Attention themers, I would like to (re)draw your attentions to the VillainTheme system that launched earlier this year.
Full information can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207017
Basically this is a theme system where you make your theme following the above guidelines and update.zip method and then your theme can theoretically be applied on any phone and on any rom.
This should save you a heck of a lot of time in making different versions for different things, and also means that your theme can be used by a far wider range of people.
Please give a lot of consideration to using this.
When it first launched it had quite an impact, but however since then it seems to have been somewhat forgotten, and new themers have missed it altogether.
I am using this for a long time now

Yes I was aware you used it, may I suggest you change your thread name to [VRT] rather than just putting VRT in the general name?
This post was more to let other people know, as far as I can see you are the only person to use this system on their s3 themes.

I will be the second!
I first realised this existed when I came to the SGS3. This is something that had been missing from the HTC desire world. I don't think anyone there knows about this.
IMHO this is a game changer! Great stuff.
If/when I theme, I will definitely use this.
used it myself when I've "converted" other peoples themes to run on my phone Brilliant and simple system which I never understood why more themers havent used
morphed theme packages are really great and time saving, hoping for the themers to adapt it soon via this template
Excellent work guys...
I'm using your flasher for my Themes for 2-3 days now...
Thanks a lot...
Sent from my Note with Mixed Theme
Thanks for your contribution .
The VillanTheme system is pretty neat. Always liked metamorph and this is similar but at the flashable level.
Does the VillanTheme system back up original assets? The reason I ask is if a user flashes a villantheme that applies changes to 10 image assets. The user then flashes another villantheme that only applies changes to 5 of the 10 images that were just changed. Is the user then faced with a mix of two themes as the second theme didn't touch the other assets from the first theme?
Thanks.
thanks for theme

It doesn't yet, but I mentioned adding this ability to the Villain Tools App to the dev and he mentioned he has seen it in scripts so there is hope.
I have problems with the latest version.

Heck ya. Great concept. I'll by trying this out for sure. I can't stand updating on EVERY ROM BUILD.
I've been looking for a resolution for a while now and I am still no nearer to sorting out my problem with VRT
I'm using VillianROM 1.1.0 LFB and CWM Touch 6.0.1.0. I do exactly this:
Copy zip from PC to phone storage (not external SD card)
Reboot into Recovery.
Clear Cache partition
Clear Dalvik cache
Flash zip from internal SD
Everything is reported as being successful.
Reboot... nothing changes. This is with Vertumus VRT Jelly Bean Domination (which others report as working fine).
The strange thing is, I already have JB Domination flashed on this exact ROM, yet when I tried a clean install (cleared System, data, cache adn preload, etc, in CWM) and installed VillainROM from CWM, booted, set up, rebooted to recovery and flashed JB Domination, it doesn't work.
So, I have a Nandroid backup where it has worked, but now doing a fresh install it doesn't work. And also, on my Nandroid backup (which I use now daily) it doesn't work at all.
No VRT theme will flash to my phone
EDIT:
I've also tried mounting /system and /data before flashing.
seshmaru.... where are ruuuu?
Excellent work guys...
Any chance to update the scrip to make it compatible with CWM 6.0.1.2?
Work well with new recovery.

just to make sure... If i want a theme- put it on sd card, rename it to update, apply update, and reboot??? It doesn't work for me. It stays stuck on the G1 screen. Does it have something to do with rom i'm using: update-cm-4.1.9.2-signed???
Just in case... Yes its rooted, I've even tried other HERO ROMS(and i have successfull), but 4 some reason I don't know how to apply a theme. And YES!! I'm a n00b.
Thanx in advance
yes your process is correct, BUT you have to make sure the theme you apply is matched with your rom. if you have cm 4.1.9.2 rom, you have to make sure you get the 4.1.9.2 compataible theme. also some themes may take up to 10 minutes to fully boot up.
-insert flame here-
the theme must be compatible with the rom like for 4.1.9.2 the theme has to be based off of the 4.1.9.2 theme template. the same goes for any rom and theme. as long as they are compatible then there shouldn't be any problems. if you want a bigger choice of themes then the stable roms are better.
but yeah, check to see if your theme is compatible with 4.1.9.2, if it isn't then that is the problem.
also you have the process correct.
This should really be in the Q&A section, it seems you haven't really read much of what themes are about. You can only flash themes made SPECIFICALLY for the rom you are running (In your case cm 4.1.9.2) Since I don't see too many themes around made for that rom, I'll assume you're flashing a theme not made for the rom this will cause the G1 screen loop.
To get back to your old system, just flash the rom OR the theme template again and you should be good to go. Next time match the theme versions with rom versions before you go flashing.

First, even though your question is about a THEME, it's still a question and should go in the Q&A section.
In response, your theme MUST be compatible with your rom. So if the theme you are trying is not CM 4.1.9.2 compatible, then you COULD get problems.
EDIT: DAMN, did it really take me so long that 4 people answered before I did? geez lol
Fast guns around here, I think he gets the point though :]
slow pokes =)
Just to clarify to further help you understand, a theme is composed of many of the same files as the original ROM. However, this time around they have been modified to look like what you see as the theme. Therefore, when you install a theme, you are actually replacing those files with the ones with different looks. That is why you need to make sure your theme is made for the ROM, because different programs and files, chances are, will not work and will result in a bootloop.
I figured I would bring this up here so developers can look in to this, and see if there really is an issue and why. I recently had a theme that worked on one phone and not on another. It would get stuck at the G1 start screen.
The only difference was that the phone that worked had haykuro's SPL that is needed to run hero ROMs, the other had the SPL with the version that ended in -3000. Both SPLs have the skating androids screen.
Both had:
Cyan 4.0.4
Cyan recovery 1.4
App2sd
I later flashed the haykuro SPL, and tried again, it worked fine.
I used a spare memory card to flash the theme, so both phones were reading the same file to apply the theme, and the same file was used after applying the new SPL and then worked.
I first posted over at Android community. here is the link just in case I forgot anything here. Hopefully I provided all the info needed.
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/spl-cause-theme-to-not-work-25160/
Would it be enough to just add a disclaimer to theme threads stating that SPL 1.33.2005 is required? I think that the majority has already gone over to that SPL.

Actually, I think most users of the Cyanogen mod have NOT switched over. Many of us have never loaded a Hero ROM, and maybe never will. But, I have had this problem a couple of times that the theme makers do not take the SPL issue into effect, and their theme simply will not work on a phone with HardSPL or EngineeringSPL.
Theme makers should make themselves aware of the size limitations and take them into account. Or, they should make it clear that their theme REQUIRES the Haykuro SPL. But they will be limiting their audience in that case.

Thing is, the theme was just a basic theme, it did not add any extra programs or the new launcher or anything other than cosmetic changes. The theme worked on the older builds, pre cyan 4.0, and I asked the guy to port it.

How big was the theme? Were you coming over from a different theme? Did you wipe before applying the theme? If you did wipe, did you also wipe the ext partition? Afaik most themes will fit ok on a regular phone.
Coming from stock, no wipe, theme file size 14mb.

And the size of the theme was?
Also, did your theme include any extra mods? e.g. loccy's browser, advanced launcher etc.?
I'm about to go to work, but maybe someone could run this theme through the apk optimizer from the dev thread? If not, upload it and I'll do it(not sure when that'll be).

14mb and no extras, cosmetic only. I applied the new SPL and got it running, just thought I would mention the problem so people would be aware.
some themes do add extra things into system/app and that can cause the problem
especially since cyan's roms already are near the limit (he has gone over a couple times)
so if you add just a couple of things like the HTC_IME.apk the HTCMusic.apk and some widgets to system/app it can overload it.

Well this didn't add anything like that so I don't know. Kind of sucks that not everyone can run the new SPL, and some people have issues with ROMs and themes.
The theme size was 14mb??! Most likely it was just too big for your phone. Meaning that one phone just didnt have enough space for the whole theme to fit, so the whole theme wasnt copied over which lead to a boot loop.
This is not the fault of the Dev. this is just a case where the phone with haykuros spl had more space for themes..and the other didnt.

Yeah, I don't blame the dev, just think people should be aware of the issue.
The new SPL is as easy as flashing a ROM correct? I've been trying to find out as much info on updating mine as possible before I do. I've read if done wrong, bricked phone. I've read threads that give some weird steps, that I really wouldn't think are necessary. I have the newest radio version and I already checked the PVT and I'm good to go. So to update all I would need to do is flash the new SPL right? Any special procedures I should do before I brick my phone? Thanks
Checking for PVT is the only real extra step, the rest is just like flashing a ROM. As long as you are PVT you are fine, just don't interrupt the process, unlike flashing a ROM if you mess up the SPL its bricked good.
Honest, I searched forever in XDA-Dev and in Google - couldn't find this answer for what is probably a very simple question.
So I'm new to the G1 - but generally not hacking, theme'ing, flashing in general (iPhone, Winmo, etc.).
I've rooted my phone, installed the Cyanogen Recovery Image, SPL, radio, etc. and CyanogenMod's 4.0.4 Stable ROM. All is grand with it.
I would like to now try some appropriate themes (I know all are not compatible) but want to be able to restore to the current native CM theme. In fact some theme developers suggest always going back to the default before trying their themes to rule out glitches/errors.
So that's my question - where do i find just the theme for the ROM I'm on (CM 4.04) to keep as a backup just in case I hate so and so's mickey mouse theme (no offense to any Disney lovers out there) and want to go back?
I've searched everywhere for this "default" theme and unless people are meaning the full CM ROM image (which sounds like a wipe/restore not a re-theme process), I can't find it anywhere.
Sorry again if I'm just not understanding this all just yet. Only been on the phone for three days.

The theme template is in the 4.04 thread, but you really don't need it. Just reflash the ROM. It won't erase any data or settings and you will get the default look back.

best thing to do is just keep a fresh copy of the ROM itself on your /sdcard. The neat thing about Cyan's recovery is you can flash any .zip from /sdcard so it shouldn't be too hard when going between theme's and the normal theme/rom.
if all you want is the theme itself for modding, go to cyanogen's stable thread and download the theme template in the opener.

Hmm you must have missed the first thread: Questions about themes go here.
you guys are awesome...
...I've missed this place being over in the iPhone world for a while...
So you've answered my question (thanks to both of you) but have of course caused a follow-up question or three...So I'm getting a little light bulb over my head and it's "all" getting clearer.
The CM 4.0.4 ROM is not a single flash file (like NBH or IPSW files from Winmo or Apple land) but a file by file image copy? Is that pretty close?
So re-flashing WITHOUT a data wipe (from the new cool CM recovery image thingy) is more like a reinstall of Windows over top of an existing install instead of (what i thought it was) a sector by sector flash disk re-imaging process?
That would make sense - why else is a wipe important.
So after any theme, if I re-flash the CM 4.0.4 it will overwrite the files the new theme changed, but not my installed apps, settings or data? Does any parts of old themes get left behind like if the new theme has more sound files than CM's 4.0.4 ROM had for instance?
Sorry for all the noob'ish questions. I'm really loving this Android process and can see how much easier it's going to be to try fun stuff than either iPhone or even WinMo was/is.
Just have tons to read up on and learn.
Again, appreciate all the help, expecially as these questions are now not "theme specific" any longer.

Yeah but if you have the ROM on your card, then it's quicker to flash that than hop on your computer, download the template, transfer via usb and flash it

No nothing will be left behind after reflashing a ROM, your apps, settings, data, or anything else in the /data partition on your phone will not be lost. All wiping does is format /data.
First off, I'm not a dev. I'm just a guy with 5 kids who plays with his phone to help keep his sanity. But with CarpeNoctem getting a new phone and Tun4f1sh only making an add-on, I needed my own rom.
Secondly, I'm making this for myself and just sharing. I'm open to fixing bugs, but not adding features. Sorry.
Finally, THANKS to:
g4rb4ge, for porting MIUI to the G2.
MIUIAndroid.com, for the base rom and translations.
CarpeNoctem, for getting me hooked on this rom.
Tun4f1sh, For Bulletproof and making me want to learn more.
Andy Thompson, for the Extended Settings mod and controls.
Tsubus, rmk40, and Juwe11, for optimization scripts.
Dsixda, for his awesome Android kitchen.
What is Mini Mi?
Nothing, or as close to nothing as I can make it.
I wanted to make the smallest rom possible, while still being able to use all of the MIUI features.
Changes:
Removed apk's, themes, media, and fonts I didn't use
Zipaligned
Added Extended Settings mod and MIUI settings app
Added Genie Widget (for lockscreen weather)
Added memory management, sdcard, zipalign, and ILWT fixes scripts
I left the stock CM kernel, if you don't like it flash one of your choice.
Suggested Add-ons:
Bulletproof MIUI Add-on from Tun4f1sh.
ILWT Kernel, ILWT OC daemon, and WiFi calling add-on from Tsubus.
Tiamat Kernel from Cayniarb.
SUperuser 3.0.7 from ChainsDD
Pershoot Kernel
HTC_IME or Jonasl's Themer (For prediction on physical keyboard)
MIUI Small MMS Fix from silverton
Download Link:
2.01.06
2.01.13
2.01.20
Going to give it a whirl. Really appreciate the work! ;]
Downloading now. Ill try it tomorrow(Monday) without "Bulletproof MIUI Pack" and then Tuesday with and let everyone know how it goes. Thanks for a new roms!

Seeing as I already had MIUI installed, just cleared cache. I'll try doing a full wipe, seeing as how reflashing still didn't fix the issue.
EDIT: Negative. Even a full wipe didn't fix it for me :[

Nope, no MIUI version does because very few phones have physical keyboards. All attention goes to soft IME's. But you can look here. You'll have to use a hex editor to make your own keymap, but everything you need is on his github.

Can you be more specific about what apks you pulled, what themes you pulled (since there is only one theme that comes with MIUI I don't see what could be slimmed down), and the fonts you got rid of? MIUI is already pretty barebones in terms of system overhead and package size so I'm curious as to how your design philosophy works.

Could you also go into some more detail as to what this means and how each script works? I'm not really much of a dev, I just benefit from the effort of others but I do love my documentation, especially before I flash a new rom.
Thanks for the reply.
Edit: Hey as a bit of an aside, for permission controls I always suggest LBE Security Control. It's very effective at not breaking roms yet helping your sense of security. It's free on the market so you could theoretically pre package it in your rom. I usually suggest it since most baked in permission control is often fundamentally broken.
Sure. MiTalk, MiuiStats, and a couple others I can't remember off hand. I removed the Arabic, Thai, and Hebrew fonts, the some of the ringtones and pictures I hated, TTS info for Italian, French, and German, the extra lockscreens in the media folder, and added a smaller bootanimation. I'm going to try to slim it down a little more next week too. I'll make a list.
As for the scripts, in the system/etc/init.d folder there's the SDcard fix which changes the read ahead cache, zipalign which verifies all apks are zipaligned at boot, ramscript which tunes the memory manager, and ilwt-fixes that fixes Flash in the browser.

This rom is modified from MIUI android to work with clk bootloader. Please give MIUI Android all the credit.
Converted from the latest MIUI available 2.3.9
The goal of this thread is for two things. I have one main goal, STABLILITY. I will keep all roms I create. Their currently are two versions.
-Stock- I will keep up to date with MIUI and release CLK versions to accompy their magldr versions. The stock rom will stay stock, that means no changes!
-Tweaked- The tweaked rom will offer things more towards my preferance, or possibly by request. Currently the only difference between Stock and Tweaked is in the tweaked version MIUI launcher has been removed and replaced with Go Launcher. If you would like to see something included in this rom, please post.

MIUI has many neat features.
1. Long press on the toggle switch will take you to that options settings.
2. Secrecy mode disables text, and call logs to let someone look at your phone.
3. Holding the home key on the lock screen activates the flash light.
New MiUi means wat d features?

thanks for this one, works nicely.
will stick with it for now..
Just a head's up - for those of you who like as much internal space for apps as possible, a 150/5 partition is more than sufficient to run this ROM, considering the extracted /system size is about 137MB.
I used that size, worked fine for me.

No worries bud, we all have to start somewhere.
A good measure of what partition size you need is by checking the extracted size of all the files going into the /system partition in your ROM zip (usually just the "system" folder in a ROM zip file, but could include other directories, depending on how the ROM installs), and then rounding up to the nearest multiple of 10.
In other words, if I built a ROM, and saw the extracted "system" directory (and/or any other directory being extracted to /system) in the ROM works out to be around 173MB, I'd recommend using a 180MB partition for /system.
Keep up the good work, really useful to have a CLK version of MIUI.

Sorry for a noob question
But can we have a link to all the included apps with the basic MIUI ROm?
Thanks

What exactly are you asking? Are you wanting to know what apps are included or are you wanting to download the apps to another rom?
I can extract the apps, but I can't guarantee they will work on anything but this system.

I don't quite get what you're looking for, please explain it a bit further.
If you're asking where to find the standard MIUI apps to add to this ROM, then you must have missed in the OP that no changes have been made, and hence all the standard included apps are in this ROM already.
Alternatively, if you want all the basic MIUI apps for something else, why not just download the ROM, and extract those you want from the ROM zip?
Sorry if I don't quite get what you meant.
MrP.
EDIT: kylew1212 beat me to it.
This rom was for personal use. But I use this rom, with a little tweaking. I use go launcher so that my home screen isn't cluttered. Would anyone be interested in a miui version with a little tweaking? I will keep the stock one but I may build a tweaked version. Let me know if interested.

No problem, happy to help you out - more devs on the scene can only benefit the community, so a helping start is a worthwhile long-term action.

Sorry I'm new to flashing roms and after lots of searching I decided I wanted a basic, sleek ROM like this one. Unfortunately I don't understand the partition part. Can anyone help me out?

Firstly, thanks, i'd like to have it untweaked. Stock is Stock. Ya we al may do without that Xiaomi account
color branding
I have a question for you all, hoping I can solve this, finally...after months.
I am using MIUI for months now, with Tytungs r14 kernel. (also tried Dorimanx kernel, but that one has the same issue)
This solves the majority of the color branding issues, but you will get a 'full' fix upon changing the MIUI launcher settings to 'hi-res', which massively destroys the smoothness of the scrolling.
MIUI themselves say it can't happen, though I still have this g**damn color branding issue, when not using hi-res scrolling. There has to be something in that launcher (with other launchers like adw, go launcher, launcherpro, this can be simply fixed by completely disabling the scrolling cache in those settings) to fix this.
Does anybody know how to do this with the MIUI launcher? I love MIUI, but I want something that looks 100%, and i can't live with the color branding stuff (as it also shows in the wallpapers).

This is a completely stock rom. The reason I say it was made for my personal use is because I prefer Clk over Magldr. MIUI only publishes a Magldr version. I converted this Magldr version (for my myself) to clk. I changed nothing else. It is completely stock except now it works on two bootloaders instead of one. I uploaded the original(magldr) and my own(clk).

I have previously written a guide. Scroll down about two paragraphs and It tells all about partition sizes.

Honestly I'm not sure what color branding issures are.. Is that like lines going through the screen at random times?
Also have you tried newer versions of MIUI? Possibly they fixed this unknowingly? Sorry I'm not very much help on this at the moment..

I will look some examples tomorrow and show you what I mean.
Don't be sorry, buddy
I managed for now with the hi res setting and it is not as choppy as it used to be. But in hopes to fix this, I will get back to you on this. Thanks for replying!

I don't want to promise you anything because I don't know if I can fix it or not. I'm starting to work on porting MIUI 4.0 to the HD2. If I get a bootable version I will upload it.
