Problem with GPS - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I have problem with GPS on my Wildfire. What's the problem ? The GPS doesn't work. I have flashed the radio but it's still doesn't work. Can you help me to solve this. My ROM is CyanogenMod 7.
I had similiar situation a few months ago, and I flashed Radio and it worked.
Please help me

Hi there
When activating GPS on your Wildfire on CM7 it doesnt show up in the status bar until you open an app like Google Maps to get your location.
You may not have a problem with your GPS but just cannot seem to find it i had the problem with mine when ifirst rooted.
To test if it is working download GPS Test from the Play store and when you open the app and turn GPS on the symbol for GPS should appear!
Hope i can help

Depends upon which version of CM7 you flashed. Some radio's work with a particular kernel and some don't.
Flash the correct radio it will work.

Or just try to flash another kernel
For me it works fine with latest radio and nFinity kernel on CM7.2

Try to flash another kernel. Sometimes kernels are involved in malfunction of services like GPS or WiFi. If that doesn't work, reflash the radio but make sure that you don't have a custom mtd partition. If you do, revert the mtd size back to stock and then reflash the radio. I had the same problem with you and tried to reflash the radio but it didn't work because i had custom mtd partitioning.

I had the same problem
Someone suggested me the AGPS patch.. it worked for me..
In fact its a charm..

Just as a hint: you can also find all the Wildfire stuff in The complete Wildfire index (partly with short descriptions)
You could also flash a new/different radio with Clockworkmod but you'd need Clockworkmod 2.5.x for that, newer versions won't do.
I also knew of other people who flashed the "older" radio and got it to work. The aGPS patch is just a speed improvement - if your gps.conf isn't corrupted accidentially it won't help if GPS doesn't work at all

Rather than trying to install any CWM flashable GPS fix.zip, go to the Play store and install FasterGPS:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ult#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm9yZy5mYXN0ZXJncHMiXQ..
It is working great for me on my CM 7 install on Wildfire S. I get 9-10 locks in 10-15 seconds.
Good Luck!

If his GPS doesn't work at all I doubt this will help.
Just for clarification: radios aren't just flashable GPS fixes they're the lowest system layers on your phone and responsible for more than just GPS.
I get 9-10 locks in 10-15 seconds.

for improving GPS lock speed you don't need an app. I just replaced my gps.conf with the same result (link in my sig)

If "GPS doesn't work at all" means that it doesn't lock successfully, then it is the same state that I was experiencing with CM 7. FasterGPS worked for me that is why I suggested it. No harm in giving it a try anyways.
Yes I know, FasterGPS doesn't do anything else rather than replacing the default gps.conf. The app isn't such a feature-rich app rather it just simply allows tweaking some gps.conf parameters. And it backups your original gps.conf in case you want to un-install it.

of course. Since this was his first and only post and he didn't answer to one of the responses for about a month I guess we won't find out what exactly "don't work" means
Regarding FasterGPS: one of the reasons I rooted my phone has been to gain more RAM, space and control. Anytime I have an easier way to adjust settings than to use an app I'll try to do so as this saves space - but this is just my personal opinion and I've also used apps to adjust only one tiny setting in the phone - luckily if we own a rooted device we can decide ourselves.

[FIX] GPS Fix for Froyo firmwares based on JM9's Drivers

I heared a lot of opinions saying that the GPS on eclair JM9 is very good, near perfect. As you know, we can't say that on JPO, WJPA and all froyo versions.
So, It's just seems obvious to me to ask - why Samsung went back with the GPS performance?
And is it possible to create a fix for the GPS for Froyo, based on the firmware from JM9' so the performance of the GPS on Froyo will significantly improve?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have asked from PilotX to create this kind of fix for me. Thanks to him (post#9) for creating a flashable zip via ClockworkMod recovery with JM9's GPS files inside.
http://www.multiupload.com/C90PAO39WX
***Using this is at your own risk but in no way will you generate the same result as some did. Although people have been reporting on better GPS after applying this "fix", it's still your own decision to make. A backup is recommended, as allways.***
Tutorial
Download the file and put it in your sdcard.
Go to ClockworkMod recovery, choose "Install from sdcard" and browse to that zip file, then flash it.
After that, download an application called "SGS Tools" from the market.
Run SGS Tools. Browse to Secret Codes > GPS Test and Settings > Delete GPS data.
Then try out your GPS, don't panic, as the first fix takes a bit.
opinions doesnt mean much unless they are backed up with some real data. you can browse the forum and find a lot of opinions about different gps fixes along the way.
few months have passed since first signs of trouble with gps, more then enough to find 100% fix.
My GPS Seems good enough when driving around with JPA...
Please change the thread title, you making it sound like you have a GPS fix for Froyo. When you are really just asking questions and inquiring.

That's why I have used the question mark icon. Still, I will change it.
mike, As many people here, I inquire the GPS subject for a long time. The information about JM9 is based not only on XDA users, but on people that I trust, Who have tried many firmwares and tested the GPS tens of hours. I would have tried it myself, but It will be a big problem for me to go back to eclair.
Is it even possible to create such a fix for Froyo? (based on eclair)
Yep, based on my experience no other ROM has matched Eclair JM8, when it comes to Google Navigation accuracy. I'm on JPO and the voice directions go hay-wire "turn left in 30 yards" nope, wait, "carry on straight and cross the junction" and it constantly puts me on the opposite traffic flow. But I wouldn't flash back to JM8 just cos of reliable satnav since I'd miss so much of the Froyo goodness
GPS navigation really depends on a lot of factors incuding hardware revision and physical location ( and probably luck )
I have 2 SGS's here and side by side the other one locks to 7 sats and its very accurate on a drive basis while the other one barely locks to 4 and takes over 5mins to even find 1.. both have the same firmware installed.

As pilotx said, he made the JM9 fix for me. I can also confirm the GPS have vastly improved on my device! Althogh It's not perfect, It's the best GPS I have seen on my device. Try installing it on FROYO.
Don't forget to clean the GPS data after installation! be patient, first time fix may take some time.

Can you guys be more acurate?
Should I rename the zip to update.zip then install the update files from recovery mode?
How to to clean gps data after the update?
A small tutorial is needed...
Thanks!

I recognize that gps is better without sensory support on jpo
can some budy make short tut about the instaltion ?
I'm sorry, thought it was obvious :
1. install the file using clockworkmod, no need to rename.
2. clear the GPS data (using a program called "SGS tools", you can find it on market. enter :
secret codes--->GPS test and settings--->delete GPS data.
again, be patient for first time fix!
share your results, me and pilotx had big improvement.
What kind of improvement do you see? Faster GPS lock or better accuracy?

[Q] a different GPS problem

Ok, so I've searched on this and haven't been able to find anyone with the same problem. This is so annoying!
Phone specs:
HTC Evo, rooted
Cyanogen 7.0.3.1
PRL 01115
not sure what else you might need to diagnose this.
Around the time that Sprint released their stock gingerbread rom for the Evo, my GPS went on the fritz. All of a sudden, google maps would only get a fix maybe once every few minutes. Useless for navigation! Sometimes the GPS icon wouldn't even flash, like it wasn't even trying to get a fix, meanwhile, Maps is "waiting for location."
I tried the usual "fix" that you hear about, by flashing back to a sense rom and typing ##gpsclrx##, and then the MSL number when prompted. No success.
I finally figured out that if I go into recovery and clear the dalvik cache, and then run GPS Status after it reboots, the gps works again, but a few days later, I have to do that all over again.
Any idea what's causing this or how to fix it?
I get similar problems. I just started using Cyanogen when Sprint came out with their first Gingerbread update and broke everything. I love Cyanogen, and I have managed to get everything working except for the GPS.
A lot of times it takes a long time to turn on when I start up google maps, and then it will get a fix, and then after a minute it will loose the fix and won't be able to get gps lock again. I tried flashing back to a stock rom and doing the ##gpsclrx# thing, but it just clears the call screen and never even asks for a MSL number, so I don't know if that works or not. I love Cyanogen, but don't know if I can live without the GPS working.
Has anybody else figured anything out? Does anyone know if this is a know problem that is being worked on or not?
I get no fix on gps and no voice
a question for the OP since you dont make any mention of it.
Have you tried flashing the Galandy fix for GPS? Using the Vision GPS driver makes a world of difference.
the first one, at the top of the list.
found here in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132412&highlight=gps+fix
use the flashable zip that corresponds to your recovery type. i've used the Fix_2 on several devices with CWM recovery.
I was able to solve it using the drivers here:

Not sure if this is the same thing as what drdrewdown posted... sounds like it is.

Bumping this thread with a question: Will the Vision GPS driver (Galandy) work on a near-stock Sense ROM (GB)?
I'm running Jiminy, which is mostly a debloated stock ROM with a few changes made for ease of use on the Cricket network.
Currently my GPS is doing what the OP of this thread is describing- my current workaround is to do the following every single time I want to use nav:
1) Open GPS Status. Clear AGPS data. Download new AGPS data.
2) Open GPSFix. Hit "Start Fix", then hit the Map button.
3) Do my Navigation. It works fairly well after that.
This is an annoying procedure!!! I want to load the Vision driver but don't know if it will screw something up- it seems like most of the people running it are on CM7 or some other AOSP custom ROM.
Will it work with my setup?

In theory, they should work fine on Sense roms as well. However if your stock Sense GPS drivers are not working then the Vision drivers might not work either, but it doesn't hurt to try. Just backup your gps.supersonic.so file in /system/lib/hw/ folder before flashing the driver.
I posted new drivers HERE today btw

Oddly enough, my phone does not have that file. And installing it seems to do nothing
The closest thing I have is /system/lib/libgps.so
Being the daring sort, I renamed that file and replaced it with the a renamed copy of the Vision gps.supersonic.so; my phone did not like that at all- no boot, had to reflash

well, it worked great for a while, but now it's back to only working when it wants to (which is never when I need it)
Has anybody ever heard of undervolting breaking GPS? I ask because that's the only thing I've done aside from rooting/installing the ROM.

It works for me @ Cyanogen 9 on my Nexus S !

And another radio problem...

Hey guys,
I read quite a lot of posts about cm7.2.0 RC 1, the buzz and GPS troubles.
Oh yeah - the surprise: also my GPS doesn't work anymore. Last cyanogenmod version i used: 7.1 stable.
So i reflashed the radio. Source:
HTML:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Wildfire:_Support_Downloads
First i tried 3.35.20.10 then 3.35.19.25 because the first one(latest!?) didn't worked, second neither.
What else can I do?
cYa
What didn´t worked?
The install of the radio with an error in cwm or the gps in your phone when using an app after the re flashing the radio?
If it is the first one, use cwm 2.5.0.7 i belief (but i think u already done that)
If it is the second one, turn gps on or otherwise i dont know. Hope someone els can help u then.
Hazou
the gps itself...
but on the otherside, maybe both
I checked if the flashing of the latest version worked(cm settings), turned it on, but the gps didn't worked. then I flashed a older (one-step) version. actually don't know if it's older. it was the second of the list(link above).
but now the cm setting is telling me I have the same radio installed as I had before flashing anything?!
where can I find this cwm version?
-thanks for your answer!!
Try flashing a new radio by fastboot method.Flashing a new radio via CWM never worked for me,even with CWM v2.5.0.7.I flashed 3.35.19.25 and my GPS works perfectly.

[Q] No data after flashing new ROMs

So I've been into flashing ROMs for a week now and whenever I am installing a AOKP based ROM I have troubles with nework and data. I have to manually look and register on a network after ticking the "2g only option" and I have to do this after every reboot.
Also I manually enter the APN settings and I am not able to save it on any on the AOKP based ROMs so far (Tripdroid, ICJ, CM10 etc.)
I don't know whats wrong. Am I missing something? I also tried getRIL after flashing a new ROM and installing a new RIL but nothing seems to wor.
Any help?
Edit: I am not having such problems with SENSE based ROMs like ARHD Viper etc. And I am on T-Mobile USA

Just tried it. Still not working. Can't save APN settings as before and again if I reboot i have to manually look for mobile network.
Hmm then i am very sorry , I can't give you the answer as my knowledge is not going that far .....
I think you should post this in the thread of the rom because it's rom based.
I have numerous times but no one replies!
Thats pretty f**ked up I can't think of anything anymore, sorry mate !
No worries, I'm here!
Okay, let's begin from a clean table. Wipe everything you can: first cache and dalvik, and finally tap "wipe/factory reset"
When you install ROM, try another nightly than on previous attempts. It might be a bad download or an issue with that particular build.
Next the boot.img. First try the pure modded boot.img, I've attached it once again. Then you could try repacking it with the stock boot (in the rom.zip) here. Wipe cache once again. Now if you did everything correctly, the APN settings should persist.
Then some questions before you do anything with the phone:
Can you see PIN-code query?
Does WiFi work?
Can you make calls?
Signal meter is pure grey with no bars visible?
Then set up your APN like you did before and that should be that. Reboot to see if the network is found, and if the settings persist.
If, however, that doesn't do the trick, use getRIL.
Some people reported that they get no signal on the recommended RIL, so I suggest you to try out every RIL in the list that is even remotely close to the recommended. Reboot between different RIL's.
Also some people reported that the latest getril does not work. Disable playstore automatic updates, remove getril and the install versionv0.9.4b.
Hope this helps!
See that's why you are needed in here !

Sorry, I didn't quite catch that phrase. And about backing up stock and then restoring in a custom ROM... only one way to find out.

I recently flashed to cyanogenmod 4.4.2 now my GPS is totally inaccurate. Anyone got any ideas what went wrong?

I've had the same problem when flashing to cm11. The only way I could get it to work properly was to flash back to my stock backup and get a gps lock, then reflash cm11 again and try locking with gps. People recommend running an app called GPS status too, it shows the number of satellites available and the number of satellite connections.

Thank you I'll give it try. I'll have to find the stock ROM for my phone. I didn't back it up like a newb
I have been reading that the GPS issues are hardware related and it can be due to the lack of contact on the connector which is causing this issue. Most people were able to fix it by opening up the phone and putting some electrical tape to make a nice contact on the connectors.

I don't think it's primarily hardware related when most of us didn't have issues before 4.4.2.
I've tried numerous roms for the Sprint LG G2 that did not have GPS, but I think I've found a sort-of solution to it... I basically stole the gps ".so" files from the only rom that I know had working GPS... Paranoid Android. This was over a month ago however, and I've been reusing the same files over CM and Mahdi ever since, so I'm not sure if their updates could have broken GPS, but if that's the case I can share the files that I've been using with CM. Not sure how to make it into a flashable zip however, so they have to be replaced manually.

Can you share these files? Would they work on a stock based ROM?

I don't mind sharing them, but not sure if they work on a stock based ROM as I haven't tried it. All the ROM's I've been testing have been AOSP-based... CM/PA/Mahdi/Omni/PAC/etc. I don't claim to know or understand how or why it works... but if it works for you too, great! If not, please don't blame me if it causes a brick or something.
Additionally, I don't know how to make this flashable... my method has been to extract the files, then reboot into Phil's CW Recovery and manually copy the files over with the Aroma File Manager. I included a GPS.conf file that I've modified to improve gps for my region, you may wish to exclude it.
[Edit] If this "does" work, be sure to thank the Paranoid Android team for whatever voodoo they did to make GPS work on their ROM.
