I thought the air gesture feature would be really useful to skip music tracks while riding my motorcycle, but I can't get it to work! I'm using the stock music player, loaded a bunch of songs on the SD card and I turned on the air gesture settings. I can get it to skip tracks by saying "next" using the voice command feature, but this probably won't help much in a full face helmet at 70mph!
What I would like to be able to do is have the phone in the transparent pocket of my tank bag and be able to wave my gloved hand over the sensor to skip a track. In theory it should be possible as long as my hand is within 7cm of the screen, according to Samsung. I tried it out just sitting in front of my computer, and no matter how I wave my hand (and believe me, I've tried all sorts of combinations: fast, slow, closer & further from the screen), I can't get the music to skip a track. Any ideas?
My phone is stock, unrooted, if that helps. I do have a Spigen GLAS.t screen protector on there, but it doesn't cover any of the sensors.
Are you sure you click on air gesture and then air browse and selected music

I believe it only works with the stock music player as well. That sucks. Tried it in poweamp and didn't work.

Is there a specific apk in the /system/app directory for the air gesture feature? I can probably edit it to send a media next broadcast instead of being hard coded to the stock player.

+100 to that
Thankyou elflip88... I didn't have it set to change on the lock screen. Now at least that is working! I don't think that solves my problem of changing tracks when the screen is completely off though. Is there a way to make the phone wake up enough to get to the lock screen with a hand gesture? I have it set to where it shows the time and notifications when you reach for it, but I can't change tracks from that screen.

Apparently, the built-in air gesture only works for the stock media player and only when the phone is awake. You should install "wave control". You can set the media player it works with and switch songs with the screen off. I have used it while driving a moving truck and it works very well. :good:

you all can try Hovering Controls, it emulates Air gesture for all phones (Android 2.2 and up) and works mostly with all music/video players, even with screen off.
you can find it here:

For me wave control did not work. I tried it with pandora (which it says it should work) but every time i tried the gestures it would launch the default music app. I know exactly whats wrong with it but im gonna dig up the Air Gestuers API and make my own instead of editing the smali.

I recently started using my phone as the music player in my car through my car's stereo Aux port. This is great because it allows me to listen to my Spotify playlists in the car. However, one thing I find annoying about this new setup is that in order to skip tracks I have to unlock the phone and use the screen. While driving this can prove difficult/dangerous.
I'm looking to see if anyone knows a way that I can skip tracks without unlocking the screen, possibly by using the volume buttons.
Right now the only solution I can think of is just to have the display never go to sleep so I can just tap the screen to change a track. The obvious issue with this is that my battery will drain extremely fast. So I'd like to avoid this if possible.
We'll have this with CM7, until then I'm not sure there is a solution. Best thing I have found it using my bluetooth controls (Sony Headset).
You could use an alternative lock screen that supports this.
You can do this with WidgetLocker. (Plus you get to replace that horrible Samsung lock screen.)
if you use Fox player it comes with its own LockScreen replacement
I suppose for now I can put the Spotify widget on the home screen with WidgetLocker.
This will help a bit. I'll be pretty excited when there is a way to do this with the volume buttons though.

Use playerpro, its awesome!! It replaces the lock screen with its own when play music and you can change songs by swiping left or right, or even by holding the vol up or down, i think its like $5 but its totally worth it.

Hi there, I fully recommend PowerAmp. You can change the tracks by holding
the vol buttons up or down. The free version is awesome, but I have bought the full version simply because it's a great development. Seamless playback, support for almost any format/container
Thanks for the feedback guys. I will be giving PlayerPro and PowerAmp a try.
I really like the idea of using the volume buttons to change tracks or even swiping on the homescreen to do it.

i actually tried both but neither one allows me to skip tracks using the volume buttons. is there some specific setting for that? i setup the lockscreen widget for each one thinking that would do the trick but had no luck. Does the ROM matter? im using beastmod.
Actually if you have the music 4.0 app you can user the volume control keys while asleep too skip tracks and go back.. Ex: hold down volume up goes to the next track

Yes, press menu, then settings, the go to lock screen and it gives you the option to override vol controls so you can select long press chsnge song and short press volume, or long press volume and short press change song, theres even an option in settings to shake to change song

long press volume down = previous
Am I the only one that can't tell much of a sound difference between the stock player and playerpro and poweramp? I played the same mp3 on all three, switching back and forth, and I couldn't tell much of a difference. Poweramp may have been slightly better, but then again it wasn't enough for me to be sure.
Plus, they both take up way more CPU than the stock player (to be expected, I guess). Playerpro was constantly going "in the red". I already uninstalled that one. Still on the fence for Poweramp.
The stock is surprisingly easier for me to navigate through my music also. I like to view by folders (which can have a long list of songs) and I like how the stock has that alphabet bar on the right that you can just press the letter to go to. Much faster than dragging the bar to scroll.
Only negative about the stock player is you can't map the volume and power keys to skip/back track, pause, etc.
In case anyone was looking for a music app that has edge screen controls, I just realized my Poweramp does have built in controls along with cover art automatically on the edge screen.
I am not rooted yet, running stock. But i do have the paid version of the app and i downloaded the free poweramp widgets pack... not sure if that makes a difference

So I guess Samsung has built in something to make this happen, that's great. This means we may not be so reliant on others for compatibility.
Power amp just added new edge controls specifically for Edge users! I really dig it but it doesn't add anything as far as panels go. Check it out, I'm on the paid but I'll bet you van check them on the trial version.
I noticed that if i start playback from Google play music's widget the edge controls are not activated, only if i actually start the app. Has anyone figured way around this?

Yes, most apps that place playback controls in the notification panel get edge controls.
However, it appears that some may not.
"Shazam" has notification panel controls but does not create an edge panel.

Install Feel the Wear, you can block notifications from your watch for any app.
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sk.martinflorek.wear.feelthewear&hl=en_US
would you also be able to use the Android Wear App to block the YOUTUBE or GOOGLE MUSIC app notifications?
I have the same issue with Spotify. When I start playing Spotify, I get a spotify full screen thing on the watch with the track played and <</>> controls. Annoying, I don't care about the controls cause I can control Spotify from my true wireless earphones. I can't find a way to disable that.

I've tried this and it seems like it works for YouTube but it doesn't work for Google play music.
I found a way to stop my watch from showing what I'm playing. When you play a video or song from YouTube or Google play music and the media controls show up on the watch, long press the media controls face (in the center) and you get an option menu. One of the options is to turn off the media controls. Hopefully this helps someone.

I can add 4 custom shortcuts with the watch face i'm using (Called "Quante"). In the list of apps and functions, there is one called "media controls". Which means that as soon as I listen to music on the phone, that shortcut let me have access to the media controls.
What I originally wanted is for the media controls to NOT automatically come up, only when I pressed the shortcut and your solution worked like a charm.

I use Nova Launcher (I am signed up for their Beta program) exclusively and have for ~10 years, give or take. The only effect Nova could possibly have in relation to lock screens that I can think of is that you can set gestures that lock the screen, either through Accessibility services without root, which performs a "hard" lock such as rebooting the phone (where you have to enter your primary unlock method - not biometrics), or via root where you can have gestures lock it "properly", which is ironically just like a normal lock. There may actually be a third or hybrid option in Nova that performs a normal lock without root - I can't recall for sure.
I've never seen it affect the contents of my lock screen so it's probably something else. I'm currently using CleanSlate kernel's Sweep to Sleep to lock the screen, so I'm not using Nova's gestures to lock the screen, but I was a month or so ago without any effect on music players, or my lock screen contents that I noticed.
Yeah, I've also been using Nava Launcher for years and never had an issue.

I also have to ask, what is the point of the nest mini with the mic off? The speaker is very low quality compared to other speakers in its price range.

Doorbell, cheap (I got one for $15 and the other for $20), and my wife is happy with how it sounds just fine.
I've got a Denon receiver for the high quality needs.
Since it comes with a physical switch for the microphone, I'm sure there are others who feel similarly.
i've tried doing the boxing trick with smart lock location ie 4 separate location points around the corners of my home location. I used to do that with my samsung. i'll see if that helps. stupid bug tho that should just be fixed.

Oh, another reason is they're very small, you can buy mounts that make it so you can just plug it into the wall and the speaker is held right there above (or below) the wall socket, so it's out of the way.
adding further smart lock points made no difference. nifty trick from google. this particular facility doesn't fully work, so you're pushed towards buying a nest or two.

Did you add and remove your location more than once? That's what I had to do and now my smart lock works flawlessly. It turns on right when I walk in my door and off just a few feet outside it.

smart lock in general is working, but I still randomly get asked to unlock my device when issuing voice commands.
I am having this issue as well. Just switched from 4a 5g to a 6, and ever since then I very frequently hear "but first you'll need to unlock your device", even when I never said anything that even sounds like google. Plus it interferes with me using my dedicated assistant devices in my house. I don't want to disable assistant completely on my phone, because I use it while I am out and about, but if it is locked, I don't want it to respond at all. All of the toggles mentioned in the screenshots here are unchecked, yet it still does it.
Same issue here. I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and it does this all the time. Have anyone tried to suggest a "feature request" to Google Assistant team? Maybe this can be a future enhancement as this is such an important and common use case. I'm thinking that if it really want to be secured, maybe it can trigger something like:
sure, but first you'll need to unlock your phone. What's the passcode? Then if you are driving and can't type in the passcode, you can then just "say" the passcode, etc.
Thoughts? Thanks!
