Need more info!
Why are you restoring?
Are you restoring same rom thats on it now?
What are you using to restore the rom?
any other info you think might be helpful!!
Sounds like it is unable to mount the data partition, if your using cwm try mounting data partition before trying restore. The partition has to be at least the same size as the original rom you made the backup from, Were you using any a2sd scripts?
etc..

I'm very sorry for not giving you full information, I'm a beginner.
1. Why are you restoring?
I installed cm9 fxp126 and - LT18i_4.1.B.0.431_(1254-2184).ftf, but this has some errors. So I troed to install Complete Xperia S Transformation - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727506, but this could not boot, and reboot continuously.
2. I mounted data at cwm.
3. About "a2sd scripts", I don't understand what it is.

First install a fresh ftf.. Tats the base.. Then install your custom rom.. Then restart.. Then again go in recovery and flash xperia s apps. Read comments in the xperia s apps thread and make sure the zip is error free

Don't know about the layout for that rom but its always good to format any partitions before attempting a restore. Its a possibility that you have changed the layout in your nand. Try to install the new rom again. Let us know
To restore you're backup you will have to reset the same partition layout on your nand to the way it was before.

I installed these files.
1. LT18i_4.1.B.0.431_BB72.ftf
2. fastboot.exe flash boot boot.img
3. cm-9.0.0-RC1-anzu.zip - fixed for camcord
4. gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
But still showing Android man's animation.
Please letme know how to boot my phone.
Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you are flashing the correct boot.img for the rom?
The kernel is not loading if it is stuck on the android logo!!

can you help me about building a cwm recovery for i569?
Sent from my GT-S5660
Well for sure you need Linux. You also need a lot of space on your Drive.
Is it for Stock or Custom Rom (Like CM7)
Try checking this out: Build a custom kernel and [HOWTO] Build custom kernel, libraries and applications on your own
Make sure you're using the right/recommended toolchain but if you pulled directly from the AOSP repo then i guess that's not your problem.
thank you for cwm recovery for 5660m but when I try to clear dalvik cache it reset back to home screen

This customization is much appreciated however I still have two bugs:
1- I can’t mount the sd-ext (I’m using ext2 partition for link2sd); everything else were mounted correctly (cache, system, data and SD )
2- In the last step of backup I had an error when trying to generate the md5 sum (error while generating md5 sum!)
Any thoughts?
Thanks

1- Weird.. Try checking the original post and ask for help there or search your problem there
2- Did you try backing up just once or multiple times? Try backing up more than once. I had same problem even without my mods. But i tried what I said above and it works. If it still doesn't work ask in the original thread also and/or search on google

Peteragent5,
I just tested Nandroid backup with your CWM and ArpegGioMod 0.8 and I also get "error while generating md5 sum!". I tried it multiple times.
You mentioned that it works on your phone, but were you testing it with an EXT4 base system or RFS?
Nandroid backup with your CWM on a Ext4 system worked fine for me, but not RFS.

ERROR: Format /data

Hi guys i have a samsung galaxy GIO ... i have a problem.
When i try to do format /data or davlik cache , i have this problem:
http://imagebin.org/207052
How to solve? Thank u
Is it rfs+ext4 variant of CWM? I remember switching to extonly after such issues. There's also a flashable ZIP around that formats everything - gio-all2ext4.
You can try.
Hi, i have flashed that .zip but the situation is the same... help please!!!
Maybe you could try v. 5.0.2.6. Everything works fine for me. Further ive no idea what to do :s

its in the cm7.1(!) thread, there you can still download px-cwm-v2.zip, it is v5.0.2.6
here it is:
http://www.mediafire.com/?p7r2bcn9447bpc8
however this version may give problems too, as this is the changelog from cwm v2:
Code:
New CWM v2
special thx to ZimniY
fix error mount command
remove rfs support
but also :
Code:
Based on particle's CWM Recovery, only add ext4 support for system, data & cache
\
but this one is working for me fine too, only sometimes after going from ext4 to rfs it gives problems, then flash 5.0.2.7 with ext4+rfs support..

Hi when i try "wipe data" or "format /data" i recive this error:
Wiping data...
Formatting / data...
Error mounting /data!
Skipping format...
I have tryed restore, i recive
E: format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/stl13
I can replace the file stl13 with that of a nexus S with ADB?
why? i have a CWM 5.0.2.7
Stock recovery and stock ROM are installed when you flash with Odin.
Files and folders in /dev are symbolic - they are created with Linux kernel's and services' startup. They cannot be copied and transferred.
Are you trying to restore ext4-based ROM within rfs+ext CWM? My experience says it's better to install ext-only CWM if you're going back to ext-based ROM.
Hi! i have CWM ext + rfs but i tryed flash ROM with Odin but don't work!
When i finish the flash ROM stock, i have connected my phone using ADB.
I have run:
"adb shell"
"cd system"
"ls -la"
but it's empty...
/data is empty ...
Why?
After you flash stock with Odin, "update" get's installed (the screen with opened paper box) and then it's stuck at bootlogo, you have to turn it off (quickest way: pull the battery off the phone) and turn it on in recovery mode (home + power button) and clean both data and cache to be sure. Then after reboot, stock will run.
If you want to switch back to ext-based ROM, install ext-only CWM (it will complain at startup about not being able to mount /cache), format all partitions (besides /sdcard and /sd-ext if you used it), mount /system and restore from backup.
It has to work.
Download CWM from phiexz - ext-only flashable from Odin.
I can't wipe data. I recive error:
E: format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/stl13
i have flash recovery ext only but i haven't solved
What have you exactly done that you messed it up so hard?
Tell me each thing you did. From the first, when you were still running stock.
I have flashed AOKP for Gio... it's OK... but after 30 minutes i have flashed a kernel...
i have run: wipe davlik and wipe cache partition...reboot and the phone goes in loop in the initial screen
I don't remember name of kernel... "delano-aokp-kernel"
Partition / data I think it is damaged
...
Quite strange to me what happenned. There are metods to repartition internal storage using GNU parted. I haven't ever tried it. I can't help you here. I only suspect something has tampered in partition table.

Flash Failed :'(

Hey guys,
I have a problem... :'(
I tried flashing (with cwmv5.0.2.6) either JellyBread and marcin's cm7.2 and both failed.
I did everything, I backupped all, i factoryresetted, i cleaned cache and dalvik cache.
I flashed it, it says it's succesful... Then i fixed the permissions.
But when i try to boot it up it is stuck at the JellyBread splashscreen of with cm7.2 the samsung one.
And it does NOTHING ! Well, the first time i tried to flash JellyBread it did create android.secure,
Lost&found and somthing else but that was it.
I can still boot in recovery so it's not hard-bricked or anything...
I tried restoring my nandroid backups: "Can't mount /system!". *OHNOES*
Did I just brick my device?????
I'm so desperate, i need my phone every day... OMG Hope it's not bricked!!!!!!!!
Please help... :'(
DevWithCookies
You need to first wipe everything and then format your file system to ext4. Our gio has rfs file system. Custom Roms require ext4.
First Flash This Recovery
Then Flash This ext-4 formatter
Then flash any ROM
Reply if it worked
no your phone is not bricked
so first wipe /system /data /cache and /sd-ext (but NOT /sdcard) then flash the rom and DON'T set the permission. Reboot your phone and everything should work
btw: you can't restore the backup of a stock-rom because of different file systems...

[Q] Ext partition error. Unable to wipe data, install zips and restore backups

Okay, this error have been annoying me the whole day. I have a Xperia SL rooted with .55. Everything was working completely great. Today I just tryied to restore a backup with CWM recovery, and I got this error.
Code:
E: format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p12
I can't wipe data and I can't install any MOD or ROM properly because of that.
The most strange thing is that I don't even have a ext sd slot. I don't know why I'm getting this error.
I've been searching for fixes and all I got was completely random fixes from people that mostly doesn't even know how did they fix it. Even though, those doesn't work for me.
* I figured out that when I go on FORMAT /DATA, after that, I can wipe data, and I can (re)install the room again without any error. The problem is after I reboot the system, the error comes back, and I need to format /data if I want to install anything again without errors.
Try flash .ftf with flashtool. Wipe all.

why you wanna try to format in PC? if u format (regularly) in PC , it will only format your sdcard (mnt\sdcard). the mmcblk0p12 is the \system partition. u need to somehow format it first, via fastboot, or try via cwm to format \system.
and give more explanation bout the condition of your phone.. ie: rom, kernel, locked/unlocked bootloader.
i too, once, messed up my \data partition (which it's mmcblk0p14). i fixed that by using fastboot

Like i said, it's a. 55 rooted with stock Rom. Boot loader unlock alowed: yes. I tryed every kind of fix in cwm already and nothing works.
Something I never tryed is via fastboot. How do I proceed with that?
Sorry, my android life just started yesterday, I don't have much knowledge
EDIT: Ok I solved. Actually it's not like a fix, it's just like putting a silver tape to handle the problem. For some reason I'm able to advance restore system backup via CWM recovery. Every time that I do that, my CWM recovery is fully functional again, i can install mod, rom, etc. But, when I reboot into system again, the problem comes back, but I can still use my android without any problems, I just can't install anything via CWM recovery. So basically, now, every time that I want to install something in recovery, first I need to advanced restore system, and than install the rom, mod or whatever. Than I backup again in case I want to install anything else in the future, to repeat the same procedure with the last backup.
I was just having some problems when I was trying to restore the system with a md5 missing error... something like that. I solved this problem by just creating a file.txt in the backup folder and than renamed it to nandroid.md5. Magically it was fixed.

4)You can also use "aroma file manager" instead of Twrp file manager for copying "parted" to "/sbin" and changing it's permissions to 755.
5)In Twrp flash "Redmi 1s partition script_system space 1.2GB.zip/2GB.zip" and wait for the script to finish execution(recovery will reboot automatically once this process finishes).
6)In Twrp--->Wipe--->Advanced wipe--->Mark in "Dalvik/ART Cache"__"Cache"__"System"__"Data"__"Internal Storage"--->Swipe to wipe.
7)Reboot recovery.
8)Install your ROM(don't flash gapps now).
9)Back again to Twrp start screen select "Wipe"-->Advanced wipe-->select/mark "System"-->press "Repair or change file system(notice that size hasn't increased to 1.2GB/2GB)-->Resize file system.
10)Back(though size of partition appears unchanged, its actually increased to 1.2GB)-->Back>select/mark"System"-->Repair or change file system-->Notice size of partition increased.
10)Back to Twrp start screen and flash gapps, that's it.
Reset to default partition:
1)I am also giving link for flashabe script file "Reset to default partition.zip" for restoring default partition sizes.
2)Boot in to Twrp--->Advanced--->File manager--->Browse to the location of file "parted"--->Select "parted"--->Copy File--->/sbin.
3)Now using Twrp File manager browse /sbin--->parted--->select parted--->chmod 755.
4)You can also use "aroma file manager" instead of Twrp file manage for copying "parted" to "/sbin" and changing it's permissions to 755.
5)In Twrp flash "Reset to default partition.zip" and wait for the script to finish execution(recovery will reboot automatically once this process finishes).
6)In Twrp--->Wipe--->Advanced wipe--->Mark in "Dalvik/ART Cache"__"Cache"__"System"__"Data"__"Internal Storage"--->Swipe to wipe.
7)Reboot recovery.
8)that's it you are back to default partition.
PS:
1.Need for "Resizing System partition"(step 9) comes only with CM14.1(haven't tried other CM versions or other custom roms) no need to do that if you are flasing MIUI ROMs(i,e you can skip step 9 if you are flashing MIUI ROMs)
2.If you still need more System space or want to further modify partition table(only if you know what you are doing),you can edit "update-binary" file inside the zip as per your needs.

good work mate
Great tutorial! Have a some questions:
1. After successfully doing this, If I decided to full clean wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache, internal storage, and format data, the size will be reset? Do I need to do all the steps again?
2. If I decided to go back in default partition size I just flash that to reset all the steps? Or there will be a steps to reset all I've done?
Thank you.

1.You can do all the wiping as usual, size of partition wil stay as it is and won't get reset, but if you're flashing current version of cm14.1 again you need to resize "System" partition before flashing gapps.
2.You additionally need to change "System" partition too to F2FS and than to EXT4(like you do with "Data" partition),in case you're going back to default partition.
I forgot to mention point 2 in OP,I will now add this there

Based upon the scenario, the only concern is the system partition coz newer or update partition is too large. Cache partition is ok because it only use as a temp file partition. The userdata partition is large as internal storage because it shared as the same partition. That is the good thing at xiaomi phones, data partition is large as long as you have space in internal storage.

Guys please help me:
Today morning I reparationed my Redmi 1s as the Op said. it went successful. after using for 5hours I've found an update from CM. So I updated using CM UPDATER APP. after reboot I've lost my Google play store and Google app (after updating to todays CM update using CM UPDATER APP). When I went to see the system partition size, it's size went back to the default 782mb (around 782mb, I don't remember exact size).
I checked whether it is disabled or what in apps. But I can't find there also. I tried Show system apps and reset app preferences, but nothing showed them.
I tried to get them back (play store and Google app) by resizing the partition to 1.2 gb (wipe>advanced wipe> Mark system>change or resize partition>back> checked system partition size whether 1.2gb or not>wipe cache and dalvik cache> reboot to system). But nothing worked.
So please help me in getting them back. Please exclude solution such as factory reset or flash gaggs again.
Is anybody else also facing the same issue or it's just me?:crying::crying::crying:

please give detailed instructions to get back to default partition as i am not anymore able to flash any rom on my device. Sometimes it strucks at patching system image unconditionally and sometimes shows error 7 in twrp. And not even being able flash using adb sideload. Please give detailed instructions to revert back to default partition

1)Detailed instructions for returning back to default partitions are given in op under the sub header "PPS", nothing more to add to it,just follow as it is.
2)I myself havent faced any issues till now iam currently on cm14.1 6-12-2016 version
3)Saw your posts on cm41.1 thread too,so you're on latest twrp
but still facing error 7,If possible post a screenshot of error 7(coz it never happed for me)
4)coming to the issue at hand, could you able to mount cache, system and data partitions. In twrp go to wipe>>advanced wipe>>select "cache">>Repair/change filesystem and see if everything(regarding partition size)is ok there.
Then do same for system and data too and check how are those partitions,if possible post screenshots.
Post your relpy as soon as possible.
