[Q] using Heimdall Frontend - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I never used heimdall its my only way since I have Ubuntu. Before I had windows XP but the computer blew up and I was given a computer with ubuntu by my cousin. ANYWAY. I want to know do the files have to be in order before I flash and if so can you give me the correct name in order. Im trying to go back to stock rooted. Also what should I flash and not flash. BTW im on MTD.

when using heimdall, you just extract the individual files from the stock .tar file and put each individual file in the correct spot/slot in heimdall. I use heimdall all the time for my phone and tab and never had any issues, where half the time I can't get odin to work properly.

Super Confused About Heimdall

Hi, I'm trying to put stock 2.2 back on my Epic and I'm using Heimdall as I don't have my Windows PC here at college.
So I have 1.31 frontend installed and opened, but I cannot for the life of me, find what needs to go under "Heimdall Firmware Package." Where can I find that file? And also for the PIT, I just downloaded the 2.2 tar for the Epic from the XDA wiki, is that the right thing?
Thank you so much!
I don't have heimdall set up...but i think the tar goes into firmware DO NOT QUOTE ME...and the pit goes into pit obviously. The pit is a .pit file needed for partitioning.
I always use 7zip to open the tar and put them into the correct spots on Heimdall. This was I can use my own choice of recovery and param.ifs.
Yes, you have to open the tar file and put each individual piece into the appropriate section of heimdall

how can I fix this partition problem?

here are the snapshots. The first two are when I try to flash the stock GB rom. The other two are when I try to flash the stock ICS. The next one is when I try to flash the ICS all-in-one tool...
Nothing... I wanted to Re-partition my NAND. (I think is the last thing to do before to say it is a hardware issue).
Someone here in the forum post his .pit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1557554&d=1355324369), but it can get it work either. The last picture is the error the odin gives me when i try to re-partition.
I don't really know, but I would try finding an Odin image with a separate known working PIT file.
Edit: Never mind, I see you are already trying that in another thread.
weird..

I'm not finding it... I even have a friend who has the z3x box, and they only provide the one package md5 to flash.
I've been asking here in the forum, but just one person gave me a pit file, unfortunately it doesn't work for me.
I've been google it for about 4 days now. =(
for what it's worth, have you tried flashing with a different usb cable? maybe there is a bad connection.
also is kies installed on your pc? if so uninstall it. there may be conflicts with drivers. how did you get partition errors? you didn't have the box checked in odin that repartitions the device?
if all that is ok one last thing to make sure of that its not a problem in your pc. try using another pc, maybe a friends or neighbors. windows pc's are known to pick up bugs and malware undetectable by virus scanners which could have messed with drivers and other processes in the software. one of the reasons I stick to Linux, preferably ubuntu while when needed I run a virtual windows machine!
still with errors...

I use ubuntu... i installed the heimdall 1.4... but the pit file still gives me error... is really weird...
I've tried to use the nvflash, but I don't know if I'm making something wrong or it just doesn't work... the heimdall gives me "usb write failed", and then I have to disconect the cellphone and take the battery out in order to try again...

I don't think heimdall is compatible with our glides! Make a vm with Windows xp and install Odin!
Sent from my SGH-I927 using Tapatalk 2
I have tried to use Linux and my glide was never able to talk to my computer, I use debian and opensuse, so I had to reinstall over opensuse, so it works now with windows 7.
odin 3.07
well.. I've downloaded the 3.07 version of the odin... I saw in a snapshot that it had the box for "ERASE NAND ALL"...
well, I checked that box, the odin started to flash, but it got stuck a few seconds after the start...
Somehow it seems it did something, now I am able to flash any rom, I mean that the odin finishes the flashing process without any error, BUT....
But still stuck in the samsung logo... =(

now that you have odin working, try flashing the official UCLJ3 update that contains the bootloader. I posted a guide for updating that. if not go back to gb and try the official gb update! most of the roms here don't include the bootloader and some don't have the modem or kernels! can you flash CWM recovery and boot it? if so, you might try booting recovery and wipe data, cache and format /system. then try one of the official updates! if none of that works, your best bet would be to hit Dman3285 up with a pm, maybe with a small donation he could get your phone going again! he's one of our best devs here.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

PLEASE tell me you're not running Odin in a VM. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
Strike what I had here before. Now that Odin is working, flash the PIT *first*. Make sure it's an untouched PIT dumped from a working Cap Glide. (If you need one, walk me through it and I'll dump mine.) Then do the UCLG9 oneclick (not UCLJ or UCLH). If it fails, do a battery-pull reset and try again. That *should* get you back to a functional device, and you SHOULD at that point be safe to flash UCLH or CM10/PACman.
And DON'T use Wine or a VM for Odin. It NEEDS a real Windows machine. I almost bricked my Glide trying to use a VM.

No, I have different partitions for Ubuntu and Windows 7... I'm running Odin on Windows 7...
About the PIT. I have two pit files from two members of the forum... Both of them gives me error. Check this picture: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1558361&d=1355347858
That's the error I get.
Please, dump yours and I will try that one... Both pits gives me the same error when I flash any of them...
To dump your pit, you should be on linux, download the heimdal 1.4 RC from here: https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/archive/master.zip. The 1.4 is only available for linux at the moment and It seems that previous versions doesn't supports the Samsung Glide.
Here you have the compilation procedure: https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/tree/master/Linux.
After that, you need to put your phone into download mode, and then run the following command in the terminal:
Code:
heimdall-frontend
This will run the graphic mode of the heimdall. Go to UTILITIES complete the pit's file name and dump it.
Hope you make it.
Shooting in the dark here...
You do have "Re-Partition" checked when you do the PIT, right?
Maybe if they were dumped with heimdall, you should try writing them with heimdall. Who knows, might be some file format shenanigans.
Can you flash the CWMR zip with Odin? It might get you recovery back, if nothing else, and then we could do some more advanced poking or dd'ing via ADB.
yes..

I do have checked "Re-partition" and I get "FAILED" in Odin, and this error in the Glide's screen: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1558361&d=1355347858
When I try to run heimdall to re-partition and flash the recovery at the same time, I do this command:
Code:
heimdall flash --repartition --pit sghi927-orig.pit --SOS SOS.img
Here I get a weird error. It says something like "not such partition named PIT"... It seems like it takes the parameter "--pit" as a partition name. If I try just to re-partition, I get the same error. I don't know if this is a software error or I am the one who is doing something wrong.
I can flash through Odin and heimdall. Both finishes, but I don't know if they do something or not, because nothing changes, I just get the samsung logo, and no recovery.
The same with the CWMR with Odin, It goes through all the process, but nothing.
What do you mean with "poking"?
How can I get connected via ADB?
You can't get into CWMR so it doesn't matter.
Give the UCLG9 oneclick a spin, who knows, it might work.
Though, I'm starting to think that your download mode stuff is itself corrupt. You're probably gonna have to get nvflash working. Did you try that strace thing I mentioned in the other thread?

I think that my download mode could be corrupted too.
I tried to use the nvflash, but everytime I tried to run the ./flash with any option in the terminal, I get "USB Write failed", and then I have to reset the phone taking out the battery. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't have any tutorial or something to know exactly how to use, because in another thread I've read that the nvflash could be locked, and you need to do something extra to bypass that.
What did you tell me in other thread? What do you mean with "strace"?
Any ideas?

The strace is a bit weird, apparently libusb doesn't strace well. But this is the only problem I could see:
Code:
ioctl(5, UI_DEV_DESTROY or USBDEVFS_BULK or USBDEVFS_BULK32, 0xbfbf1bbc) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
Sounds like nvflash can't actually see your phone. Do you get the same error if the phone is not connected?
I might play around with nvflash myself if you can't figure it out.
I was screwing around with nvflash and it doesn't work on my (fully functional) device, and I KNOW my environment is sane. I think Samsung locked it with their own SBK, which odds are we will never figure out.
I've got one last shot in the dark for you though, which is why I'm-a-bumping. But first I need to double-check something
Run this:
Code:
heimdall print-pit
And post the output here.

[Need Guidance] Root updated S4 with Mac.

Hi pals,
This is one of those "I'm too busy to research A, B and C, please feed it to me with a silver spoon?" posts, and for that, I'm sorry.
I'm working a lot lately, but I just bought my S4 and have come to understand that in order to root it with the May 7th update, I must follow different instructions. The problem is, I need to do this on a Mac, and therefore need to use Heimdall to do it. Not only do I not know anything about Heimdall, but I've been out of touch with the rooting/ROMming scene for a while now.
Could someone please sum up a step-by-step for a Mac user trying to root their S4 that's got the May 7th update on a Mac?
Go to an Internet Cafe or something.
Not being a jerk, but i'd rather go to kinko's than do it with a mac

Unfortunately this is a matter of not having time on my hands. I have these random little bits of 10 minutes here and there in my life lately and I can only hope to root this phone during one of them lol
I'm going to Google this video though, really appreciate the heads up.
Edit: After searching, are one of these videos Mac specific and geared towards post-May 7th-update users? They're all kind of looking the same to me and I can't open them all.

Download this Heimdall Suite for MAC here: https://github.com/downloads/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/heimdall-suite-1.3.2-mac.dmg
After it's downloaded install the suite.
The Suites package contains the frontend which uses a Graphical User Interface simular to Odin for windows.
Here is the link for the STOCK Tmobile Heimdall flashable Samsung Galaxy S4 Touchwiz Jellybean 4.2.2 official firmware:
http://k0nane.info/rom/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip
After you download the firmware, unzip and extract the TAR file and then extract all the files which are inside the TAR file
into a new folder on your computers desktop.
Be sure that you have installed the proper samsung usb drivers for your phone before trying to use Heimdall.
Download and Install the Heimdall Suite. (this is a Odin replacement for the MAC)
Using Heimdall
Step 1: Run/Execute “heimdall-frontend”
Step 2: When Heimdall opens there will be different slots to put files into, the filenames correspond to the name of the slots.
Navigate to the new folder on your desktop which has all the files you have extracted out of the .tar file
Example: Under FactoryFS click browse and find the FactoryFS.rfs file that you extracted out of the .tar file into your new folder.
When you’re finish double check that the correct files are in the correct slots.
Make sure that you do not checkmark the repartition device!
Step 3: Check to be sure that all the necessary files are in the right slots and the necessary checkboxes are checked.
When you’re finish reboot your phone into download mode and connect it to the usb port that you installed the drivers to.
Wait for about 5 secs. to let your computer recognize that your phone is plugged in the usb then click START.
Wait for Heimdall to complete finish the flashing.
You should get a “flash completed successfully” after it's done and the phone will now restart.
Good Luck!

Hey thank you so much for laying that out!
One question; How do you extract the TAR.md5? From what I'm reading, you need a Windows PC and a special application and all this crazy stuff to do it. Can I do it with a Mac application?
Edit: Wait, can I just rename the md5 to zip? Duh?
Edit 2: Yes, you can, I did, and I'm all set lol Gonna go for it now, thank you!

Ok, so I think I may be having an issue due to using the latest version of Heimdall. I've checked out the guide on Heimdall here and it's based on version 1.1. I have version 1.3.2 and I don't see anywhere to select certain files. All I seem to be able to do under "Flash" is select a PIT file, which I don't have.
I tried to "Load Package" on the first screen, but it's telling me it's not the right file size.

Sorry, I forgot about the MD5, just remove the md5 from the filename so the extension is simply .zip
then unzip it into a new folder on your desktop...
And NO you do not need a PC.

It's been so long since I used a mac, I know I am forgetting things.
You need to click the BROWSE box in Heimdall Suite's Front-End which opens another window where you can "navigate"
to the TAR file which is located in the zipfile. (you don't need to use pit or any other files besides the TAR for anything).
Just unzip the ZIP file so Heimdall can see the TAR file when you navigate to it with the Heimdall's Front-End.
Good luck!

Ok, haha, I feel so bad because I'm being a pest at this point.
I've got the files, 12 of them, extracted to a folder.
I'm using Heimdall version 1.3.1.
When I open Heimdall-frontend, I'm presented with two options (others are greyed out): Either load a Heimdall Firmware Package under "Load Package" tab, or load a PIT under "Flash"
I see a space for "Partitions (Files)" where I'm assuming I would add the individual files, but again, it's greyed out.
What am I missing here? I checked out the Heimdall guide here and it looks totally different given that it's version 1.1.

Do you see a "Browse" box?
Click the BROWSE box and it will be looking for a TAR file which you navigate to.
Also, don't do anything with PIT files, you don't need it and if done wrong or incomplete your phone will be bricked
exactly the same way as if you were to flash a pit file in Odin.
The PIT file is the partition information file, and once that's on your phone it never needs to be replaced or over-written
unless your phone is bricked.

You're talking about a Browse button under Heimdall Firmware Package? Yes.
Do I just navigate to the TAR.md5 that I extracted from the original zip? Or am I navigating to a TAR file in the folder I made with the 12 files? Because if it's the second one, I don't have any TAR files in there.
Sorry man, I know this is a pain. I really appreciate the help though.

Check this out: https://code.google.com/p/heimdall-one-click/downloads/list
Download and install both of the files, both of them are JAR free standing apps and they work on Mac OR PC since
they are both written in JAVA.
.
I forgot already, but on a PC before these files can be used the latest version of Sun System JAVA has to be installed
or updated..
But I think if I recall correctly, on a mac it's perhaps not needed.

So I've got it all running, however, the one-click asks for a "tar.gz file" and I don't have one. I'm reading that the Heimdall front-end creates a tar.gz file, but since browsing to the .zip I originally downloaded leads to an error, I'm not sure how this is done.

Yes, about an hour ago I recalled a guy here on XDA called Adam Outler and he is
the one who designed and made these two JAR Heimdall applications.
He used to be around here in XDA about a year ago and I just recalled his name
about an hour ago because we were talking about MAC and Heimdall.
He made many other projects for us here in XDA who had MAC computers
and had no access to a PC.

That's amazing. The never ending kindness of the community at its best lol
I'm still trying to figure out how to make a tar.gz file. I'm understanding that front-end makes it, and I've even watched a video guide, but no one specifies what file to use when you click "Browse..." and choose a file to put in as "Heimdall Firmware File"
I've been using the original .zip I downloaded from the rooting guide, but I get that error about the file being the wrong size or something.
So I tried to download the PIT just to see if I can even make parts of this program work. It failed.
When I researched the error "Claiming interface failed" I found this.
It describes some sort of issue with the fact that I've installed Kies.
Is this part of my problem?

Did you rename the TAR file? - if you did try naming it back to the original name.
All firmware TAR files are fully compatible with Heimdall and Odin plus Heimdall One-Click..
Also I know one thing for sure, that when you press the "Browse" button it's looking for a TAR file.
The MD5 just tells the winzip or winrar if the checksum of the file is the same as it's sopposed to be.
Another thing, the Heimdall One-Click JAR file also wants the TAR file, none of these things work
with Zipfiles with the exception of Mobile Odin, but that has a problem now, it's not yet compatible
with any of the Galaxy S4 variants like the M919 , I9500 and all the others.

Here's exactly what I've done so far, and I've re-downloaded everything so I have fresh files and filenames/extensions just to clear any mucking up I did:
I downloaded this file from this thread as I understand this is the stock firmware necessary to use here.
I unzipped the file, and used 7-zip to extract the tar.md5 which also extracted a .dll.
The tar.md5 file is named: M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_M919UVUAMDL_HOME_.tar.md5
I have installed Heimdall version 1.3.1 as the download site claims that version 1.3.2 broke compatability with many devices.
I downloaded the two .jar files you linked to which make up the one-click.
If all of this is correct so far, I'm understanding that I need to now feed a tar.gz file to heimdall one-click, however, I don't have any files that end in .gz. Just the tar.md5, which the one-click does not accept.
The button on the one-click literally says, "Select a Heimdall tar.gz for one-click" - So I'm lost there.
I'm reading that the front-end GUI is what would be used to create a tar.gz, but it seems to require downloading the PIT file from your phone, and this is failing now, possible due to me having installed Kies and now having different kernel extensions that apparently need to be unloaded (no idea how to do that lol).
This is so complicated! Makes me want to go buy a cheap netbook lol

So I've got it all running, however, the one-click asks for a "tar.gz file" and I don't have one. I'm reading that the Heimdall front-end creates a tar.gz file, but since browsing to the .zip I originally downloaded leads to an error, I'm not sure how this is done.

Why not browse to the TAR file, you can also add the .gz to the filename.tar and see if it helps.

I've tried that too, and it just says, "error Could not write to temp folder" and then "Could not write to file"

[Q] Extract Boot.img from Stock ROM

Hi guys, I would like to extract boot.img from a Stock ROM without the need of installing it on my (Galaxy Note 2 T-mobile). All I found on the internet is how to extract it from an installed ROM.
So I would like to:
1. Extract the boot.img
2. Then flash it through ODIN to my custom ROM (Jedi Master 14)
Thanks in advance and please help me :crying:
Why would you do that?
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
I don't know how you going to use boot.img to fix your problem. But the .md5 rom files are just zipped files. unzip and you will find the boot.img file. Are you sure that this will fix your problem?
Are you trying to change your boot image?
Use a tar archive program (7-Zip, Winzip, Winrar, PKZip, this format is pretty universal) to extract what you need from the official Samsung ROM images. (Check out sammobile.com if you haven't already, you will need to register.)
You might get some error message about the end of the archive, that's normal and due to the presence of the MD5 hash at the end of the file, which most programs will be able to work around nonetheless.
Repack the relevant file with a *nix tar binary, or under Cygwin on a Windows machine. (YMMV, but those are the two only ways I've managed to have the files work with Odin.)
Reboot phone to download mode and flash with Odin as usual.
Done.
Thanks a lot. Thats exactly what I am looking for.

Need pit file for at&t s3

Before I talk about my issue let me just say that im a noob compared to you guys. I decided to post here because I thought I would be able to get some helpful information. Please do not hate on me.
So I have been trying for a while to root my phone and it has been hard because the only computer I own is a chromebook. I was finally able to get my hands on my dads work laptop which is running linux (zorin os 7 based off ubuntu 13.04) and I decided to try a method I found called jodin3 which is like odin in the web browser. Everything went fine until I clicked to flash. It said that I needed a pit file and it said it could get it off my device. I clicked to do that and it said it failed. I then proceeded to try and find the pit file by going to google and when I had found a link it said that there was an error as you can see in the screenshot (it was taken on my chromebook but its exactly the same on the other computer). Can someone please give me a good link to download the pit file because im gonna need it to root my phone.
Welcome to the site. You don't want to flash a .pit file unless you really know what you are doing. The pit file will repartition your phone and if you use the wrong file, you are likely to end up with an expensive paperweight i.e. an unbootable phone that is difficult or perhaps impossible to fix.
I am not familiar with the jodin tool you refer to or why it needs a .pit file. In Odin you would normally ensure that repartition is unchecked and you would not need a .pit file to flash. Pit files are not usually needed unless you are recovering from a brick or (expertly) reallocating memory. Or flashing a full factory ROM, which will already incorporate a safe .pit file. The .pit file that you want will likely differ depending on your phone's memory size and you didn't specify things like your memory size, OS version or EFS format.
If I am missing something and you truly need a .pit file, then you should be doing a lot more reading so that you understand what a .pit file is and the risks of using one. There are threads on this forum that explain how to create .pit files although I can't personally vouch for their accuracy.
In your place though, I'd use a safer rooting method e.g
