Oh boy. "Phone storage space is getting low." Google, please sort it out.

The dreaded message for not much space left. I've recently been testing out a few apps to suit my needs. And I've bumped into the message that shows the limitations of the eminently custmisable Android. And I haven't even downloaded one game!!!
I'm really hoping Froyo 2.2 (if that is what it will be called) will sort this out.
Pleeeeeeeease Google. Do us all a favour. Give us some room to maneuver.

I hope it gets sorted soon too. But as has been mentioned previously, HTC could have easily put 4-8gb onboard, plenty of space to install apps.

Google are adressing the issue, just have no idea when!

Interestingly, I was thinking that the manufacturers of Android devices must know something because all the current crop of high end devices don't really have more than 1gig of memory. RAM or ROM. The Incredible being the exception. This was more nailed home when the Dell future devices (Thunder, Lightning, Flash, etc) came on the news feeds. The devices had no more on board memory than what we have now. And they are scheduled for release in 2011!
We all know Google is aware of tje issue. But what and when they are going to do is anyones guess. Amd why manufactures haven't been releasing devices with increasing on biard memory is perhaps telling.

Google has already officially advised a couple of weeks ago that a solution will be available soon. What the timeframe of soon is hasn't yet been defined, nor whether it will be a patch fix or a froyo upgrade. But either way, it's coming soon

I thought it was a battery life issue? that larger on board storage tended to lead to battery life being very short. What they need is a secure version of app2sd that's official and doesn't lead to piracy. Hopefully 2.2 will contain this.

I have low space and I know that, does anyone know how to remove the notification without having to uninstall apps as I don't plan at the moment to install any more until the update. I think I will give it a month and if the update isn't out by then I will try root and apps2sd.

clearing cache seems to be daily task now.

I don't believe this. I just uninstalled Google Earth so that I could test another app. Didn't like the app. Removed it. Went to instally Google Earth again.
Can't find it in the Market.
Can't find in via m.google.com/earth. Message "The requested item could not be found."
Can't access it via the link that Google sends via sms.
Just my luck!

Search the nexus forums for the apk and install it directly.
That's what I did, no problems.

Login via your Google account via appbrains app then search via the app or the link http://www.appbrain.com/ via your PC...
Choose install in the web browser for example and via the app on the phone choose manage and sync
@ OP yes hope for 2.2 or in other words Froyo will have it, but curious how fast HTC will get us an update
What I personally use to manage the ridiculous small app memory space I use the app "Quick app" to cleanup cache space.

This is completely driving me nuts now. Every single day the same issue. At first it only triggered below 8mb free but now its become a joke. Same error even at 17mb free and can't install anything.

I feel you. I just uninstalled a few, reinstalled G Earth, have 15.something MB left, and no notification. Maybe it needs to drop below 15 or get to 12.

I don't get how you've run out of space... I've got 87 apps installed on my phone (counted every icon on the pop up full program list) and still got 47MB's left...

A quick count up shows that 37 of those icons are pre-installed anyway, so you've not got quite so many apps as you think.
Add in a satnav and 8 or 9 games like me, and you will find yourself at the limit very quickly :-(

Yeah I understand that a lot are pre-installed, but that still leaves 50 apps installed. I've not got sat nav installed (use google maps navigation) but i've got 20 games installed (nothing major like a big 3d game).
Does the sat nav install its self to the phone? Guess that would take up a lot of room...

What's the best way to clean out the phone cache etc. I found Quick Cache Cleaner that got me a few MB back from the browser.

Except a few system ones (Gmail, Messages..), why do apps open even if I never used them? Especially the HTC ones (Stocks, Footprints), they are really annoying apps I never opened.
Can this be solved somehow? It may not use resources or battery but I don't understand why I can't decide what to open.
It feels like the Windows system tray, bunch of stuff often stuck there autostarting with no way of removing it (if not by using 3rd party programs).

i was about to post the same question. Just dont understand why they start when i got my sync set to manual

totally agree that all these apps/services or whatever you call just annoying as they are started without user permission. Hv raised a similar thread some time ago, and Im not expert on such issues, but as far as I understand, the only way to get rid of them is -unfortunately- passing through root & custom roms.. No way out to stop them from being run automatically especially the Sense ones. However, acc to more advanced users or developers, they are not so "dangerous" in terms of battery consumption, nor any other impact on system as long as user do not activate and use them. For those which requires synching e.g. stocks, news, facebook, peep etc. it is enough to keep autosynch option disabled, thus it is no longer needing to think/care about them, that's it. But if the point is to ensure more room available in the internal memory, then -as said- the only solution is flashing rom with any 3rd party rom like cyanogen, modaco, defrost, ........
Me? still stuck with the official froyo on my unbranded, unrooted Desire (since April 13th)

when you download them you give them all the permissions they need, if you dont like the way a program behaves ..... simple dont download it

it starts them, cause it has enough memory to cacche them.
so when you want to launch them, they open fast. simple as that.
when do people stop worrying about memory and all this. android handles that very well. no reason for watching memory and running programs even.

Put simply, the reason why these start at boot is because they are set to receive the ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED intent.
Allows an application to receive the ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED that is broadcast after the system finishes booting. If you don't request this permission, you will not receive the broadcast at that time. Though holding this permission does not have any security implications, it can have a negative impact on the user experience by increasing the amount of time it takes the system to start and allowing applications to have themselves running without the user being aware of them. As such, you must explicitly declare your use of this facility to make that visible to the user.

Bear in mind that 99.99% of Android users will never know that this has happened, or that these processes were started. So, if they want to use Stocks, Peep, or whatever, they don't need to make a conscious decision to have the app start automatically - it just does.
Whilst I'm sure Google could build in an official API to allow you to control this behaviour, it would only be of benefit to a very tiny minority of users.

All I want would be an option to disable autostart.
I found it in fring, for example, and would like to see other developers add this option as well.

The only bad impact you could have is that boot time could be a couple of seconds longer for every application that starts. Otherwise, that memory it occupies will be freed the second the system needs it and CPU-wise, those applications are staying idle in the background

Same here. Android has a slightly ridiculous amount of processes and apps running in the background all the time, and while they in theory shouldn't put a strain on the battery when they're not using the CPU, I'm beginning to think that they do since battery life on Android usually is awful, no matter how many precautions you take.

exactly, no matter how many precautions you make, so you are basically saying it doesn't matter how many apps are "running"... It makes no difference whether memory is used by an app or not.

With "precautions" I wasn't referring to killing processes, but general battery saving precautions, many based on common sense. I agree that task killers never should be used, unless a specific app has frozen and is given you trouble. But you can just go to Android's own Applications screen for that.

Is there a free way to stop applications from starting up?
This can be accomplished with a cheap app Autostarts, but I would rather not pay.

i'm trying the trial of startup manager, blocks some but not all. looks like it just kills the process once it's started tself. gonna get rid, and just use the task manager i have now.
it doesnt matter if it only makes a small difference, it's (for me anyway) about control, no different that on the PC
i have plenty of RAM in my PC but i wont allow every single program to have something start itself at bootup. it;s annoying. that's why i use msconfig to kill em.
that's what we need for android.

I don't know of other programs, but autostarts works quite well, and it's not that expensive, as I recall.

Late to the party, unrooted GB, gmail & low space issues...

So I've been living in a low-tech bubble and just got the OTA, tried searching for answers on why G-mail no longer syncs and why I get a false low space warning... didn't find anything too helpful in a hurry... Throwing myself at your mercy. TIA

You mentioned it's a false warning. Are you sure that it is? The partition where your apps and associated data is stored is ludicrously small, 150MB, even though your app manager will show you all of your free internal space. When you go into manage apps and sort by size, what are your 5 largest apps and the space listed for them?

Do you store your contacts on your phone or do they live on Gmail?
Are you syncing FB contact information for you contacts as well?
The reason I ask: My g/f has a HTC Desire and had this issue 2 days after she had the phone, had 2 apps installed from the Market. WTF right?! Her contact storage was over 90 MB itself, which were phone contacts. I took the time to input all of those contacts she had into Gmail, and cleared contact storage. I also rooted her phone.
I disabled FB syncing for her contacts, as that was also contributing to ballooning storage for her contacts. Since doing this, she hasn't had this issue. That phone is plagued with that issue, but you may want to see what apps are taking up a ton of space, clear their caches like previously stated by "Haus".
EDIT: Gmail may not be syncing due to the low space warning, and you won't be able to send/receive texts either. Do have a ton of old texts that you save? You may want to delete some of those as well if you do.

My internal memory lists 500mb unused. I store everything possible on SD. Contacts via gmail. I do sync FB for the image avatars, but with the above mentioned space I can't see how that alone would cause the issue. All of this started after the OTA yesterday... Leads me to believe that there is an issue outside of my storage space, something tied to the update. Found random posts on other forums this AM where MANY others had same 2 issues resulting right after their OTA but most were from Sept. I figured these would be old news, with quick fixes by now... Anyone else seen this?

Even though it lists 500 MB free, the DInc only has 150 MB total partitioned for apps (which is referring to the /data/data partition). When it gets close to that 150 MB, you'd get that warning.
Are you rooted?
There is a work around for this, but you'd have to be rooted running a ROM like Jermaine's Stock+, and there's a mod which increases the 150 MB /data/data partition to virtually unlimited. See here.

Unrooted (see post title)... so, the act of installing GB zapped up so much room that I am too close to the limit for my phone to function properly? Would GB install into the 150mb space for apps? As it's OS I'd think storage would be elsewhere? Also txting works fine atm.

Sorry, my bad, I missed that in the title. What is the size of your Contact Storage?
Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - All tab at the top - scroll to Contacts Storage. It'll list the size underneath it.
Short of doing a factory reset to see if that fixes things, I'm not sure what to have you try since you are factory stock 2.3 other than contact VZW and/or HTC to see what they say. Since it wasn't happening before, and now it is, they'd either need to fix it or replace your phone.
EDIT: Also, what is the size say for com.htc.socialnetwork.provider?
EDIT 2: Menu - Settings - About phone - Software Information - Build Number, what are the numbers here? The latest OTA should have been 4.08.605.2.

So... I deleted date associated with FB and also ran the tip in the last post on the thread I linked to...
...He then had me dial a code (*#*#CHECKIN#*#*) and said if the update hadn't pushed in 72 hours to call them again. Guess I'll know by Sunday.

Not sure if that had anything to do with it or not but somewhere along the line the space error went away and gmail starting syncing... I guess I am now just concerned with will happen again the next time I have an update of any kind to apps that can't be stored on SD.
grrr.... guess I'll be looking to jump the incredible ship when my upgrade comes through in a few months.
BTW... my contacts storage reads 14MB but not sure why/how as I have no contacts stored on phone.

14 MB isn't too bad. If you have no contacts stored on your phone, you could clear that information, and Gmail will just re-sync it, so you wouldn't lose anything or delete contacts. I did see something in a post about going to an HTC link and downloading a "hotfix" file to install for this issue, but these were before this latest OTA that came out, and I couldn't find anything about anyone having success with it as far as this latest OTA is concerned.

I guess I should rephrase... I don't want to have any contacts stored purely on my phone... is there anyway to sort and see?

Yep, converts /data and /cache to ext4, which speeds things up as far as the file system goes. I'm just using the normal version of this mod, but I highly recommend it!

I guess I should also mention the other annoying issue... battery life is terrible after the OTA... anyone else?

a large portion of us on here have rooted our devices, and cured our phones of these ailments. No more limited data applications thanks to the Ext4 mod, and no terrible battery life thanks to custom kernels to help govern how the battery is utilized.
If you have the resources, I highly recommend rooting your incredible and installing a custom ROM

I just don't have the bandwidth in my life ATM to learn/do anything new... was just looking to see if anyone knew of a unrooted fix...
guess that is too much to hope for though

The unrooted fix is to uninstall applications and clear some caches.
Thats about it AFAIK other than wiping everything or rooting.

my wife has the incredible and up till now she wouldn't let me root her phone and now that she's on 2.3 she wants to root it and dive into the custom rom scene. i tried rooting it with unrEVOked but was unsuccessful even tried showing it a custom clockwork recovrey to flash however I still couldnt figure it out. Any "easy" way to root after going to 2.3

There's a thread, I think in Development about how to do it, looks involved but possible.

My note 2's 2GB of RAM is ****ed up, some apps I don't know about them uses up all the RAM and it makes my phone ****ing slow. It's ****ing pissing me off.
It goes to 357MB then to 1.34GB.
Is there any way to fix this issue?

To fix your problem you're going to have to tell us some more about your phone and what you've done.
Is it rooted? If so, what rom and kernel are you running?
Did you try to simply reboot the phone? (Also a good idea to cold boot it, meaning to shut it off, remove the battery, put it back in and boot up).
It's doesn't help what so ever to force close apps that are not misbehaving. The Android system manages this perfectly fine. Only force close an app if there is something wrong with it.
What apps have you installed? Some of them might be taking up alot of RAM and running in the background.
I was nice to you, now please do the same to us.

My Samsung Galaxy note 2 is not rooted.
I restart my phone couple of times if the number exceeded.
I have 39 apps downloaded from Google Play.
I was angry because it annoys crap out of me so pardon me.

Okay.
If your phone is running slowly and you're not rooted, then it is 99% sure an app problem.
It could be a hardware flaw in your phone, but my guess is app related (If your phone was as slow as it is now, when you got it, it is probably hardware related).
Try uninstalling any unneeded apps, like various tools you downloaded once to try it out, games you dont really play, etc etc.
Try to clear your cache. There are several apps out there that can do it (Some require root, and can clear more caches than non-root ones can, just try a non-root cache cleaner).
After doing that, do a cold boot as i refered to in my last post and see if it is better.
If not, try and go into Settings, Applications, Running Applications and see if there are any major apps that you installed yourself (not the ones that came with the phone) running and try to uninstall the ones taking up the most power, then do a cold boot again and see if it improved.
If nothing works, try and post a list of the apps you have installed on your phone that you installed yourself.

I don't think its hardware related. When I got first my Note 2 it was suprisingly fast. So it's probably the apps.
I've cleared all my caches, deleted a lot of unneeded apps and also done the cold boot after that I navigated to Settings>Applications manager> running apps.
I noticed samsung's keyboard took 55mb of ram, google service 20mb. maps 32mb. play store 10mb. settings 39mb 0_0. Those apps that came with the phone took a lot of ram. why is that? is there anyway to decrease the number?

You can use Titanium Backup to freeze or unintstall any apps that aren't needed by the OS. This will prevent them from ever starting up again.

Is the used up ram actually causing you problems? As I understand it android will make use of the ram to help switch apps quicker. So if its high its not a problem.

there are apps out there that tells you which apps uses the most cpu cycles. i can't recommend one as i don't use them, but might help you pinpoint your problem-app.

So you want more Ram han? Here is a very simple trick
Go to developer option
Select limit background processes and then select 4 processes...
You will see ram will fall below 1 gb

As far as I know, it makes my phone laggy when the number is high and the animation when you open a folder seems slow and also for notifications

Hello xda community!
Recently i modded a little bit my Xperia arc (LT15i). Reflashed stock .587 ROM, rooted, unlocked bootlader, changed kernel(ArcKnight_4), installed Walkman Player V7.5, Overclocked to 1.6Ghz(arcknight_II/noop). Everything is running perfectly, i'm very satisfied(but still i think that ICS needs linux 3 to run properly).
But except those cool things i observe(and experience) there is a minor bug which ruins down my customer experience. It is strange since i've rooted that when i use large amount of memory(music, pictures, videos, browser, etc) that the messaging app won't restart. It makes me nervous when i accidentally open the Messages and when i see that there was an important message sent several hours ago. For now my only reason is to open and minimize the Message app before i lock the phone(it is really irritating).
Some friends of mine told me that only Cyanogen has the option to keep the message app in memory, but after i tried several ROMs, i really have no intention to reflash and restore my data again.
If there is a chance of achieving this goal without reflashing the ROM i would be very happy. Thanks in advance

Reflashed stock .587 ROM, rooted, unlocked bootlader, changed kernel(ArcKnight_4), installed Walkman Player V7.5, Overclocked to 1.6Ghz(arcknight_II/noop). But except those cool things i observe(and experience) there is a minor bug which ruins down my customer experience. It is strange since i've rooted that when i use large amount of memory(music, pictures, videos, browser, etc) that the messaging app won't restart. It makes me nervous when i accidentally open the Messages and when i see that there was an important message sent several hours ago. For now my only reason is to open and minimize the Message app before i lock the phone(it is really irritating).

Maybe you have to much messages stored in your message apps
Try to delete some of them

I have around 800 messages. I'll clean them and i hope that this will work. Thanks!
EDIT:
Definitely doesn't work. As every OS it must have an option for changing app priorities. How I can do that?
