Hi guys I'm currently a galaxy s2 user and I'm more than satisfied with this phone great size for my hands and speedy enough but they are offering me 2 HTC one s phones one has a blacklisted imei and the other one only has a broken screen... my question is simple if I switch the good imei motherboard onto the one with blacklist imei will that be good?

I would think that would work or even just switching screen but this is s2 forum i think htc forum might be more helpful
This should work in theory, as IMEI is burned into the Mobo memory in mostly inaccessible memory locations.
Blacklisted IMEI isn't necessarily universal, so a Tom blackout may not affect service on ATT. Or Straight talk, as they proxy your data reqiests and don't necessarily identify your device to T-Mobile via IMEI but rather IMSI.
So you may be able to get a working screen and call it all good.
Bear in mind some carriers have started IMEI blacklist sharing agreements, so test first to evaluate if this is the case and also be aware this practice may expand in time and affect your device, so it's best to assume you may wind up SOL at some future point when purchasing.

hi there, i have an sgh-m919 which is 4months old. it worked fine for the first 3 then one night without warning, the cell-signal indicator turned into a circle with a line through it, indicating no carrier.
did some looking, seems that the imei is now reading as unknown (i did not try to root or do anything to it for this to occur). this is not a stolen device and the people i bought it from can't help.
after perusing your excellent help/forums, i tried rooting, reflashing stock tmobile, triangle-away, u name it, same result- imei unknown, circle with line through it.
i am wondering if i have a hardware fault which is causing this because of the many things i have tried, none seem to change this one issue. Note that when i press the codes to go into service mode, the screen shows a blank service mode, as opposed to a menu which is what is supposed to be there. So i am really puzzled if this is a hardware fault which is disallowing the drivers or whatever to initialise?
my question is- is there some diagnostic i can run which will interrogate the hardware and report if there is a failure? i would like to keep the phone stock samsung tmobile as opposed to rooting etc.
any assistance would be appreciated

Did you buy it from a store? If so take it back to the store and demand they give you a new one.
Did you buy it from a person selling it second hand? If so they screwed you over. They sold you the phone then reported it stolen later and got themselves a brand new on on a warrenty claim. As soon as they report their current one stolen T Mobile blacklists the IMEI. Call the cops on them. Call the warrenty company too any let them know that a fraudlent claim was filed.

yes i bought it from a store and when i took it to them for service, it just sat there for 2 weeks before i pulled it back. they did not work on it and when i diagnosed the imei problem, they replied that this has never happened to them before so i doubt they are capable of repairing this anyway.
based on your suggestion that the imei is blacklisted- if this is true, how come the issue doesn't go away temporarily when i flash to oem without a sim installed? the phone does not go onto the network at all- it shows that circle upon boot. i am thinking that if the imei was indeed blocked, it would allow the phone to go online to the carrier and then report it as unknown.
the issue seems to be that either the nv has been corrupted (which i am guessing would be rewritten over with a fresh one when flashed) or there is some hardware fault (such as the cell radio) which is causing this.
the phone works great on wifi, all apps work fine, everything seems normal except for the cellular/mobile ability.
that's why i am asking if there is a hardware diagnostic i can run to verify or deny this is the problem.

If you bought it from a store brand new then the imei is not likely the issue. At least not because its been blacklisted.
Again though, you bought it from a store. Its 4 months old and it broke. Take it back and tell them to give you a new one. What country are you in? Some countries have much stronger consumer protection rules.

Have you pulled out the battery and looked on the back and checked the IMEI there to see if its blacklisted? If it isn't then you can push it back into the phone, I had the problem on my old s3 and I would think that the solution would be the same to fix it.

I have the imei from the sticker under the battery but don't know the site to check for blacklisted imei's; guess I'll google it
I also don't know how to push it back onto the phone: all the free apps I tried don't work. The service menu is also blank.

Yeah it sounds like something deleted out the information in the rom that holds that data.
I beleive in the etc folder.
I forget without looking.
There are many tools on the forum to backup IMEI data to prevent this from happening and restore it from backup if it does.
In this case, were presumably there is no backup, the phone will need to be serviced by samsung.
Agreed. Based on the number of ideas I tried from xda, the issue was never repaired so I hooe samsung can help

i have emailed t-mobile to verify as well.
but here's a question- if my device got blacklisted on the night when the imei went null in the phone- was it deactivated by t-mobile (note, i am not a t-mobile customer, i am not in the USA) and if it was, how come flashing to samsung oem doesn't repair the issue?
i do not have a sim in the phone so it's not even going to try to connect to a carrier. i am confused if it could have been remotely disabled via t-mobile and how can i get this back up and running again?

The store you bought it from sounds shady if they won't honor the manufacturers warranty. They also seem to have sold you a stolen phone. Call the cops.
You will never get the phone unblacklisted.

Partially right. He could call and find out if the phone is stolen or if it has a balance in it. If latter, you can pay the balance off and have the blacklist removed. But yes, report the store to the police. Shady business.

Once blacklisted it's a done deal. Even if you offer to pay any balance owed tmobile will say no.
Only recourse is try and get a refund from the store.

Can anyone say how t-mobile did this? I do not have a t-mobile sim, I was using the phone on wifi as normal when the imei went null
How did t-mobile find the device to null the imei (I am not in the usa) and what exactly was done? What files or database on my device was deleted/erased?

Nothing was changed on your phone.
T Mobile blacklists the phone's serial number (IMEI) which is sent to the cell tower everytime the phone moves to a new tower or re-authenticates itself on a tower. If your IMEI is blacklisted then the network says it won't allow the device to authenticate.
Even though you don't use T Mobile you may still be using a T Mobile network. The 4 main US carriers sublet their networks to smaller carriers, and while I'm not super familiar with the cell carriers used in Trinnidad, I'd bet you anything that the US carriers opperate the networks there even if it's under different names or through subletting of the their networks.
There is also some ambiguity as to if cell phone carriers share those blacklists with each other. If they do, then getting blacklisted on one GSM network is the same as getting blacklisted on all GSM networks. I'm not sure if that's going on though.

Then something else happened that damaged the IMEI on your device.
But you specifically said you checked your IMEI against the blacklist and said yours was blacklisted. All advice that was given to you after that was based on that information.
If the IMEI is damaged on your device, then you need to find help elsewhere. We do not discuss how to repair/restore/replace IMEI's on XDA unless you have a previous backup of the EFS partition made in recovery for YOUR device. If so, just restore that backup. If not, you cannot use XDA to find out how to fix a bad IMEI. There are too many ways that information is used for evil and theivery and XDA will not be a party to the discemination of that information.

If you look at my original question, you will see where I was querying a null imei. And as the thread continued, someone suggested I check the imei blacklist. I thought that t-mobile had done something remotely to my device to disable it, that's how I got to this point. My original issue still remains-null imei.
I understand that changing imei is illegal so I have not requested that. I was enquiring what could have happened to my device, given that I did not root or tamper with it in any way to cause a null imei.
If it is that the efs or nv or whatever file on the device got corrupted, I can accept that. Odd thing is that if it's a protected system file then how could it become corrupted in the first place.
Nevertheless, I do not wish to be blacklisted here on xda so I am not asking for advice on how to change imei.
If I knew I needed to backup whatever files before, I would have. But this is not my first Android (I owned a nexus one since it came out and it still works to this day) and I never had this issue of corrupted files. Granted, it is an older version of android.

Have you been able to successfully change your IMEI thus far? The apps I've tried so far either need ROOT or don't support Samsung devices...
Found a method involving QPST (modifying the hex IMEI stored in "nv_data") but haven't tried it yet.

That tool is from 2009 from what I see.
You guys are out of luck...they are going to permanently hotline all outgoing calls to customer care...there is no possible way around that. I am sitting in the Verizon store right now

I just spoke with a Verizon rep about the latest test message and was told that they are not blocking IMEI's. He said they are not allowed to do that. He actually seemed a little annoyed and tried to convince me that Samsung is the one that everyone should be upset about, not Verizon. Samsung is the one pushing out these updates to disable our phones and Verizon is innocent to all this craziness. Yeah right! He said that Samsung has something in the works to disable the Note 7's but does not know what it is. If it's in the form of another update, I say we might be Ok if we have the updates blocked.

Why would they need to block your imei when they can just route every call you make to customer service where you can talk to someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
In the next two weeks they will make it so no one keeps their note 7 for use as a cell phone.

Yeah the guy I spoke to said they are not blocking IMEI #'s so my thinking is they are doing it in their end. So then I figured, well okay,. I will just bite the bullet and get the Pixel XL...not so fast. Backordered until 3/10. Complete mess. Time to switch to tmobile.

Nah...They see the imei behind the sim. All the ims features would register using imei. Note 7's goose is cooked.

Not with the note 7 right? None of these carriers are going to treat this any differently. They all want to be done with a mess they didn't start. Can't blame them. This all falls at Samsungs feet.

Hi everyone,
I've got smashed Galaxy Note 10+ from eBay, fixed it and found out that it has a kind of carrier change temporary lock. IMEI is clean, not blacklisted or anything. Technically the phone is unlocked and it fully works with my non-US carrier SIM card for around 5 min or so. But after that a ridiculous nonsense message about carrier change pops up and the phone becomes blocked. It looks like the phone is connecting by itself with Verizon servers, they detect other carrier SIM card and block GSM functionality. I flashed international U1 firmware already but it didn't help. Verizon tells some 60 day activation cap - the phone will be unlocked automatically after 60 days since Verizon account activation. Is there any way to fix it / block the phone from communicating with Verizon? I have no idea how long should I wait since the phone was wiped before sale.

Sounds like the seller might have received an insurance replacement due to the damage. Maybe the phone is blocked by Verizon because it should have been disposed of and/or should no longer be used in their network. Just a guess.

The phone is not going to be used in the USA. Again, it works for few minutes. It's not blocked straightaway.

That's just the way the network lock works.....you'll need to wait the 60 days...(probably closer to 30 now...but no way to know)
If you can't wait there are paid solutions that you can use... cell unlocking services.
No amount of firmware changing etc will have an effect on the network lock.....sorry.
Also i disagree with the other poster....sounds like you confirmed its not blacklisted....what you're experiencing is the typical network lock behavior.....pay or wait it out.
Btw any before and after pics?
What did you pay for smashed device? How much spent repairing?

I paid US$230 for smashed device, $320 for screen assembly with housing, $15 for back glass cover (haven't receive it yet), $40 for S-pen. Screen assembly is original despite being bought from AliExpress. It looks like brand new now. Just waiting for back cover and unlock.

This is why I like and dislike Samsung Galaxy flagships. Screen is always damn expensive but the possibility to fix completely smashed device is very high. Actually I repaired few Galaxies in much worse condition than that. At the same time, recently I had an iPhone XS Max with relatively light screen damage and was unable to repair it due to face ID failure (logic board fault). Cheers!

It looks like the phone is connecting by itself with Verizon servers, they detect other carrier SIM card and block GSM functionality. I flashed international U1 firmware already but it didn't help. Verizon tells some 60 day activation cap - the phone will be unlocked automatically after 60 days since Verizon account activation. Is there any way to fix it / block the phone from communicating with Verizon? I have no idea how long should I wait since the phone was wiped before sale.

Did you call Verizon? Give them IMEI and they should be able to tell you what's up

I live 13000km away from USA so the call to Verizon could be not cheap. I had an online chat with them via Messenger and they asked me my Verizon account details to answer my question. Obviously I don't have them. From now I'm looking for not crazy expensive unlock service.

Just had one more conversation with Verizon. It seems that they're bloody dickheads! They claim the Verizon does not lock phones which is pure lie. And their temporary carrier lock system is a bloody mess. They're unable to manage it at all!!! Just look at my conversation history with Verizon support:
"We greatly appreciate this (IMEI) information, Victor. After further review, we do show that this IMEI is not currently showing a carrier lock to our network....
I know this is confusing and that you just want to get full use out of that phone. While we don't lock any locks on the phone, it is true that takes 60 days from sale of the phone for a phone to be unlocked. We would suggest that you get in contact with the seller of this phone and instruct them to get in contact with Verizon or alternately, reach out to the selling platform you used and your local carrier. Keep in mind also that Verizon sold phones are not guaranteed to work with other carriers. We would not be able to provide any further support beyond this. I hope this helps clarify and if you have any additional concerns, we are happy to help out. "

No, it's just a standard SM-N975U, not a Verizon branded one. Actually I was able to easily flash it into unlocked N975U1 version. But still that damn Carrier change message pops up and blocks GSM capability.

As I sad earlier, I had a chat with Verizon twice regarding this phone. They checked it by IMEI and told me that it is NOT SIM locked. This is the only useful piece of info I've got from them. Despite of that, they were unable to help me with that Carrier Change issue sending me to original owner / Verizon account holder of this phone. So it's not a carrier variant and not sim locked.

i think ur confused lol... if it was originally sold by verizon then it is a Verizon Variant..
and clearly you are sim locked as thats the exact message ypu get when its sim locked as well as you dont get service with the other carrier..
based on what u posted whoever you talked to has no idea what theyre talking about especially if theyre telling you they dont lock phones which meansthey also didnt even bother to look up their own policy for it and instead just made stuff up off the top of their head..
but hey, dont take my word for it.. it wont work as u need tho until vzw unlocks it or u pay for a service to unlock it.

No, I sold it. As I can see there is no unlocking solution right now. No hope that it will be available any time soon.
Hi all!! Please be gentle, I'm new to all of this awesomeness. So I have a note 10+, it was given to me because they couldn't get it to work. Idk what they did to it, but they really did a number on it!! The model number on the back says sm-n9700, in the about phone stuff it says sm-n9750. I'm pretty positive the imei has been changed as well as the serial number. it's locked to tmobile I assume since that's the carrier that shows when powering on. HELP!!

What shows up on the splash screen doesn't necessarily mean it's locked to the carrier. It would be if the phone was financed/leased... But I have other concerns based on what you said.
Personally I would strongly suggest you just give the phone back.
It's really nice that someone gave you the phone, but this has the "too good to be true" ring to it.. Especially if the model number is not correct, that would be a major red flag. At the same time if you think that the IMEI was changed then I would definitely give the phone back. Absolutely no reason would exist to change the IMEI other then the phone was blacklisted, financed, lost/stolen or a warranty return that wasn't returned.

Only way is to pay company fully to unlock IMI of the phone. Nothing else going to work

Well after digging deeper I have discovered that it's a freaking counterfeit (I guess that's what you'd call it). Oh well...that's my luck. But on the bright side I've managed to learn quite a bit, thanks to me being so determined, that otherwise I never would have educated myself on.

I agree with the others though, give it back. If the person who gave it to you won't take it back, or is not around to take it back, and if you didn't pay any money for it, then recycle it.

I suppose these days with carriers opening their networks to other carrier's phones....
But in the past i did this a few times. Boost mobile for instance didn't have the device i decided i wanted, bought a used Boost branded phone and changed my chosen phone to that boost imei. Put the boost phone away (still have it).
I did this maybe 3 different times to 3 different phones on different carriers....was really the only way to have the device you wanted on the carrier you had......
Again, that was when carriers had too much power and most networks were all cdma....a dark time.
To be clear, i owned the phones/imei's outright.
I used to dream about the day we'd get gsm phones....the cellular world is much better now so no need for imei swaps (on legit devices)

imei changing/swapping is illegal in the US.. are u sure ur not talking about sim swapping lol..
i suppose if u owned the devices outright then y not.. but its still illegal.. devices have an imei for a number of reasons so manipulating that i can also understand why its illegal some places..
think of it like a car.. if u got a cheap pinto and take that license plate with the tags n all and swap it onto a sports car to avoid paying higher insurance or w.e then if u get caught u pay the price lol..
its an identifier.. for networks, global imei blacklists, financing etc. etc. its like an ssn for a phone lol.. ppl dont go changing their ssn when they feel like it lol..
i can see both sides but more so the carrier side since most ppl (not all) that r changing imeis are for nefarious reasons.

Never suggested that it wasn't...and while i had my reasons back then, these days the only reason i would imagine someone doing it would be in the case of a "stolen" device. I don't condone that
