Hello, Having issues setting up wi-fi tethering on my phone.
Used several different methods (fox-fi, wifi tether, the widgets that simply turn on wifi-tethering) and everyone gives me the exact same problem.
Turn on wi-fi tethering, it turns on without issue (on fox-fi it says "Started with errors"). Shows up as a network to connect to on my PC, connect to it without problem. But I don't get internet access. I can transfer files between the device, but don't get any data connection.
Anyone have a similar experience? Suggestions?
Using PDAnet I can connect my phone to my computer with the USB cable, turn on USB tethering, and that works fine. Would much rather have wi-fi tethering though.
I have the Verizon CDMA/LTE version, rooted running stock 4.04.

With any of the wi-fi tethering, sometimes dhcp acts up and doesn't get the correct ips. What kind of ip addresses are you getting on the computer you are wi-fi tethering?

None.
I don't get any internet connection whatsoever.
It connects to the network, I ca transfer files locally between the phone and my computer, but that's it.
Are you maybe using wifi direct as opposed to the hotspot option?

No. I've tried Foxfi and android wi-fi tether and both have the same result.
Checked it on a friends computer and same thing so more than likely the problem is on the phone end.
Everything I see online says you just download foxfi, press activate hotspot, connect to it, and that's it.
Is there some blatantly obvious step maybe I'm missing?

What's your phone service like? 3G/4G? How many bars?
Edit: Why do you prefer wifi tethering over USB tethering?

Really?
Then why do all the apps claim "no root required" and not even mention it?
I'm rooted, but running stock 4.04
Ok... sooo... It works!
I just remembered I had made my IP static a while back, changed it back to dynamic and it kicked in!
Not sure why my friends computer didn't work, maybe he had done the same? Anyway, works, posting this from my computer connected to my phones wifi.
Thanks everyone.

Ah, that would do it. I must have been thinking of something else. Are you using the default tethering or another app?

I have same problem. can't figure out the reason..
Had the same issue.
The cause in my case was that I did not follow the instructions of my provider. I forgot to configure the vodafone proxyserver.
Internet worked, mail worked but Windows Live would not connect.
After I configured my proxyserver everything worked great.

but how to configure it, please give some details, thx.
Would these proxy settings affect the VPN options too?
Everytime I try and connect to work even though WiFi is on the VPN connection always trys to use the gprs or 3g connection. Really really annoying..
I am still using WM5 and 2 different versions of WM5 have given me similar problems which I have not been able to solve yet. I have to use a proxy and even though I configure the proxy correctly, I can not access the internet. I have done the same configurations on the HTC TyTN and a Imate Jamin and they have no problems. I have delayed upgrading to WM6 due to all the problems others are having.
OK I did a hard reset no programs loaded & just configured the wifi. Tried connecting to Windows Live, Messenger & Hotmail through wifi worked fine.
Then I entered operator settings exactly as I had it before upgrading to WM6. With wifi still active I again tried connecting to the above but it still insists on connecting over 3G.
I went in Connections Settings & removed the MY ISP settings (which were O2 3G setting) & tried again. Even with wifi still active it would still look for the 3G settings & as I had deleted them it would not connect at all.
Really need to sort this out as I don't have an unlimited data plan (crappy O2 tariffs) but I can't get it to WL to connect over wifi.

How? I simply followed the instruction given by my provider.
My D810 even tries to connect to my 3G/GPRS on soft reset so I suspect it may have something to do with my Contacts with all these Windows Live Messenger contacts - it doesn't connect after I remove the Windows Live account from the phone.
The only way I can find to stop it from connecting to my 3G connection and connect through Wi-Fi is to force it to use anything but a connection to my mobile service provider:

Well after much messing about I reverted back to as default as I could using Mozzer's rom for Orange UK. Tried the vpn settings straight away and it worked perfectly, I can only assume that maybe in Mun's rom there are some settings missing that Orange UK doesn't like missing as that is the only difference on the phone now.
I've given up. Tried everything but Windows Live & Messenger still won't connect over wifi it will only connect over 3G. I'll just have to resist using Messenger & checking my Hotmail messages.
Other than this problem the Dopod SEA WM6 rom is brilliant. Nice & fast & very stable. TomTom is fast & smooth works flawlessly. Had no lock ups or crashes.

Try turning off the phone, leaving only the wifi on, sign in and turn phone back on again, works for me.
WIFI with LIVE
My unit is doing the same thing. What i did is connecting to WIFI first. Right after, i click on Windows Live, my unit will try to connect to GPRS. What i do is cancelling the connection and my unit will start using WIFI connection. The only way to stop it using GPRS and using WIFI right now is cancell the connection before it connects.

Does ps3 have built in wifi? I'm not sure, if it does then try the mobile hotspot built into Android, if your carrier doesn't allow that then try barnicle tether or open garden tether, both on market. They use ad-hoc wifi so idk if ps3 will like that. If so (or if ps3 doesn't have built in wifi) , connect a computer to the hotspot and internet connection share over Ethernet to the ps3.
Finally, if your carrier blocks tethering, you'll need to connect your phone to a vpn before all of that, which will hide all your traffic from the carrier.
Hope that helps

Not sure exactly what you are asking but you may want to try/ look into:
Settings-->Wireless and network-->Wi-Fi Direct Settings (if your PS3 is connected to your home internet network I think, I may be wrong here?? check this youtube) =
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCEawDprnOQ
or
AllShare App that comes stock with GS2....works with PS3 to connect via DLNA (DLNA is wireless like bluetooth or wifi)
Sorry if you were looking to just connect your PS3 to the internet thru your phone... then use barnacle tether or whatever
Let's not complicate it...yes, connect like you would anything else

Eh nevermind. I tried about 10 different tethering apps. None work because ps3 doesn't use ad-hoc. I guess....thanks anyways.
It will work.
1. Setup a new APN you can use the epc.tmobile.com APN but rename it to Free Tether or something.
2. Be sure that its selected as your default.
3. Start the WiFi Hotspot that came with the phone. Set it up if you need to...ie SSID and Password.
4. Check to see if the PS3 recognizes the device.
Setting up the new APN stop the T-Mobile upsell page from coming on.
It should be something like this.

When my roommates failed to fork up their part of the internet bill I played battlefield 3 off my tether for a full month with minimal issues the connection was never a problem connect ps3 to your phone like any other wifi router provided you are using the built in wireless tethering functionality which can be enabeled if you are rooted by simply freezing or uninstalling the system "tethering manager" app.

Alright, so let me first start off by saying, I CANNOT GET "real" Internet, I drive Semi's for a living, so im not stationary....
What I want to do:
Connect My Xbox 360 via Wired or Wireless Connection
Use my phones LTE Connection
Play GTAV with friends In my rig....
Things I Have done:
Rooted my Note 4
Installed Supersu
Installed PdaNet+ (works for tethering my laptop, but thats it)
Installed Wifi Tether Router
Installed GalaxyTools
(not all of these were in this order....only the ones that mattered)
Results:
Xbox picks up the SSID for Native Hotspot, and FOXfi/PdaNet+
Xbox Does not pickup anything from WiFi Tether Router (or any device for that matter)
When I connect Via native/foxfi hotspot, it rarely connects to the "network" and if it does, it fails to connect to the "internet"
If someone has a similar situation and has figured it out, i would LOVE to hear your solutions...and I cannot justify paying 50$ a month for 5 gb of data when i already pay over 300 for 4 lines and unlimited everything......

Just get the hotspot hack going and connect to your phone that way. I did it with my Galaxy S3 a while back. A game like GTA V... not sure how well the multiplayer will be and if the host connection will let you join unless you set up a private match and host. Even still, you might have issues with your friends not being able to connect to you as the host though or it just being a glitchy mess . (Halo Reach was like that)
But yeh, get the hotspot hack going and there shouldnt be any hiccups. Just put the password in that you set it as on your phone for the corresponding SSID. Xbox Live should connect in seconds.
not sure what you mean by hotspot hack, is it called that? or is that what everyone knows it as? because galaxytools opens the hotspot, but i get no internet connection....

It might be your location. Are you an Owner-Op, OTR, Regional or Dedicated route? Yes, i have done it in the past when dealing with idiots who join games and try to get IP addresses and knock ya offline for anywhere from 5 minutes to 24 hrs, depe ding on the kind of host booter they were using. Joining a party is the same way. The program Lanc makes it to where 7 year olds can do this crap now a days.
In my experience, i just made my phone a hotspot, rescanned for connections on the xbox, connected and did 'Test Connection' and had no problems. I never ran into the issues youre having.

I found out the hard way when watching my nieces at my sisters, brought my 360(slim) to kill the time, that their comcast router wouldnt allow my 360 to connect to the internet. After hours of searching, troubleshooting.. changing channels .. i HAD to use the wireless adapter from my old arcade 360. ok i see that sprint blocks that but i'm working on a solution ill get back to you but one suggestion is try this try changing your LTE to 4G, 3G, or 2G. Sprint has supposedly blocked the free tethering for LTE so try another band in till i get a solution. you can find this option under settings<Mobile networks change the network mode either to wcdma/gsm or just gsm and try those out under foxfi or pdanet.

try using 4G instead of LTE go to settings<Mobile Network and change the network mode to wcdma apparently LTE is not allowing the tether apps
I can already do it via PDA Net (or FoxFi) via a USB connection or wirelessly if I use a pin lock instead of knock code... but what about hooking directly to my router.

I used to do it with my Asus RT-N16 and I believe G2 at the time. The problem you run into is that today's high end phones draw more power than a USB 2.0 port can put out, so the phone will end up dying even if plugged in. I was able to get it to work though, I just put my phone in wired tether mode.

Do you have root? If yes, follow the instructions by @geoff5093 here:

It should also work for usb tethering.
I'm not rooted but I'll probably end up going that route.
I just don't get what information the router is looking for. When I dial #777 on my phone I get an error message from verizon.

If you can get your phone into wired tethered mode, I don't believe you need that information.
This is the most badly-afflicting bug that I've came across after Android Q update!
When BT is on, the WiFi speed is painstakingly slow, videos keep on buffering and webpages not loading-type of slow. The comparison with BT on and off can clearly be seen in the screenshot below. Is there any workaround?

I get 43Mbps up and 15Mbps down which is normal for me, with wifi by itself or with bluetooth on and playing music to an external speaker, No difference in speed.
I am connected to my router using 5Ghz with a link speed of 433Mbps according to my 8pro`s network details in settings/wifi.
https://i.imgur.com/3kEgzSR.png
It's normal on 2.4 GHz
It's a fairly common problem with most old routers, and most phones:
Bluetooth and wifi work on the same 2.4GHz frequency, which causes interference. That'd why you'd find an advice to keep your Bluetooth headset away from your router inside the user info booklet in the headset packaging.
Solution is to switch your wifi to 5GHz if the option is available. If not, buy a new router that supports it, or stop using Bluetooth while wifi is on
N.B. If you have some old phones and laptops, check if they support 5GHz, or you'll have only your phone connected to wifi!
5GHz indeed. And if your router doesn't suport the 5GHz band try this.

I get your point but in Android 9 this wasn't an issue.
try different wifi in a different location, I think there is something interfering with your wifi signal.

It was an issue for me in android 9 as well!
I have an old router that I don't plan to change (compatible with every old device in the family) so I've grown used to the problem with every device I own.

No interference. I'm sure the culprit is A10 update.

Stop using bluetooth while wifi is on as solution?? Bruh now every devices are connected with bluetooth like earphones and watches. Switch to 5ghz doesnt really help or buying new router doesnt help as well because that isnt a solution but dodging the problem which could occur anytime.
