Then this is why we got custom roms. So I'm sure it will be ported some way.

yeah, HTC Desire will not support Gingerbread. Froyo will be the last Android update to Desire.
Gingerbread won't be out till January 2011 earliest. It will be a major change in UI and function over the Android 2.X strand. Desire would need 6 months to port it over. It also might not be easy to implement Sense UI on Gingerbread. Plus, new HTC phones will be due out in Q2 of 2011 I would guess, so Froyo will be last update on Desire.

As far as Google said that Android 3.0 would make UI peronalizations remain needless, there is no need for HTC to port Sense UI, isn't?

Well you will most likely still need the drivers from HTC for it to work.

Then use the drivers from Froyo to Gingerbread.
It would just be like using Windows Vista drivers on Windows 7....... Easy enough.
well, lets just wait 8 or 9 months and see

yes, that can be done.
but if gingerbread is not coming to desire, i may liquidate this mobile set before it gets too old and get a new one
"Will the Desire get Gingerbread"??? - from HTC, I doubt it...
from XDA - somehow I think it will... can you imagine it all those devs working away thinking "new OS to play with on my Desire, no thanks!"... lol

The only thing Desire lacks from hardware is the internal memory. HTC definitely should work for Gingerbread update on recent models like Desire HD/Desire Z. If thats done porting that to Desire will not be too difficult using A2SD. Yea for some drivers it will be problem. Still I hope xda-devs can do that in few months. As far as official support is concerned I guess Desire will get an update from HTC for either the new Sense UI (as heard from lot of rumors) or a delayed Gingerbread support with less functions or UI features etc. At least Gingerbread is not too heavy update on Froyo. So I guess the fortune of Desire is not too dull unless HTC decides to archive it.
I don't feel like liquidating this nice piece of hardware before Honycomb arrives.
It's been seen running on N1 via submitted AirBench test, so Desire users will get it from the N1 release.
Hi
I just contacted htc support and asked them about the gingerbread. They replied me in this way:
With regards to your enquiry, Kindly note that all we have that gingerbread will be released, but we didn’t get specific information yet about the upgradeable device and regions as they are still testing the compatibility with all devices to decide the applicable devices.
Crikey... If HTC don't release 3.0 for the Desire, it'd be a pretty poor show... Being outdone by Apple?! After all, everything bar the iPhone 2G supports iOS4!
GreeneComputing the developers of linpack has announced that while checking users benchmark results last week that 17% of phones using the software were using somthing other than android 2.1 or 2.2 that accounts for arround 158 roms the most unique version numbers being android 3.0, 3.0.1 and 3.2, so who has these android roms you think? google beta testers maybe? ive also seen a picture of a nexus one allegedly running gingerbread http://bit.ly/aLE3HU so maybe a leaked build isnt far away
wish i had one :O
hope it wont be long before a leaked rom comes out
Cool and orange htc hero seems too have android 2.1 update
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
err, it could also be 1.5 or 1.6 ?
assuming it is A3, wouldnt we have radio problems? i mean (afaik at least), the dell streak is on 1.6 and can't be upgraded to 2.1 (even via the modders) without an official radio from dell.
i'd love to try out A3 in a month or 2, but it surely wouldn't work - unless it's out for the N1, and that radio could be ported over to the desire?
If I remember, back when the Desire HD was first announced and then subsequently released someone started a vicious rumour that HTC had gone on record to say that the Desire would be getting an update sometime in november to include some of the fancy new features that came along with Sense HD
*** Let me make it clear that I don't want a port of the Desire HD rom **** before some smart arse chirps in with:
you can already get the sense HD stuff, just flash a custom HD rom. NO, I don't want that. It's still buggy, the ROM is huge and it's only worth using if you Apps2EXT it, and frankly, I can't be bothered to go with the partitioning process.
Is the Sense stuff for the HD so integrated in the ROM that it can't be stripped away and not added to the standard Froyo Desire ROMS?
So, what news say you?
there has been a lot of rumors about that but I guess it wont come that soon ...
they keep focusing on the latest models as everyone does since its all about the money.
Hi! I'd like to know which is the last version of android OFFICIALLY published by htc for the desire (not an unofficial rom by xda). Is the 2.2 or still 2.1? There will be a future upgrade to 2.3? Thank you very much!

Are you serious?? I don't mean to sound rude but seriousely have you read anything at all on the desire forums ??
The latest official version of android is 2.2 aka Froyo It is possible that 2.3 will come to the desire and although there are certainly a lot of rumors that it's going to happen honestly until it's announced or out then i reserve judgement!
when you use Gingerbread there will be 2.3.3 but its is a kind of fake the lastest version is 2.2 how the guy over me said
but i heard that HTC will realease the official GB Rom and then the lastest version will be 2.3

My thoughts exactly.
Sorry, i've read some threads, but i'm really a noob in these things, and i didn't understand if 2.2 was official or not (also because in htc's site there aren't updates in download section, then where can i find official one?). Sorry also for this other question...but the fact that in some threads you speak about recording at 720p with froyo 2.2, this is only for custom xda rom or it's an official improvement even in htc official 2.2 rom? Thank you very much

It's better to ask someone in this community than live in the dark. To answer your question, yes the latest official version for the desire is 2.2. It has been confirmed by HTC that the desire is going to get 2.3 & yes 720p recording is a standard feature in android 2. 2 for the desire. If your looking for and official Rom to download, check the development subsection in the desire forum. If you don't have any experience at installing updates or roms I suggest you read about the pros and cons before you attempt anything as you will find all the needed info on this site.

Thank you for your replies! But however i don't understand why htc didn't updated the tech specs of desire in their site with the recording at 720p. Would it be possible to change the video recording format from 3gp to mp4/h264 (or other)? (Also with unofficial xda roms). Again Thank you!
Official Android 2.2 version for Desire has MPEG4 and H.264 recording.
Last unbranded HTC rom is 2.29.405.5

probably.. anyway it's also confirmed that desire will get Gingerbread (maybe GB 2.4 ) in Q2 2011

I think it's just 2.3 in Q2 and then maybe, just maybe 2.4 later one. It's taking bloody ages to have an official release of 2.3 so 2.4 will prob take.... about 10 years. I wish manufacturers looked after current customers rather than forgetting about them more or less.
from what I understand most manufacturers will 'skip' 2.3, as 2.4 is gingerbread with fixes and there's not much difference.
however if rumors aren't true, and 2.4 will be ice cream sandwich, then I doubt our beloved desire will even get it :| (though I'm sure devs will manage to get a port working ;D)

It's behavior like that from manufactures that forces us to root so that we won't be left in the dark. Props to the all the devs for all their work.

Hi there,
I've just join this zone for haft a month and wanna to do something with this `Dev Dream Phone`. (I'm talking about G2 & Desire Z in this thread)
I see there are many ICS ROMs ported from CM9, MIUI v4 but not see any kernel 3.0 for it.
I think this thread could help to discuss and help to merge current branch of kernel 2.6.35 to 3.0 then we will have more features from v3, compatible with ICS, less problem and good performance since inherited many improvement from v3.
So, for get started with, I will need someone who know exactly current state of development / port for this device. It will be more easy after we have a clearly view.
Some questions:
- Which is best kernel implemented / tweaked / modded known work for ICS or GB on this device ?
- Where are there repositories?
- Any effort to port kernel 3.0 to make it work on this device?
- Anyone success to boot a ROM with kernel 3.0?
- Any problem we are facing?
Update 1:
- Sensation HTC Kernel HTC 3.0.16: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448799
Thank you for reading and wishing we will have success with this update.
Regard & Cheer from Vietnam

We need to wait for a leaked version of a 3.0 kernel for our chipset, don't we ? Maybe the leak of the Sensation XL ROM that was posted about recently might help (Sensation XL has same chipset as DHD, i.e. same as us).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Yeah, I think so, it is easier for us while Sensation has same chipset as our devices.

The Sensation is not msm7x30 and will not help in anyway.
Just check Sensation and see it is using difference chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260, but at least it is HTC & Qualcomm so, hope it will be not very difficult!
Sensation is a different chipset, but Sensation XL is the same as ours

What's wrong?
I browse specs on pdadb.net and see that all Sensation phones are using MSM 82xx while our is MSM 72xx
FYI, http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=3094&c=htc_sensation_xl_x315__bass_htc_runnymede

Not all MSM82xx are the same as ours. Sensation (Pyramid) uses MSM8260, which is a different chipset (e.g. Adreno 220 GPU vs our Adreno 205). Sensation XE uses that too. Sensation XL uses MSM8255 and that's the same as Desire HD and Desire S, which is also the same chipset (just different clock speed) as our MSM7230.
So ICS for Sensation XL will help us a lot (same chipset). ICS for Sensation or Sensation XE doesn't really help us at all.

Forget about getting kernel source from HTC. It isn't going to happen. This work has to be done the HARD WAY.

Nope, I have to disappoint you but once htc releases the kernel for the Sensation XL, Desire S or Desire HD, we will be able to reuse most of that for our devices. Also the leak of the XL will be a great base to start building a fully functioning ics rom (with proper gpu and camera drivers). So chin up and be positive

???
HTC has already released kernel source for previous releases, so they'll do the same for ICS. Maybe you were referring to the source for proprietary drivers which they won't release, but that's fine because we don't need that anyway, we can just use the compiled libraries etc (e.g. we don't have HTC source code for some of the drivers for Gingerbread for our phone, but we still have lots of great GB ROMs).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
HTC have GB upgrade via OTA then we have a lots of GB ROMs is of course, ICS is a bit harder but we have many ROMs here anyway
And this device is absolutely open everything then it is not very hard to get something work except when we reach limit of technical like memory size, Internal Storage or CPU power...
So, be positive
