Hi,
Here is my first try for building an insecure kernel without su su or any other modifications.
6.0.F.0.72 https://hotfile.com/dl/162182111/93e199a/LT28i_6.0.F.0.72_Boot.elf.html
6.0.F.0.111 https://hotfile.com/dl/162367993/a96688d/LT28i_6.0.F.0.111_Boot_Inecure.elf.html
Thanks to Androxyde for helping me build this kernel.
Xperia ION rooting pack: https://hotfile.com/dl/162186202/75d3ffd/Xperia_Ion_Rooting.zip.html
Here is a batch file for adding su and busybox into the rom.
[Procedure for rooting]
1. Unlock the bootloader.
2. Flash your Xperia ION LT28i with the insecure kernel.
3. Boot the phone and connect with debugging on.
4. Extract the Xperia ION rooting pack and run the batch file.
5. Install the latest version of superuser and busybox from google play.
Hey yuunanase, Thanks a bunch for your work. Out for the holiday but will help you guys test soon as I return. SAWEEET!!! earbrain
Anyone get to try this on LT28at yet to see if it works? I am assuming it would since we can flash LT28i firmware onto our phones. The only question would be if it works with LTE or not.

Well since you need an unlocked bootloader it won't work on the lt28at since we can't unlock the bootloaders yet.
So next step is bootloader then...before root

yuunanase have you tried making a pre-rooted system image that you can flash with an unlocked bootloader? Would be nice to have that without having to mess with any kernel changes.
I am still learning how to make a prerooted system.img. Do you have any idea how to build one?

This was the very basic guide I followed for the Xperia S but when trying for the ion and for ICS on the Xperia S it gets errors on the mount command:
Installed debian/gnome, updated and downloaded pyton and other packages
downloaded ext4 utilites:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081239
created sin2img.py:
https://github.com/defer/semc-xperia-tools/blob/master/sin2img.py
created system.sin with flashtool
[email protected]:/home/user# cd android
[email protected]:/home/user/android# python ./sin2img.py system.sin system.img
[email protected]:/home/user/android# mkdir system; mount -t ext4 -o loop system.img system
download Superuser.apk and su from http://androidsu.com/superuser/
[email protected]:/home/user/android# cp Superuser.apk system/app/
[email protected]:/home/user/android# cp su system/bin/
[email protected]:/home/user/android# chmod 644 system/app/Superuser.apk
[email protected]:/home/user/android# chmod 06755 system/bin/su

Nothing here for either. Are you pressing the up volume + lock button by accident? That causes a force restart/reboot if you are.

What shenanigans would you be referring to? The bootloader is locked down, but this is still a root method that works. I understand your frustration, but it isn't my fault or XDA's fault that the bootloader was locked down so please try to direct your anger at the people you're actually mad at (AT&T/Sony).
Just because no one can follow "step 1" doesn't mean this isn't a legitimate root method, I really don't see the point or validity of your comment here. In fact, wouldn't it being up on the XDA Portal bring this phone to the attention of potential developers? Well, not anymore. I know I wouldn't want to develop on a phone that gets trolled when it makes the front page :/

Though I think a better title to the post should have been just Sony Xperia ion not AT&T
Its always been this way for users of bootloader locked devices. The fact that a root method exists for unlocked bootloaders is great. Just means we have to figure out how to unlock the BL for those devices that are locked.
Once we can figure out what Sony has done with the new system.sin files we might actually be able to get a simple prerooted image. Again for unlocked BL.
As far how we can go about unlocking the AT&T BL....that I have no clue. Don't think there is a testpoint method for these like there was for the Xpedia Play.

I really wasn't trying to be a troll. I just thought your article was misleading and I was trying to call attention to that. I'm not mad and I fully expect the device to be rooted soon. I flashed the international firmware so I no longer have all that AT&T bloat so I'm happy. I really only use root to back up all my apps anyway. Hopefully there will be kernel development in the future but that is just an added bonus really.
As for developers, my thought was that the article might deter the developers that we desperately need. I figured if they thought that we already had root then they would spend their time elsewhere. But what do I know about devs?
My original intent was only to bring to light to those in the community that most AT&T devices do not have root. I believe in the XDA community, and I'm sure we'll have one soon.
Thanks for all you do for XDA PoorCollegeGuy. Sometimes we should read and give the writer the benefit of the doubt.

I was thinking about that, the AT&T/no AT&T thing in the title, but I ended up going with what it's called in the forums. Top left corner it says "AT&T". It's a little confusing because if I don't include things like that, people often get mad at me. the AT&T Galaxy Note users hated it before I started differentiating their development from the International development so I got into the habit of just putting exactly what it is entitled on the forums.

Forgive me for my misunderstanding as I'm sure you can guess how hard it is to guess at a person's tone of voice when reading a statement as opposed to hearing it. I have taken no offense and I hope you didn't either.
Dev support is hard to gauge or predict. Some devs love the challenge, even if they don't own the device. Others would rather stick to home base and wouldn't care who needed the help. Frankly, based on my experience writing about Sony Xperia devices, I thought pretty much everything you guys had was interchangeable. I've seen literally hundreds of "this works on all xperia phone" mods n such. If I were you guys, I'd hit up the well known Sony Xperia hackers to see if they can help. Or, if you can talk em into it, the guys who do the Juopunubear S-Off mod are brilliant with bootloaders. That's what I'd do...a friendly suggestion from your neighborhood spy (I mean writer).
In any case, when/if the bootloader gets unlocked, better believe it's going up on the portal i'll be keeping an eye out for you guys.
Actually I haven't rooted it yet. Thats why I was asking. Is everything functional.

you should include something in the article saying that it doesn't apply to the at&t version, it's gonna mislead ppl which will then cause a wave of ppl posting everywhere complaining about it not working on their at&t ion because we all know that the vast majority of users don't tend to read the threads beforehand

It is that easy. It's just that getting R/W access to /system may or may not be trivial. I haven't tried yet, I'm still getting used to this ginormous screen in my pocket....It is a little disorienting, and I'm coming from an E3D lol.
I'm from HTC so I don't have any familiarity with how this works...
does the "update.zip" (based on model number or other identifier) method work for anything? Since the bootloader isn't "locked" (crypto-signed) does that mean that update.zip's (or their equivalent) signature's aren't crypto-signed...or signed at all?
If the security is that lax, well, it is a matter of minutes until any one of us walks right into root....by accident

If this is not the right thread to ask this in, I apologize as I am not trying to hijack this thread. That being said, I am new to Android having only had my Samsung View 4g since its release and my new Epic Touch since last night. I have read several news articles that have indicated that a rooted device somehow is less secure then a stock device and I am wondering if this is true and if there is a way to have Root access and still remain secure or if this is just another thing the non-tech media are over hyping?

They are over-hyping it, you have nothing to fear unless you actually are looking for an app to mess up your phone. Root access has an app called superuser which lets you control which apps can use root access to the system or not. Don't worry, its safe!
update.zips
update zips are signed updates from like samsung, we either can apply zips in CWM, which has been pushed to epic either via ADB originally or via ODIN and flashing a TAR to a partition Odin makes the world go around and around for noncrippled samsungs (im pointing at the replenish my mom has)

P.S. Fasboot never bricked my phone and I have used it lot of times!
from what ive heard you cant root .62, .69 firmware or above, you need to downgrade or flash doomkernel which is prerooted
there is another method which involves flashing rootxperia.zip from cwm by booting binary's recovery, but i don't know it that will work
Even though I flashed my phone from instruction, I am new to the lock bootloader idea. Is it possible to use fastboot while the bootloader is locked?

You don't need Fastboot to use the script I posted and and your bootloader doesn't have to be unlocked.
Try the DooMLord Easy Rooting toolkit....google it...or search here in the forums....
Make sure you're not on the latest .62 or higher firmware, download doomlords zergrush one-click, follow the instructions in the thread for it. Simple.
Here, since you probably didn't search the forums properly first -_- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
And for crying out loud you DO NOT need fastboot to root, or flash (stock) roms with flashtool!!
I'm getting really annoyed with ignorant people who spread false information. If you don't know what you're talking about, if you're new to xda and can barely do things yourself, don't try to give people advice!
I can't even count how many threads where we had to clear up false info about rooting, fastboot, flashing etc. because some new guy thought he was an expert and gave incorrect info to other new members.
Why do I care so much, and why bother ranting you may ask? It's simple, really. False information leads to mistakes that can leave a poor, unsuspecting newbie with a nice brick instead of a working phone.
Make sense? I should hope so. And for the love of God read the rules before you post! They clearly state to SEARCH the forums before posting, yet it seems nobody does. I'm pretty sure the forum tells you to read them when you sign up, and agree to the terms of use..

YOu can use flashtool, doesn't mean you will do some hardcore flashing.
The flashtool has the option to apply the zergrush method to root and is very easy to use. You can even install a more trustable busybox (1.19) for other rootie candies. (Even tought I update to 1.19.4)
But first thing I made when I bought is to unlock the bootloader, maybe don't work for you, but will NOT destroy your phone in case of failure.
Hello, and sorry for bugging everyone, but I have somewhat of a problem. I'll just start from the beggining.
First of all I own a SGS II, so I'm used to flashing roms and kernels custom stuff and all...on that. My girlfriend is the one who owns a Xperia Arc S (LT18a, US version if it's relevant or not). And for the live of me, I can't summon the courage to flash it, the process being somewhat different than the flashing of a S2. That's just idiot proof in my opinion, can't go wrong. I'm seeing all over the place guides and stuff for flashing a Xperia Arc S, and don't really know wich one is good/bad etc. So...the actual questions :
1. Where can I find the stock firmwares for Xperia Arc S ? I was hopping on a website something like sammobile for samsung, where I can find every release etc.
2. She now has 2.3.4 (I think not 100% sure) build 4.0.2.A.0.62 and from what I heard that cannot be rooted, or it involved something like unlocking the bootloader or something like that, safe to say that kinda freaked me out a bit.
3. I'm guessing that this build 62 is like on my samsung, where different stock rom's are differentiated by letters (eg. XXLPG, XWLPQ etc) so, someone please confirm that.
4. Is there any noticeable difference between these gingebread builds, cause if build 62 can't be rooted, I'll downgrade to previous build that can be more easily rooted.
5. I really need a idiot proof guide to flashing this thing. She has no warranty on it and I really don't want to mess it up
6. And last (finally, I know ) some links for safe versions of flashtool (equivalent of odin from what I understand) and firmwares, stuff I need to root it etc.
I apologise for such a long post but this stuff is pretty overwhelming for me. Also I apologise for spelling errors (english is not my first language)
Wow, the things we do for love...
OK, here's a quick run-down of how it works.
Firstly the bootloader thing: -
The bootloader is where the "kernel" sits. If you unlock the bootloader then you can pretty much put anything on the phone.
You can flash a custom kernel, and from there on you can use ClockworkMod recovery the same way you do on your Samsung.
(
custom kernels have ClockworkMod recovery built into them since the XPERIA doesn't have a "/recovery" partition for the standard ClockworkMod recovery.
If that didn't make sense then here's a translation "There's no special space for CWM recovery on Sony phones! So custom kernels have CWM recovery built in for easy access."
When one of these kernels starts up the phone there's a point where the hardware buttons light up, and the LED flashes purple. If you press "volume down" at this point then the kernel starts up ClockworkMod recovery instead of booting the phone.
Most roms come with their own kernel that you can use like this. The XPERIA is different to the SGS phone because you can't flash a kernel from the phone itself. You need an unlocked bootloader and fastboot to flash a kernel.
)
So unlocking the bootloader is a good idea, but only after you've made a backup of all your stuff off the memory card.
Here's a really good thread that brings together all sorts of pieces of information that you might need to root the phone - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653188
OK, so that's the unlock thing, and the kernel thing. Once the kernel has CWM recovery built in you can pretty much flash any rom you feel like flashing. There are already some JellyBean roms out that are fast and usable if you're prepared to read up on them and experiment a bit.
Next thing is the "BaseBand". This is the driver for the "cell phone radio". The part of the hardware that's actually responsible for behaving like a phone
Here's a thread where you can get all of the different base-band versions: - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688049
Personally I know that base-bands 72 and 77 both work perfectly. Since they are the 2 newest versions you can choose which-ever one you want. The newer basebands give much better signal strength on the phone, and the call quality is really good.
Good luck with the experimenting - hope you enjoy.

Not really, from what I hear ICS dumbs down the phone sort of speak. Now I really can't say, but I would test it out a bit, as long as I learn how to go back to GB.
Another thing that I'm a bit concerned is that all the stuff I find are for LT18i and my gf's phone is a american model LT18a. Will this be a problem ? Or that's just to differentiate the hardware stuff in them ? I hope flashing a LT18i firmware doesn't screw anything up

Yep, the differentiating factor is the hardware. the lt18i and lt18a roms are the same as far as I know. ICS does tend to be more resource heavy especially on the arcs but downgrading back to GB is basically the same method as flashing the ICS, just with another rom.
And also, in response to your first post, you can downgrade to the rootable build of GB, root that, and then flash the build 62 kernel back onto your phone so it's rooted and of the desired build
There's a lot of flashing guides on youtube regarding the arc s. I did a quick search and this one seemed pretty accurate and straight to the point.
Ok I pretty much understood the whole shabang, my last question is about the bootloader, if I unlock it once that's it ? I can flash whatever I want and not need to reunclock it...sort of speak. I read that for warranty reasons it can be relocked but that's not the case for me. Also for flashing a stock rom is it necessary to unlock the bootloader or that's just for rooting ?
Oh and almost forgot...if I understood right...I can downgrade...root...then upgrade to 62 and it will still be rooted ? On my samsung if it'a rooted and I flash abother stock rom...bye bye root, so pretty weird for me. Thank you again, I can't stress enough how helpfull you guys were.

unlocking the bootloader allows a whole lot more things to be done with the arc, but does make some apps defunct such as track id and music facebook like (which many can do without). flashing and/or rooting a stock rom doesn't need an unlocked bootloader because it's stock and yep, you can downgrade/upgrade, root, and then go back to what build you want by flashing a kernel only

That only applies if you use the official method to unlock, use SETool and you'll retain DRM.

Thanks for the clarification. I never knew much about bootloaders and all that

If you could help me out with a SETool link and a basic set of instructions that would be awsome
LE: From what I've seen there are 2 versions of SETool and one's free the other is not. Can the free version be used to unlock the bootloader or do I have to get the full version ? Or even simpler, is there anyway to unlock it (LT18a) free and without losing DRM ?

So basically from what I read there, no way for free unlock and retain DRM.

Follow the instructions up to the point just before patching and tell me what it says please?
if you unlock the bootloader NEVER UPDATE OVER THE AIR this will brick the phone.
The're 2 ways to unlock bootloader
1 via Sony web site but this only works for non branded phones,
2 is to pay if you use a service with setools this will unlock bootloader and make phone SIM free.
Xda member jinx13 offers this service contract him for more info.

If SETool can unlock any handset I'm not sure why the S1Tool wouldn't, has anyone confirmed in the thread it doesn't work for the Arc S?

Since my bootloader was opened the setools has been upgraded to setools2 which now covers more phones but not sure which.

I'm sorry but what are you refering to ? The process that involves opening the backcover under the battery ?
Some additional info, it's not carrier branded, not sim locked...and using the service code in the dialer says bootloader unlockable : yes

Despite my strong belief that people who are interested in rooting should buy devices with unlocked bootloaders instead of expecting the magical hackers in the sky to give out free exploits (which are in short supply), I'm once again continuing to encourage bad behavior by publishing another root exploit:
http://vulnfactory.org/public/motofail2go_windows.zip
Instructions:
1. Download and extract the entire zip file.
2. Ensure your device is connected via USB and that you have installed the latest ADB drivers from Motorola.
3. Double-click "run.bat" and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. The exploit will ask you to press a button combination at one point.
If the exploit prints an error saying something like "run-as: Package 'com.motorola.bug2go' is unknown", then unfortunately you will have to wipe your data and cache partitions and try again.
This exploit should work on the Razr M, Atrix HD, Photon Q, Razr i (you might need to replace some of the binaries with x86 versions?), and the upcoming Razr HD.

guess i dont need to tweet the link at ya then
Glad to see he came out of retirement. Thanks to all of y'all, especially Dan!
This is great! I went with the Nexus over this and got my wife the M but glad to see I can "fix" anything down the road should problems arise that can't be mitigated without root access. I knew it wouldn't be long even though people had doubts about it.

Everyone who uses this exploit should be sending djrbliss a few bucks.
It's the least we can do as users to support his consistently excellent and unique contribution to our community.
There is nobody else in the same league doing this kind of work for us.
You can't buy it for any amount of money...
Anyone tried this with the leak?

As someone who didn't have a choice of locked/unlocked bootloader (company device, can't provide own equipment), I can't thank you enough. Once I get this through (can do it now) and can get home to access my paypal (currently on a share computer) I will definitely donate! I don't have a terrible need for root anymore with the way my Atrix HD performs, but things like ad-blocker, etc. are still very handy.
Thank you for this!!
Somebody asked if this works on the leak. I assume the leak refers to the jelly bean update? Because I just updated to jb last night. Regardless, this is the best news since i heard about this phone's release. Donation going to paypal when my paycheck comes. Thank you very much.

I'm on a Mac, so I tried running all the commands in the .bat file manually. Got no errors, and Superuser.apk installed properly, but when I try root checker or any other root apps, I got a message saying the device wasn't rooted. Tried clearing data/cache and doing it again, but still no dice. Is there anything I should try manually? Don't have access to a PC right now.
Executed with no errors. Window claimed success. Yet no superuser or root after reboot??

I replaced su and Superuser.apk in the zip with the same files from the root package on aosp.us. It worked then.
Thanks so much
As someone who has just come over from my Samsung Fascinate and the great developer community there i want to thank you for getting this phone root !! But since i'm new to Moto and want to get root i just want to be sure there are no programs i need to install other than the instructions in the OP. On the Fascinate i had to open Odin before flashing but i can just install the ADB drivers x64,have phone turned off, and run the bat file and that is it ? thanks in advance. I did some searching and everything i read always says device specific so i just wanted to be clear.
Thanks,
Tom
Successful rooted and got superuser in. However, any root app said that my m isn't rooted. Such as Overclock app.

This is awesome news. I'm glad to see that he just couldn't resist doing his magic.
When bootstrap and what not is out, along with a JB ROM I'll be on this!! Debloated, project butter, slightly themed somehow to devs liking and I'm in bidness

i appologize if this has already been posted or something, i could not find it so i thought i would ask? Thanks for any replies.

Next time check this thread first. This has been discussed in the last couple of pages and probably more. If the file isn't signed by Samsung it will not flash. It shouldn't brick it, it will just fail to flash. Been there and done that... I probably tried all the root methods available for kitkat 4.4.4 and none work for the retail version.

Root for Lollipop is MUCH more difficult, basically you need to find a way to get a custom kernel (and thus unlocked bootloader) just to get root in L. I wouldn't get my hopes up, at this point as a Verizon Note 4 owner I've given up all hope and just enjoy my phone, its still awesome.
People just repeat nonsense non stop, saying rooting lollipop is much more difficult without a LP image for the device is nothing but nonsensical. All rooting any device/os is the ability to find an exploit on the device. It has much less to do with what android. THE ONLY THING IT HAS TO DO WITH: Is finding an exploit in a stock system to hijack system permissions so u can then make changes to give you admin (ROOT) permission all the time. With an unlocked BL your are able to load your own software pre OS so you are not dependant on finding an exploit in order to get root in OS your options are much greater. And that's it, anything else is pure speculation, so us not having LP on our device you can not claim it will be easier or harder, an exploit is an exploit that's in. So keep the absurd comments coming. Don't bother replying to me because no reason for me to come back here to find more nonsense.
