All I want to be able to do is install and use Titanium Backup. Can this be done without the whole bootloader unlock / install CWM recovery / Flash SU method?
This is for a GSM GN from the Google Play store.
No. Not that know of exploits like that don't work anymore. But you can just unlock, flash a recovery, flash superuser. Then flash the stock recovery and relock the boot loader.

the only way you can do that is if you're on 4.0.2, but i would bet you are on 4.0.4

Just 'fastboot boot cwm.img', flash "su.zip", reboot, done.

Wouldn't recommend relocking the bootloader. He'll just have to wipe again next time he needs to unlock.

I would NOT recommend it either.
However, if he feels like he really has to re-lock, we now have a method that can unlock the bootloader without wiping, assuming you have root of course. (But if you ever lose root... you are screwed!
EDIT: I didn't realize that the OP had a Play Store device. Although I don't have one, the Play Store devices are said to NOT wipe when the bootloader is unlocked.

Thanks for the info. And just an FYI, my Play Store device does wipe data when I unlock the bootloader. Not a huge deal, but it does reset it to factory state.

some people have said it didnt wipe when they unlocked the bootloader when they got theirs from the playstore.
i always assume its going to wipe everything.
I had no idea that unlocking the bootloader would wipe everything, but I knew I had to unlock it first in order to root it so I could backup all my apps with Titanium Backup, so guess what happened..
The thing is, if I hadn't done that, I would have waited for the official Jelly Bean from Samsung for quite a while, for my yakjuxw variant...
Pfff. Everything about this whole affair with ROMs, rooting, backing up, seems so weird and counter-intuitive to me. I just don't understand it!

I just dont like seeing the opened lock icon below the google logo when the phone boots up, But i just want root, and the stock recovery for future ota
So Rooting it and re-locking the bootloader doesn't limit the root functionality right?
and is there a possibility of having root + CWM + Locked bootloader ?
will CWM work that way ?
Plus whats the procedure to unlock bootloader without wiping device if your device has root + locked bootloader?

Well my previous phone was an android which was never updated officially after eclair. Running Cm7 ports kinda lagged the phone which was pretty noticeable after 24 hours or so,
So i used to reboot it everyday to clear memory. and yeah, I guess old habits die hard and i just love the jellybean boot up animation, so no reason not to reboot it, and thanks a lot for your replies

Yeah, i felt it was cool too for the first 3 months of having the Gnex but recently, Every friends non-google device i see (specifically the s2 or the s3) has the triangle on the splash screen, When they see my phone start up without the unlock symbol, they're all like "whoa dude, you still haven't modded your phone?"
then i'll go like "Nah, Why should i do that when i have the purest android ever and there's no need to mod this fast beast"
Long story cut short, i just wanna show off how awesome pure android is

Hello all. Well after many many years with Sprint they finally got on my last nerve and now I am a new Verizon customer and a very happy new owner of the Galaxy Nexus. Awesome phone! Anyway my question is I have been told the bootloader of this phone is locked. I have never messed with a phone with a locked bootloader. While I was with Sprint I had the Epic 4G Touch so I am familiar with Odin, CWM, flashing roms, etc. What is the preferred method to altering the Nexus to be able to root, CWM, flash roms? Also what is currently considered by most to be the best rom that leaves the phone with all of its functions working? Thank you in advance for any information you folks can offer.

Unlock the boot loader firstly but beware it will wipe your sdcard.
Use fast boot to unlock it, type oem fastboot unlock and go from there.
Flash cwm using fastboot by typing fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img (xxxxx.img is whatever the filename is)
You are probably familiar with cwm so I won't bother explaining that.
All the rooms here have everything working on them. We'll except sense 4.0 and touchwiz ports etc. But that's obvious.
Ps. All phones have locked bootloaders!
Yeah, you might mean unlocked bootloader. You do have to unlock it first, but it doesn't take an exploit to do so. See here for a starting point:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400871
As for the best rom, impossible to say, so many . It depends on what exactly you're looking for. aokp is probably the most features-popular, but there are many others. I use cm9 with the reloaded mod, personally.
sent from my Zerg Hatchery.
Ok I used the Toolkit 5.5 to unlock, root, CWM etc. Seemed easy and effortless. I have now installed AOKP Rom on my Nexus. What do I need or need to know in order to return my phone to box stock say incase I have to take it to Verizon for any reason?

Options 8 (Extract and Flash Google Factory Stock ROM), 10 (Reflash Stock Recovery [just to be safe]), and 11 (Relock bootloader) will return it all to stock. I know, because I just had to do this to 3 GNex's this past week to send them back to Verizon
Looks like your question was answered, but for me, I used Wugfreshes toolkit to root then to unroot, just click unroot, let it do its thing and then click OEM lock to make it factory.

My apologies, I totally forgot to update my signature. I do not have the GSII anymore.
Can anyone point me int he direction of the box stock rom file I need to work with Toolkit to restore my phone? I followed the directions and got the image from code.google.com but it wont install. ALways says something is missing.
Toolkit says the file shouls end in .tgz but the file I am downloading from Google does not say that. My phone is 4.0.2 (ICL53F) and that is the file I am downloading from Google's image site.

I believe that the toolkit will auto download if you just run the option.
So I love my new Galaxy Nexus but want to remove the search bar and get to improve 4 x 5 icons on homescreen. One problem though, I don't want to unlock the bootloader!
I know you can re-lock it later but I just don't want to unlock it full stop, I know I'm being difficult!
Here is my idea on how to do this, do you think it will work?:
Downgrade to 4.0.2 stock factory image
Use the root without unlocking bootloader exploit
Use OTA Rootkeeper
Use OTA update service to upgrade to 4.0.4 and retain root & locked bootloader
Install CWM
Install home screen fix (to remove search bar and get 4 x 5 icons)
Do you think that will work!!?
Uh, why don't you just download a launcher that lets you do 4x5 icons?
and btw your plan fails at #1. You'd have to unlock to flash the 4.0.2 images.
If you really want to root then why don't you unlock the bootloader and do it? Sure it wipes but there are plenty of ways to back up before doing so...

That's not being difficult that's just being straight up stupid for no reason. Why do you even care? It makes absolutely no sense. I reboot my phone like once a month at most, who cares if for 3 seconds there's a padlock icon at the bottom of the screen? I've heard a lot of the usual reasons for not unlocking the bootloader (like it wipes the device), but this is just irrational.
Just unlock the bootloader, flash what you want, and relock the bootloader. Seriously ridiculous. Jesus Christ people....

Back up your sdcard to your computer, as unlocking will wipe that. As far as the Google Wallet question, I am not sure. I've never had an issue with it.

If you've been using your phone before your unlock the bootloader, then back up your "/mnt/sdcard" because it will be wiped when you unlock bootloader.
You must reset Google Wallet from within the apps settings. Open the app and go to settings>reset wallet. This MUST be done before you do a factory reset, unlock the bootloader, or flash a ROM otherwise you run the risk of breaking the NFC secure element for wallet.

[SOLVED] I followed this thread to get everything updated and make sure I was all stock, and then went to bootloader and ran fastboot flashing lock to relock the bootloader. Everything working great now.
I'm trading my Verizon Pixel XL for a normal Pixel, and need to relock the bootloader first. I haven't installed a custom kernal or ROMs or anything, so can I just lock via fastboot safely?
I don't want to do something that will brick it!
I'm aware this is stupid and I'd rather just leave it, but dude is sketched out by warning on startup and won't trade till it's gone :/

[Edit] it should maybe be noted that I haven't installed any updates since rooting, and I'm not sure if those are important first or not?

Quick question:
I unlocked and rooted my RP, everything worked flawlesly, but I don't like the "advise" that appears at the bootloader every time I reboot the phone.

I believe to relock the BL, you are doing so with the effort to roll back to unadulterated stock.
Therefore primitive response to your question is No.
Flash the stock firmware from your phone then relock after your first boot.

If you relook and still have a modified boot partition, anything that doesn't match the key signature stored in the EFI won't be able to load. Basically if it's not stock it won't load, ie won't boot and it'll give you a message about unable to boot instead.
Thanks a lot for all the answers!!!
I'm glad I didn't relocked it before waiting for answers, thank you!!!
