Nexus Weird Data Usage - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi guys.
On the new JB Rom. So awesome until about 1hr ago. Getting unreal battery life etc then my network just wont stop!! Both wifi and data at the same time just pinging off there heads.
So I thought I'd check my data usage see what's doing. Nova launcher is like in the hundreds of megabytes and get this, my calculator is at like 900mb!!! Wtf!! What's with that? That's foreground and background added but as far as I'm aware, what the f##k would my calc need ANY data whatsoever! Very confusing.
It anyone can shed some light on this it would be great.
Also my available space on phone is reading wrong also. I have like 8gb free and its showing like 2. Anyone else?
Thanks.

[Q] Arc lag and slowing down

Hi everyone,
I have been using the Xperia Arc since May this year. A month or less into its usage I noticed it slowing down considerably. I am not bothered much with the apps which might take their own sweet time to open even in the faster phones. However the main reason for concern are the "Message Inbox" and the "Contacts". They take ages to open and more often than not throw up the "force close" noticfication.
This has caused much heartburn and embarrassment to me.
The last time I had this problem an app from the market called "apps2SD" helped me speed up the phone drastically by freeing up the internal memory. As of now, every app that can be moved to the SD card, has been moved. I have 160MB RAM free, 142MB of internal memory free and 2.2GB in SD. It asks for clearign the cache which I do every now and then.
I also have a lot of messages in my Message inbox. Do they have any part to play in slowing down the phone, when opening the "Msg Inbox"?
The processes running are:
Settings
Mail (yahoo)
Messenger (Yahoo)
Xperia arc flash light
Clock
Data monitor
Gauge battery widget
Crash monitor
sonyerric.usb??
google serv
devicemonitor
music
S E sync
Digi clock
setup guide
mtp app
digi clock
secureclockservice
status switch
market
maps
whatsapp
default input
I have only installed basic apps and games. I am not versed with the advanced applications and I don't know what the "launcher" apps are. Kindly help me.
Thanks in advance.

Depending on how many messages and contacts you have (hundreds?thousands?) opening up a huge database can surely slow down your device.
On which firmware are you? did you root your device and/or unlock your bootloader?
The contacts are just what an average person would have. It might be a hundred or barely two hundred at most.
The messages however are many. A vague guess would be around five hundred. It might even be thousand but not much more than that.
My old Nokia N85 had significantly more contacts and messages. Around 250+ contacts and 2000+ messages, but never threw up such a problem or a delay in accessing them. I am emphasising on them, but even the other apps and regular scrolling has shown significant slowing down.
Firmware is 2.3.3 (if it means Android version) Build number: 3.0.1.A.0.145
It hasn't been rooter or has had the boot loader unlocked.
Try to clear your homescreen widget.
See if anything changes in speed.
I believe that running apps consume alot of ram.
Try using titanium and convert system app to user app, just make sure you've back up before doing so.
And clear anything related to ram, useless apps.

@nujhum
i think that's the point, Sarath_'s device is not rooted that's why Titanium Backup can't be used.
@ Sarath_
Cleaning homescreen widgets and/or applications (settings>applications>manage applications) can help a bit for sure.
Be carefull while cleaning anything other then 'cache' or you might loose some settings also.
Maybe you should consider cleaning out a few messages too
@Nirak
Sorry my bad.
Didnt noticed that.
Since he asking for help, well i suggest @Sarath_ to root his arc, and get started to rid of useless apps with titanium. Dont you agree with me @Nirak?
I guess thats the best solution i can think of now with my locked bootloader.
Sent from my LT15i using Tapatalk
sounds like you have an awful lot of messages on the phone, id start by clearing them down.. why keep so many? maybe you can get an app to back them up if you need to?
@nujhum
absolutely agree! rooting and then a good clean up would be the best option to gain space and speed.
I have a locked bootloader to, cuz i'm an android noob and just a little scared to unlock and loose official SEUS to repair when i mess up
Ever find a solution? I have the exact same problem and I'm on Rogers with a locked bootloader...
How.many free ram you have.

Data usage widget based on system data usage tracking? (Jelly Bean / Root)

Everywhere I've read this question posed online replies either say it can't be done, or it would require root, however there's little elaboration on that point.
Just wondering whether this has been cracked yet? It seems like a widget that would see a lot of use if it existed and was known about. I'm quite surprised the information isn't exposed as a permission, but I guess Google simply have bigger fish to fry.
Thanks for any advice
yeah i recently started to look into a simple data usuage widget that uses what the phone is already measuing only to find no one has done it (obviously my search brought me to this thread).
Im currently testing out 3 different (free) widgets but the problem with all of them is they can only measure data used since installation, not data the OS has already been tracking via the Data Usuage screen within settings. Exposing that data to a widget would be awesome and useful. This would be a great thing if someone were to bring this to market even if it required root. There's certainly has to be a demand...
I know I'm resurrecting a semi-old thread, but I too am looking for something like this and can't believe it's not available yet. Anyone know of one?
I never found one that pulled directly from the system metrics but the best one I've seen and currently use is wali data usage defender. It allows you to track mobile data, wifi, or both, you can put in when your billing cycle ends, your limit, data already used so far, warnings/notifications at preset thresholds, and more. And its free.

Google currents: recent performance issues

I really like google currents and have been using it more than pulse since getting my nexus 7. But just the last few days the performance has been horrible. Sometimes I get the forced close option, even though I select wait as it hasn't actually crashed, just maxing out the cpu for a bit.
Syncing takes a really long time now and when done, most of the articles don't have a screen shot even though I have the option to get images for all articles which has always worked previously. I don't know if I have added one too many news sources? I was going to clear the app cache but I'm concerned if that clears all my selected sources as well? I'm wondering if the sources are stored in the cloud and only the articles are cached.
Not sure what else to try but something is hurting the performance of this app lately.
Btw, previously I have a nook color and I have lots of articles starred in pulse. It's just running cm7 off a sdcard so I never installed titanium backups or anything. Is there a manual way I could take all t he cached stuff for pulse from my nook to the nexus 7?
I can't comment on your problems with Google Currents as I don't use it.
For Pulse, if you create a Pulse.me account, you can restore your selected subscriptions and starred article to your other phones or tablets.

I use Currents also. I find it Sync's in about 5 seconds. You can clear cache, it only clears what has synced. Don't "clear data", that's all your preferences. I get all the photos and is acting no different than when I first started using it. I only have 20 links.
If you're getting below 4g free storage, you might be running into the issues described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776538
Not sure how helpful this may be but I was also having problems with Currents taking a long time to load. I realized that I started experiencing the issue when I had switched my offline reading settings to include all images in all editions. As soon as I changed it to only include it in the first 10 editions I noticed an improvement. Perhaps it may be worth taking a look.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to try them shortly and report back. I noticed I'm getting a little more lag than usual in chrome so maybe it's not just currents but instead I've entered the dreaded lag zone as described in that other thread. But 4gigs? I thought I read there it was 2. Even 2 is ridiculous for a swap file or whatever it needs. But if it's 4 gigs, we lose a few gigs to the OS of the 16 and then we have to keep 4 gigs free for good performance?! And yes I'm below that, I'm a tad below 2 gigs now. Bought nova 3 and MC3 recently which put me below. And I notice both of them have a startup thing running. Or so Autorun manager tells me. That and a few other apps that I think have no business running on startup. Something like pulse (the purpose being to cache articles in the background) I can understand, but Nova 3? Why?
And what irks me more is not having an elegant way of stopping this. I know the android way is the OS should manage apps/memory and not the user and I get that, however I should still have a way of preventing these apps from launching. From what I've read no app really stops them from launching but rather kills them after launch. Or ones that do you need to be rooted.
I do have that option selected to cache all images and not just first 10 editions. What does first 10 editions mean exactly? the first 10 sites I've added? Or the first 10 stories within each? If the former, there's no way I can see of controlling what would be the first 10.
Even though I really like the layout of currents, maybe I'll switch back to pulse just for the simple fact of being able to retain an article.
I hope it's just a currents issue and I don't actually need to retain 4 gigs free.
If these things fail I'm going to uninstall Nova3/MC3 and see.

What this means?

Somebody knows what this option means? What if i check this "no background process"?
Tnx

Usually the advice is to leave most developer options alone, except usb debugging and show touches, or something like that.
This will cut out any background process like it says... for you it will cut data traffic counters, alarms (maybe), e-mail, any IM clients that you might have and anything that works in the background pretty much.
The positive side is that it will save you LOTS of battery.

since it's positive what can i do for makin' it ticked permenantly??
This option was great for older phones that had 512MB ram, but with 2GB of ram, probably best if it is left alone.

R U sure it will save battery? From what i know, when d program get kill, and later need to on back when the user want to use it, it will consume more power compare to program that running at background and once u want to on it, it will simply on n not consume much power to restart etc..

its up to you which option you want to choose, i have found it very useful. if you run a lot of apps, after quiting the apps it will stay in the memory as a background process. if the 'standard' limit is set your ram can even fall below 200mb. having standard limit will keep the ram and systm busy as well. hence i always go for ' 4 background process', i can easily get up to 1200mb free ram on average and it doesn't affect multitasking..

I can't see the point of this myself - free memory like that is just wasted memory in my experience.
On my Note 1, I'd often find a process had been killed when I switched away for a while and had to wait for it to be reloaded. No such problem on the Note 2 where the process can stay in memory almost indefinitely. I find the Note 2 far more efficient productivity wise because of this.
Yes, it will use slightly more battery, but given the already epic battery life of the Note 2, it's a no brainer in my opinion.

Dave

[Q] Anyone else notice some lag after the first few days? need help if you have!

So i've only had the phone for a few days and started noticing lag mainly in the settings yesterday.
It was buttery smooth the first few days until yesterday. I'll try to create a clear description of what is happening.
Everything in terms of hitting applications, sliding/switching pages, and browsers seems smooth but I'm getting doubts since settings have started lagging. So as of now, the settings menu is where I really notice the problem. What happens is I would press any of the choices such as display, sound, storage, etc and it would light up blue as a sign that I pressed it. Basically, the blue lighting stutters/lags as it turns into a deeper color and fades away proving that there is some lag. That itself is very irritating on such a powerful phone. The page also lags a bit as it's opening so it's obvious that it does lag. I don't understand why something as simple as settings might be causing this?
have any of you guys noticed this? I tried clearing ram, restarting phone, messing with dev options by changing animation and something else to .5x while enabling "force GPU rendering." I'm running stock touchwiz on baseband T889UVALJ1 if that helps. Keep in mind i'm not really tech savvy so try to suggest things in an easy to understand way please.
Any help is greatly appreciated and I hope you guys can help me fix my problem!
Been using it for the past 1 month plus and I do not have any lagging issues. I am on stock rom as well.
No lag either, been using the Note 2 for 2 months now. Check your apps with BetterBatteryStatts (too many backgroundservices runing).
No lag either. Did u install some crappy apps that run backstage

Thanks for the replies so far and before I spend some money on apps or what not, is there any way I can post a 5 second animation of what is happening? Kind of like a 5 second gif of my screen? A mix of a screenshot and video so like a screen vid? Are there are any apps that can do that(preferably free). I'll try to find an app that can do that in the meantime and will edit if I find something useful.
Edit: No idea what this is or how it ended up on my phone but could this be the culprit? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tgrape.android.radar
People say it's bloatware and s-suggest from samsung but i'm not sure why it would be shown as an app on the play store website
I have noticed the phone can lag a bit if you have a heavy live wallpaper running.
Just sharing my thoughts on this
did you modify anything? no lags on my N2.
normally i'd say if you leave your phone on for a few days in a row, clear the memory every once in a while (press and hold home, go task manager, ram tab, clear memory) or reboot it, just so you dont have anything residual in your ram.
when android sees that you have 2gb of ram, it doesnt auto kill as many apps as it would if you were to have only 1gb of ram (my note 1 autokilled sooooooo frequently that it was annoying), so your ram ends up getting filled with some apps that you only used once in a while.

I wrote that I tried clearing ram and restarting phone but it didn't help. Thanks for trying though
Yeah, I get a bit of lag here and there, specially if I haven't cleared running/background apps in a while.
I just do it from the task manager, and also check out what apps are using the most battery, and possibly therefore are some of the likely culprits.
I actually use this app called Carat, which is an "Energy bug detector app" (whatever that means), but it helps identify apps that are draining the battery, and incidentally, partially contributing to the lag.
Also obvious thing like live wallpapers or touchwiz in general (including all the 'special' Samsung features like smart rotate, smart stay, smart motion) probably add to it to. Nova launcher and a static wallpaper might help.
I'll try to post a video sometime soon showing the lag. It's not serious lag, but it does stutter and lag a decent amount compared to my first few days which is what sucks.

You can try enabling Force GPU rendering in developers options. That usually helps with that, or at least it seemed to in my case. Report back if it actually helped
quick update:
I found a vid and my lag basically looks like this http://youtu.be/0qyijcTeHcU?t=2m27s
Look at when he clicks on display, there is clearly some lag even if it is half a second - 1 second. I'm almost certain that my lag is even worse than that, but not by too much. It's just a pain in the ass after the first few days. Would flashing a custom rom like jedi X 7.2 help out with this since it's running a bravia engine?
