Lg spectrum and nitro hd are both 720p phones with the same screen technology but in these tests the lg nitro hd came out the worst. I wonder why?
http://blog.laptopmag.com/smartphone-screen-shoot-out-which-has-the-best-high-def-display
check your nitro by tilting it personally !
it is much better than in pics !
basically the spectrum, p930 and the other 4 variants use the true hd display !
so there should be no difference at all !
yea, i would also say that my screen looks much better than the one in those pictures even with my screen protector on.
anybody else have a camera and these 4 phones to re-test this? lol
my take on the review:
1. the categories were the nitro didn't compare to the spectrum were not scientific, they were *eyeballed* and opinions & favorites were decided.
2. I've comared my nitro sidebyside with the nexus and side viewing angles appeared better to me on the nitro, not the nexus. many other reviews conclude the same.
3. color accuracy. i think the reason the nitro performed poorly in this category s due to how it handles wallpapers, I know with my nitro, with stock gb, wallpapers i downloaded and used did not render well. in fact, i chose not to use them due to this.
this could explain why the nitro scored last while the spectrum scored 1st, also, subjective testing here as well.
4. sharpness. I have no idea why their nitro did not dominate this category because I am continually impressed by the sharpness of text on my nitro screen.
5. outdoor visibility. yep, neither the spectrum nor the nitro can compete with the over-saturated colors of the nexus in full daylight.
so while i can sort out why the nitro scored as it did, I am surprised the nexus won. although it's easy to fall for the saturation levels and blacks so perhaps that is why.
but for reading and the primary things i do on my device, how the nitro handles the color white is outstanding and makes a more meaningful impact to my viewing experience.

"text on the Nitro HD appeared far more grainy than it did on any of the other displays."
Wow, ANYONE that has a clue about how to focus a camera can see that the image they *tried* to take of the Nitro up-close was out-of-focus!! And yet they blamed it on the Nitro?
Yeah, I pretty much lost any respect for that comparison test when I saw that.
I'm PLENTY happy with my Nitro screen
How about video quality? in my opinion the nitro should have the best hd video and picture quality. can anyone compare that to galaxy nexus because ive seen a video on youtube where the true hd ips screen killed the samoled hd in picture quality.Thx for help

i've seen no other display as clear and vibrant like the one in the nitro !
the only reason the phone is still with me is its display
my friend owns a galaxy s3 and a galaxy nexus and believe me, nitro hd has a much much better display than the other two !
the only thing super amoleds are better was power saving and a tad higher brightness. but the nitro has a super crisp display !

I own both the Nitro HD and the GS3. While I love the sharpness of the nitro screen, its not "much much better" than the gs3. If I didn't have so many reliability issues with my nitro, I might've stuck with it.

There is a very subjective element to the amoled vs lcd discussion. I think amoled looks a little brighter, but it's over saturated. Some people prefer it. LCD also does better outdoors.
What I'm saying is that the nitro screen is sharper. That is the only advantage the nitro has over
the gs3 at this time. I do prefer being able to see the screen in broad daylight.

I am thinking of getting a Defy as a free upgrade to my Hero. Reviews of camera seem mixed but general impression is that it's not brilliant, especially in low light. Interested to hear the views of people here.
You can compare the photos from defy with various other phones, including N8, iPhone4 on gsmarena site. Just click on some of the latest reviews, doesnt matter which phone, and go to the camera section of the review. There is a photo compare tool.
Thanks. That was helpful but I am more interested in the low light performance.

I was pleasantly suprised with the quality of the flash. up to a metre or 2 it is very effective and doesn't wash out the photo like some others. All in all I am pleases with the camera - thats just my opinion though.
Thanks. I am almost certainly going to get one. The nagging doubt in the back of my mind is the speaker issue. Difficult to know how much of a problem it really is. People who don't have the issue (obviously) don't post to forums
None of those Cell Cameras are that cool in low light compared to a DSLR. What would really help is a camera app that writes out a dng file so that one can properly posprocess this in say Lightroom/Photoshop/Noiseware.
Just for completeness shake, the camera module seems to be a MT9PT012 ...

IMHO - flash and camera is pretty awful. Here's a shot with flash, I even gave it +20 brightness in Gimp:

Then again, I might be spoiled by these babies:
Ironically - That was shot with my HTC Desire
I guess the Defy's camera is just below cell-phone average. It should't be your only camera, but for "Hey this looks fun!" shots it'll do fine.
I really like my defy but, honestly, the camera is not the best part.
Also the display looks not so brilliant as the desire's one.
I'm not saying they're bad, just they're not wonderful, but considering defy's price it's absolutely fair.
Well, one thing none of the others can do is H2Oing it. I just filmed in water, definitely better results than any other phone attempting the same
I'm using the Camera360 app. There is a filter called "Effect enhancement". If i you this one, the pictures look better - the ones taken in short range. Ok, they do look a bit "artifical", but for me its ok. There is a "free" version of that app for trying out...
The Defy is not the first Android i bought, but it will be the first Android, which will not be sold again. I really like this phone...
Maybe there will be some kind of camera-optimization. Until then, i will take my digi-cam for "more important" pictures to make.
Best regards
Stefan
Here is sample picture, resized, with flash and taken with camera360 app.
This was taken with a Galaxy S
This was taken with the Defy, different day so not a direct comparison. The weather was worse and it was cloudy. Hope this give you an idea of comparison though.
Defy on macro with flash
Defy with macro no flash. Shows good detail.
thanks
Photos aren't that great but they're not awful. I do find that the built in editing (kodak perfect touch) does an excellent job though. The macro mode and color reproduction aren't as good as my vibrant. But overall im satisfied.

yeah I agree that kodak perfect touch enhancement works well
What about Videos in 720p ?
Anyone succeed to take videos in 720p with Froyo 2.2 ?
have you tryed the kodak perfect touch option?? It's excelent! for night pics, and remember to use the "night" mode in dark places
imo, It's good++
I took pictures with it for the first time today. I did not like the quality of the pictures. My first impressions:
Pros: The LED flash is bright and puts my old BB Curve to shame. You could use it to blind a night time attacker if you could instantly turn it on with an external button.
The interface to take pictures is pretty good and easy to use.
Cons:
-Colors are muddy and off color even when shot outdoors.
-Colors with the flash are not automatically corrected and show up with the blue/white color cast of the LED flash.
-Color space compression is very noticable with banding visible under various conditions.
-Slow to take a picture because it does not focus until you click the onscreen button to take the photo.
I thought video was better on balance than the camera but it is rather poor in low light (as expected). I hope that I will learn to get better results with it after more testing but I'm glad it's not a primary reason for me to own the Defy.
-felipe
What about 720p videos?
Could someone try it?with froyo??
I found the camera pretty good in comparaison of my old phone.
But there's a hudge miss on the native camera app: you cannot change the JPG compression and by default it's very very compressed! Some have their 5Mpxl pictures that takes around 300kB (it should be 1.5MB at least!).
Maybe if someone know a way to change this settings it would be nice for improving the quality of the final picture
I really like the Vignette app for the camera, it's old school styles go rather well with the "performance" of the camear

Galaxy Nexus has a 720p Super Amoled Display, as noted HERE. The Pentile display is on the "Photon"
I would say this device will be neck to neck with the Galaxy Nexus, once we have ICS
no actually cordell12 the galaxy nexus does use pentile.
its the samoled+ displays like taht of our phones that doesnt have pentile
I just compared my e4gt side by side to a nexus and the screen looked the same. I know the nexus has a higher resolution but I couldn't tell from looking.

pentile is the subpixel structure of the display. super amoled HD & the photon super lcd both use it. the super amoled subpixels are arranged in such a way that the blue & red are double the thickness of a single subpixel followed by a single green subpixel of regular thickness. the photon is a bit different that it also has a white subpixel alternating with the green subpixel, known as RGBW.
RGB pentile

the one place you will definitely tell the difference is in the web browser. the smaller text will be readable at any zoom level, unlike the sgs2.
The Nexus definitely shows the resolution advantage. Hell, the iphone 4s shows clear benefits with a screen much smaller in size (pixel density is very important as well imo). The overlooked difference between the E4GT and the Nexus is the Samsung vs Google update thing.... doesn't anyone remember waiting tirelessly for Samsung on every device they "support?"
And LTE is ridiculous compared to Sprint 4G in Chicago.

So in theory the Sumer Amoled pentile screen (720p) is better than the one in Samsung Galaxy SII Epic 4G Touch?
Have you seen both phones side by side?
I am afraid because Droid Bionic (piece of crap), had a pentile screen and MAN it was HORRIBLE
A prevalent question on these Nitro forums is whether or not to buy it...As compared to <whatever> phone. I think the most common comparison is with the Samsung Galaxy S2.
The problem is, the GS2 is an 800x480 resolution phone. To get an idea of why that doesn't make sense, go ahead and set your laptop's screen resolution to 800x600. How's that look to you? Now walk over to your computer and set it to 1280x800, how's that?
Not exactly a controlled and scientific comparison right? Different systems, different screens, different just about everything.
IMHO, if you're considering the Nitro and want to compare it to something?...Then there's really only 1 other phone (in the US, anyway); the HTC Rezound which has the exact same CPU/GPU chipset and 1280x720 screen (LCD though, not IPS). You could also compare with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, there's a LOT of variances there too but it's one of the only phones that also has the 1280x720 screen.
I stress the commonality of 1280x720 because not everything works properly (or even at all) when trying to display at this resolution and also there's potential draw delays to compensate. So make sure you're looking at the other phones that could share this same hurdle so you set your expectations accordingly.
good points, thanks!
To add two more 720P phones were announced at ces coming to AT&T. The Sony Xperia Ion and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD.
@Namura: Appreciate the "cold water" treatment. might make others think twice both for flaming the P930 and the comparison to other units.
@Kindawack: prototypes/announced phones don't figure into what he is talking about, as they are not market launched yet.

Yeah, I wonder about the validity of their info as well. Considering the Samsung Note LTE for AT&T was only announced yesterday at CES...With the only confirms being 1.5GHz Qualcomm chipset (but no verification as to which model) and availability as "in the coming months"...Whereas that pdadb shows it as releasing in Feb and has the same APQ8060 chip as our Nitro.
man, i am way past waiting for the next kick ass phone to be released. I had been waiting since the droid bionic announcement (the 1st one ;-0) prior to getting this nitro.

I am constantly hoping for a CWM breakthrough for our phone but then I remember that I am actually 100% satisfied with my rooted, debloated, blue icon and battery mod, go launcher ex Nitro, then I don't worry about CWM as much.
Same here. As long I am rooted, debloated, custom launcher (zean) and sim unlocked I am good. Custom roms would nice but a lot of time, they are a pain to keep up.

I know benchmarks dont mean squat, but I am surprised how Nitro HD fairs well in any 3D benchmarks especially with 720p screen and sub-optimised soft. See attached Antutu benchmark. Barely behind Galaxy Nexus with ICS.
I just fired up Shadowgun and it does drop a frame here and there. No Tegra afterall but 4.5 inch 720p is looking better than I remember playing on Atrix 4G.
LMAO
IPS is just one type of LCD,
IPS, MVA, PVA, ASV are all good screen types,
the only bad screen is TN, which is never used on high end android devices.
AMOLED sucks IMO, over saturated, and your vision killer. Dont even mention most of the AMOLED on the market is pentile display.

Holy cow. That thing is beautiful. Maybe they've been listening to the customers by bringing back the SD slot etc. The choice of colours is pretty nice too. Also, anyone have any clarification on what this "with Google" thing is about, is it something to do with the multi-manufacturer/multi-nexus information we had a while ago, or is it simply going to be placed on all android phones in future?

"With Google" I suspect it is a branding that is gong to be coming to all devices running JB out of the gate going forward.
As nice as this device looks, is this supposed to compete with the Note 2? It seems to have no extra software tailored to use the extra real estate in any meaningful way over the One S even. Likewise 2000mAh battery on a 1080p screen? Unless the sharp screen technology is extremely energy efficient or I'd be surprised to see the device push 3 hours of screen on time at automatic brightness, which given its push as a media consuming / watching device because of its full HD screen is a bit woeful.
To me the device is a bit like 'the emperors new clothes'.... But damn they are sexy clothes.....

I think you're right, it's neither here or there in terms of size. If they were going to go direct with the Samsung they needed a bigger battery (at least 3000mah) and a 5.5 inch screen. I think this is just a "big phone", not a true phablet.
Holy crap!
That is amazing!
I'd trade in my HOX for that bad boy!
It has seriously good looks, has an MicroSD card slot, yes yes yes!
Onboard storage is lacking but I'm guessing that's to conserve space for the MicroSD slot, so meh...
I wonder how thin and light it is!
Its also called the Butterfly not the Butterly.
If you ask me, and you haven't, but I'll put my two cents worth in anyway! It just looks a little taller than the One X. Width and depth seem similar given the "impression" the pics give. Obviously HTC have more to offer than just a bigger screen unlike Apple with their iPhone 5!!!!
Pixel Density of 440ppi as opposed to the iPhone 5's 326ppi, take that retina display!
D: I hope this comes to Europe it looks amazing!

And nagging devs to optimize games for Tegra3!
I'm almost annoyed I'm in a contract for my HOX now as I know I'm going to want that so hard when it's released!
So much for HTC not diluting the market this year!!!
This phone will also be waterproof, the nexus variant will be released when the LG nexus is announced. It says on the back of the device with google because it probably has the hardware specs that meet the standards of the Nexus program.
Their are a lot if people saying that this phone has with google because it runs jelly bean out the box not true. Their are many device being released with jelly bean with no with google on the back if it.
Another reason why I believe this is a nexus phone because surely when they unveiled it they would have talked about the hardware but they didn't, because if they do then what are they going to talk about when they unveil the nexus edition in the coming weeks. They also have sad this phone will be available during December so why announce it now.
This is HTC's way of hinting they will be releasing a nexus phone. It looks best in black because then the finish of it is not shiny. Another thing I have noticed is the charger port has a flap that obviously points to it being water proof. They have only spoken about the display ppi they haven't spoken about the screen tech. This will only be spoken about when the google nexus phones are unveiled.
This is certainly the best nexus phone coming out easily beating the LG nexus. The only thing I want from this now is a good battery life which I think will be the same as the one x U.S variant, but slightly better since it will have android 4.2 running on it

But I'm pretty happy with my g2. Let us face it - whatever phone you buy - you will make 1st impression. After few days you will develop more impressions: negative and positive(yes..every product (stuff..) has : "I like this, I don't like that, people react different to what they see, feel, hear etc..).
This phone will be a mistake if it comes with SD801, it demands SD805 to couple with 2K screen.
The top competition is also on SD801, but they will be rendering much less pixels on FHD screens, so definitely, games will be much more slugish on G3.
It will be FHD 2,073,600 pixels VS QHD 3,686,400 pixels, something around 75% more pixels.
I wish they kept the bottom bezel clear glass as the G2.

I know these aren't the official photos as most mentioned it's just a leak renders but if it happens to be what we see here when they announce it on the 27th of this month I will make my first jump to LG.

I love it... Very nice. I do think this is how it will look because it matches every single leak I have seen, just a lot clearer photo
I hope it turns out exactly as pictured! Its gorgeous! Even thought rumors says it will have a SD801...I'm hoping for the SD805 for future proofing as well as directly competing to the rumored S5 prime. Regardless...the black/Gray G3 will be mine when it releases!

Dont have my g2 long enough to switch.. Looks really great.. German websites as giga.de or androidpit are excepting an sd805. I think it will be so. An 801 is imo not enough for a 2014 flagship

Looks amazing...
I just bought G2 recently and that's been a blast but heck this G3 takes it to another level...
I want and I want it now! Black or gold plz.
It will fail if it will be sd801 + 2k display... that doesnt make any sense :\ Anyway design is beautiful
This phone will come with S805
Phonearena said S801 is for G3 prototype.
And qualcomm said S805 phone will come at may

if snapdragon 600 can handle FHD, 801 can handle QHD without breaking a sweat. For me a minor frame rate drop wouldn't matter cause I yawn @ gaming.

It looks great in my opinion, I like they keep the volume and power buttons in the back, I have the G2 and I'm very used to that now.
