[Q] Went from Gingerbread to ICS 4.0.4 -Issues! Help? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Been a long time creeper of these forums, haven't gotten myself stumped until now so I figured I would request some help from the guru's. And yes, before making this thread, I have been searching for about 3 days straight trying everything I possibly can.
Current settings/specs:
Phone: Xperia Arc LT15i
Android Version: 4.0.4
Kernal version: 2.6.32.9-perf
[email protected] #1
Build number: 4.1.B.0.431
Bootloader is not unlocked
CWM not installed
Problem:
I went from an old custom rooted Gingerbread ROM directly to the new ICS 4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.431) using the latest version of Flashtool. Now that I have done that I am finding it impossible to get CWM installed, unlock my bootloader, root, or really do anything I need to get this done.
What I wanna do:
Ultimately my goal was to get this ROM installed MooDeD ICS 90.2 LRS Edition! If I cannot do that I at least would like to find a way to either downgrade to an older FW/Kernel and start "fresh" so I can take the proper steps to get that ROM installed OR at least find a way to root this version so I can get Titanium Backup working and re-install all of my apps.
While I am not a total noob when it comes to this stuff (I've modded several other phones and gotten ICS running on my HP Touchpad) I am thinking I am in over my head here. If you guys need anymore information from me please lemme know!
Thanks a ton everyone.

Hmm, so your main issue is that you can't root your phone.
What you need to do is download the 4.0.3 kernel (.562) which is rootable using DooMLorD's Rooting Toolkit. The 4.0.4 kernel is not rootable.
Either download the entire fw (.562) and flash just the kernel excluding everything else in Flashtool or just download the kernel alone. Root it and once that's done, flash back the 4.0.4 kernel. (You've already got it in the .431 fw. Just make sure you exclude everything other than the kernel). That's about it.
Once you've got root, you can install CWM by installing pvyParts's Xperia CWM Auto-Installer from the market. Titanium Backup should now work since you've got root.
And as long as you've not got a branded device, you can unlock your bootloader at any time via the official Sony route.

Thanks for the reply.
I tried doing what you recommended (flashing just the kernel for .562) and I get the following error:

Is that because I am just using a bad .ftf file, or is it something else? Is there a particular download you would recommend (whether it would be just the kernel or the whole fw). Something I did notice when I'm doing the Firmware Selection in Flashtool under 'branding' it just shows up as a bunch of squares, not sure if that means anything.
Thanks again!

Make sure you tick/check the No Final Verification box.

Even if I am just trying to just downgrade the kernel alone?

So I have been playing with a few options and can't seem to get past this error, does anyone have any suggestions as to what should/shouldn't be checked if I only want to flash the kernel, or do I have to flash the whole FW?

You have a problem with sin header.
I suspect the file was damaged ( maybe in the download) or the bundle creation wasn't done successfully.

I have tried downloading a few different ftf files but they all seem to do it. I'm currently downloading one called LT18_4.1.A.0.562_NCB, was debating trying that one. I assume it doesn't matter that I have a LT15i (based off what I have read). Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks again

Hey everyone,
So some great news, I got it rooted! Wouldn't have been able to do it without all the above help.
In case anyone ever has a similar problem I will explain. What I ended up doing was downloaded a different .ftf file, the exact one was called 'LT18_4.1.A.0.562_NCB.ftf'. I then flashed just the kernel (unchecked wipe data and cache, excluded everything but kernel, and of course checked no final verification)
Once I did that basically all I did was follow the steps in this video.
After I did that and had it rooted (yay!) I did what xtacy mentioned and installed pvyParts's Xperia CWM Auto-Installer from the market to get CWM running, and that's it!
I assume now I am good to go and install MooDeD ICS 90.2?
Once again, thanks you guys!

Hi !
Glad you got it working though i visit this topic for the first time. Wish i could help sooner.
Anyway, i did also the same by flashing an Arc S ftf (LT18i) on the Arc (LT15i).
So far i didn't experience any serious issues except maybe the fact sometimes, my phone requires me to reboot itself. It happens once every 2-3 weeks on average. It's confusing at first but i got used to it.
Actually i also use an LT18i as workphone and i don't have the same reboot message as for the LT15i.
I don't know if the following can help but i would discourage to upgrade to .431 and remain in .562 if you like modding your phone. When I flashed to .431, the Xperia S Power Widget i had modded to .562 didn't work properly and brought some notification bar vanishing symptoms for some 20 seconds or so. This, for me, was unacceptable. Therefore i came back to 4.0.3 in .562 for both devices.
If this can help any reader ...

1. I think you should update fw via se companion or flashtool, your fw is too obsolete to use rom cook.

[repair][arc/arc s]unbrick and restore to stock

If you messed up your ROM by installing wrong kernel, not wiping data, doing stuff in the wrong order etc, and your ROM doesn't start and you don't know how to fix it...
Follow these instructions to return to:
1. Stock Gingerbread
2. Stock ICS
3. Stock ICS + root
1. Choose appropriate FTF file and download:
ONLY LT15i
.62 firmware: http://uploaded.to/file/lpdhtmqi/LT15i_4.0.2.A.0.62_Generic Global World.ftf
.42 firmware: http://uploaded.to/file/vmfu4czg
ONLY LT15a
.62 firmware: http://uploaded.to/file/f58llc72
ONLY LT18i
.62 firmware: http://uploaded.to/file/gsfx4w60
2. Download and install flashtool https://github.com/Androxyde/Flashtool/zipball/master
3. In settings on phone, allow unknown sources, turn on usb debugging. (if you can't start your phone, ignore.)
4. Turn off phone.
5. Connect usb cable to phone, hold back key while plugging the USB to the pc. LED is now GREEN
6. Open flashtool, drag the downloaded FTF file to the flashtool window. Press ok.
7. You may need to reconnect the phone the same way as before.
8. The stock GB is now flashing. Gingerbread 2.3.4 INSTALLED
From here the phone is fixed and you can do whatever you want.
ICS:
9. Connect the phone to the computer and install ics 4.0.3 via pc companion/sony update service.
ROOT:
10. Download rootkit: http://bit.ly/ert_xperia_2011_ics_1
11. Extract files anywhere.
12. Again make sure unknown sources are allowed, turn on usb debugging.
13. Run runme.bat
Phone is now rooted.
I can not guarantee that this will work for you/your device however I am quite confident that if you follow the instructions carefully you will succeed.
Please press THANKS if I helped.

This can be helpful for anyone whose ROM isn't working. It is directed to noobs who accidentally ruins their custom ROM so they can start over. Also the reason why I'm doing this is because I searched the forums and I could not find a guide that was simple for noobs to understand, which would always work no matter what you did wrong. I've used this method so many times and it has saved me countless times. I thought the least I could do was to share.
I hope I answered your questions.
Why why why do People use uploaded.to links, and feel the need to rehost files to it. Just link directly to the flashtool and use mediafire for anything else.

I understand this reply is far too late but for people in the future:
You cannot upgrade to ICS when your bootloader is unlocked. You can easily lock it again using this small FTF file. When the upgrade with PC companion is complete, you can continiue modifying your phone with custom ROMs etc.

It is very hard for me to know what is causing this problem. Some minor modifications to the flashing procedure can potentially fix it. Try doing it like this: Open FlashTool, drag the FTF-file and drop it in the dialog box. Press ok and wait for the instructions to pop up. When they do, connect the USB-cable FIRST to the phone and after that hold back key while plugging it to the computer. If the battery of the phone is too low I think it can cause problems, try to charge your battery (if possible) and try again. Also make sure to flash the appropriate FTF-file, accordning to your model.

Try looking at this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653188
There you can find enough info to help you on 2 levels: -
Level 1: getting the phone up and running again -
Look for a stock rom, and flash it with flashtool.
This should start your phone normally.
Level 2: getting a custom rom on your phone.
If you are sure that your bootloader is unlocked, then you can try flashing a custom rom with a custom kernel.
This is the exciting thing about unlocked bootloader. You can flash anything onto your phone
If you are not sure about anything, then just look at the level 1 thing - "get your phone working normally."
After you know that trick, it is easier to experiment a bit more.
Good luck.

With a bit of reading you could have learned a lot in the 8 hours since I first posted , and you'll find that more People are willing to help when you show a bit of initiative, especially on developer websites where you NEED to READ to learn.

I dont know what is ur problem. but lets make it clear, i have been reading a lot from past 3 days, trying to figure out how to actually perform the flashing, rooting n installing custom roms. However, there are so much issues, discussions and different methods that it becomes really difficult for a newbie. Its so ignorant of you to blame someone without even knowing anything. I m stuck on a problem where i can not find any help from net.

I can summary some step for yout to go :
1 . Unlocking your booloader phone following that instruction : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034087
2 . Searching for ROOM that yout want to flash , it avaiable with .zip file .Download it and DO NOT extract .Move it to your SD card
3 . Download and Flash kernel which is recommend in ROOM installation instruction (Example : Xperia Ultimate HD recommend Advandced Stock Kernel). To flash kernel ,you can refered to instruction of this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838916 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034087
4. After you flash kernel with CWM recoveyr built-in.Turn on your phone . When the logo of kernel is appear .You press the back button 4-5 times to access CWM recovery mode .If it can access CWM you can install ROOM from sd card which you moved to at step 2 by choose first line of CWM command ("choose install zip from sd card" )

Blah Blah Blah! What continues to amaze me is how many People sign up to a Mobile Developing website to then ask to be spoon fed, I also find it extremely lazy that after being given some advice then claim a few hours later that they still haven't learned ANYTHING or claim things like they've been reading for 3 days!

I've not actually "blamed" you for anything have I, and if you are stuck at a step you would have been better replying with what you're stuck with than taking umbrage with someone that was actually trying to help you help yourself.
1-st step: unlock bootloader
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
2-nd: installing ClockWorkMod (CWM). instractions how to use CWM: just google search it. The easiest way is to download "X-parts"(needs root: see 3-rd step) app from google play and it will install CWM automagically.
3-rd: Root access by DooMLord the best one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320350
After doing this steps you can download any custom rom and install it via CWM. I recommend you CM10(jellybean 4.1) by FXP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780316
first step is essential yes. Unlock the boot loader. installing CWM and root is not as all ROMs / Custom kernels have autoroot & CWM.
So copy the ROM.zip to sdcard. flash kernel via flashtool or under command line
Code:
fastboot flash boot (kernelname).img
, then boot into CWM (check the op of the kernel you are using, to find out which hardware key is needed to boot into CWM). wipe data ,cache and dalvik cache from CWM. Then install the zip. Then reboot the device.
Hopefully this stops the needless bickering. Although I understand from both sides. On development sites, reading is your friend.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I've tried stock as well as custom firmwares, all the same issue. I bought this phone from aliexpress(chinese product website) so I put the issues im having down to that, although it's displayed as R800i.
in flashtool, I read somewhere to tick "disable final verification" but I had no luck. I haven't changed anything else in my attempts except for wiping userdata and cache.
I'm at the point now where I'm going to contact the aliexpress supplier, hopefully I can get more insight to this and perhaps find the correct firmware

Try with some older version of Flashtool. Some users reporter similar problem, but i can't recall which older version is working properly. I personally use v0.9.10.1 (it worked for so long, so there was no need for me to update)
as the user above me said, try the "previous version" on the flashtool website..i had the same problem, the latest version didn't work on my xplays, the previous version did. also, are you able to enter flashmode (or fastboot, but if i understand correctly your bl isn't unlocked)?have you tried to flash a ftf with recovery and flash the rom from there?
If you didn't unlocked bootloader, try to use Sony PC Companion to "reflash".

I can affirm , that here with Sony Xperia Play r800i, I could not flash a stock ROM with the latest version of FlashTool, but I could do so with the 0.9.18.4 version (and older).
