I want to increase the range and connectivity issues im having. Im running cyanogenmod nightlies 249 with tiamat 3.3.7. No tweaks at all to the kernel or the O.S. Is there any possible way to do this?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I never had issues with wifi when I had my evo. The signal strength appeared to poor in the status bar but really wasn't. Been ages since that nightly and kernel came out. Try updating to 7.2 and latest tiamat kernel.

Is anyone having a slow data connection today or is it just my phone. I'm running speed test and I'm only getting an average of .50mbs up.
Currently I'm on cm6 rc1 with the snap v3 kernel. Flashed the latest radio but haven't flashed the wimax since I don't get 4g here.
Any idea??

I meant .50mbs down. Sorry.

Sorry guys if this is a bumped thread.. Couldn't find one that helped me at all.
Alright, I would like to know, What is a kernal. Ive flashed almost every rom possible but i havn't done anything with kernals.
Thanks

I've heard it stated as "a bridge between hardware and software." They control your processor speed for certain circumstances (screen off) and what voltage your processor gets at certain speeds. It can also come with different things like audio boost and enhanced multitouch capabilities (3+ finger input). Just remember to flash a sense kernel if you're on a sense or senseless ROM, or an aosp kernel for an aosp ROM. I always wipe dalvik cache and cache partition before installing a kernel, just to make sure theres going to be no problems.

So what your saying is , different kernals do different things twords performance ? And what is cm 7 rc2?

Correct, there are some overclocked kernels and some that are stock speeds, plus all of the different tweaks that can be applied. And CM7 RC2 is a ROM. CyanogenMod (ROM name) 7 (version) RC2 (release candidate). Its a pretty popular ROM.

Lmao no man, im running cm7, love it to death. What is CM7, aosp ? I know its senseless.
So not to jack your thread but its highly related to the question I've been asking today. I understand the description of a kernel above but then what would be the main differences between the kernel and the Rom of a device? Are kernels simply used to modify aspects of the phone such as processor speeds or do they also have something to do with the UI?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I dont think they have any effect on the UI
So besides just processor speed, what else could a different kernel affect?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
CM7 is AOSP.
Kernels don't affect the UI, they control processor speed mainly, but they can also come with patches that boost audio levels and enable fast charging or trickle-charge (SBC [when you charge your phone normally, it gets to 100% then stops charging regardless of being plugged in and runs off of the battery power til about 90% ish resulting in the infamous dropping 10% battery in like 5 minutes scenario. This mod enables the phone to drop its charging current once it hits 100% instead of turning off completely, maintaining the battery at 100%.]). Pretty nifty stuff

So the name of that mod is sbc?

I'm not exactly sure about the BEST, cause different things happen to people when using the same kernel, but I've been using chads incredikernel from 3/18/11. No problems with it so far.

I heard that kernel had smartsss governor ? What's that do .
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Yep, it does. I'm not too familiar with what it does, but I've heard it basically favors lower CPU speeds, saving you some extra battery life. I've yet to notice any lag or slowness from running that governor. I get pretty good battery life with this kernel too, so I figured I'd stick with it.

Would calling a phone a car chassis, a ROM the motor and a kernal the driver be a good analogy?
I just rooted my EVO 4g and I want to know what the best Rom is. I want better battery life, speed and performance...help please.

I'm using the xplod rom put out by team noctournal combined with tiamat 4.0.7 sbc kernel. The rom is fast as hell, especially considering its still in beta but most everything works. Wifi, 4g, cameras.... They are working on the next release which will fix a few small issues. As far as my kernel I am going on 9 hours off the charger with moderate use and I'm at 47% still.

The Tiamat kernel is crashing and lagging out my phone, while the stock kernel runs perfectly but gives crappy battery life (<1 day). What do people use nowadays? Yes I am sure I am using the GB Kernel.
Have your tried out the mason kernel?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546878
seems to be doing well, thanks.
The last 2 day I use Manson G 14 with nosbc and fso!! work perfect!!

I was using the one that didn't mention fso and I got a crash reboot when I was using Google places earlier - same thing that happened with tiamat.

I ended up going back to stock CM7.2 kernel myself, was getting random reboots... Was considering just taking source adding SBC and a governor or two and recompiling my own, lol
Mason is branched from tiamat, so you might inherit problems like I did...
I'm curious if someone out there in dev land can explain why custom ROM (ics/jb) 4g is so poor compared to stock ROM 4g.
For example, the FI03 stock ROM or any GB ROM will consistently get 8-15mb/s...whereas custom ROMs like CM9/10 have speeds of 600kb/s max. (Some claim the FI03 modem fixes this issue but this has proven to be untrue by many users)
I know I'm not alone in this category as many other users are report the same speeds as well. Is it kernel related?

I believe something in the kernel is throttling 4G. I know chris41g is working on it with his kernel, which is why 4G has been borked in his latest experimental CM9 builds.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Dchibro is correct - it is the the kernel - not the rom - not the modem.
Both above correct, but it is more than just the Kernel .. I asked in a FI03 thread about the removal of the cap and was told the changes are in kernel and in several places in the ROM itself too.
Just happened to me after flashing a new kernel in.
Went from getting 8mbps down in the office to 1.1mbps lol. I think I'll be going back to stock.
Does anyone know when it started getting throttled though. I was sure 4g was fine on cm9 up until a couple months ago....
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I just flashed back to stock FI25 kernel from depository and my 4G speeds are back to normal. Was previously on AGAT's.
Theres a vid on youtube that the CM team did and I believe Cyanogen talked about Sprint phones in general saying they was harder to maintain due to there set up with 4g radios.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
yeah I was getting low 3gish speeds on 4g with agat 5.4 kernel with FI03 stock rooted rom. Switched to his FI03 kernel repack and 4g speeds went back up.
I think it's only really been fixed since FI03 came out and 5.4 isn't based on FI03 source?
I get 8.8 MB/s with BluKuban
Anyone know which kernal to use for CM10 or any JB Roms that wouldn't screw up 4g speeds?

But on stock rom you get 16 mbs
Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch w/ Stock 4.0.4
Xperia Play R800X w/ supercharged stock 2.3.3 and doomkernel
I've seen in the Epic4g forums that they've gotten the Nexus S modem and RIL to work with their device. From what I understand, the AOSP Nexus modem works better on custom AOSP roms for the Epic4g than the stock ones. Any idea if this would be feasible on our device, maybe from the GNex?
I don't know, just a blind shot in the dark. Below is a link to a thread discussing patches to make this work, if anybody wants to look a little further into it.

I actually just flashed Blukuban to see what kind of speeds I would get and I am still get 300 to 400 kbps.
The only roms I get good 4g are GB roms. All JB and ICS I get no more than 700kbps.

Has any progress been made or is something those of us who are affected will have to deal with?I just tried MIUI, CM 10, and sbrissens aosp and I'm still at the same speed.

If everything else seems to be working fine, and this is happening on all ROMs, then it is probably either your phone or the battery.
Take the battery out and spin it on the table. If it spins like a top that means it's puffed. A puffed battery is shot get new one. In fact, a puffed battery is potentially dangerous, it means it's internally damaged. It's possible for them to catch fire.
If it's not the battery, it's the phone, get a warranty replacement.
My wife's phone was doing this on multiple ROMs (including stock), and the battery is fine. We have a new phone on the way right now in fact.

How is that even possible? I'm in a high 4g coverage area and the fastest 4g I've gotten was 2.2ish, with blu kuban as well.
