App encryption is what got my attention. What the ****, really? Apple all over.
chrome is to be jellybean default browser.
i'm getting a nexus 7.
The "Google Now" product sounds great, and it will apparently work as the inverse to the notification bar? It sounds like you swipe from the bottom of the screen up to display it.
The whole part about your device figuring out your commute to work (along with your other typical behaviors) is brilliant. Every morning I check google maps and have to compare alternate routes, manually determining the least travel time based on traffic.
Now, that will not only be automated, but it will provide me suggestions for alternate routes immediately. "Google Now" seems like the best part of JB so far.
Expandable notifications are also welcomed.
I thought the indoor 'streetview' is a nifty idea - especially combined with that 'compass mode'.
The new UI features just astonish me. I love all of the new features of the notification bar and Google Now. I can't wait to have Jelly Bean!!
Project Butter definitely excites me the most so far.

Simply cuz I've read nothing but how jelly bean is gonna be the next HC. Tablet special ya get me?
But either way, I feel that Google may just not even update our Gnex to key lime pie either...
Nexus S and the 4g model barely got away with getting ota ICS. which I didn't believe we'd get either.
Guess I wanna see others opinions and sources if any that jelly bean may or may not be tablet specific.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
It's way to early to speculate, but I can can almost guarantee you that Google will not release another tablet or phone specific OS. The whole point of ICS was to unify the OS across the phones and tablets. Doing something like 3.0/Honeycomb again would be a complete regression back into Developer hell, so Google has no incentive whatsoever to do something like that again. The only reason they made Honeycomb in the first place was just so they could get somewhat competitive in the tablet market because 2.3 or older on a tablet was just horrible.
I can also (almost) guarantee you that the Galaxy Nexus will see at least one major software update. I don't see hardware taking off more than it has the past couple years to the point that the GNex can't keep up for at least the next 18 months or so. But it's way to early to accurately speculate so I wouldn't even worry about it right now anyways.

I'd like to see where you read that? Makes absolutely no sense. All anyone has said is how big of a failure Honeycomb was an how ICS is made for both phones and tablets. Why in the world would they throw all of that away and go back to 2 different OSes for tablets and phones?
I'd say, with 1GB of RAM, dual 1.2Ghz processor and a 4.65" screen; the Galaxy Nexus will be able to keep up with innovations for a while as hardware can't progress much further without a new battery technology being developed to power the dual quad core processor, 1GB GPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB flash memory and 1080p/i screens for example.

Which is kinda how nexus s went from 2.3 to 4.0 ya know? Like they would just skip jelly bean all together and jump right into KLP

Our Nexus will most likely if not definitely get at least 1 software upgrade (the supposed Jelly Bean Update). The reason Nexus S didn't get HC was because HC was a tablet-OS and it would be counter-intuitive to port it to smaller screened and less powerful devices.

There are not many mainstream devices running that hardware and you would like to see that in a phone? Those specs set you back a few thousand dollars in a PC so even if they squished half that in a phone it would be 1st Gen car phone size, probably $50k and you'd have to carry the battery on a dolly or segway.

there is no way google is going to go back to one OS for phones and another for tablets....just doesn't make sense.

A performance increase is a given. Jellybean needs to be an upgraded ICS instead of a completely new OS upgrade. The Froyo to GB upgrade is a great example; Google spent way too much time on ICS just to completely change it...
I really hope they design a centralized location for all notification settings. Any app that has notifications would show up and you could set led color and ringtone etc like a fully integrated light flow

Great changes take big time. In fact the more a software becomes popular the more difficult is to upgrade it. ICS is the best thing happened to Android since it came out.

A dialer that's actually useable so we don't need to keep relying on third party dialers for t9/smart dialing.
Higher resolution contact images so when they call me and their picture shows up, it doesn't look like ass.
They need to do something about the keyboard and on screen navigation buttons. Its too easy to hit home instead of space bar.
On the flip side, I'd also like to see the ability to adjust the space bar thickness - I keep missing it and end up typing a long word that auto correct isn't smart enough to figure out.

I've only owned android smartphones, but I have bought my parents iPhones. After spending time with droid 1, 3, incredible, and galaxy nexus and iPhones I can see the strengths and weaknesses of each.
If jellybean doesn't improve the smoothness of the ui and just general snappiness than I'm done with android. The hardware is strong enough that the hitches and slowness are inexcusable. And this is only one problem, but I agree jellybean should be a large patch to iCS.

Well you better get an iPhone cause that's never going to happen. In order for it to be that smooth they would have to re-write Android completely in native code which they will not do because it will break support for all 450k apps. Android is basically an emulator so the faster your device is the smoother it will be. It really shouldn't be an issue on the Gnex. I think you're being a little picky. The One X and Galaxy S III should abandon most, if not all, choppiness and lag due to CPU/GPU combos that are multiple times faster than the Gnex.
Another thing they can do is give the UI a higher priority. The UI is top priority on iOS and that prevents stutters but pauses other tasks while its loading UI.

I have been using the HTC Sensation for a year now. I'm thinking of getting a new phone to use for at least a year. The Galaxy Nexus seems to have the best price to performance ratio right now. And I love the great support it gets from Google. If you're in my position, would you get the Galaxy Nexus?? Do you see yourself using the Galaxy Nexus for another year? Why?
Definitely, but then again I keep my phones until they die. My gnexus is my second smart phone, moto droid being first. Does what it needs to, it's quick, and lot of mods for it.

I too had the HTC Sensation. I just recently got the Gnex (GSM) and i am planning on keeping for atleast 2yrs. Even if the next Gnex comes out i don't think i will get it.
PS: Never getting any other phone UNLESS it is a nexus.
I never use to be someone that would waste so much money on phones every year but I find myself buying every Nexus that comes out every year.
I would probably keep the Galaxy Nexus for longer if my screen didn't have terrible stock whites (they are yellow) and terrible banding and gradient issues. All of these screen issues pretty much force me to use black colored themes which are nice, but is severely limiting.
For example, with JB and the lack of themes for it, it pains me to look at the stock screen/color settings on my phone. I don't think a phone should require 3rd party intervention to this degree.
Thus, when I buy the Nexus 4, I'm gonna make sure that it's a winner. I am absolutely enjoying my time with the Galaxy Nexus but I will not go through this annoyance again. Therefore, I'm moving onto the next Nexus ASAP.

Oh I definitely tweak the colors using a custom kernel. Wouldn't be able to live without it.
My point is, however, that it reliance on a custom kernel and inverted Gapps shouldn't be necessary for my phone to look normal.
Right now I'm on JB and would love to stick to the stock kernel for performance and battery life but I'm forced onto Franco kernel for the color tweaks. That's the kind of limitations I'm talking about. This shouldn't be so.

Oh...hm are you sure Google would send a refurb rather than a new device? When did you buy it? Usually refurbs are used only if the device is an older model...though that's through carriers, who knows what Google will do.
I just found that Google actually has phone support for Nexus devices. If you head to www.google.com/nexus and follow the support link. They might be able to help you get a new device.
I'm keeping it. Love the phone, unless the next Nexus is a huge step up then I will not bother upgrading... we'll definitely be getting upgraded to whatever the next Nexus ships with so I'll be happy with this for a long time.
Hi, I know we all want the Jelly Bean, but I think with the Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core ICS is good enugh . I have a Galaxy Nexus with 4.1.2 and a Galaxy s3 At&t with ICS. GS3 with Snapdragon S4 dual core very fast and I installed CM10 jelly bean 4.1.2 on the GS3 and its the same speed. So the Jelly Bean was good for Galaxy Nexus, because it mad it faster and smoother the outdated dual core.
So for this phone the ICS is super fast.
The only thing we need is boot loader unlocked and its going to rain with the beautiful ROMs from our hardworking DEV's .

Google now is preferable, and no one is going to seriously want to have a phone that is stuck on 4.0 for 2 years until an upgrade.
Even if it gets Jellybean in December and then another upgrade 6 months from then it's still another 16 months without an upgrade and no updates would be a lot of ticked off users.
I say keep bugging LG for an unlocked bootloader, and keep paying attention to how close the devs are to getting done .

If we add how much more stuff LG's UI has comparing to pure JB.
When I agreed that ICS is "good enough," I mostly meant in the performance arena. I definitely want Google Now and the new JB features, but Project Butter was a big selling point for JB and this Optimus simply doesn't have any lag even with ICS. I'm really liking it.
Now, on to custom development...
I have 3 devices w/jb, and in my opinion it really isn't that big of a deal. Now is kind of neat, but uses a lot of battery (on all my devices anyway), and the interface speed improvements are OK.
To be honest, though, the interface on this OG feels faster and smoother than any of my jb devices.

That's fine but, when "banana split" comes out or "licorice" or some other sweet android version comes out with a feature that you can't get despite wanting, don't pretend you will still be happy with your phone then.
You don't compare the ability to receive updates to what's out, you have to consider the future and unaccounted for variables.

I'm not saying people shouldn't be happy with ICS for now but, I am saying to sit around and say "good enough" is setting yourself up to be in a nasty position when a new version of android rolls out that you can't get. If I had this phone I most certainly wouldn't be in any major rush for Jellybean and I'll be the first to admit it..
The problem is this entire thread reads as though people will be happy with this phone even if it sticks to ICS all the way until it's time for a new phone.. and given that this is a site dedicated to users who want the newest version when possible, that just seems like the wrong impression to give.

When I agreed that ICS is "good enough," I mostly meant in the performance arena. I definitely want Google Now and the new JB features, but Project Butter was a big selling point for JB and this Optimus simply doesn't have any lag even with ICS. I'm really liking it.
Now, on to custom development...

I would probably agree with you that the performance is "good enough." It doesn't need and probably won't benefit from project butter a whole lot. At best it will see severely diminishing returns compared to some of the older hardware out there. However, performance is only one aspect of a newer android version.

My ancient captivate runs far smoother on JB than it ever dreamed of running on ICS.
Project butter isn't really designed to help a quadcore monster move faster it's designed to help hardware on the weaker side get better performance.
With that said, I feel like a lot of people miss the part where if this phone were to stay on ICS it could miss the next "big thing." Just imagine all the people who didn't care about upgrading to 2.3 from 2.2 because it wasn't a "big deal."
Then 4.0 comes out and a lot of apps won't run on the older 2.2 version. No chrome, no Nova launcher, no a bunch of stuff.
I'm not saying that for the time being ICS isn't "good enough." But, I do think it's important to examine what you'll be missing in the future if this thing doesn't get unlocked.
I agree that I want updates for this phone - and preferably from the community, not just the vendor. So I'm glad there are people working the bootloader issue.

Only reason I didn't buy this phone is no JB. So no, ICS not good enough
Is there any way to add Google Now to ICS? Or does that require access we don't yet have?
I agree this is the fastest and smoothest phone to date.

yes, there is. I'm not exactly sure of the details as I just installed JB when it became available for my phone.
just wondering if anyone played netfix or hbogo video on this phone, do you notice any delays at all?
I just tried "Lost" on Netflix. Zero lag and loads instantly in HD over LTE.
Instead of an actual android release we get a jellybean rehash??
Makes the nexus 4 launch seem much weaker imo.
Why didn't they just make it version 4.1.3 if they were hardly going to change anything?
no, not peeved. dont even care about version number.
Seems enough for a .1 release to me.
People cry when they don't have 4.2, and now they cry when they do have it,

Says the person disappointed after listening to rumors of KLP and getting Jellybean instead?
All JB is, is what they envisioned ICS to be.....it could be 4.0.000000000009 ICS and I could care less. Google always puts out a functioning unfinished product and builds on it. I couldn't care less what the number is or what it's called..... They could change it to Goo OS 4. It's an improvement over the previous iteration with some slight tweaks. Bring on key lime pie is all we are going to hear for the next month's.... Were you peeved when GB stuck around for so long and had so many revisions?

It had nothing to do with the rumours, though please continue to assume......
After the launch of the gnex and nexus s, I was just expecting a bit more.
I never bought into the rumours like project roadrunner, multiple nexus theory, etc...
You could always go back to donut OP.

Well I think Jelly Bean was prematurely launched earlier in the year because of Apple's little legal buff when they stopped shipments of Galaxy devices because of "patent infringements" with the search thing.
Google released Jelly Bean months after ICS. So lets all be thankful that we've gotten JB MONTHS early.
Honestly I'm relieved about the N4 and 4.2. It makes me feel like my Galaxy Nexus isn't "old" news... when in fact it's nothing of the sort. Nothing really tickles my fancy and there are really no new features (hardware/software) that make me want to have it NOW. The N4 seems like a lackluster release.
LOL i laughed hard reading those comments.
My galaxy ace is still running 2.3.6 (we have working cm10 but thats not the point), and its not bad, but i would love t have a stock jellybean or even ICS.
And you guys are bragging about "just a minor" update? It gives you a bunch of improvements: (taken from wiki)
Seriously it's the best mobile os, and you still want MOAR? just flash a custom ROM and stfu
Photo Sphere panorama photos
Keyboard with gesture typing
Lockscreen improvements, including widget support and the ability to swipe directly to camera
Notification power controls
"Daydream" screensaver, showing information when idle or docked
Multiple user accounts (tablets only)
Support for wireless display (Miracast)
Accessibility improvements: triple-tap to magnify the entire screen, pan and zoom with two fingers. Speech output and Gesture Mode navigation for blind users
New clock app with built-in world clock, stop watch and timer
All devices now use the same interface layout, adapted from phones on 4.1 for smaller tablets (with centered software buttons, the system bar at the top of the screen, and a similar home screen), regardless of screen size
Increased number of extended notifications and Actionable Notifications for more apps, allowing the response to certain notifications within the notification bar and without launching the app directly

Always-on VPN

That's a good way of looking at it actually!
Be happy you got the update. And you didn't have to shell out some bucks.

4.2 is not enough reason for me to buy the nexus 4 but I'm happy with it on my galaxy nexus.
Next year with 5.0 I expect big changes...and I will buy the nexus 5 or whatever it will be called then
