ics overclocked! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

this is just for those who wish to see a bit more snappyness in your ics....
First i have no idea if this will work on all roms, but im using the PHANTOM rom ( 4.0.4 ) and using the tergat paid version.. im using the kernal that came cooked into the rom....
i just loaded the overclock module, and set it to 1.54Ghz.. i did not change the voltages at all..
doing this i saw an increase in about +200 points testing with antutu benchmark...
im advance i apologize for wasting fourm space but just figured since i havent seen anything on overclocking ics yet, id just show how i did it..
just something to tinker with..

of course.... always a thread mixed within the 1000s out there.
one thing i noticed is on the antutu it shows where people have post thier results... how on earth are some of them overclocking to 1.9ghz and 1.75hz.. scoring soooooo high?! for example im at 1.452ghz scoring say 7200-7300 and some are at 1.452 scoring 12000-15000... seems kinda high to me...

Lets just say they are ways to cheat the benchmark test. I never did and not sure exactly how to but I know I have seen people talking about it.

I've never understood why someone would want to fake a already meaningless benchmark number. It screams I'm over compensating

i agree..i was just wanting to overclock. little to sed if it would make some of the ics Roms any snappier.. Alot of Ics is being released on quad core phones and phones with slightly snapier processors.. but i thought taking my 1.2ghz to say 1.4ghZ would polish the speeds of ics on my phone.. well and it does!! just gotta use tegrak..

Keep in mind that most of the newer phones being released in the US are still dual core. I believe the reason for this is for the LTE support. And even single core phones can run ICS without much of a hickup so I wouldnt worry too much about overclocking just to gain some performance in ICS. The devs are working hard to tune it up. Just follow Phantoms thread. And I am sure once we get the official release and/or source drops we will see even greater performance tweaks done to ICS for our phone. Its just a time game....

[Q] overclocking issue

Now me and 4 of my friends have EVOs and I rooted all of them. Some of this EVOs are hardware verson 003 and one of them is 002. 2 are novatec and 3 are epson. We are all running fresh 3.1.0.2 with netarchy-toastmod-4.1.8 bfs, mine has 4.1.9 BETA, but my one friend is running CM6 RC2 because he loves it. Now all of these EVOs can overclock to 1.27 GHz but when we do it they freeze and crash. My one friend can go up to 1.22 just fine but the rest of us are stuck at 1.19. I want to know why this happens. If our phones cant take that much why have it. What's the point we have 5 EVOs here none can handle it. Im I doing something wrong is the a joke WTF!!
All the phones are different. Most can't oc past 1152 without causing reboots, mine included. Other than ridiculous benchmark numbers, I don't think you'll notice a huge difference in performance.

I dont really care about performance I just wanted to know why this happens and dont get me started on benchmark numbers its just and ****ing number who cares as long as the phone is running fast and sable and has good battery life then its fine some people go out of there way to make there benchmark the highest like CM-snap ver.7.0 kernel.

Simple answer, not all chips are made the same. They are made to minimum standards. Your chip is rated to 1 ghz, and thats what the chip company delivered.
Some chips can handle more, but thats just luck.
As far as why do people strive for the high numbers, thats personal preference. Not everyone here cares about 30+ hours of battery life. Some just like the bragging rights.
Unfortunantly, all EVO's are not created equal. You can have the same hardware and version numbers on 2 devices, but one may be able to OC that high, and one may not. This is also why not everyone can run the superbattery kernel from the Baked Snack rom. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

actually, cm snap 7.0 and 7.1 are extremely stable, have great battery life and have excellent benchmarks as well. i dont have a single problem with cm snap kernels and i run at 1228mhz when fully charged.

that's not going out of the way... it's making the phone as fast as possible. why do anything if you aren't gonna push the limit? how are you gonna develop if you don't push the limit?

[Q] 2.5ghz Overclock? YES PLEASE!

I bet everyone has heard of the droid 2 and X being overclocked to crazy speeds right? Well... how come the Incredible hasn't reached those speeds?!?! Im sure some awesome dev could probably achieve this! There are many Inc owners who would like... scratch that... LOVE this speed increase, and im sure they wouldn't mind donating to the truly amazing dev who does this. Now the question is... whose willing to do it?

You could probably achieve this. Except you'd be buying another phone after your incredible spontaneously combusts from this kind of overclocking. Motorola phones use a different line of processors, OMAP from Texas Instruments rather than the Snapdragons.

Because the Droid 2 and X use completely different processors made by completely different companies. We have a Qualcomm Snapdragon they have Texas Instruments OMAP.
No, see. Those speeds are fake. There's no way a mobile processor with today's technology could handle speeds of 2GHz or higher. 1.6Ghz is the highest I've seen on the X/2, and it wasn't very stable. That's why these "overclock apps" for the Droid X/2 only have options for 1.4GHz max.
Fake... plain and simple... you can't even overclock a PC processor 1.5ghz above its stock speed without some serious cooling. You really believe that a phone, with no fan/water/cooling of any kind can do it?
I am not a dev but my first degree was in engineering 20years ago. So when I say that its extremely unlikely that any of the massive OC stories are true I am talking from knowledge of engineering processes. 30-40% OC seems to be in the realm of reality. Beyond that, you enter the land of the bovine excrement.
First of all, as an engineer you simply do not design these chips with that much OC'ing being possible. Up to 40% OC seems possible - I would actually predict that some time in the near future we will be able to run the chips in the inc at 1.3 - stable. Expecting anything more is silly. If it was possible to run them at those speeds, guess what, they would have released them as 1.5 or 2 GHz chips.
Secondly, even if you were to temporarily be able to run them at substantially higher frequencies than what we can see them get to right now, they would be extremely unstable and would run hot very quickly. Thats too big a risk to take. In the best case scenario, you will just have a bricked device - replacing which will cost you $500-600. In the worst case, you will burn your hand and/or your face.
I would recommend that the OP volunteers his money, device(s), body and brains towards finding just how far we can OC an incredible. In the meantime I am happy to sit on the sidelines and implement solutions which are more logical and less quixotic.

IMO, Over clocking is over rated. You end up with reboots, crashes, and an unreliable phone.
I see a lot of people more concerned with quadrant scores than good battery life. Some of them expect both. I for one think the incredible is fast enough already, especially coming from a storm 1.

To be honest i do notice a little bit of a speedup when I had mine overclocked to 1.15. But of course less battery life is a trade off with that. I am running the newest HTC stock kernel, no OC, and am very happy with battery life and speed. The phone would absolutely FLY with an OC of 1.5ghz or higher. But as someone said, if it was made to do that, they would have just put a 1.5ghz chip in there to begin with.

[Q] Over clocking on the g2

Are you guys planning to make kernal that runs from 1.6ghz to 2.0 ghz?
I managed to get 1.7GHz going but due to reasons of sanity/safety I will not personally be releasing a kernel that is capable of that. Another dev can use my source and easily modify it for those speeds.
Well hopefully one of u developer backup a file for us because i want to run faster then 1.4ghz.
I've been able to reach 1.4 GHz but is unstable for me. 1 GHz is fine and I think there's not much gain/benefit from it getting any faster. We'll end up comparing how things boot/run in miliseconds and then complain about it.

I notice the benefit from 1ghz to 1.4ghz for certain apps, especially emulators like psx4droid. There is a big difference in sound and overall smoothness.
Word u should go show off the speed that your phone is at. Dont tell him that your rooted lolz
I wouldnt be surprise that the g2 get that speed. Remember the old g1 got to 825mhz and original droid got up to 1.4 ghz from it 600mhz cortex processor.
It very possible that the g2 will be at least 1.7 to 1.8 ghz.

Is it worth overclocking and undervolting Sprints galaxy s 2?

Running EL29 Odexed Blue Rom with EL26 stock kernal.
Just came from eVo 4G and have no idea if its worth it and if so what setting.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I've not done the undervolting yet but I'm thinking about it just still reading on what I want to do. I did however do the overclocks for a few days and imo only I really saw no need for it from the stock settings so I just went back to normal. The phone is fast enough for me even playing games that extra 1-2-3-400 mhz really didn't show that much of a difference.
Again this is my opinion others see the need for it I just didn't.

Thanks for you're opinion. Let me know how the undervolting goes if you decide to do it.. I wonder if vipermod would work with this device. I had it with my evo and it was pretty easy to use.

I think viper mad some stuff for the phone. I know he has a rom out for the phone already so maybe his tweaks are there you could always check the dev section.
My phone had freezing issues at anything higher than 1.4ghz, but even then the only real difference I saw was quadrant scores. Games ran the same, in fact I think the UI actually was choppier when OC'ed. Never really looked into it much though.
I don't even know why I tried it in the first place, I never said to myself "gee, this could be faster.." I guess coming from an HTC Hero it was a habit.
this phone does NOT need to be over clocked; it is so much faster than your Evo, that you won't believe it!
Undervolting and under clocking can give you extra battery life; do a search on the Dev thread, and you will learn lots about it..

Hey guy's I noticed the one xl just got kernel sources recently and the result? Insane oc! I was just wondering how hard it would be to match the 2.1 frequency on the galaxy s3 lte as they both run Qualcomm s4's.

Ahaha, well the thing is I returned my one xl for a galaxy s3 for performance reasons. I love to get every bit of power I can from my device and I somewhat expected the s4 to hit the 2ghz barrier soon after it was fiddled with. Battery drain is not a deal breaker for me.

Depends the phone is quite new give it like 2 or 4 weeks tops. Right now IMO development is kinda slow.
is overclocking a phone anything like overclocking a PC? I've never Oc'd a phone before but have plenty of experience on PC.

Way more simpler actually.An app shows you your available frequencies choose the one you want and done.Oh and its live OC to.
Overclocking a phone is not easier than overclocking a PC.
Phones have many CPU steps so you have to find the right voltage for each step.
Also you can only change CPU voltage and frequency. (Some kernels allow you to change bus speed which is nice but alot don't support this.)
The only sensor you have is battery temp.
Furthermore, when overclocking a pc, you can just run prime95 for 10 hours and you know your stable. With the phone there is no difinitive stability test so sometimes something might trigger an instability afte you have been "stable" for a while.
Also no third party cooling. (As far as I know)
Im not saying it's really hard, but honestly when you come from PC overclocking you will probobly get frustrated about some things.
All that being said, overclocking a phone is super fun and I hope I didn't scare you away from it in any way.
Am I the only one who isnt interested in overclocking in the least bit? I mean, the damn thing is fast enough already. I can understand overclocking something old like a nexus one, but wow. What do you guys get out of OC? What do you use OC for that requires the higher speeds?

If you have to ask this then don't worry about it. The average PC doesn't need more than 1ghz. We overclock because we can!

I custom built my computer, im sure i can overclock it to who knows what but it being so new i don't even think about it. Maybe in 2 years when it starts showing age.
Most people that overclock their PC will get a new one before they really need the speed anyway. It's just because its is fun. And plus if you know how to overclock, there is really no reason not to. It's not like it's a trade off, its just free performance.

You should try overclocking your PC. You might find that it is very fun.

I said simpler because in my experience I just select the frequency that I want and it causes no stability issues and under volt each step by 25mv.

I wish I could but I have a laptop plus have no experience in OC a pc.
Your right about that. If your not pushing it to it's limits its easy. But then again the same could be said for PCs.
