My screen is scratched after 3 days of using it in the house and I have OCD with my phone! the worst thing i did was put it in my pocket and take it out.
I have had a galaxy S2 for over 6 month and not had a scratch :/ this one is quite deep

Order the screen protector now mate whilst waiting for the phone
Firstly, In my own experience the phone is not a fingerprint magnet at all. It's very good for keeping fingerprints to a minimum. (coming from HTC Desire which loved fingerprints)
As for the scratch. Holy ouch! That looks like a very severe and stark scratch. I'm not sure that would happen just in general use 'around the house'. Did you leave it on a diamond or a piece of carbon or sand grit in your pocket? Do you have any idea what caused that damage to the glass? IT was obviously a very hard and very sharp material.

The screen has a beautiful shine to it and look really nice but it really does attract fingerprints :/

Maybe I was exaggerating the fingerprint then but it does seem to attract them :/
And honestly, I have jeans on and they aren't tight, I have put it in my pocket to walk from one room to the next. It hasn't touched anything sharp or grazed off anything all I know is I am gutted
Also before I got rid of my S2, I hammered it with a pen and a key to try and scratch it and I didn't :/
I'm sorry for the scratch man. I hear you. I would be the very same. All I can think is that there was a tiny bit of grit in your jeans pocket. bits of grit like a grain of salt are more dangerous to a phone screen than a Stanley blade because they are sharp right down to a few molecules in width.
I kept my phone in a microfibre bag when I got it, until I could replace it with something like a pouch. It wasn't ideal but it was some sort of barrier between my phone and anything that might be in my jeans or trouser pockets.
I bought a microfiber lined Alcantara pouch since then and keep it upright in my pocket so it should keep any grit in my pockets away from the screen.
What will you do now? Is it insured? Maybe you could "lose" it in a month and replace it with new one and buy a pouch. It's nice of you to provide a warning to others. I think salt/sand/grit are the biggest danger guys. Beware whats in your pocket.

I have a logo on my jeans pocket I wondering if it was that? It is a 3 contract and can be returned within 14 days .. I still have the protectors it came with how rigorously will they check it if I can "no longer afford the contract"? I haven't used the Sim or accessories btw, I have been using my S2 things with it
Ps, where did you get your pouch please?
does you logo use rivets? Also a riveted logo around waist could've been.the culprit. Check to see if coming lose as they can be very sharp. Still don't see the fingerprint thing. Even before I put screen protector. Do you have an extra micofiber pouch for sunglasses? They are cheap if you don't. Something is better than nothing.

OUCH! I dropped mine from shirt pocket to road and the back came off but not one single scratch...... I can't see anything non-metal making that scratch!
I'm picky as hell when iit comes to having scratches on my screen. Besides a screen protector, I never clean the screen with.Windex, paper towels or even rags. Goto WalMart and pick up a tub of Armor All Glass Wipes. I keep one in my house and car and have never had a scratched screen by using them. I also believe since they don't leave as much lint as paper towels, you may not get the dust under the screen issue you see in other posts.

Could be that logo (depending upon material), but there are only a few specially tempered (and carbon-enriched) metal alloys hard enough to scratch glass. Check out the other threads on this topic for more. A ring of almost any gemstone would be sufficient as rubies, emeralds, sapphires, topazes, diamonds, garnet, alexandrites, aquamarines, etc. are ALL harder than silica/quartz (glass).
I also noticed that I had a 1cm scratch at the top of my phone this morning and it was quite deep. I cant remember if anything else was in my pocket with my phone but I dont have any diamond tipped keys and I dont usually walk around with sand in my pockets lol. Anyway it was quite noticeble and im not going to stare at that for the next 2 years, and luckily I had a returns bag already from phones4u so I rang them up and as its within 28days of purchase Im still entitled to an immediate replacement so the phones gone off and I should get a brand spanking new phone next week
In the mean time I shall be ordering a zagg screen protector to put on it as soon as it gets here to keep it scratch free in future
Mark.

Is it just me, or does the GNex screen attract lint like bees to honey? I find myself carrying a cleaning cloth because of the noticeable amount of lint that clings to the touchscreen.
Anyone else come across this? Any remedies? ...maybe it's just my jeans lol

Check the lint filter in your dryer. It's your jeans.
If it actually was attracting dust you'd be shocking yourself on your phone all day. If however your Nexus does generate static electricity then I'd be concerned.
No problems here.

Holy dust batman!! Easy fix for you.. Don't wear pants! Totally acceptable in public btw .
Pretty normal here, my GS2 used to be a pain compared to the nexus.
However (and completely off topic) I'm pretty amused by how easy it is to scratch the (awesome) screen. Never thought a phone of this importance would ship with such a crappy screen on it. I knew it was not gorilla glass when I bought it, but damn, feels like ANYTHING can damage this thing.
I now have a 1 Euro coin stamped on the upper right hand corner. Just great.
Mine always has fingerprint smudges, dust etc on the screen. It got to a point that I don't even worry about it anymore. I just clean it every couple of days or so. It doesn't last of course.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Mine does gather a little dust under the edges of the case but nothing a quick wipe doesn't take care of.
I beg to differ about the screen durability though, it hardly smudges in comparison to my old U8800 or my Asus TFP and I'm yet to find even light scratching despite some brushes against metal buttons etc. *touch wood*.
Very happy GN user here
Mine doesnt gather dust, although perhaps its because I have a screen protector on it so maybe that helps it out.
Just need to wash them dirty jeans
I like Samsung phones because the screen is sealed so dirt from outside can't get underneath the screen. Though I guess that might make it harder to change digitizer though I haven't have broke any screens yet.
I use screen protector and TPU case, I don't really worry about dirt. Usually an easy wipe from the palm is enough if there are dirt.
You could try the XGear EXOSkin. The slippy surface of the skin maybe prevent dirts sticking.
without a case...my nexus is not a bad dust magnet at all
on the second day I had my nexus, a huge huge huge spider landed on my shoulder outside, my phone flew about 8 feet up in the air...totaling a drop of about 14 feet onto solid concrete. Luckilly it was in my trusty ballistics case I got in the mail the same day as my phone, it came out totally unscathed. After that (and the whole US-ban issue) im afraid to even take it out of the case at all...
Upon further inspection of the ballistics case, I actually found a very small device embedded in the rubber that does not attract dust...but actually creates it from the surrounding non-phone matter (mainly just air molecules as my pants seem fine). Im gonna call the local news stations tomorrow, this will probably be bigger news than the higgons boson.
I think your paranoid most screens gather dust.
My TPU case loves dust and things.

I actually commented on this exact topic to my mom recently. My inc2 never seemed to have more than the standard finger smudges on its screen. I clean my gnex all nice with a soft cloth, set it down, and five minutes later it looks like I haven't cleaned it in a week with all the dust on it. I don't know why, but it definitely makes dust more noticeable, if it doesn't attract it.

Here's my story: I was sitting on my couch watching tv and mess in with my phone at the same time. I'm holding the phone in my left hand and decide to reach for the remote and change the channel. Unexpectedly somehow as I was reaching the phone slips from my hand and lands hard on my tile floor.
This was from couch height. The phone landed on a corner and then proceeded to fall flat on the screen.
I have no case (put off getting one..) and no screen protector. Just great.. I knew my phone was doomed.
I'm terrified I've heard about how fragile the s3 is and that gorrila glass 2 is all just crap and doesn't protect. I'm sure that my screen cracked at least a little. I pick up the phone... Nothing!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the phone. The screen is not cracked there is no scratches or scuff marks everything is perfect. Mint condition
I'm very happy and can say that the phone is not that fragie. I think it can withstand some minor accidental drops.
Needless to say I have a case on the way, can't let this happen again!
Just thought I'd share.

I hate cases and haven't used one in many, many phones. I have had minor scratches and scuffs because of that but haven't broken a single one (*knocks on wood*). I am pretty cautious about my phones though. I just love the feel of a new smartphone and a case absolutely ruins it, even more so for the screen protectors. Every time I try out someone's phone with a screen protector it drives me crazy, feels awful and builds up grime/finger grease/dirt even worse than the glass.
I couldn't stand the thought of putting a case on such a sleek thin phone. I met a guy who came into my job who had an SPIGEN Ultra Thin Air case. It adds virtually no bulk to the device and looks nice. I doubt it provides tons of protection but definitely will help for drops on the corners.
I haven't put a case on any of my Android phones, but I just put a case on my SGS3 for 2 reasons. It keeps the camera from contacting (dirty) surfaces if I lay it on its back, and it keeps the buttons from getting accidentally pressed during handling and/or passing around to show off a picture or other screen.
When I got it, I mainly thought I would try it for the camera protection (I'm not so much worried about damage to the lens cover as I am about having to constantly wipe it off to keep the view clean). I only discovered the button protection benefit after putting it on and handling it for a few minutes.
To me, the button protection is the key advantage as every Android phone that I've ever had has been a bear to try to share/show off pictures on. Perhaps my G1 wasn't so bad, but my Nexus One, my G2, and my Sensation all had the issue that if I brought up a picture and handed it to someone they would inevitably hand it back in a few seconds because they had locked the screen - or I'd get it back on silent mode because they'd rested their thumb on the volume keys. This past weekend at a party it got so bad that when I handed it to someone they would treat it like I was handing them a radioactive snowflake - they'd be so afraid to touch it or hold it that they would then end up brushing the screen and hitting the soft keys and mess up what was displayed for fear of hitting a real button. Now, I think those issues will be a thing of the past, or at least much less of a problem.
My case is a Cygnett matte slim case from Frys. It gives a little more holding friction which is a good thing, and while that makes it slightly less easy to slide into a tight pocket, it isn't really "grabby" enough to make pockets a problem. It's more of a soft textured plastic friction than a rubberized friction.
That's awesome!!! Just at least get a gloss clear TPU case from Amazon... it's 100% clear and it protects your phone, as if you have no case on it! Don't forget a screen protector lol...

You got lucky. Did the floor have carpet or a tile floor? I had the samething happend to me many years with my HTC T-Mobile Dash, it was charging, I picked it up and dropped on the carpet (maybe 3 feet) and shatterd the screen. Lucky for me I found a screen on ebay and replaced it for about $50. I can't imangine how much a new screen would cost for the S3.
It was a tile floor not carpet. And yeah I did get lucky...I can't afford to break this phone. Spent all my money on it. Still waiting on that white commuter case to ship though it's taking freaking forever!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
At least there was not any sustainable damage to it. With my luck, it would have shattered. Still, great news to hear that it has some resistance to it.
Dropped my SGS3 twice, face down both times. First time on a tile floor and the second time on concrete. This was prior to having any screen protector or case. I have two light scratches as a result, which are only visible at the right angle.
Can't really complain, was expecting the screen to break with the reports we've been hearing.
I would definitely cry if I dropped this phone. The S3 is too amazing to fall! I put a case on mine for that reason but I take it out every so often just so I can enjoy the nice slippery but sexy feeling of it naked lol.
I got the ghost armor kit for this phone in carbon fiber white on my white version. Not using the screen protectors at the moment.

For those of you that use your GalNex naked (haha no I mean you have clothes on and the phone is naked), you obviously set it down on surfaces of all sorts, wood, granite, plastic, erc.
So does the act of setting your phone down on various surfaces damage it at all, screen up or screen down? Is any of that Verizon/4G LTE/Samsung lettering on the back scratched or rubbed off at all? It doesn't look like any part of the camera would make contact with said surfaces.....?
Kind of a silly question, but I've been paranoid since the Droid Incredible camera-sticks-out thing.

My phone falls down all the time (yep, often on concrete) and doesn't have a single scratch. I'VE THE MAGIC UNBREAKABLE NEXUS! xD
The one thing that seems to have an effect on my GNex is sand...
I've put it in a pocket with some sand and by the time I got home the edges were a little scraped,
other then that, this thing is invincible!
Really strong IMO. This thing can endure a drop on tile 6ft in the air and not dent, crack, or scratch.
Should've seen my face. I was scared to pick up my phone and find cracks.
--------------------------------------------------
If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
Its pretty strong actually. Since the body is made of plastic, it allows the phone to absorb way more shock than glass.
And about using a case; I think the Gnex is beautiful with its blank slate black front with a curve. And the edge of the glass is also slightly curved into the body, making the phone look like a well aged pebble. I took the case off my phone last week and smiled when i saw it sitting on the table.
Things generally look better naked...

Hahaha... yeah.
Mine took a hit on the glass, corner of my aluminum laptop, pretty hard too, should've seen *my* face.
But it made me think, what's the point of a case if it doesn't directly protect what we all want it to protect (the screen!)?
So again, I want to go naked, but I'm hesitant to set it down on anything but cloth.

Well, I personally think galaxy nexus can handle few drops, especially with screen protector on, but I personally had a bad luck with the phone. I dropped it and something broke internally, which made phone not recognize SIM card at all. So my lesson is, if you want your phone more protected, get a case, any case. Just one that'll protect from the fall
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
Dropped it a few times, the most recent one was from knee length, hit rough concrete and came out with 2 battle scars.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
I always prefer a naked one, but I dropped it a couple of times... And the last one on a tile resulted in a chip off the glossier surface..
And then I got a SGP case after that
I've been going naked recently and I finally dropped it once on carpet from a desk. It survived that without any damage. I would say it's pretty durable since I bring it out of my pocket many times so the rubbing from my jeans hasn't done anything negative to my shell.

If it didnt survive a carpet drop, it would probably crack in the pockets of a fat person.

Any one else starting to notice that there screen is pretty easily scratched? I previously had iphones and was actually less careful with them and noticed they stood up alot better to scratches than my note. It all started with a small but somewhat noticeable scratch, bit not it seems to be picking up small scuffs here and there. How is everyone else doing. I am usually against screen protector s bit it seems like that may be the only route. Wondering if its too late.

I always advocate putting screen protectors in all my devices. Getting a scratch on the note 2 will bug me till no end. If you don't want more scratches then get a screen protector, I got the 3 for ten bucks and should last me a couple of months.
I noticed the same thing after a relatively short time as well. I quickly bought the only screen protector that was available to me here in Sweden. Copter! That was a big mistake and I quickly replaced it with a cheap hard plastic variant that cost next to nothing.I am very pleased with it. It almost feels the same as naked. The copter screen projector felt like there was Vonney on the screen. It was also taking marked by the S- Pen.
That sucks ....my screen is un scratched and I go bare back (no case) lol..

If general use caused the phone to scratch, then we'd all have some scratches after extensive unprotected general use. Prior to Gorrilla Glass, that was indeed how phones were. But not these days.
The reason I'm asking is that if we could figure out what, specifically, caused the scratches, that might help all of us avoid scratches in the future.
One question: when you carry the phone in your pocket, are you careful to keep the screen facing inward (toward your leg) rather than outward?

Yes, I carry it in my back pocket facing inward. I never carry anything in my back pocket so they stay free of debris. The gorilla glass is soft enough to scratch easily. The iPhone is hard glsss it is going to almost break before it scratches.

FWIW, I didn't use a screen protector (largely because I cant get one on w/o dust) for most of the time with my Note I, and it never got any scratches on the screen. I always made sure I kept it in its own dedicated pocket in pants/purse which was clear from debris. I currently don't have a screen protector on my Note II, just a flip case w/ tpu mod.
Jeans have rivets. Perhaps you are catching your screen on them when you push & I pull your note in & out of your pocket? Just a thought.

Thanks, that's useful to know; it might possibly explain our different experiences. I've never been willing to put my phone in my back pocket--I'm afraid the pressure when I sit down could crack or scratch the screen. Also, my back pockets aren't deep enough to hold the Note 2 without part of it protruding.
Lesson to be learned...it doesn't matter how careful you are, scratches can and usually do happen. All it takes is literally a spec of sand and you will be a very unhappy customer.

I can tell you right now that the gn2 is durable enough to sit on... I've sat on mine for hours before.

Invisishield seems to be okay, but the pen will leave marks if pressed too hard.

JLG or Spigen Crystal are the two most popular.

Don't know if anyone else is notice this but I have been super careful with my brand new galaxy s4 and somehow there is a pretty nice scratch on my display and a part of the bottom of my bezel is chipped I don't know how this happened I've been checking my pockets for any dirt or sand and I've been very very careful has anyone else noticed this? Like the bezel just chipped out if nowhere. It's really weird. Just wondering if this is happening to anyone else. I still love this phone beyond belief!

Im going to take a picture of mine. It's really a load of bull because I've been taking care of this thing so well I wanted it to stay perfect until my case got here. Apperently that is not gonna happen for a lot of us.

This is why I always have the case and screen protector ready to put on before I take the phone out of the box.

Damn my only having enough money for the phone. 600 bucks was a good chunk of change I didn't have enough for a case. I do have a screen protector.

+1 I made sure I had my Zagg screen protector and OtterBox properly installed before I even turned it on! Not one single scratch, chip, notch, etc.

I'm on my second S4. The first one the bezel cracked above the earpiece. Actually it was the chrome plate that cracked. Within less than 48 hours of having my replacement, the chrome is wearing off on the top left corner. I'm f*cking pissed. Not pissed enough to make my phone look like a turd with some bulky case though. And definitely not pissed enough to buy a htc lol. I contacted Samsung and t-mobile and they are both giving me the runaround. I baby my devices. Here's another thread with somebody with a similar issue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41472121&postcount=1
Same, just got a chip on the bezel today. I had similar issues with the GS3, but there's not a whole lot you can do if you don't like to use cases like me, since the frame is just metallic-looking plastic.
Stupid Damn fake chrome. I only paid 600 bucks for this phone. Why can't I have real shinnyness.

True that. I always laugh when I watch the video of people scratching their Gorilla Glass with a key. What a joke. :laugh:Try a piece of sand............
Ive gone naked except for battery door swap for awhile. I dropped my phone twice and bezel nor screen have scratches so to me it seems to be more sturdy.
(First time phone fell into ice machine at work, second it fell from my counter -carpeted)
I dont even have screen protector because I was sent a matte not clear from seller so waiting for clear to come.

no screen protector and no case.
had the phone for 2 weeks.
just carry in pocket.. sometimes with keys or a pocket knife.. no damage yet.. but i will take causion to not have anything else in the pocket with phone i guess
i had mine for about 2 weeks just carrying my pocket before my ottor box and screen protector came in.
still looks brand newI would carry 2 sets of keys sometimes pocket knife or tools. I would also crawling on the ground under cars. I guess its just hit or miss with quality.
I got a body glove case for mine now. Ive found the phone feels much more sturdy with the extra weight of a case, and having a rubberized case really improves grip on the slippery plastic of the phone.

I ended up with a very small scratch on my screen also, about as long as a dime is wide. but I have no idea how it got there, I always keep my phone in my left pocket and keys in the right with my pocket knife on my right pocket using the pocket clip. this Gorilla glass is good for avoiding deep scratches I think but I thought gorilla glass 3 would prevent minor scratches like what I have. apparently not..

I also noticed that the volume rocks and power buttons scratch very easily. Its best to put a case and screen protector on the phone as soon as you can to avoid scratches.

I never understood that. It's like having a supermodel girlfriend and then covering her up with a burka, it defeats the purpose. In 2 years when you upgrade to a new phone this old one will be in perfect condition but you don't really get to "enjoy" it.
I always go naked, who cares if it looks used when its time to upgrade, it just goes in my junk drawer anyway.

You're assuming that the phone looks better "naked" than with a case. You may think that, but others disagree, making the supermodel analogy flawed. 99+% of the enjoyment comes from the screen, not "touching the case", and a screen protector doesn't prevent that enjoyment (like having the supermodel wear a perfectly transparent bikini). A better analogy would be demanding that your supermodel girlfriend go barefoot all the time, even when walking on gravel, hot asphalt, and broken glass, or having her go naked in subzero weather. Hardly a good way to treat her.
