I just want to know wich is the best to do it. I though I had a ext partition aligned with the SD card to use it as internal memory... but know Im getting I have no space left. So I suppose I did something wrong.
Any help is appreciaded.
Thanks in advance !
Do you use any sd-ext scripts? I suggest you Mount2sd.

You might also want to include details like which Rom,etc.
Im using Cool Droid V3 with a 8 GB SD Card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279016
I will reformat my SD Card and try everything again. If i do it right, should the internal memory change in size?
And wich should be the partition sizes?
Thanks in advance !
that depends on the hboot u are using. about ext4 partition, most roms require ext4 1gb - 1.5gb max

Please can you confirm me if after the Rom Manager patition tool I should have 3,18gb of FAT32 or more?
I've done 0mb for the swap and 512bmb for the EXT
Am I missing some space?
Many thanks
Best regards
3.1 + .5 is close to right. Might be a bit low but not by more then 100 MB
Disk drives never have the right capacity because of formatting and companies use 1000 MB = 1 GB when it should be 1024
Thanks
I'm asking this beacause before I redid the partitions (the sd was already partitioned) with rom manager, I crearly remember that the fat32 was something like 3.66.
Is there any way or program to get the lost space back?

you havent lost any space, as the previous poster said, with a 4gig sd card, you dont get 4gig of useable space. because of the way its formatted and the block sizes you would probably get about 3.6 - 3.7gb of space on the card.....
Thanks you too mate for the help

How can I install apps on the EXT partition ?

if your using a rom with apps2sd and have an ext partiton on your card, apps will automatically be installed to /system/sd/app/ (the ext partiton) so you dont need to do anything

I'm currently on Leedroid 2.2d
Is there a free program to keep an eye on this partition free space ?
Leedroid have a2sd so you should be fine and "quick system info" is a great app for that purpose.
Hey Guys , I need some help with SD card partition.
I'm using HTC desire 16 GB SD card , my device is rooted and I have been all over this tutorial :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
which means that I have S-Off Precedure With Alpharev too.
I have partition my Sd Card With Gparted.
I have logged to unix , created a 3 partitions ,first one is the fat32 12 gb , second ext3 2GB, and about 200MB of swap partition....
In addition I have installed new room, the : [ROM] LeeDrOiD 2.4.1 A2SD
The thing is , that after partitions my sd card I have expected to have about 2 GB of available internal memory (setting -> sd & phone storage -> Available space )
I have expected to observe about the size of my ext3 partition size in the available space . - in the internal phone storage.
It's seems to be the the phone is unable to recognize the ext3 partition, and locate in as an internal memory.
What shall I do in order to expand my (virtual) internal memory ?
( I have look over most tutorial in the forum )
(I went through the partitions tutorial , specially this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7V64S6cEkGw&feature=player_embedded
but it's seems to have no effect over the memory )
BTW, I have tried GParted , and rom manager as well , both gave me the same results.
Cheers
Shahar
I'd like to know how to create
That is not how a2sd+ works, your internal memory won't increase. It just goes down slower. Use titanium backup to see if your ext is recognised.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
Tea because ext isn't internal storage. Its on your SD card so its classed as external storage, thus the size wont change. There are a couple, if that, just 1 rom that actually changes it but other than that, it doesnt change.
You also don't need swap. Especially the 200mb of swap will greatly slow down your phone as TheGhost said. Remove it and have about 1GB or ext and you will be fine. When you flash a rom, install a few apps and see of they're installing to ext.

Hey TheGhost1233
And thanks for your help
I was watching a friend of mine from school , the guy using the same phone (HTC Desire) , and he were able to change his internal memory to 1.33 Gb !!! (I was so impressed) ,
Do you know how has he done that ?
I remember the mentioned running a script from xda .... (I was searching the forum all over)
Is there any way to change my internal memory storage to 1.333 GB, as a virtual memory over my SD card storage.
Cheers
Shahar
Maybe your friend uses a rom with data2sd script from sibere (Starburst ROM uses it see here)

Are you sure about the swap partitions ? I'm familiar with the unix platform, and a swap partition is very essential.
do you know which rom changes the internal memory ?
And I have spotted my partition using titanium backup ....
What kind of things I can do with that partition ?
Thanks

It's not built in. But on Starburst website (mentioned above) you get all you need to activate it. It's easy. Just follow the instructions on the site.

hey everyone
i have rooted my phone and installed cyanongen mod7, the fact is that i followed the noobprrof tutorial, and as he stated i partitioned my sd card, i left 1 gb ( its a 4gb memory now its divided to 3 and 1 ), but i didnt know where did it go and why i did partition my sd card, i thought it would add up to internal memory but it didnt...
please can anyone tell me whats the purpose of paritioning it ?? and how can i let apps get installed on this paritioned part if its purpose is so...
i have also realised in the video that as he entered to phone storage, theres a part at the end name personal data that is not appearing in my phone... does this have to do anything with wut im asking ??
thanks in advance
making sd-ext is for ROMs which uses A2SD and it installs apps directly to that sd-ext. it's on sd card don't worry and those partitions are not visible in windows, only in linux.
thank u ferencz1
ok so most of the time when i move apps to sdcard the 3gb partition's free space decreases and not the 1gb partition...
1gb partition is the ext4
3gb is the fat32
isnt it supposed that the 1gb partition that decreases in free space ??
Titanium backup shows you a split - system rom, internal, sd card, sd ext ....
Look at that to see if your ext is working properly - yes is should decrease!
No need to 'move' apps to sd - its auto
Does your rom suport ext 4?? if not start again with ext 3!

CM7 does support ext4 right, don't know i use IC, but what you said about titanium backup is wrong, sometimes it doesn't say how much ext. there's. Quick System Info does although

Hello. I am new to this forum. I am curious how many people really use a swap partition and what is the method of of using swap in htc wildire s?
I am well aware of Linux OS and understand the need of swap but in case of android does it really improves something?
Hi.I will try to explain you what i know:
-swap partition is needed to work some ROM's,combinated with ext partitions.
-you can create swap partition with MiniToolWizard
-in same time, you can create with CWM recovery.
If you need,i will give you a link for MiniTool.
If i helped you,please click "Thank's" button.Have a nice day !!
Does android automatically detect SWAP Partition on SD Card and utilize it automatically?
Yes(i think).

does it? i thought the kernel had to had zram enabeled to allow swap use? i might be wrong though..
Most roms auto-detect, but I'd recommend checking with the devs before partitioning your sd card.
Also, unless you have a class 6 or upwards, it won't really do any good.

Where did u find that info?? Is class 4 mmc that bad????:s
never use a swap partition on any android phones. It does no good. The swap partition are made with your sd card which is more than 10 times slower than your internal memory. When an app is loaded or is sent to swap partition cache memory, it takes time to copy or load the files.
Android already has a system for moving unused apps to cache memory. So, let android do its job.

Just ignore his comment. We need Linux swap. Without it phone gets laggy. I tested it myself.
Download minitool partition wizard home edition. Its free Google it. After installing it and insert ur sdcard via card reader and run the program.it will show ur partitions.
You don't need to uninstall ur system. Just make nandroid backup using recovery. Re format only the ext and swap partition. Based on wat ext u had earlier. All partitions should be primary.
Then from advance recovery restore sd-ext.

@Edu: just search xda for details of swap partition. There have been number of discussions regarding it and all have ended up denying the use of swap partition. These have been comfirmed by much experienced devs, who have been cooking roms for more than 3 years. But still if you dont believe, i would recommend you to google a little and then make the decision.

But sir without it the phone gets very laggy. Means every games run slower. The antutu gpu score gets lowered.
U can easily get 645-630 3D with swap. But without it u can't cross 615. That may seem as little gain but for games it becomes a big issue.

Maybe that is because the extra cache memory are directly transferred to swap memory. Games which require huge cache memory can be of profit. thanks for the screens btw
@op : just take nand back up and back up your sd card. Try the swap partition thing and if it is beneficial, go ahead or else you know what to do

that's kinda not possible i guess..with mini partition tool you can delete swap or ext3 partition and create ext4 visa versa..but if you wanted only fat32 it isn't possible.
either if you have ext3 or ext4..open mini partiiton tool..delete swap and delete ext3 or ext4(which one you have)
and create partition(ext3 or ext4) from remaining free space...in this your fat32 will be unchanged..
but obviously ext3/4 will be deleted..bt its okay to hv swap partition..256 MB hasn't big space..the whole concept of swap derived frm link2sd i guess..latest int2ext scripts dont need swap..but int2extv2+ need.

Copy all of your data to your pc, then format the card via clockworkmod recovery. It should remove the partition. If not you can try gparted for linux or easeus partition master for windows pal.
If your trying to keep your ext partition but without a swap then copy your data to the pc, then select partition sdcard from clockworkmod recovery. Just don't select a swap and you will be fine
Oh, and make a nandroid backup to back up whats on your ext partition

When u move apps with app2sd some of data stil remain on phone internal memory. With sdext partition and link2sd all app data are moved. U can partition through recovery. Depend of sd size sdext should be no biger of 256-512mb. Of course widgets steel won't work so be careful what u link. Also when u partitioning all *our data wil be lost so backup your memory card first.

Oki..
I'm Using 8gb card and i have a free space of around 3gb so how much partition would be better and will this partition help me in increasing the ram or making my device faster ??
Can we Change The amount of partition once we have done it before ??
512mb sdext will be just fine. I've heard of some scripts that do the trick with ram but I've didn't try them. With internal memory free u should get faster, more responsable phone, and for gaming u should try some of the roms made specialy for that (gingerDx is very good and superfast, have one or two bugs but developer will fix it very soon). hope it helps
U can't change size of partition without formating all data (I think u need to use killdisk software). But realy u don't need biger swap partition of 512mb. Ofcourse sd card class 8 or 10 is preferable.

ps: i have sd-card of 2gb
4 now tnks
CAUTION
you should do it only if your sd gives at least 6mbps read speed.Otherwise your phone will lag even in best roms like a granny driving a lamborgini
OOwww Okay thanks for the information and i shouldn't make the partition right??
