Need pit file for at&t s3 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Before I talk about my issue let me just say that im a noob compared to you guys. I decided to post here because I thought I would be able to get some helpful information. Please do not hate on me.
So I have been trying for a while to root my phone and it has been hard because the only computer I own is a chromebook. I was finally able to get my hands on my dads work laptop which is running linux (zorin os 7 based off ubuntu 13.04) and I decided to try a method I found called jodin3 which is like odin in the web browser. Everything went fine until I clicked to flash. It said that I needed a pit file and it said it could get it off my device. I clicked to do that and it said it failed. I then proceeded to try and find the pit file by going to google and when I had found a link it said that there was an error as you can see in the screenshot (it was taken on my chromebook but its exactly the same on the other computer). Can someone please give me a good link to download the pit file because im gonna need it to root my phone.

Welcome to the site. You don't want to flash a .pit file unless you really know what you are doing. The pit file will repartition your phone and if you use the wrong file, you are likely to end up with an expensive paperweight i.e. an unbootable phone that is difficult or perhaps impossible to fix.
I am not familiar with the jodin tool you refer to or why it needs a .pit file. In Odin you would normally ensure that repartition is unchecked and you would not need a .pit file to flash. Pit files are not usually needed unless you are recovering from a brick or (expertly) reallocating memory. Or flashing a full factory ROM, which will already incorporate a safe .pit file. The .pit file that you want will likely differ depending on your phone's memory size and you didn't specify things like your memory size, OS version or EFS format.
If I am missing something and you truly need a .pit file, then you should be doing a lot more reading so that you understand what a .pit file is and the risks of using one. There are threads on this forum that explain how to create .pit files although I can't personally vouch for their accuracy.
In your place though, I'd use a safer rooting method e.g

[Need Guidance] Root updated S4 with Mac.

Hi pals,
This is one of those "I'm too busy to research A, B and C, please feed it to me with a silver spoon?" posts, and for that, I'm sorry.
I'm working a lot lately, but I just bought my S4 and have come to understand that in order to root it with the May 7th update, I must follow different instructions. The problem is, I need to do this on a Mac, and therefore need to use Heimdall to do it. Not only do I not know anything about Heimdall, but I've been out of touch with the rooting/ROMming scene for a while now.
Could someone please sum up a step-by-step for a Mac user trying to root their S4 that's got the May 7th update on a Mac?
Go to an Internet Cafe or something.
Not being a jerk, but i'd rather go to kinko's than do it with a mac
That being said check out zedomax's

Unfortunately this is a matter of not having time on my hands. I have these random little bits of 10 minutes here and there in my life lately and I can only hope to root this phone during one of them lol
I'm going to Google this video though, really appreciate the heads up.
Edit: After searching, are one of these videos Mac specific and geared towards post-May 7th-update users? They're all kind of looking the same to me and I can't open them all.

Download this Heimdall Suite for MAC here: https://github.com/downloads/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/heimdall-suite-1.3.2-mac.dmg
After it's downloaded install the suite.
The Suites package contains the frontend which uses a Graphical User Interface simular to Odin for windows.
Here is the link for the STOCK Tmobile Heimdall flashable Samsung Galaxy S4 Touchwiz Jellybean 4.2.2 official firmware:
http://k0nane.info/rom/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip
After you download the firmware, unzip and extract the TAR file and then extract all the files which are inside the TAR file
into a new folder on your computers desktop.
Be sure that you have installed the proper samsung usb drivers for your phone before trying to use Heimdall.
Download and Install the Heimdall Suite. (this is a Odin replacement for the MAC)
Using Heimdall
Step 1: Run/Execute “heimdall-frontend”
Step 2: When Heimdall opens there will be different slots to put files into, the filenames correspond to the name of the slots.
Navigate to the new folder on your desktop which has all the files you have extracted out of the .tar file
Example: Under FactoryFS click browse and find the FactoryFS.rfs file that you extracted out of the .tar file into your new folder.
When you’re finish double check that the correct files are in the correct slots.
Make sure that you do not checkmark the repartition device!
Step 3: Check to be sure that all the necessary files are in the right slots and the necessary checkboxes are checked.
When you’re finish reboot your phone into download mode and connect it to the usb port that you installed the drivers to.
Wait for about 5 secs. to let your computer recognize that your phone is plugged in the usb then click START.
Wait for Heimdall to complete finish the flashing.
You should get a “flash completed successfully” after it's done and the phone will now restart.
Good Luck!

Hey thank you so much for laying that out!
One question; How do you extract the TAR.md5? From what I'm reading, you need a Windows PC and a special application and all this crazy stuff to do it. Can I do it with a Mac application?
Edit: Wait, can I just rename the md5 to zip? Duh?
Edit 2: Yes, you can, I did, and I'm all set lol Gonna go for it now, thank you!

Ok, so I think I may be having an issue due to using the latest version of Heimdall. I've checked out the guide on Heimdall here and it's based on version 1.1. I have version 1.3.2 and I don't see anywhere to select certain files. All I seem to be able to do under "Flash" is select a PIT file, which I don't have.
I tried to "Load Package" on the first screen, but it's telling me it's not the right file size.

Sorry, I forgot about the MD5, just remove the md5 from the filename so the extension is simply .zip
then unzip it into a new folder on your desktop...
And NO you do not need a PC.
Good luck!

It's been so long since I used a mac, I know I am forgetting things.
You need to click the BROWSE box in Heimdall Suite's Front-End which opens another window where you can "navigate"
to the TAR file which is located in the zipfile. (you don't need to use pit or any other files besides the TAR for anything).
Just unzip the ZIP file so Heimdall can see the TAR file when you navigate to it with the Heimdall's Front-End.
Good luck!

Ok, haha, I feel so bad because I'm being a pest at this point.
I've got the files, 12 of them, extracted to a folder.
I'm using Heimdall version 1.3.1.
When I open Heimdall-frontend, I'm presented with two options (others are greyed out): Either load a Heimdall Firmware Package under "Load Package" tab, or load a PIT under "Flash"
I see a space for "Partitions (Files)" where I'm assuming I would add the individual files, but again, it's greyed out.
What am I missing here? I checked out the Heimdall guide here and it looks totally different given that it's version 1.1.

Do you see a "Browse" box?
Click the BROWSE box and it will be looking for a TAR file which you navigate to.
Also, don't do anything with PIT files, you don't need it and if done wrong or incomplete your phone will be bricked
exactly the same way as if you were to flash a pit file in Odin.
The PIT file is the partition information file, and once that's on your phone it never needs to be replaced or over-written
unless your phone is bricked.

You're talking about a Browse button under Heimdall Firmware Package? Yes.
Do I just navigate to the TAR.md5 that I extracted from the original zip? Or am I navigating to a TAR file in the folder I made with the 12 files? Because if it's the second one, I don't have any TAR files in there.
Sorry man, I know this is a pain. I really appreciate the help though.

I think I found something better and easier for you.......
Check this out: https://code.google.com/p/heimdall-one-click/downloads/list
Download and install both of the files, both of them are JAR free standing apps and they work on Mac OR PC since
they are both written in JAVA.
.
I forgot already, but on a PC before these files can be used the latest version of Sun System JAVA has to be installed
or updated..
But I think if I recall correctly, on a mac it's perhaps not needed.

So I've got it all running, however, the one-click asks for a "tar.gz file" and I don't have one. I'm reading that the Heimdall front-end creates a tar.gz file, but since browsing to the .zip I originally downloaded leads to an error, I'm not sure how this is done.

Yes, about an hour ago I recalled a guy here on XDA called Adam Outler and he is
the one who designed and made these two JAR Heimdall applications.
He used to be around here in XDA about a year ago and I just recalled his name
about an hour ago because we were talking about MAC and Heimdall.
He made many other projects for us here in XDA who had MAC computers
and had no access to a PC.

That's amazing. The never ending kindness of the community at its best lol
I'm still trying to figure out how to make a tar.gz file. I'm understanding that front-end makes it, and I've even watched a video guide, but no one specifies what file to use when you click "Browse..." and choose a file to put in as "Heimdall Firmware File"
I've been using the original .zip I downloaded from the rooting guide, but I get that error about the file being the wrong size or something.
So I tried to download the PIT just to see if I can even make parts of this program work. It failed.
When I researched the error "Claiming interface failed" I found this.
It describes some sort of issue with the fact that I've installed Kies.
Is this part of my problem?

Did you rename the TAR file? - if you did try naming it back to the original name.
All firmware TAR files are fully compatible with Heimdall and Odin plus Heimdall One-Click..
Also I know one thing for sure, that when you press the "Browse" button it's looking for a TAR file.
The MD5 just tells the winzip or winrar if the checksum of the file is the same as it's sopposed to be.
Another thing, the Heimdall One-Click JAR file also wants the TAR file, none of these things work
with Zipfiles with the exception of Mobile Odin, but that has a problem now, it's not yet compatible
with any of the Galaxy S4 variants like the M919 , I9500 and all the others.

Here's exactly what I've done so far, and I've re-downloaded everything so I have fresh files and filenames/extensions just to clear any mucking up I did:
I downloaded this file from this thread as I understand this is the stock firmware necessary to use here.
I unzipped the file, and used 7-zip to extract the tar.md5 which also extracted a .dll.
The tar.md5 file is named: M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_M919UVUAMDL_HOME_.tar.md5
I have installed Heimdall version 1.3.1 as the download site claims that version 1.3.2 broke compatability with many devices.
I downloaded the two .jar files you linked to which make up the one-click.
If all of this is correct so far, I'm understanding that I need to now feed a tar.gz file to heimdall one-click, however, I don't have any files that end in .gz. Just the tar.md5, which the one-click does not accept.
The button on the one-click literally says, "Select a Heimdall tar.gz for one-click" - So I'm lost there.
I'm reading that the front-end GUI is what would be used to create a tar.gz, but it seems to require downloading the PIT file from your phone, and this is failing now, possible due to me having installed Kies and now having different kernel extensions that apparently need to be unloaded (no idea how to do that lol).
This is so complicated! Makes me want to go buy a cheap netbook lol

Why not browse to the TAR file, you can also add the .gz to the filename.tar and see if it helps.

PIT file for GT-N5110 ¨[solved]

I need the PIT file from a GT-N5110 PLEASE!! My partitions are messed up , did a little to much of flashing and testing.
Edit: solved
Solved , ha I saved my tablet the second time from a near hardbrick.
I need to stop my flash addiction . But it is so thrilling, Oh the tablet is dead :crying: , Ah it is back a live .....
More info , I tought I messed up partition as I got stuck in bootloop (again) and restoring EFS didn't solve the problem.
I noticed I marked "NAND erase all" in odin by accident and that was the reason why I got myself in this mess.
So never use that thing in Odin.
How I figured out what was wrong , well that was easy , I had stock recovery on my tablet as I installed a official samsung firmware.
So I started up recovery (stock) and it gave me some info , data partition could not be mounted.
I used the stock recovery to do a data/factory reset and it solved the problem.
Next thing I will do is get my PIT file , you need to do that from within linux but that is no problem got both running on my system. Just need to find out on how to extract it, google will help me...
I want to know everything about this tablet , and make sure it is unbrickable if you just got the right files.
So the PIT file is the next I want , that is what you need when you mess up partitions.

Hi civato, you can extract the pit using heimdall on windows as well.
On my device this corresponded exactly to the file I get directly from the device as root with
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=n5110.pit bs=1 skip=17408 count=8192
I have never used the pit, the emergency has not happened yet for me, so I can't.recommend anyone to use this, but someone could compare to verify theirs is the same. Attaching the pit and text description of pit for n5110 ONLY obtained from heimdall:

Oh thanks , will give it a try , best that we start collecting these files as I see a lot of users of samsung devices at one point need it.
I had some strange stuff going one but was able to save the device every time.
This is my PIT file of my GT-N5110 , it is the same as yours but I took it with the latest Heimdall so I think that is why some names are different in the print out text.
If you look at the block sizes you see they are the exact same size as yours. So I'm guessing this is a good backup for the GT-N5110 16GB , now it is up to other users with other devices to do the same.
Had the same problem and followed your instructions, thanks man now my note is back to live. And running your rom and kernel.

Hi, using heimdall with Arch-Linux.
Problem: PIT can't flash on GT-N5100.
Question:
Does it right, that the right using of dd is in this case:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=[B]NAME_OF_THE_PIT[/B].pit bs=1 skip=17408 count=8192
A few years ago i'd crashed a hard disk and with the help of robi (Linux-Club.de) i fixed it. (Look here: linux-club.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=118487
So i know, prinzipally i can get an image from the Tablet with dd.
But I'm not a freak.
And I think, maybe it's better to safe the image first, bevore repairing.
That was the way with the harddisk, so no dates has been lost.
I think, the synthax to get an image from the Tablet is like this:
Code:
dd if=dev/sdx of=/mnt/sdx/sicherung/image_Tablet.img
Right?

Softbrick - Need Full I317M Firmware With PIT

In my attempt to play around with the new JSS15J.I317UCUBMJ4 leak to get Wifi working on the I317M, I dont know which part corrupted my PIT so now I cannot access my internal media. I'm not sure if it is the bootloader, PIT or combination of the files I was using but I need a full I317M firmware to unbrick the device (preferably 4.1.2 / RWC).
This was my first time using Heimdall and despite reading through the ReadMe a few times, there were countless problems along the way including driver issues and file formats.
I hope to get a full firmware for the I317M as all the ones on Sammobile do not contain param, sboot, tz, and pit. The most important file for me at the moment is the pit file as I think that would restore access to the internal media, which would make flashing other things much easier for me. I havent tried sideload in TWRP yet but I doubt any solutions to my immediate problem could be solved in recovery.
Anyone who has a I317M, please download a copy of your pit file with the instructions as provided by Zen Arcade below:
Zen Arcade said:
1 - Install the USB drivers for the i317m (from samsung web site)
2 - Download the latest Heimdall package from here - http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
3 - Extract Heimdall to a folder on your PC and open a command window there
4 - Connect the phone in download mode to your PC. From windows go to the drivers folder and run zadig. Consult the readme or search XDA on instructions on how to configure the heimdall driver. The device you are looking for might be shown as "Gadget Serial" for the i317.
5 - Now go back the the command window you opened and enter the following commands:
5a - heimdall detect [this will tell you whether the interface is working]
5b - heimdall download-pit --output i317m.pit --no-reboot
6 - check your heimdall folder, you should have a file called i317m.pit if everything worked
7 - If this allows you to successfully repartition your phone, upload the resulting pit here for others to use

The 4.1.2 and 4.3 stock firmwares are available from sammobile.com and do contain bootloader and tz (and most everything else except param and tombstones).
I've not seen a param file for the i317m... if someone wants to extract them from stock rooted 4.1.2 and 4.3 and share them I will resize and post them.
To do so run these commands from terminal emulator on phone:
Code:
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 of=/sdcard/param.bin
PM me and let me know what firmware you were running and what specific phone - i.e. i317-rogers or bell or ...

According to: http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-extract-pit-file-from-samsung-galaxy-devices/
Requirement: To be able to use any of the methods described below [to extract the PIT file], you must have root privilege on your Galaxy device. Both the methods have been tested on the Samsung Galaxy S5.

This means that, unless someone gets it directly from Samsung somehow (leak, release, or otherwise), you'll need to wait for root on the 5.1.1 stock ROM.
I don't know a whole lot about the PIT file, and why someone would ever need it (apart from screwing around so much that you overwrite your partition information on the device... which would be hard for the average user to accidentally do).
Have you tried Samsung Smart-Switch? I don't know if it's capable, but it might download the PIT info from the internet before restoring stock firmware on a 100% borked device.
Thank you for the reply; by adb I know does not work without root as I looked over those methods. But there is also Heimdall that should be able to extract the pit while in download mode and has the option to save it,but seems not supporting this device. Also odin performs this tasks " Get PIT for mapping.." ,but does it automatically and there is no option to save from a working device with same details to use on other. I need it for a g925t that is stuck on samsung logo after odin restore and showing in download mode SW rev. check fail. device:2 binari 1 , and I think by flashing with a pit might fix it

will not work to restore to 5.0.2 from what I know and might also damage it,so do not recommend to try that

SM-T900 pit file

I know this is a very stupid question.
Last time I installed a custom rom through Odin.
I also played with the setting and i did a re-partition <-- I know, shoot me if you can
Now i need a PIT file for my MT-T900
Everytime i install the original rom it fails.
Who has the PIT file for me from the SM-T900 ?????
I have totally no experience in pit file restoration because i never was clever enough to do what u did.
Maybe you have something with this files . I looks like one of it is an pit file:
asanfile.com/file?path=samsung%2Fflash%20file%2Fsm%20series%2Fsm-t900%2F
On website:
asanfile.com/file
Choose samsung -----> flash file -------> sm series -----> SM-T900
I give no garantee this is the correct one.

Thanks for the replay and te link.
It has partly worked. I was able to install the original rom but still got the fail error.
It was clearly not the correct pit file.
My device worked but i wa snot happy.
Afther this i was looking futher in to the problem and found a new program that samsung is using for it's devices.
It's called Smart Switch. I used this program to do a emergency recovery of my device and it worked. The program did a new re-partition of my device.
Many thanks.
