[GUIDE] Battery Calibration (Testers needed) UPDATED 7/9/12 - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

For those of you who had the Sony X10, you knew that there was a battery calibration method. I won't go into detail about how it worked, but this is very similar so X10 users should be familiar.
Here's how it works:
Step 1: Charge battery to 100%
Step 2: While phone is still plugged into charger, hard reset phone (volume up + power)
Step 3: When phone turns off, unplug charger
Step 4: Turn on phone (Note: If calibration is needed, battery percentage will be less than 100%!)
Step 5: Plug in charger and charge to 100%
Step 6: Repeat until battery percentage is 100 upon restart.
WARNING: THIS IS UNTESTED. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT OCCURS TO YOUR DEVICE.
Your battery percentage should increase incrementally with each restart. Example: if on first restart, your battery reads 94%, then it should read 95 or 96% on the next restart.
Please test and report back. After doing this twice my battery life seems much better (currently down to 57% on 8.5hrs of moderate use). Today is the first day, so I'm not sure if it's just an anomaly. Any feedback is appreciated!

I did this with my phone twice. The first time, the phone restarted at 94%, the second at 95%. I have not repeated since, so I do not know if the percentage keeps going up to 100.

I'll give it a try and report back.

It'll work. Once calibrated should be good unless/until any major system failures after which calibration typically becomes corrupted. Repeat when necessary. eb

First reset came back up at 98%. Charged it back up and after second reset was at 100.
Sent from my LT28at using Tapatalk 2

So with this method do you need to drain the battery?
Sent from my LT28at using xda app-developers app

No. Essentially you are just reseting what capacity the phone believes is 100%.

OK, I had afeeling that's what it would do. I'm going to run through the process until I get to 100% after restart. Let me know if the life is any better.
Thanks.
Sent from my LT28at using xda app-developers app

i can also confirm that after trying this i got 97% then 99% now at 100% after hard reset... will now run down and recharge to 100% and report findings for battery thanks for this!

I've tested said procedure. Getting 100% charge reading now consistently.
I would like to know if using a different cable would be ok to use since the one packaged is very short.
Sent from my LT28at using Tapatalk 2

I use the cable that came with my captivate because its 6ft, not 3 like the Sony one. I do, however use the Sony wall adapter.
Once you reach 100% upon restart, the battery should be calibrated. Again, what you are doing is making sure the phone recognizes the correct capacity as 100%. I plan to check it once a month after I complete the process. My before/after comparison will be complete tomorrow night.
Sent from my LT28at using xda app-developers app

Just wanted to give an update. My before/after was compromised, so I never was able to prove the effectiveness. I've since flashed ICS. I tried the method after flash and had 100%. I'm not sure if this means it doesn't work in ICS, or if I never lost my original calibration. I didn't wipe anything during the flash, so it's quite possible I never lost original calibration. If anyone can do a before/after for me, that would be great.
Sent from my LT28h using xda app-developers app

I've tried it now, hard reset and charge to 100 about 4 times. Everytime I restart I quickly go into settings and go to battery use and it's already at 99%
Should I keep doing it?
ICS, LT28i. I just reset it and it's running stock like fresh out of box

Hey guys, i tried this method and did it several times since whenever I restarted it, it was unstable... first it was 99, then 98, then 100 then 96 then 98... so I did this several times... and then on one of the go when holding volume up + power, my phone turned off like usual and am unable to turn it back on computer cannot detect, I've charged it for one and a half days, still nothing and I even left it for two days and put it on charge, it does the same thing, nothing... except there is a VERY faint red/orange led when charging but only lasts 20 minutes then it vanishes when kept on charge. do you guys have any idea what's happening? its been a week and I am currently without a phone please help! thanks

Take off your sd card and your SIM card it should reset.

Battery Doesn't to Charge 100%?!

I just got a Nexus and rooted, etc, using the toolkit.
I've noticed that the battery will not charge all the way to 100%, no matter how long i let it charge.
Yesterday for example, i used the phone till it died, then connected the phone to the charger over night.
This morning i turn the phone off and see that the battery is only at 92%!?
How can i fix this?!
Currently running Vicious Jell Bean v4.
Perhaps this is why there is an option to clear battery stats in clockwork, yes?

That doesn't actually do anything aside from erasing your battery graph.
Yeah from what I've read, clearing the battery stats using CWM or some other calibration app, didn't take care of the whole problem.
Any other ideas?

Does the kernel you are using have BLX?
That can be used to put a limit on how high a battery charges, maybe you changed the value by accident or it was set that way by the dev.

I just noticed that you can change the mAh capacity in the "Battery Monitor Widget" by 3C.. it currently shows that capacity is 1750mAh when the stock battery states 1850mAh. Should i change the value now and drain the Battery completely, then full recharge?

what the crap...
I super-wiped, deleted dalvik cache, and factory reset, and flashed the Rev' HD rom, and STILL doesnt charge past 92%?!?!
Perhaps its the "Battery Monitor Widget" from 3C and the data stored?!??
Same happened to me. And it's getting worse progressively - first it was charging to 89%, then it didn't go above 79, now I can rarely see it go over 60
Since day one my phone never got to 100%, it always stops at 99%...
My phone was able to charge to 100% within reasonable time. I've changed a few firmwares with full wipe, that didn't impact neither the ability to charge to 100% when it was able to do so nor the inability to charge fully when the problem surfaced.
I suspect that problems started after I dropped my phone (wasn't a hard drop, just a fall to a hard surface from 0.5 m, no visible damage).
Is it possible that the battery gets damaged somehow?
Same problem

Same problem here, my phone charge until 84% BUT:
I tried with a battery of my friend that was at 95% and my phone showed it 60%!
The issue is in the way that our phone measure the battery, but i already tried wipping bat stats and nothing...
I also wiped all the things and re-installed 4.2.2 and same problem
Why would you even bother eating your time wiping battery stats? It had absolutely nothing to do with charge indication.

When you flashed this last rom did you wipe data/factory reset?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I have a Q: My rom (SlimRom2.9.0) has an option for Quick Charge mode, where it will charge faster but you loose USB connectivity functionality (for connecting to a computer).
Will the SGS3 also take advantage of a higher output (2.1a) USB charger, ala iPad chargers? Does the circuitry inside detect and is smart enough to adapt?
Look at the battery stats and see if something is hogging it. Get something like battery drain analyzer to see the percentage you're charging at.
You guys think it has anything to do with the stock lj4 kernel? My battery life kicks ass 4 hours screen on with 17 + hours of battery life.. still charging is slower than usual. Hmmmm

I use the charger from my 10.1 tab. I believe it runs at 5 amps. Definitely charges faster although I've never timed it by how much. If I charge it on the wall charger that came with my chinese batteries, it takes over 9 hours sometimes. Yet the chinese batteries only ever charge up to 91% on it's own charger, I have to charge the rest once I put it in the phone. Weird.

How long does it take for a full charge? [Culprit: Bad USB cable]

Well I need to know from you guys, it's not that I don't know, but need to reconfirm. I think mine is taking much lower now than it was. A full charge, say from 5% to 100%, with Stock charger?

Charging from 0 to 90% happens in no more that 2 hours I would say. from 90% to 100% the charging rate gets slowed a lot. So basically shouldn't take more than 2:30 hours from 0 to 100%.

you are welcome. the general rule is to try to 1) avoid charging to 100%, really diminishing return the higher it goes; and 2) avoid deep discharge cycle. I usually use 40% of the capacity at work everyday, so charge to ~70% in the morning, use down to ~30% and then charge again. charging time in this range is rather linear, about 1 percent a minute

Yeah, it happened to mine too few days back. My Note2 went crazy, taking around 7-8 hrs to fully charge from 15%. So, i tried searching about the problem on google but to no avail. Did a factory reset with cache wipe and problem solved :good:. Now it takes about 2.5 hrs to fully charge from say 10% (using the samsung wall charger with phone switched on). I can only say that the slow charging was caused due to some software but don't know exactly which one? You may as well try the hard reset if anything else doesn't work out .
P.S : Btw i'm on stock fw with no root or mod! Only did some OTA updates couple of weeks ago.
Guys, we have a changeable battery and is already writed Inside to android that it won't charge to 100%, it just shows at 100% but really it is at 95%-98% that feature came with 2.2.1 update 2yrs ago.
And we can change the battery after 2yrs for 20-30$, unlike Nokia lumia users or HTC one x or iPhone users.

Yeah, thanks. But if you've Watchdog installed then you can see which app is going over threshold and keep running on background. And yes, this time, again, the culprit was PowerAMP! Uninstalled it and voila. The same app created problem for me when I had my S2, charging was pathetically slow, even I had to go to SC and they said battery is gone. But I didn't believe and asked a techy friend and he said it might be some app, and damn right he was.
Anyway, if anyone having the same issue like mine, that is, charging duration has increased with Stock charger, then install Watchdog (the lite version will do) and see who is the culprit.
I have no idea how a top app like PowerAMP could cause this! Jeez!

Battery drops to zero during calls

I'm running CM9 and have had this problem with 2 different Samsung Epics...I'll be on a phone call with, say 38% battery and all of a sudden I'll hear a system beep and look at the phone and see it's dropped to 0%, shutting down the phone. Do you think it is as simple as that? I am pretty bad about popping the battery out when I change batteries without shutting down. I charge them in an external charger (and charge the one in the phone overnight in the phone). I'll give it a shot and start shutting down properly before putting a fresh battery in. Thanks for the tip.

Are you still having the same issue?
Because I think I'm maybe having the same problem.
My tablet keep shutting off at 40% as if is 0%. It all started since this past weekend.
My tablet is unrooted ,try to search the web for a solution but haven't found one yet.
I'm trying avoiding to do a factory rest because I read the issue still persist.
Everytime I recharge my tablet it stay a long time on 100% and the moment it reach 40% it shut down a,msg appear saying battery low and shut off.
Also take note I've read about those app calibrator but keep reading that a myth.
Let me know if your still having the same problem?
No, I actually fixed the issue. Believe it or not I used a calibrating app and Root Cleaner and did a full clean and it appears to be working as normal now. I'll add later which battery app I used, can't remember the name.
EDIT : Actually it was just Root Cleaner. It has a batter calibration setting.
