[Q]Wiping Battery Stats? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When wiping battery stats it is best to get the device as charged as you can. I imagine that as with other devices you can do what is known as bumping by charging with the device on until it says fully charged and then turn it off and unplug and then replug until the led turns green again. (then repeat the process by turning on and unplugging and replugging) however, I don't recommend it because overcharging the battery will reduce the overall longevity of the battery. With that in mind it is possible that the battery on the kindle is designed to only charge to 94% in order to prevent overcharging and thereby increasing the life of the battery. In conclusion since you are running gedeROM and are able to see the battery percentage which you don't get to see when you have the stock UI, there is probably nothing wrong with your device, you just have a ROM that doesn't know any better than to tell you the truth which is that the battery is only 94% charged.

it's a misconception that wiping battery stats actually corrects the battery level, or allows your device to charge more. The stats are wiped everytime you charge your device, and as such battery "calibration" apps, don't actually do jack squat. nschiwy is right, it's only going to 94% for a reason, and unless you really want to charge to 100%, you shouldn't need to. Bump charging is the best method for this, as stated before.
Now for curiosity's sake, I believe you can go into TWRP recovery, and either advanced menu or settings menu, then wipe battery stats. Don't quote me on that, I can't remember at present, but that's how you would go about it.

Battery Recalibration

So.... following Mikey1022's thread crusade, I'm almost hesitant to post this here, but I feel like I'm going to get the most accurate answer from the people in this forum vs general...
On Cyanogens site, I found this for Battery Recalibration:

If you're experiencing higher than normal battery drain, try the following:
1. Charge the phone to full battery; let it keep charging until the battery says it is fully charged. Do not wait until the light is green, it isn't always fully charged, causing a lot of inaccuracies. (You can check by going to: Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Battery Level = Full.)
2. Boot to recovery mode and go to console (or adb shell) and type:
mount -a
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin
NOTE: Newer Amon_Ra recoveries have an option to delete the battery stats, do this in place of the console commands above.
NOTE: To have the most accurate of battery stats, reboot the phone immediately after wiping the battery stats and wait for CM to boot completely to the desktop. Once your entire boot is done and you have full access to the phone, go ahead and pull the charger and continue with this troubleshooter.
1. Do not charge the phone until after draining the battery completely, resulting in it automatically shutting off.
2. Recharge the phone completely and then use as you normally would.
SO I'm at work, and don't have the option to check this, but unlike "hardware" battery calibration I'm mostly curious about removing the batterystats.bin
Would it help us with our battery woes, or do ours go deeper? For some reason, I noticed that mine's been draining a LOT faster in the past month or so then before...
Any thought?

I really don't think there's a magic forumula for these LIPO batteries. Unless you have a bad battery, you like numerous others need to join the battery 12 step program. I've already been through it. "Hello, my name is Sean and I'm obsessed with my battery life."
Long story short, just keep charge the battery when it gets low. If you work near an outlet or computer, and sleep near one - it's quite easy to keep the battery up throughout the day.
FYI, I've read up on this a bit regarding laptop batteries. It has nothing to do with the actual battery life or the "memory effect" (these batteries don't have a memory effect). It has to do with the OS's interpretation of the battery's performance and how it is reported to the user. So you're really recalibrating Android, not the physical battery. As far as I've read, this only "needs" to be done once in a great while, once a year maybe. Or if you notice something really odd with the battery level reporting.
I did this this morning as well since my phone was fully charged and ready to try it. Not had any hugely bad side effects from the phone and new battery (1750), but we will see if this changes anything.

Well, actually, that's why I put it in the development forum. These instructions are telling us to remove things from the system. Also on that note, my battery went from being at 30% full by 10pm (fully charged in the morning) to 30% full by 3pm (YES, 3) so something is definitely wrong, not just "I am obsessed with my battery life". Mind you, I'm at work until 2, so my phone drains to 30% on IDLE, with screen off. I was thinking maybe Android is misinterpreting something? I removed all programs that I thought might be causing this, turned off wifi, bt, gps, still no go. Maybe bad battery?
What I'm thinking this may help with is the fully charged issue the incredible has. I wouldn't follow the above instructions exactly however. Let me explain.
If you've ever noticed, the OS doesn't report "fully charged" correctly. Charge your battery to full (where both the green light comes on AND the "about phone" battery status says "Full". Now shut your phone off, you'll notice your light turns orange again, and will charge for about 30 minutes, sometimes more depending on how far off the battery is. If you turn on your phone after this, you'll notice you stay at 100% for quite some time. This is the case with a lot of incredibles from what I've seen... It probably has to do with the calibration notated above.
I would say do the calibration noted above, however, charge it the way I just noted (charge to full, shut the phone off, let it finish charging to full...). Then follow the rest of the steps immediately following. Might make a difference.
EDIT: this is probably even more true for the 1750mAh battery.

I was witness to that thread, and yes, you are correct, Lithium Ion batteries do not need to be conditioned, it is useless... However, we are not talking of conditioning, we are talking of proper reporting of battery life through the OS, which IS how Lithium Ion memory works. This is not saying to Cycle your battery 3 times to "condition" it to full potential. It is stating that the OS is not properly calibrated to report the proper life of the battery. If the OS cuts the charging of a Lithium Ion battery because it "thinks" it is at 100% charge, while the battery itself is at 80% (just a random example), then your battery life is going to appear to be shorter than it should. The example posted above would theoretically reset the OS so that when it says the battery is at 100%, it indeed is at 100%, preventing it from cutting a charge before it should. See my post previous post if you are confused. "Conditioning" is an entirely different animal, in which you "train" the batteries memory (in Nickel cad batteries) before utilizing your battery in normal charging operations. Lithium Ion does not have this memory, making "Conditioning" useless.
Moral to the Story here is to fully charge your phone when its off and you don't have to deal with any of these work arounds. Am I right?
buy a second battery and an external charger. I do this with every phone and I always seam to get battery life that is on the high side of what people report

I'm trying this and I've seen an improvement already on the stock battery. Been off charge for 8hrs and 13 mins and is still at 70% charge. Figures it holds a charge when you want to run it down!

What, exactly, are you trying that's giving the improvement? The OP's suggestion of booting into recovery and deleting battery stats, or the other common suggestion of turning phone off for the remainder of the charge? 70% after over 8 hours is FAR better than I'm seeing, and I'd like to see the same results.

I charged with the phone off, then went into recovery and deleted the battery stats file. Now I'm trying to discharge it completely.

Just tried this method, fully charging the phone when it's off then wiping the battery stats. Hoping it'll fix the annoying problem that the battery doesn't fully charge when the phone is on, although I'm not sure if it even can be fixed -- does anyone know?
I'll update if I remember next time I charge it.

Hey guys. I am also giving this a try today.
I just completely charged my battery last night with it off. This morning I unplugged the charger (while the phone was still off) and plugged back in to make sure that the battery was fully charged. The green light turned orange for a couple of minutes and back to green so I proceeded to boot to recovery and removed the battery file. I am also running a Seidio 1750mah.
I am now up and running. I will post later this afternoon to let you know how it's going.
If this fixes the weird battery bug where the Incredible doesn't charge fully, I will kiss the OP. Seriously.

Could someone explain to me the HOW, WHY, and WHEN you would use this in bootloader?
My battery is sucking hard ever since the latest update of MIUI and i'm hoping this might help if it's used how i think it might be used.
If your battery is losing charge quicker than normal, check if it's the kernel you're using with MIUI and try an alternative. Otherwise, wiping battery stats is like a recalibration to more accurately reflect battery charge. Charge battery to capacity, boot into recovery, wipe batt stats, then reboot, take off charger and run down battery until empty. That should reset your stats.

Should i run it down as quick as possible (ie. Full brightness, playing movie, LED flashlight on, ect...) or run it down with normal use?

Doubt it matters.
Another thing you can do for your battery is a full charge and run down till it dies 3 times. These are "smart" batteries and will reset that and might help you get more from it.
Also remember when flashing a new rom/kernel combo give your phone some time to adjust before judging battery life (maybe 2-3 days).

The batteries in these phones have a memory in the form of a charge monitor circuit. Those circuits remember the charge state of the battery and report it to the phone. This is why it is called a "smart" battery because of the chip that holds this data.
Li-Ion batteries do not suffer from traditional "battery memory" by way of crystal growth and the like (such as with NiCd batteries), but the circuit WILL remember the charge state over time due to the fact that it compensates for the voltage output droop which naturally occurs over time.
The procedure I posted previously was recommended to me by the battery manufacturer to extend battery charge over time.

Hey what's up. I got this G2 with the latest cm7, which is build number 21 and the battery life is horrible. Like 8 hours with an hour of the display being on. I'm coming from the Epic which had pretty good battery life once calibrated.
So what's the proper way of calibrating the G2? I am using the stock kernel that comes with the Cm7 rom right now but I did try the pershoot kernel couple times and underclocked it but it still didn't help. I think all that kernel flashing messed up my battery life. So any ideas? Thanks!

Charge your phone all the way to 100% (not just until the LED turns green, which is around 90%), unplug and boot into recovery, wipe battery stats, boot back into Android and use your phone until the battery drains and your phone shuts off. Keep trying to power up until it won't any more.
Now, plug your phone in (into the wall, not a computer) and charge until full *without* turning it on. Remember, the LED turns green around 90% so you'll need to leave it another few hours after the LED changes. Once you're full, unplug and boot into Android and again use it until the battery is fully drained and you can't power up anymore and you're good to go.
Remember, after wiping stats, during the draining process *do not* plug it in to the charger or your computer as thiss will mess up the calibration.
Its a pain, and takes a day or so, but its worth it. To speed up the draining process, do some process intensive things (video watching, game playing, etc.)

Thanks for the tip. Now I have been doing some reading and saw some people recommended charging the phone while it is on when it is fully discharged the first time. You recommend while its off? Does it make a huge difference?

I don't think it would make that big of a difference; if you think about it though, you're dealing with the battery and battery only if the system is turned off.

True we are dealing with the battery but when we wipe the battery stats I think it only wipes the battery information the phone had in its system. So if we wiped the stats when it is full then let it discharge till completely empty, im assuming, you would have to charge it while its on so the phone can now learn what the battery level is and when its full and its capacity. I'm just guessing I could be wrong though. I'm just going to try both and see what happens.

I have used this method to calibrate the battery and can say that it does have a pretty big impact on battery life. +/- 20% in my case. I also find that I need to re-calibrate roughly once every month or so.
To be clear, there is not such thing as "calibrating the battery", you are calibrating the battery meter (volt meter) on the phone. Maybe its just a semantic distinction, and that is what the OP and subsequent replies are talking about. But many people get this confused, due to the old process of "conditioning" NiCad batteries, which is not applicable to modern cell phone (Li ion) batteries.
In my understanging, you aren't going to increase battery life by doing any of the above, but only making the battery meter more correctly read how much power is left. For instance, if the meter is not properly calibrated, it may read lower than it should. So people think they are increasing their battery life.
I would discourage from discharging the battery to empty. Over discharge of Li ion batteries can possibly (not often, but in a small percentage of cases) prevent the battery from taking a charge. There is a safety circuit which is supposed to prevent over discharge, but it does not always work. Therefore, Li ion batteries should not be discharged lower then 20% whenever possible. Most of us do it from time to time on accident, but there is not reason to do it intentionally. Charge the battery to 100%, drain to 20%, and repeat a couple times. This will get your battery meter plenty accurate. Draining it to empty does not really gain you anything (the battery meter is not that accurate in the best of circumstances, anyway), and can harm the battery.

Flashing a new ROM resets the battery meter. So until its properly calibrated, it will give you junk readings. This is one reason why people often jump the gun and think that a custom ROM is getting them poor battery life. Calibrate the meter, and use the ROM for a couple days, then you should get a real indication of what the battery life is like on that ROM.

I was about to post this. Letting a LiIon discharge all the way is more harmful to the battery than recharging it mid drain cycle.
I'm having a bit of battery issues, I haven't flashed a ROM or calibrated my battery meter. So I charge my phone to full while still on, unplug it and drain it until it turns off (NOT until the battery is completely drained, which could potentially damage the battery), plug it up and let it charge while off, and I should be calibrated?
Do you need to have root to be able to reset battery stats?

[Q] Weird battery discharge

Hi fellas..
Maybe you've noticed the messages I've sent to Unofficial BravoS thread of Coolexe's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200517&page=51) which is the ROM I use.
The issue is, the battery discharges rapidly. Actually, if you check mV values, it doesn't discharge rapidly, but if you look at percentages, there is a huge inconsistency. I used Battery Monitor Widget to log the battery performances last night, and saw these horrible results:

These are the last lines of the log, before the phone shuts down. As you can see, the phone gone to 0% from 34% in one minute! No low battery warnings or whatsoever..
Funny thing is, this doesn't happen in StarBurst ROM (which is a Froyo based one). Do you reckon this is a GingerBread issue or something? I saw some other people complaining about their phone shutting down at 20% as well.
So, what do you suggest?
when you look at the voltage there isnt that much drain, so its only a displaying problem
wipe battery stats and maybe recalibrate the battery
but first one should fix it

Drained battery to 0% (log above) and charged it a little bit while powered off (like 20%). Turned on the phone, and obtained those logs (last lines only):

It seems more "smooth" discharge now. Right now, I'm charging my phone off; going to turn on phone once it reaches "green light" with charger on, and plug it off once phone booted. Maybe then, it can know what's maximum and minimum.
So far, I tried to charge my phone to full and erase batterystats.bin but, as you can see at the first post, it didn't work well.. On the other hand, the phone charged-discharged only once in this ROM, you think it could be better if I've given a "second chance"?

only thing i want to say is, dont do that deep drains!
recharge at least 5%! you kill your battery, lithium-ion batterys get serious damage from deep drains

I know, but when phone thinks it's 30% and not warn me, how can I do it?
In order to calibrate the battery meter - FYI the battery itself cannot be calibrated, as Li-Ion batteries have a very low memory compared to old Ni-Cd etc. batteries - you have to go through the following procedure:
1) charge the battery to 100%;
2) let the battery discharge until the phone shuts itself down;
3) plug the wall charger into the phone, boot the phone up then charge the battery to 100% without interruptions.
If the above procedure does not yield the expected results, you can try fully charging the phone (LED showing green) with it completely turned off (after completely draining it). Again, the charging procedure should not be interrupted.
Source: personal experience - had to do this twice after installing new ROMs, as the phone was shutting down at ~14% (working like a charm now).
Regarding the matter of battery wear because of complete discharges, Li-Ion batteries do indeed have a lower cycle count than old-school batteries, but the standard charge/discharge number a Li-Ion battery can take is ~350, so you can't damage the battery pack by doing a full cycle per month (required to keep the battery meter accurate).

Today I realized that it my concern was a quick one. Today, I discharged battery to 0 percent, plugged the AC charger while it's OFF and charged it for around 2h22m until Led-green-full; then turned on the phone with charger plugged and plugged it off just after the boot process. After that, I let the phone to discharge (I helped it a little )
I actually saw "Plug your charger" warning this time, and according to Bat. Mon. Widget, it gone down until 13%! If I do compare the mV values with the old ones, I can see that somehow the phone does learn which mV value correspond to which percentage better.
Even though it gone from 13% to 0% in two minutes, it's at least better than 30% to 0%.. Also, when I check the readings after I plugged in, I saw that percentage-voltage matching is slightly higher, showing that the phone now shows lower percentage for the same voltage - which shows that it learns percentage better.
After one or two charge-discharge cycle, I think it'll learn absolute 0
BTW; the battery says 3.4V 1400mAh and my maximum voltage is 4160mV (100%) and minimum is 3415mV (0%). Are these values normal, you think?
PS: What I'd recommend from anyone who loves flashing ROMs as much as I do is: AFTER YOU FLASHED A NEW ROM, CHARGE YOUR BATTERY TO FULL (100%) AND ERASE THE BATTERY STATS. AFTER THIS, NEVER, I SAY, NEVER ERASE YOUR BATTERY STATS FOR LONG TIME IN ORDER FOR YOUR PHONE TO LEARN STATS BETTER! Erase after long time, say 3 months for wear effects to be accounted, but well, I think you should be fine even after you don't do this

EDIT: Phone shutdown at 13% after this, but I think it'll do better in time..
Can't Calibrate the Widget
I am having a similar issue with my htc aria. Problem is that it gets to about 78% and then won't go any higher. It even shows (in Battery Monitor Widget)
"Discharging" and "AC plugged". I have let it sit plenty long enough to be fully charged and then completely discharged it (until it shut itself down, which was not 0%) and recharged until it reaches 78% again and stops charging. I'm guessing it is so far out of whack that it says I'm at 78% but I am really at 100%.
The widget says to charge to 100% and then drain completely to 0% to calibrate. I can't do either from what I can tell. So what to do?

Quick tip - let the phone charge for another hour or so after the light goes green (when charging it while powered off). I've read that the light goes green at about 95%. It takes another hour for the phone to really charge to 100%. That's because Li-Ion batteries use two stages to charge: a fast one and a slow one. More details here.

P.S. - It also took me two complete charge/discharge cycles to fully calibrate my battery meter after switching from FroYo to Gingerbread.
@vkyjackie - Try fully charging the phone while powered off. If it still doesn't fully charge (LED green), then you might have an issue with either the battery pack or the wall charger.

I just wiped battery stats. I let it drain fully, charged it fully. Unplugged for 5 secs and plugged back in light still charging for at least 30. I've on my third time. Just wondering if things are different with the incredible 2 battery. It didn't take this long with my eris. Basically, my phone has turned to fully charged within in 30 seconds or sooner. Wondering if i'm doing something wrong.

On the Inc1 I would do as follows...
- Charge phone fully with bump charge
- While phone was bump charged and charger still plugged in, boot into Recovery and wipe stats
- Reboot into ROM and unplug cable and use the phone until it was completely drained, not even able to boot.
- Plugged in charger and turned on phone.
Thats all you should need to do. To be honest I dont feel battery recalibration is important anymore because after constantly wiping stats I noticed that battery wear doubled. If you are changing from ROM to ROM then the stats should automatically wipe themselves over time.

Calibrating your battery doesn't improve battery in any way. It merely seeks to reset how the battery reports it's usage to the OS, since over time with normal charge/discharge cycles, the battery stats adapt to the user and reporting accuracy is degraded slightly. It's good to do on a periodic basis to correct this.
