weekend I took the SIM card from my GN to place in another phone I was trying out. The GN was powered back on and being used on WIFI as I was doing comparisons, shooting some video of the new phone with it etc.
Popped the GN in a drawer without thinking and left if powered on
(see if you can guess where this is going)
Messed around with the other phone for about 4 days, got my GN out of the drawer and went to put the SIM back in my GN.
1. GN would not turn on initially at all. No recovery, nothing. (solved)
Read some posts on XDA and elsewhere, people with similar issues mentioning a long (5min+) battery pull would wake her up. Dutifully I obliged and the phone did indeed wake up. However, battery was totally dead and phone shut back down.
2. GN will not accept charge from a wall charger when phone is on.
Whilst the phone seems to take a 'trickle' charge whilst powered off (battery charge animation is on), this is exceptionally slow. Took all night to get to about 50% charged to allow me to boot up and have a look around. Whilst the phone is powered on, it will not recharge. tried all sorts of official and other USB and mains cables.
3. When connected to a PC via USB, will accept charge, but error message notes that USB Device not reconised, troubleshoot? etc...
Phone won't mount. Status says it is charging over AC.
So what's up? I assume the battery died big time over the 4 days i left it. A have a new official battery in the post to resolve but... didn't anticipate the issues with USB connection etc. Worried the phone might be partially bricked/borked/knackered.
Phone is GSM 16Gb currently on 4.0.2 and totally stock. So no tinkering to date has caused this. Only event that proceeded the issue was the full battery drain.
Any hints / tips / info / moral support gladly accepted.
Really sounds like you're phone was already borked, just waiting for the right time to tell you. You might've hurt it's feelings.

Sounds like it's emotionally scarred from being abandoned for another phone and left in a cold dark danky drawer for half a week.
Have you tried reinstalling the USB drivers?
Also could try factory reset as well as try unlocking it and relocking. Worst case, send it in repair, just tell them it's heartbroken.
Heartbroken, I like it... Worse still I was testing out a Windows Phone. What a phone philanderer I am.
The drawer was nice and dry though I assure you.
How would I install USB drivers?

Assuming you're on a windows since you called it a PC..
Try and see if windows can install it for you.
Go to Start > Run > Enter "device installation" in the search > select "Change device installation settings" > Select "Install driver software from windows update if it's not found on my device"
Many have seen this type of problems, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427539
It's a hardware issue, but is fixable if you want to change the USB port yourself
Thanks.
Then post you link to seems to be about 'phantom' charging when no cable is connected. This is the opposite in a way - it won't charge when turned on at all.
New battery arrived today. No change. Device still trickle charges when powered off, but doesn't charge on mains power, and still will not recognise when plugged into an XP or Linux machine.
Gonna try a factory reset and will update.
Let me know of any ideas and or people with the same issue. I'm still of the opinion I haven't seen a thread with this same issue. Would be happy to be corrected.
Cheers
Well, a factory reset did nothing...
Stuck...
If you read the thread, many have had this exact problem, including myself. For me the phantom charging happened a while after it refused to charge.
What the actual ****...
I just tried what can only be described as the 'toothpick trick' : pushing down the connector nub inside the USB port on the phone et voila, now acting as normal.
I can only describe that as a really ****ty example of workmanship from Samsung.
And it would be after I reset the device as well.
Do you think this one's a definite hardware issue / defect? Seems a crazy thing to happen.
I had the same problem and search as I might, I could find no solution and had to send it in for repairs. The good news is, if you send it directly to Samsung (and dont go through your carrier), they were really fast about it and I had my phone back within a week
Lol, I was the one figuring out the toothpick trick I ordered the phone from clove.co.uk the first week it was released, and had this issue haunt me after a few weeks. As I'm in norway, I was not looking forward to sending it in, so tried to fix it myself. I tried "everything", including short circiut some pins in the plug on purpose, but what finally fixed it for me was to buy a OEM USB Charging board on ebay and replace it myself.
I know, really ****ty QA at Samsung.
Not looking forward to sitting and waiting to see if this is a recurring issue.
How much of a job is replacing the board on the phone?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Not that hard. The phone is easy to pick apart, and you can just "plug" in the new card with two simple connectors.
Turns out it is a recurring issue.
Is this the sort of thing that would be classed as due a replacement phone?

Yes, I know there are many topics on this, but mine is a little different, and this appears to be the most current thread.
I have a galaxy nexus that I got from Google IO last summer. It has worked great until last week. It stopped taking a charge. When I would plug it in with the same plug I have used for months, it would show the lightning bolt, but not charge. I tried the toothpick thing but no luck and ended up breaking the usb port. So, I bought a replacment usb board off ebay and installed that. Now, when I plug the phone in, still no charge, but my computer does recognize the phone.
Then after the 4.2.2 update, I no longer see the lighting bolt, but it still does not charge. I have been charging the battery at night. I cut off the end of a usb cable and use electrical tape to tape the two stripped wires to the battery. But that only provides an 80% charge and doesnt last the whole day.
1) Not a usb port issue, but might be a motherboard issue?
2) Not a toothpick fix
3) Maybe a software issue?
4) Maybe time to buy the Nexus 4?

Galaxy Nexus battery/charging problem?

My phone has been going insane for the last two days. It will think that it is charging when it isn't plugged in. Sometimes it will cycle between not charging and charging at a rapid rate, causing the screen to turn on and stay on (the screen will normally turn on when plugged in). I've tried various resets, battery pulls, etc. This is not a rooted device. If I pull the battery and then reboot the phone, the battery will be 10-15% lower than when I pulled the battery only a minute earlier. Anyone experience this?
This has been happening to a lot of people. It is indeed a hardware problem. There is a way to fix it, what u need to do it reposition the USB female receiving jack ever so slightly.
1) turn the phone off and take the battery out
2) take a toothpick, knife , pin or whatever will fit into the micro USB slot of the galaxy nexus.
3) VERY VERY slowly make it so that the little shelf like connector is in the middle.
4) connect ur phone and it will work like new. This works for a lot of people. I did this a few hours ago and my phone now charges perfect
RECOMENDATION : when it starts to charge you should restore a stock image and lock the boot loader so that you can get a new phone replaced . This is a way to fix it but this hardware issue shouldve never happened in the first place and it should warrant a return. Let me know what happens!

I don't think "doing this a few hours ago" is really a long enough time to say it works perfectly. The same thing happened to my phone and I have seen several people claim this solution fixes the problem. I tried it and it fixed it for about two days but then it came back, and it won't go away now regardless of what I do with the charging port. I am starting to believe there is no solution but to buy a new phone
New glitch spotted when phone is of and in the charger it wil chrage for like 2 seconds and then the animation saays the phone is full!but 2seconda later its charging again so on and so on... sort of chargingloop..

i had the same exact issue try wiping dalvik ,battery stats and cache under recovery, fixed all issued...i think this was caused after using the fast ac charge on francos kernal.
i found a solution.
I had the same problem. at the the begining it didn´t charge. i made hard reset and nothing. i ordered a new battery and nothing. Then i see something different in tee microusb port when i compared it with an xperia x10 port. I realise that the tiny plate inside the port was bended. then with a needle i straighten it, and the charge bolt icon returns to life. But after that some times it comes up without charging conection. Then i found some blog post that said that the "Dock Connector Charging Port Flex Cable Ribbon For Samsung Galaxy Nexus i9250" was the problem. I found a guide to disassemble an change that micro usb port, it is really easy, i made in 30 minutes, even been the first time. I bought the replacement part in ebay (ebay.com/itm/-/130656140500?item=130656140500&viewitem=&ViewItem) but after that i found many web stores with it an cheaper prices.

Sorry, I have been having the same issues with my gnex, after it hits full charge the charging indicator will flash on and off on my screen until I reach 90% on my battery then it will quit the rest of the day.. always does it after hitting full charge so please read what I've done and still have the same problem...... I have used multiple batteries, same problem, I've used different chargers, same problem, I even bought that part off ebay and replaced the charge port inside of the phone, same problem.. and I even tried all of this before receiving the jelly bean update, and even after the update I still have the same charging error issue... does anyone know of any other solutions? I've done them all I think.
I had a very similar issue (the phone would charge ONLY if turned off, computer would not recognize the USB device 90% of the time).
Turns off that fuzz and dandruff had accumulated at the bottom of the USB port (you couldn't see it) so i took a needle and carefully pried it out, it was a nice sized ball of stuff that was preventing the USB port from making clean contact with the cable.
Hope that helps

I am stuck in the same boat as you. I have tried almost everything but it seems that this issue keeps persisting. I don't have warranty so it isn't like I can give it in for replacement. I don't know what else is there to do
I'm going insane reading these.
Google is your best friend in the whole world. Your best friend. If you're out of warranty, the best you can do is use a pogo dock, or replace, like take apart your GalNex and replace the port with a part bought from eBay.
Or, if you look at some of the other 99 threads about this, some people fixed theirs by adjusting the port with a screwdriver or something like that. Can't say I recommend that though.

I don't think there is a problem with USB port. I can charge my phone via the USB connection from my laptop, but the same is not possible when I use he same charger with wall unit charging. Also If I reboot my phone then I can even charge it via the wall unit.
It seems something to do with some app or battery temp.....

Charging issue, phone does not charge at all, bad USB port?

Please help!!
So, for the last couple weeks charging my Note 2 has been extremely hit or miss. It either connects and starts charging, or it doesn't at all. Sometimes, I can plug it in and leave it over night and find it didn't charge at all. Sometimes, as I am trying all sort of different chargers/options, I eventually give up and several hours later I see the screen pop to life and show a charge coming in. I have tried:
4 different cables
3 different AC chargers
2 different computers (multiple USB ports on each)
my car's USB
Seem to have no effect on whether or not it will charge, which makes me believe the issue is either the phones USB port or the battery itself.
Behavior when plugged varies, sometimes:
Completely dead - no response at all
Empty battery icon (with circle in middle) shows on screen, then goes black - never progresses to the battery charging icon (no circle in middle, green showing progress)
Works, progresses to green battery icon.
I'm currently in the first option - completely dead. Whenever I get to the 3rd one, I let it charge a bit then turn the phone on and let it continue charging. At this point it will generally work for a while but whenever I unplug the phone there is no guarantee it will work again, even right after.
Has anyone experienced this? Any experts have an idea I can try?

It sounds to me like you have a broken micro usb port. I went thru this with my note 1. The plastic sleeve on your phone port that the pins sit in is fragile.in my case I discovered I had snapped a pin in half prevent charging, reading the phone via micro usb..I would get a intermittent connection then after a while nothing. you can try to see what happens if plug in a USB and wiggle it in all directions to try and establish contact..in any case your best bet is to go find a universal battery charger..particularly one that charges the battery itself without the phone. (it basically sits inside of a cradle and charges) the pins can be adjusted to make contact on your +,- on your battery. After a charge try it out. they have cheap ones a radio shack that do the job. Its a hassle, but on the bright side is your phone will work. Plus deep cycle charging will make for a healthier battery . hope this helps

Are you using a case on your device? If so, does it in any way encroach on the USB port?
If you are using a case try taking it off and plugging in with the stock charger and cable.
Couldn't hurt, and if the case blocks the port in any way it may be the solution.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
Thanks for the replies everyone, and yes I ordered the battery kit from Amazon, so I should be up and running. At least to revert to stock before sending it to Samsung. But still I would like to find a permanent solution for this if possible.

Yes, this sounds like my problem. Battery pull fixed it for me originally too, but over time it got worse and the problem happened more frequently.
Haven't been able to get it to take a charge all day.
Thought I would update on this weird issue...
I received the Anker batteries/external charger and got the phone working again. Tested charging directly with the phone and new batteries now that it was back alive. No dice. Tested it on and off over the next couple days and still could not get it to charge. So I decided I needed to send it in for warranty replacement, but life got in the way and I continued my cycle of swapping out batteries. This is actually a really nice solution! I like having a couple fully charged batteries ready to go at all times.
Anyway, yesterday I finally had some time and was going to contact Samsung. I was sitting at my desk and decided to try charging one more time. Plugged in the microUSB cable and... IT WORKED! I have no idea why it would randomly start working again, but it has worked for the last 24 hours every time I plug it in.
So now I can't really send it in for service if they can't duplicate the problem. I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope it doesn't happen again...

Wondering if this ever started back up, or if your phone just kept on working. As my phone has stopped all together charging and needed to find a fix for this. Wondering if just replacing the usb charging port in the phone would fix this up. Has someone has done this already to fix this problem. I'm torn between using an external charger and wait for the part to come in from ebay for 12 bucks or just send it in for service and be without a phone for 3-6 weeks.

If you send it in to get it fixed I'll be interested to hear the result (and the price...!)
I've been using an external charger for a couple of weeks now. It's a bit of a pain, but you quickly get used to it.
I'm holding out for the announcement of the Note 3 and hoping that arrives sometime before Christmas!
Well it was the USB port on the phone sent it away already got it back. Telus my provider warranty'd the phone. Did get a quote to fix at a cell shop 70 buckaroo's. Personally just buy it online at ebay for 10 bucks and do it yourself not that hard. Just didn't want to wait for the part to ship and get here
Do you know the process to it... by the looks of it, it seems attached to the motherboard or is it something I can easily do thanks in advance...
Edit...
Sorry wrong thread I meant for the s3 usb port

Phone will not charge / freezes when plugged in

Hey guys,
I just upgraded to a Note II from a Captivate. I've had it for about month completely stock, in the last I'd say 3 days I've been having this really frustrating problem. Whenever I go to charge the phone, it will charge for only a second or two and stop. Sometimes it will go back and from charge, stop, charge stop. But also when this happens the phone freezes up. If I have low battery, every time it stops charging that window pops up stating low battery, but I can never close the window because the phone is frozen. The back and menu haptic buttons will not work as well, the only option is to use the physical home key. I have to restart it several times to get it to charge, and make sure the screen turns off since sometimes it won't.
Has anyone else had any trouble like this? Any advice would be great. Thank you!
Factory reset
This sounds like a physical defect to me, the note 1 was plagued with it. Have you tried wiggling the cord in the slot?
Now that I reread your post I would be taking that device into where you bought it and have them document the issue. Since your stock this is an easy process and having it documented at the local retailer will (according to att customer service) increase your chance of getting a new device over a refurb.

I tried a Factory Reset, I plugged the phone in right after and didn't have any problem so I thought okay maybe that did it. Went through the rest of my day without trying again. Now, trying again before bed only to find that when I plug it in now, it charges for a second, stops, then brings up the notification that the dock has been attached. I'll be taking it back to At&t tomorrow and will report my findings. Thanks for the help thus far.

Was having a similar problem with mine. Okay usually when I would charge it it would stop and then restart. Additionally, I noticed that I could not connect to any computer or USB on the go devices as it would not recognize them. In the end I went with my Samsung phone to the service center near me and they repaired a defective module for the USB port on the spot. Now it works like brand-new.
Honestly this sounds like a bad cable. A dirty in port in the phone. Or a wet connection. Try using rubbing alcohol and qtips or smaller cleaners. Give it a couple minutes to evaporate when done. If that doesn't fix it your phone has internal issues. Stock. Triangle away. Ask for a replacement. Will be fulfilled. Especially if problem is provable.

I apologize for the delayed reply. I waited for the phone to do its charging fit at home before taking it to AT&T....twice...I went to two separate stores because both are so close to me, and BOTH times the phone did not do it while charging in their store. I told them I have been using the Samsung charging cable and block, along with some other from different android phones, and all were giving the either stop / start charge with freeze, or the stop/start charge, "dock is connected," freeze. They told me it must be a bad block, and that the other chargers I am using aren't providing enough amps, hence why the phone gets crazy. I just thought to myself, you've got to be kidding me. So I went back, stopped using the block I got with the phone, I found my girlfriends usb power adapters from one of her old Apple devices (...I know right..) and used that along with the Samsung cable. So far, I haven't had a problem with it. I also tried my neighbor's charger from her S3, and that worked fine when I tried it. The phone does still do the described problem when it's plugged into other chargers, even my car charger. I might try cleaning the port itself as suggested and see if that does anything. Also was suggested by the AT&T rep to get a charger that's "high amp," so I'll give that a try as well. It just doesn't seem normal to have to go through all of that trouble though, I don't think Samsung would make their phone not be compatible with other micro usb charger devices?
All u need is 2000mah. (2amps)

Unresponsive Phone

I bought my Mom a used Inc2 on eBay. Rooted/S-OFF running SlimRom 4.2.2 on Page Plus.
My Mom messages me on Facebook to tell me she thinks the phone is broken. I have to agree. I don't know what she did, but she seems to think she had somehow got the phone into fastboot/bootloader/recovery and was trying to pull the battery to get it back to normal. She thinks she selected something before the battery pull, but doesn't know what.
Phone won't turn on (no splash screen, no boot animation, no nothing).
No LED when phone is plugged in.
Tried several charging cables.
Tried switching with a battery known to work and be charged.
Nothing.
Anyone else ever have a similar issue? Is there any way to repair this (taking apart phone and replacing parts)? Or should I just buy her a new phone?
Pull the battery completely..wait a sec with your finger on the power to completely discharge it ...pop battery back in volumedown +power to get into recovery check to see if she formated anything fix w.e profit perhaps ?

Battery is my guess
My guess was the battery too. Your mom may not have put it back in correctly (My mom sometimes can't see the little gold connectors without her glasses.) Make sure the connectors match up.
If that wasn't the problem, try using a (cell phone) universal battery charger.
(Amazon.com has them for cheap, and they save your life if your usb port ever dies until you can replace the charging port.)
Once you know the battery is charged, and put in correctly, you can tell if it's the phone or not.
If she wiped the system cache, you won't boot. But, you can always try placing a new ROM on the SD card (easiest way is using a desktop computer with an SD card reader,) and re-install the phone's operating system (rom).
Even if the phone is somehow bricked: you can still get her data and pictures off the SD card with any SD card reader connected to a computer.

Thanks for the responses. But alas, it is not a simple matter of battery wrong way. My gf has the same phone and hers works. I tried switching batteries and the one from my Mom's phone works and has about 40% juice in it.
But her phone won't respond at all. When you plug in the USB charger, the LED should come on to signify that the phone is receiving power from the wall/computer/etc... There's nothing.
The phone doesn't turn on at all. I can't get into recovery because it won't power on at all.
She said the phone booted a couple times before I got it, but got stuck on the boot animation and never made it into the actual ROM. Now it won't come on at all. I guess the phone is bricked completely (by no fault of the software - I think this is some sort of hardward issue but I just don't know what)
I guess I'll activate her old phone. Thanks for trying to help.
(I really thought holding the power button without battery in might work because I had used that trick once before, but alas, nothing)
Maybe the power button is dirty try to clean it there's I tear down guide...you won't need to go far into it tho verrrry simple...voids warranty for sure

I thought about that, too... But why wouldn't the LED turn on when connected to USB?
Warranty isn't an issue lol. I bought this thing refurbished on eBay.
Who knows maybe it dropped busting the led and power button...dinc forensics
O yea if not then its hardware software wouldn't make the phone not charge

I have same problem
I have same problem and when i got maintenance center they told me must change the IC flash for phone :crying:
Check the USB port
These phones came out so long ago I imagine original warranty is long gone. I that's the case, might as well open it up and check or fix the power button like chilly suggests.
There are little ribbon cables everywhere inside, for things like the USB port, screen digitizer...and if the phone was dropped, it could have squished the power button, and easily, jarred a ribbon loose. Checking them all out and inspecting the power button might be all you need to do for a fix. At the end of it all, even if nothing is solved, you can sell the phone for parts on ebay and make at least $45.
I thought about doing that once, but I'm glad I inspected mine before I hit the "sell button." I watched some tear-down videos on youtube and decided to give it a go. Now I'm much more comfortable with tinkering with phones. It can be a nice learning experience.
It started when I once tried to plug in my phone in the dark, and I actually managed to cram the USB charger into the phone upside-down!
What this did was make the phone un-chargable, even though the usb cable would still fit in there just fine.
Same symptoms you are having: cord goes in, no light comes on. Yet, the cord charges other phones just fine.
On ebay you can buy new USB ports for about $6-9. I purchased one, found a how-to video on youtube, and repaired mine myself with just a cheap torc x screwdriver set that I purchased for $8.
Fix worked 100%. Don't give up just yet.
