Galaxy Nexus... a dust magnet?!?!?!?! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is it just me, or does the GNex screen attract lint like bees to honey? I find myself carrying a cleaning cloth because of the noticeable amount of lint that clings to the touchscreen.
Anyone else come across this? Any remedies? ...maybe it's just my jeans lol
My last phone (the G2x) didn't have this problem whatsoever.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Check the lint filter in your dryer. It's your jeans.

If it actually was attracting dust you'd be shocking yourself on your phone all day. If however your Nexus does generate static electricity then I'd be concerned.

No problems here.

Holy dust batman!! Easy fix for you.. Don't wear pants! Totally acceptable in public btw .

Pretty normal here, my GS2 used to be a pain compared to the nexus.
However (and completely off topic) I'm pretty amused by how easy it is to scratch the (awesome) screen. Never thought a phone of this importance would ship with such a crappy screen on it. I knew it was not gorilla glass when I bought it, but damn, feels like ANYTHING can damage this thing.
I now have a 1 Euro coin stamped on the upper right hand corner. Just great.

Mine always has fingerprint smudges, dust etc on the screen. It got to a point that I don't even worry about it anymore. I just clean it every couple of days or so. It doesn't last of course.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Mine does gather a little dust under the edges of the case but nothing a quick wipe doesn't take care of.
I beg to differ about the screen durability though, it hardly smudges in comparison to my old U8800 or my Asus TFP and I'm yet to find even light scratching despite some brushes against metal buttons etc. *touch wood*.
Very happy GN user here

Mine doesnt gather dust, although perhaps its because I have a screen protector on it so maybe that helps it out.

Just need to wash them dirty jeans

I like Samsung phones because the screen is sealed so dirt from outside can't get underneath the screen. Though I guess that might make it harder to change digitizer though I haven't have broke any screens yet.
I use screen protector and TPU case, I don't really worry about dirt. Usually an easy wipe from the palm is enough if there are dirt.
You could try the XGear EXOSkin. The slippy surface of the skin maybe prevent dirts sticking.

without a case...my nexus is not a bad dust magnet at all
on the second day I had my nexus, a huge huge huge spider landed on my shoulder outside, my phone flew about 8 feet up in the air...totaling a drop of about 14 feet onto solid concrete. Luckilly it was in my trusty ballistics case I got in the mail the same day as my phone, it came out totally unscathed. After that (and the whole US-ban issue) im afraid to even take it out of the case at all...
Upon further inspection of the ballistics case, I actually found a very small device embedded in the rubber that does not attract dust...but actually creates it from the surrounding non-phone matter (mainly just air molecules as my pants seem fine). Im gonna call the local news stations tomorrow, this will probably be bigger news than the higgons boson.

I think your paranoid most screens gather dust.

My TPU case loves dust and things.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

I actually commented on this exact topic to my mom recently. My inc2 never seemed to have more than the standard finger smudges on its screen. I clean my gnex all nice with a soft cloth, set it down, and five minutes later it looks like I haven't cleaned it in a week with all the dust on it. I don't know why, but it definitely makes dust more noticeable, if it doesn't attract it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Jeez, if it isn't hardware failure or software, it's something else. Now it's the dust and smudges. You people are paranoid.
Sent from my i9250

I have not noticed more on my Nexus than previous phones.

No one is going to get you because you own a Galaxy Nexus. The ban was only for new phone sales. You're fine, no need to hide it as if you're going to be arrested for using a banned phone because Apple patented something.

Screen scratch! :( The coating is crap.

My screen is scratched after 3 days of using it in the house and I have OCD with my phone! the worst thing i did was put it in my pocket and take it out.
I have had a galaxy S2 for over 6 month and not had a scratch :/ this one is quite deep

It's also a fingerprint magnet!
OUCH! What is that!? Pure plastic screen a'la 1999? That just does'nt seem right i'm gonna be super scared using mine, whenever i get it that is, slow supplier

Order the screen protector now mate whilst waiting for the phone
Firstly, In my own experience the phone is not a fingerprint magnet at all. It's very good for keeping fingerprints to a minimum. (coming from HTC Desire which loved fingerprints)
As for the scratch. Holy ouch! That looks like a very severe and stark scratch. I'm not sure that would happen just in general use 'around the house'. Did you leave it on a diamond or a piece of carbon or sand grit in your pocket? Do you have any idea what caused that damage to the glass? IT was obviously a very hard and very sharp material.

Maybe I was exaggerating the fingerprint then but it does seem to attract them :/
And honestly, I have jeans on and they aren't tight, I have put it in my pocket to walk from one room to the next. It hasn't touched anything sharp or grazed off anything all I know is I am gutted
Also before I got rid of my S2, I hammered it with a pen and a key to try and scratch it and I didn't :/
I'm sorry for the scratch man. I hear you. I would be the very same. All I can think is that there was a tiny bit of grit in your jeans pocket. bits of grit like a grain of salt are more dangerous to a phone screen than a Stanley blade because they are sharp right down to a few molecules in width.
I kept my phone in a microfibre bag when I got it, until I could replace it with something like a pouch. It wasn't ideal but it was some sort of barrier between my phone and anything that might be in my jeans or trouser pockets.
I bought a microfiber lined Alcantara pouch since then and keep it upright in my pocket so it should keep any grit in my pockets away from the screen.
What will you do now? Is it insured? Maybe you could "lose" it in a month and replace it with new one and buy a pouch. It's nice of you to provide a warning to others. I think salt/sand/grit are the biggest danger guys. Beware whats in your pocket.

I have a logo on my jeans pocket I wondering if it was that? It is a 3 contract and can be returned within 14 days .. I still have the protectors it came with how rigorously will they check it if I can "no longer afford the contract"? I haven't used the Sim or accessories btw, I have been using my S2 things with it
Ps, where did you get your pouch please?
does you logo use rivets? Also a riveted logo around waist could've been.the culprit. Check to see if coming lose as they can be very sharp. Still don't see the fingerprint thing. Even before I put screen protector. Do you have an extra micofiber pouch for sunglasses? They are cheap if you don't. Something is better than nothing.

OUCH! I dropped mine from shirt pocket to road and the back came off but not one single scratch...... I can't see anything non-metal making that scratch!
I'm picky as hell when iit comes to having scratches on my screen. Besides a screen protector, I never clean the screen with.Windex, paper towels or even rags. Goto WalMart and pick up a tub of Armor All Glass Wipes. I keep one in my house and car and have never had a scratched screen by using them. I also believe since they don't leave as much lint as paper towels, you may not get the dust under the screen issue you see in other posts.

Could be that logo (depending upon material), but there are only a few specially tempered (and carbon-enriched) metal alloys hard enough to scratch glass. Check out the other threads on this topic for more. A ring of almost any gemstone would be sufficient as rubies, emeralds, sapphires, topazes, diamonds, garnet, alexandrites, aquamarines, etc. are ALL harder than silica/quartz (glass).
I also noticed that I had a 1cm scratch at the top of my phone this morning and it was quite deep. I cant remember if anything else was in my pocket with my phone but I dont have any diamond tipped keys and I dont usually walk around with sand in my pockets lol. Anyway it was quite noticeble and im not going to stare at that for the next 2 years, and luckily I had a returns bag already from phones4u so I rang them up and as its within 28days of purchase Im still entitled to an immediate replacement so the phones gone off and I should get a brand spanking new phone next week
In the mean time I shall be ordering a zagg screen protector to put on it as soon as it gets here to keep it scratch free in future
Mark.

Dropped the phone today, no case, no screen protector!

Walking down the hall today carrying my laptop and phone, wasn't even thinking and phone slipped out and dropped on the ceramic tile floor.
It has no case and no screen protector.
It fell from slightly above waist high.
When I picked up the phone, the back plate had 2 notches that were partially unseated at the top of the phone. I re-seated them and inspected the phone closely. NO DAMAGE!!
Not a single scratch on the screen and no scratches on the body, whew!
Way to go Samsung!
Glad to hear there were no casualties today

Or just a case since most cases have front parts to prevent screen damage.
First phone I actually use a screen protector and case on.
I came from a LG G2x and a Blackberry (personal and work). Maybe I'm freaked out about not having a fall back anymore. But the phone is thin enough that a case doesn't add too much more.

Agreed, simply because cases provide a better grip to the phone especially for such a big phone.
I had a similar situation and dropped it in the bathroom floor from my pocket. 1 or 2 notches came off the back cover. Everything else is fine.
I dropped my Nexus S on the street and result 2 quite noticeable notches on the corners , I guess the surface was pretty hard and rough. At least I was lucky enough for the screen which is without a protector results fine.
Dropped every single phone I've ever had once or twice, my Desire is destroyed, I keep it as a spare, my Hero survived with minor wear marks, my SGS2 had one tiny scratch on the screen and a few marks around the edges of the phone, my month old Galaxy Nexus so far is spotless, touch wood.
I have a very very faint half inch long scratch near my earpiece. Thinking about getting a case. Probably not, I don't like them. I still need to get the spare battery.

I'm not rocking a case either and haven't really has a serious drop or anything yet (knock on wood) but one thing I have noticed is the gray material around edge and back (not the back rubber cover) is completely terrible. The slightest of dings takes chunks out of it. Why would they use such a cheap material that has no durability at all?
Also I've see several people taking keys to their display on YouTube. Are they aware that this screen isn't Gorilla Glass? I have some very faint hairline scratches on my screen that can't be seen unless looked at certain angles but it definitely isn't scratch resistant especially considering I haven't don't anything really that would cause the scratches. Still don't even know how they got there. Don't put phone in pocket with keys or usually anything and never lay face down.

True it does not have gorilla glass but it has sammys version of it. You wont get glass scratches from keys, you get that from dirt or sand making its way into your pocket and rubbing against the screen. As far as the plastic goes, that doesnt do so well when marked with keys
My heart would have stopped if that happened. I don't get cases because I feel I'm that much more secure with them, but most cases tend to give me a better grip- which I'd want anyways. I've not gotten a screen protector yet, as I haven't found one that I like. I want one that provides scratch resistant qualities, but isn't gummy like invisible shield.
Whilst staggering home on new year's eve I dropped mine onto the road, I have two little chips on one corner but other than that, no damage. (No case, no screen protector)
I was so disappointed with myself the next day but then I realised how incredibly lucky I was that it didn't suffer any more damage, especially the screen!
This may sound dumb but if you don't have a screen protector, avoid putting the phone face down. I believe that - along with picking up the phone carelessly whilst face down contributed to my extremely small scratch.
Sent from stall 3 in company bathroom.
I'll try to be as helpful as possible: Hot.
Their is no way I could feel safe sporting this phone without a screen protector, but I have noticed that after dropping it twice on concrete, there are no visible marks. There is however, a slight hairline scratch on the screen from the first 12 hours I had it before I installed the screen protector and also before it was dropped.

Otterbox Commuter rant!!!

So I've had my Gnex for about 2 weeks now, was in a commuter case the whole time. Today, I drop it on the pavement, no sharp objects or rocks protruding out. It dropped from my hand, about waist level, and went forward about a metre or two. And guess what, the screen is completely cracked! cracks running from the bottom to the sides, to the top, a small chunk of screen missing right above the notification LED. Otterbox, I'm very very dissappointed!! Samsung too.. I dropped my desire z multiple times on pavement/concrete, no harm done. Unbelievable...
so let this be a warning to commuter users! anyone have similar experiences?
I have the same case and dropped my phone multiple times. My phone has survived every accidental drop with no scratches, cracks, etc......yet. The Commuter case is also in good condition with no blemishes on it other than the usual lint.
Ugh so I just had bad luck.. it was the very first time I dropped it too.

lol nah.. i would have seen. I went back to where I dropped it today... flat concrete, no protrusions/ pebbles. but judging from the screen cracks it looks like there was one area of impact, and a small chunk of screen is missing from there, and most of the cracks radiate from there outwards. really scratching my head here..
anyways, I bought a new screen.. if that one cracks I'm just going to be sad.
I use the same case and dropped my phone a few times hard and it was fine. I too am thinking it must have been some hard protruding debris the screen fell in to. One more reason for me to get a glass screen protector.

were any of your drops face down and onto pavement/concrete? i looked at a video where the guy did a 4-foot face-down drop with no screen onto a block of flat cement and the lcd didn't even work afterwards
My question is; did Otterbox ever claim that your phone would be invincible with the Commuter? If the company said that, there would be no more Otterboxes. In nearly any case, a fall could shatter the screen. It happened on my iPod touch, on my original Droid. It doesn't matter what case is on. Glass smacking the floor with result in a fall.

falls onto flat surface? facedown? I'm trying to get an idea of if this kind of thing would happen if it were dropped onto a flat suface, or because there was a small rock or something that actually impacted the screen. i'm leaning towards the protrusion idea
attached some pics. the missing chunk is just at the bottom of the screen protector. the chunk of glass below that originally looked fine, just two cracks on either side, but it's white now- guess it got loose over the weekend.
any forensic glass experts? opinions?
I returned my commuter case last week, thing is a lint collector/insanely bulky vs the reviews it has on Amazon.
Yes two of the drops were face down...one on solid concrete and the other on the hardwood floor. It seemed to be saved by the lip on the case which I admit is pretty thin compared to say my ballistic case.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
ahh so the commuter saved them then? I want to know that my case was caused by an errand pebble, not the commuter failing to protect the screen with the lip. I don't want to smash my new screen again. then I'll be the biggest idiot in town..

I had a very similar drop and result last week. I had mine in a diztronic case and an xo skin, and the screen shattered. I guess I should get a tougher case, but if the same thing happened with the commuter, and so many people use diztronic with no problem, it might have just been bad luck/physics. Like you, there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary about my drop.
Truthfully the commuter is advertised as a light duty case and the defender the heavy duty. You could upgrade to a ballistic or Agesis case, but neither case may help if the screen hits a rock. I'm going to be getting the glass screen protector for that reason.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
No case will protect the phone from a direct impact on the screen.
Even a small pebble on the ground that sticks up higher than the case's lip will crack it. Falls from less than 2 feet probably wont matter if you have a screen protecter or an otterbox defender, but a shoulder - height fall is probably the end of your device if the screen is directly impacted.
was this outside too?

[POLL] Galaxy Nexus Wear and Tear Poll!

Hey all,
If you know me from the Thunderbolt subforums, you know about my polls! I think it's fascinating to survey other people about their Android devices, and today is no different.
I use an Incipio Silicrylic case with my new Galaxy Nexus, however it feels so much better, lighter, dare I say awesomer naked.
So have at the poll, folks!
Come on, I'm ready!! Lol

Thanks for making the poll, I also love to see surveys on how others are fairing with their Nexus's. For me I have one tiny little scratch on the bezel right above the screen. Though to see it you have to catch it in just the right light with the phone at a certain angle so it doesn't bother me at all. Got it after I decided to take off my screen protector and switch to a thin case (Cruzerlite's Androidified TPU) since the new Nexus is coming out soon. And I figured if I do somehow get a deep enough scratch to bother me I can always just fill it in with on XO Skin =)
I've dropped my phone a few times, it just bounces and all is well.
Phone is unblemished except a few scratches on the screen protector.

Not a mark anywhere on my all naked 10 month old GN!
Naked but put on my Incipio case (rubber and plastic combo) for work. I had a screen protector for a while, but I can't handle it even if there's one dust particle under the protector. One or two minor scratches, but only seen at weird angles. I honestly didn't expect this thing to be so tough. Haha!

I'm pretty darn strict when it comes taking care of my devices. Mostly due to the fact that I won't have the money to get another one. In general, I just like to take care of the things that I have. That said, my Nexus is used (no case) and thus has a couple teeny tiny crumb size knicks on the bottom left and right.9.9/10. Can't see them unless the phone is up to your face. Screen is flawless. As for dropping it, only once I BELIEVE, but it was on the carpet.
×*Don't Stress Too Much Over Android. Just Get A Device That You Like & Make Sure That It Has Good Development*×
Mine has done fine mostly naked except screen protector. Only damage occurred from a violent drop on concrete...or well, not so much a drop as a collapse of the pile of boxes I had the phone placed on top of, throwing it onto concrete....so yeah, there's a scuffed corner or two.
I just bumped it so people would see it, it went to page 2, but replies are welcome too!
You guys can see poll results, right? Looks like scratches on the screen are almost as common as no scratches on the screen.... It's not Gorilla Glass, right? Some reinforced alternative?
I have a hairline scratch on the screen only visible when the screen is off and at a certain angle. Still irks me at times though
Top left part of the screen is pushed in a bit, by about a millimeter... came like that :/ otherwise perfect
With all the reports of scratching, I'm starting to think a case isn't necessary.
As far as I'm concerned, a case isn't worth it if the phone is damaged, I would never bother with a case on a used phone.

You're talking about the TPU case on Amazon with the Android on the back that comes in like 6 different colors? How is it? I hear it has a wrist strap loop on like the upper right hand corner (bad spot, no?), but it looks like the thread or whatever would be crammed between the case and the GalNex...
Interesting results, folks... Bumping this for everyone's benefit (arguably everyone's benefit...).
Mine has a couple of nicks on the lower left corner. They look like a cat tried to bite into it (which is probably what happened) because I've only had this phone for 3-4 weeks and haven't dropped it.

Just how fragile is our GalNex?

For those of you that use your GalNex naked (haha no I mean you have clothes on and the phone is naked), you obviously set it down on surfaces of all sorts, wood, granite, plastic, erc.
So does the act of setting your phone down on various surfaces damage it at all, screen up or screen down? Is any of that Verizon/4G LTE/Samsung lettering on the back scratched or rubbed off at all? It doesn't look like any part of the camera would make contact with said surfaces.....?
Kind of a silly question, but I've been paranoid since the Droid Incredible camera-sticks-out thing.

i'm on my 3rd screen in a year. BUT!!!! i drop this freak'in phone all the time, and to me......it's worth the fix. best phone i've ever owned. i'm hoping samsung and google do another GNex. because LG isn't my cup of tea
Wouldn't a case be easier (and cheaper) than buying and replacing 3 screens? How much are they?

My phone falls down all the time (yep, often on concrete) and doesn't have a single scratch. I'VE THE MAGIC UNBREAKABLE NEXUS! xD
The one thing that seems to have an effect on my GNex is sand...
I've put it in a pocket with some sand and by the time I got home the edges were a little scraped,
other then that, this thing is invincible!
Really strong IMO. This thing can endure a drop on tile 6ft in the air and not dent, crack, or scratch.
Should've seen my face. I was scared to pick up my phone and find cracks.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
Its pretty strong actually. Since the body is made of plastic, it allows the phone to absorb way more shock than glass.
And about using a case; I think the Gnex is beautiful with its blank slate black front with a curve. And the edge of the glass is also slightly curved into the body, making the phone look like a well aged pebble. I took the case off my phone last week and smiled when i saw it sitting on the table.
Things generally look better naked...

Hahaha... yeah.
Mine took a hit on the glass, corner of my aluminum laptop, pretty hard too, should've seen *my* face.
But it made me think, what's the point of a case if it doesn't directly protect what we all want it to protect (the screen!)?
So again, I want to go naked, but I'm hesitant to set it down on anything but cloth.

Well, I personally think galaxy nexus can handle few drops, especially with screen protector on, but I personally had a bad luck with the phone. I dropped it and something broke internally, which made phone not recognize SIM card at all. So my lesson is, if you want your phone more protected, get a case, any case. Just one that'll protect from the fall
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
Dropped it a few times, the most recent one was from knee length, hit rough concrete and came out with 2 battle scars.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
I always prefer a naked one, but I dropped it a couple of times... And the last one on a tile resulted in a chip off the glossier surface..
And then I got a SGP case after that
I've been going naked recently and I finally dropped it once on carpet from a desk. It survived that without any damage. I would say it's pretty durable since I bring it out of my pocket many times so the rubbing from my jeans hasn't done anything negative to my shell.

If it didnt survive a carpet drop, it would probably crack in the pockets of a fat person.
5.8ft drop during a call on a bus Slight crack on screen near volume but doesn't affect display or even touch it, it's all on the bezel. back fell off but battery stayed in so i snapped the back on and continued the call.
