Not sure if there is already a thread like this but I just found out something that I found was pretty freaking awesome!
Was listening to some B.o.B when I tried clicking the volume buttons on my earphones. ( Monster/Nokia purity) then boom the buttons act as a previous and next. For me the volume down is next and obviously the volume up is the previous
And just found out that holding the middle button activates the voice search

I have headphones with a single button on them. Long pressing opens up voice search, single clicking while listening to music acts as a play/pause actions, double clicking moves to the next track and I hope triple clicking moves to the previous track.
My Etymotic buds don't work.
The play/next track button just pauses, and volume buttons do nothing.

Triple click does not go to previous track. Single pauses/plays.

I have a pair of Sony Wired with music and volume control. They seemed to work better on GB when using my LG G2x, but the ICS on the Nexus only registered the 1 main button (Previous, Skip, volume up and Volume Down did nothing). On the LG G2x, everything worked great except Volume which I read was a Apple exclusive.
I also have a A2DP BlueAnt Handsfree unit for calls, but has 2 Volume buttons and a main button. I'm curious to see how it handles it when playing music.
I'll give them a shot again tonight to see how JB handles it.

Media button router gave me access back to my third party bluetooth voice dialer on Jellybean. However to access google voice commands now I have to initiative them by touch instead of the center bluetooth button. After they are initiated the google voice commands work as they should on bluetooth.
Only thing left is to get the center BT button to distinguish between a long and short press so it can initiative either my 3rd party voice dialer or google voice commands. There is another app I have in mind to test for that. Here is link for media button router.

No it didn't work for me. Only pause/play and long press for voice worked.
Apple has patents on their implementation of 3 button controls. So any "Made for iPod/iPhone" headphones DON'T work on android. I doubt JB would change that. The only thing Google can do legal-wise is to natively implement double-press and triple-press for the main control button.
3 button headset made specifically for android are supposed to exist (Headset Droid supports them) but I haven't found any yet.

I recently started using my phone as the music player in my car through my car's stereo Aux port. This is great because it allows me to listen to my Spotify playlists in the car. However, one thing I find annoying about this new setup is that in order to skip tracks I have to unlock the phone and use the screen. While driving this can prove difficult/dangerous.
I'm looking to see if anyone knows a way that I can skip tracks without unlocking the screen, possibly by using the volume buttons.
Right now the only solution I can think of is just to have the display never go to sleep so I can just tap the screen to change a track. The obvious issue with this is that my battery will drain extremely fast. So I'd like to avoid this if possible.
We'll have this with CM7, until then I'm not sure there is a solution. Best thing I have found it using my bluetooth controls (Sony Headset).
You could use an alternative lock screen that supports this.
You can do this with WidgetLocker. (Plus you get to replace that horrible Samsung lock screen.)
if you use Fox player it comes with its own LockScreen replacement
I suppose for now I can put the Spotify widget on the home screen with WidgetLocker.
This will help a bit. I'll be pretty excited when there is a way to do this with the volume buttons though.

Use playerpro, its awesome!! It replaces the lock screen with its own when play music and you can change songs by swiping left or right, or even by holding the vol up or down, i think its like $5 but its totally worth it.

Hi there, I fully recommend PowerAmp. You can change the tracks by holding
the vol buttons up or down. The free version is awesome, but I have bought the full version simply because it's a great development. Seamless playback, support for almost any format/container
Thanks for the feedback guys. I will be giving PlayerPro and PowerAmp a try.
I really like the idea of using the volume buttons to change tracks or even swiping on the homescreen to do it.

Am I the only one that can't tell much of a sound difference between the stock player and playerpro and poweramp? I played the same mp3 on all three, switching back and forth, and I couldn't tell much of a difference. Poweramp may have been slightly better, but then again it wasn't enough for me to be sure.
Plus, they both take up way more CPU than the stock player (to be expected, I guess). Playerpro was constantly going "in the red". I already uninstalled that one. Still on the fence for Poweramp.
The stock is surprisingly easier for me to navigate through my music also. I like to view by folders (which can have a long list of songs) and I like how the stock has that alphabet bar on the right that you can just press the letter to go to. Much faster than dragging the bar to scroll.
Only negative about the stock player is you can't map the volume and power keys to skip/back track, pause, etc.
Are there any in ear headphones that have 3 button volume controls that will work with the S3?
I currently have the Klipsch S4i so I wanted to know if there is anyway to get the volume buttons to work on the S3 (I don't like the S4a version since it's only one button).

The HTC ones that came with my Desire work fine. Much prefer them for cycling with as the in ear types block out sounds of traffic etc around you. There's no volume control but you can skip tracks, pause, play and take calls.
I own a pair of Beats Pro headphones and have a volume control Monster cable.
On my S3, the volume buttons do not work at all, but the mic and the centre button works fine. If I use poweramp, you can set up the double and triple click of the centre button to change tracks.
However, I would love to obtain control of the volume buttons as well...does anyone have any ideas on how this might be achieved? I have been looking for some kind of adapters or something..but no luck...
I also wouldn't mind changing the Monster cable to a volume control compatible one. Any ideas?

What do you mean by "useless for all of us here"? Am I really the only one who is bothered by this? I have accidentally put the ringervolume to very low values a number of times without knowing. The whole function just seems strange to me.To bad there isn't a mod around for it (or to bad that I'm strange, as it seems).

Thanks, I am rooted but un- or remapping the keys is not really what I was looking for. I still want to be able to adjust speakervolume during calls etc... I guess I will have to get used to it.
But is this function really used by people? I am curious, please someone elaborate.
There must be some line of code that goes: while not playing media and vol key is pressed- change ringvolume. Just change that to mediavolume, that was what I was thinking.
Anyway, will drop the subject if no-one is interested.
It is a problem to me, too. I think the default function of volume buttons could be the media volume, not ringtone volume.

Don't buy smartphones then if volume buttons are annoying. Volume buttons is a must for a lot of people, that's why they exist. If phone producers wouldn't make phones without volume buttons, no one should bye these phones. Eventually, you can root your phone and delete volume buttons I key mapping.

Would not be surprised if Apple patented that lol. But not the ability to switch between ringer and mediavolume. My phone would be perfect with something like this implemented, have not found any other annoyances at all.
Have you tried Volume Locker it's free and I used this on my DHD which kept changing.

I have the same problem and still looking for solution
Hi,
It's a shame, that Android doesn't have this feature, but the IPhone.
I've a Samsung Galaxy S3, but the same problem - it would be great if somebody could create a MOD for this problem.
Tim
It would be great to have a mod for volume buttons to change media volume instead of ringer.
For ringer I just use two options, vibrate only or vibrate + ringtone. I don't change ringer volume except incidentally, which is annoying.
I believe that CyanogenMod can remap volume keys behavior.
It's amazing that people reply to this thread before reading the original message.
What I have gathered so far is that the default android build does not allow to decouple the ring volume from the buttons for some mysterious reason.
CyanogenMod roms do have an option that takes care of that!
For phones that do not have CM available some alternatives were posted before.
any solution for stock rooted phones?
Pretend you're using some non-stock headset (because stock one is a complete garbage) that has more than 1 button on it.

You plug it in any android device -- these buttons do what they should, change the volume.
You plug it in an HTC Vision -- these buttons switch tracks for some weird reason! (well, the reason is not that 'weird' -- it's just HTC decided to use these functions on their headset)
Some of you may have tried to edit .kl files, but probably without success.
The secret is that Android detects the headphone jack as another device, that has no configuration created for it (at least on ICS and JB).
That causes the system to use "generic" key layout mapping which clearly says:
Code:
key 163 MEDIA_NEXT
key 165 MEDIA_PREVIOUS
key 226 HEADSETHOOK
The solution for this is pretty simple. We need to find a necessary device, create a configuration for it and put it into /system directory.
Long story short, putting h2w_headset.kl to /system/usr/keylayout (don't forget to set permissions to rw-r--r--) will make headset buttons work like they do on all "normal" devices.
By the way, if you're using CyanogenMod, you're not losing an ability to switch tracks! "Volume rocker track skip" option also works for headset buttons (and you can also double-tap the Play/Pause/PTT button to go to the next track)

As for buttons, there is a pretty good manual on how to make +/- buttons work with Android devices.

Probably a software one, but quite difficult to fix.
All Android-based devices control headset buttons by measuring a resistance between two pins: 0 Ohms (short-circuit) for play/pause/call (this also works with iPhone headsets), plus 220 and 600 Ohms for volume or track switch keys.
This is controlled by a kernel headset driver, which acts as a "mapper" between resistance values and key codes.
Next, key codes are passed to the Android framework, where these key codes are mapped to their "behaviour" (that's where .kl files comes into place)
I don't think this is a hardware issue, because your device detects _every_ resistance change, but always assigns the "default" key code for it.
If it was a hardware fault (let's say, device couldn't detect resistances lower than 100 Ohms), volume buttons wouldn't work at all.

Can you help me to remap the kl files? or is too hard to do this?! it's really painful to not use volumes buttons

Please read my post carefully. That's a kernel-related thing, modifying .kl files won't help here.

Oh damn,i need to report this to huawei then?!
Worked great with my HTC One M8 and HTC Smart Wire headset RCE190.
Now I can control volume while listening music and can use the volume buttons to take pictures with camera.
Thanks :good:
I thought the air gesture feature would be really useful to skip music tracks while riding my motorcycle, but I can't get it to work! I'm using the stock music player, loaded a bunch of songs on the SD card and I turned on the air gesture settings. I can get it to skip tracks by saying "next" using the voice command feature, but this probably won't help much in a full face helmet at 70mph!
What I would like to be able to do is have the phone in the transparent pocket of my tank bag and be able to wave my gloved hand over the sensor to skip a track. In theory it should be possible as long as my hand is within 7cm of the screen, according to Samsung. I tried it out just sitting in front of my computer, and no matter how I wave my hand (and believe me, I've tried all sorts of combinations: fast, slow, closer & further from the screen), I can't get the music to skip a track. Any ideas?
My phone is stock, unrooted, if that helps. I do have a Spigen GLAS.t screen protector on there, but it doesn't cover any of the sensors.
Are you sure you click on air gesture and then air browse and selected music

I believe it only works with the stock music player as well. That sucks. Tried it in poweamp and didn't work.

Is there a specific apk in the /system/app directory for the air gesture feature? I can probably edit it to send a media next broadcast instead of being hard coded to the stock player.

+100 to that
Thankyou elflip88... I didn't have it set to change on the lock screen. Now at least that is working! I don't think that solves my problem of changing tracks when the screen is completely off though. Is there a way to make the phone wake up enough to get to the lock screen with a hand gesture? I have it set to where it shows the time and notifications when you reach for it, but I can't change tracks from that screen.

Apparently, the built-in air gesture only works for the stock media player and only when the phone is awake. You should install "wave control". You can set the media player it works with and switch songs with the screen off. I have used it while driving a moving truck and it works very well. :good:

you all can try Hovering Controls, it emulates Air gesture for all phones (Android 2.2 and up) and works mostly with all music/video players, even with screen off.
you can find it here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.golgorz.hoveringcontrols (for support, Google Play)
and here:

For me wave control did not work. I tried it with pandora (which it says it should work) but every time i tried the gestures it would launch the default music app. I know exactly whats wrong with it but im gonna dig up the Air Gestuers API and make my own instead of editing the smali.
